The first lines means a lot to people from Oklahoma. "Hear the clicking of the dominoes, you're shakin' up a game." The game is a game called Moon, which is similar to Spades played with dominoes instead of cards. He mentions shooting the moon (trying to take all 7 sets in the hand or round, for the win) and winding up set (missed the moon, i.e. you didn't take all the sets and are now in the hole) in another song's lyrics. "Shaking" is the shuffling process when the dominoes are face down on the table. Just as the dealer shuffles and the deal is rotated around the table, when it's "your shake," you mix up all the dominoes. "the clicking of the dominoes" as they hit each other during the shake is something very tangible in my mind. It reminds me of sitting around the table at my aunts house in Chickasha, OK, watching my aunts, uncles and grandparents play. Everyone on my Mom's side of the family is now gone, my mother included, except for cousins. Those are some of my most cherished memories of childhood, and just one of the many reasons I love this band of my Oklahoma brothers. I'm gonna go finish crying now ; )

I love this song so much. I didn’t discover Turnpike until May of 2019, and their music came into my life just when I really needed to hear it. My step daughter was murdered on April 28, 2019. To add insult to injury, my best dog died 8 days later. The first time I heard Pay No Rent, I must have replayed it 20 times in a row. I felt like Evan had known Micalla, and wrote the song for her. I felt like he was talking about my late Charlie dog with the line howling at the moon. It’s so incredibly beautiful, and helped bring me comfort during the darkest time of my life. And, it continues to do so today. I’m so happy that the band is back!!!!

I discovered Turnpike by accident about two years ago. I was cleaning up my house and was wearing headphones with spotify on and I was listening to a Robert Earl Keen mix (you should react to some of his stuff), when out of nowhere "7 & 7" came on. I ended up listening to that song 4 or 5 times in a row, and that sent me down the rabbit hole. Like you I'm not an OG, but I agree that some of their songs are among the best I've ever heard. I played "birdhunters" for my dad recently and now he's going down that same rabbit hole. Next song to review: The Funeral. Favorite part of this song: without a doubt, "Don't cost you nothin,' not a single cent (the drums there get me)." Love the vids! Keep up the good work.

I was lucky enough to see their first concert back last Friday in Tulsa. They were amazing. My favorite story telling song is the funeral. Give it a try if you haven’t done so already!

Love the reviews! Thought I’d share my knowledge of the background of this song. Can’t remember it 100% but I’ll share the rough idea of it. This song was written for Even’s aunt or 4th cousin (story seems to very a bit) but she passed away from cancer and was the owner of the owner of Lou’s rocky road tavern in Okemah, Ok. Where Even said something along the lines that she was a good drinking buddy that could be available to drink on a Tuesday at noon (odd schedule cause of touring) anyways she requested to a bunch of people she wanted Blue eyes crying in the rain and after Even found out she had requested it from multiple people he took to writing this between her death and funeral. May be butchered a bit but always found it to be a cool background story for the song. Long live turnpike!

Such a great band and song! "The Birdhunters" is maybe my favorite, but it's so hard to choose one. I hope they're able to thrive as they move forward - individually and as a band. They do special things when they're really hitting.

I, too, am a big fan of bands with huuuge sounds but still posses amazing lyrics and storytelling ability. Turnpike and Whiskey Myers are some I’ve seen you react to but another I would suggest is Shane Smith and the Saints! Tracks like All I See Is You, Cocaine Habit, Heaven Knows, Lord Bury Me In Texas, Born & Raised All perfection 👌🏼

I’d love to see you react to another Okie: Mr. John Fullbright, and his song “Satan and Saint Paul.” He actually has a voice with a lot of the same qualities as Felker. Also, loved this reaction, this song and this band.

Can't afford those Red Rocks tickets for sure. It'll calm down in the next few months. But they're reaching "Flatlanders" status of more of a legend than band. And I've seen all three Flatlanders multiple times just never all three at the same time.
