I have to slightly disagree with you about having to teach your children how to talk and respond or act around cops. The police according to “FBI stats” shoot and murder more whit people than other ethnicities. The police are drunk on their own authority and power and love to escalate every encounter when someone tries to stand on their unalienable rights!

I'm a fairly new subacriber and 68 year old white Grandma. This song left me in chills. I'm so thankful I had a Daddy that didn't teach me to hate based on the color of skin or circumstances. He was born in 1912 and his Daddy before him in 1884 but I never heard a bad word from them toward others. But I realize I have white privilege. I have never been scared to death when a cop car pulled me over except that one time outside Memphis but at no other time have I felt fear when I saw lights in my rearview mirror. I have black friends and cousins going back to when slave owners took advantage of the people they owned. Just saying that leaves a raw taste in my mouth but that is the history of the South and it's people. Thank you for speaking up! When I had my DNA done a few years ago and found that while I'm mostly European, thank God I have some African and Native American mixed in, it gave me a new perspective of Southern roots. Thank you for giving me a new artist who has become the world of ths generation like Bob Dylan was for mine.

This man said, "I'm a white boy from the white side of the tracks in Brookhaven, MS..." Now, I'm in my mid-40s. Burt, you look about the same, maybe late 30s/early 40s. Point is we're talking about segregated towns, different worlds really... in the 80s and 90s! And it persists today sadly. To me Tyler is simply trying to say, be empathetic. Put the shoe on the other foot for just a minute. And I can't understand how honest decent people can't grasp that. Fun fact: I grew up in the northeast but actually ended up staying in Brookhaven, after a few twists and turns during a week in New Orleans in my 20s. Thanks for the video, Burt. Appreciate the perspective. Good luck with the channel.

I think there is a double meaning in the lyric of “How many boys could they haul off this mountain? / Shoot full of holes, cuffed and laying in the streets / Till we come into town in a stark raving anger / Looking for answers and armed to the teeth.” Not only did I interpret it as flipping the narrative, but also as the possibility of our differences escalating the violence to war. That line “How many boys could they haul off this mountain?” made me think of that.
@patrickhughes9304

It’s primarily a direct call back to the Battle Of Blair Mountain when folks in coal country from Kentucky and West Virginia did exactly this. The cops and the strike breakers murdered a few working class folks in cold blood and the people decided that if the law wasn’t on their side then they’d have to be on each other’s side and 10,000 coal miners went to war with West Virginia state troopers, local police, professional strike breakers, and fascist goons because they’d had enough. He’s talking directly to his audience of white folks in coal country and saying “we wouldn’t tolerate this, we DIDNT tolerate this. So why do you expect others to lie down and roll over?”

Rene... I'm mixed. Dad's parents from Mexico. Mom whiter than snow. I'm very white looking with a very white sounding name yet I look like my daddy did except white. I speak fluent Spanglish and good enough Spanish. I grew up in very rural Texas and saw my dad get treated like "the help" way too many times.. My brother, Ricardo, is darker than me and gets treated darker, in all that it implies.

As someone who only just stumbled upon here because of this video, thank you. Its important to get these messages out there. I may be the odd one out here, but I feel in my soul what Tyler had said during his accompanying messaged to this song: "I venture to say if we were met with this type of daily attack on our own people we'd take action in a way that hasnt been seen since the Battle of Blair Mountain." He says a lot more than I think he wanted to say, or perhaps even knows. Blair Mountain was far more than just white folks. It was multiracial, native born and immigrant. We all looked at each other and said to hell with the company, to hell with the sheriff, to hell with the feds. Worker power or no power. Thats a message, I think, that needs to come back after so many long years of losing each other.

@brandigoss235

I'm just finding Tyler Childers and his music and as another white person from the South with a lot of family members who ride the right end of the political spectrum and carry a lot of ignorance and sometimes hate in their hearts for people who don't look/talk/live like they do, I think it is SO important that there be more folks from the South and other traditionally conservative regions who are speaking out about these issues. 1) because I think changes in thinking are more likely to come about for some of these folks if they see more people from backgrounds like theirs stepping up and being vocal about these issues, but also 2) because I think we really need to step up and stop allowing the burden of this fight to rest solely on the shoulders of black and brown folks. We should be raising up their voices and holding space for them, especially in spaces like the South and Appalachia where speaking out could literally be deadly for them. Thank you for contributing to this collective voice and showing that it is possible to honor southern heritage while also recognizing the "long violent history" that non-white residents have faced and continue to face in this country. Happily subscribing!

What Tyler has talked about in relation to the final verse is that he’s calling out hypocrisy. In the early 1900’s 10,000 coal miners from Kentucky and West Virginia took up arms against the police and the state after repeated murders by strike breakers and law enforcement. He’s asking his audience, largely white folks from coal country “we wouldn’t accept this, we DIDNT accept this, so why are you expecting others to lie down and roll over?”

It is interesting to hear him say that there are several conversations he will not have to have with his white son. I do not have kids, but I absolutely do remember my father having those conversations with me. From the time I was old enough I was absolutely taught how to act around cops, and crazy people of any color. Dont get me wrong, Tyler Childers is amazing, and no one should ditch him over this message. We should all have empathy for people of all skin colors, and if you dislike BLM, it should be because they are charlatons who are profiting from public support and buying million dollar mansions, but we should all believe that human lives matter and have empathy and actual support for them with physical actions and not just prayers. That said, sometimes I think we jump on bandwagons merely because it feels right.

My sentiments exactly Drew. Tyler's music overwhelms me at times. I have deep roots in Appalachia. I spent a good portion of my life in Knott and Floyd county. Currently in Indiana. Yes the people of Appalachia have a great deal in common with black folks. Both are and have been left forgotten and trampled upon, yet there's that one major difference, I don't have to fear the police or what some ignorant white person may assume. The worst assumption is that I'm a uneducated dirt poor barefoot hillbilly. I'm not pleased with that stereotype yet it is reality.

@@lillylightfoot2470 exactly. I'm mixed Latino and white but look completely white therefore enjoy the privilege. Yet me relatives, including my much darker brother, get looked at with suspicion and distrust. And I'm never afraid to get pulled over by the police. My dad (RIP) got pulled over twice by Border Patrol twice on the same trip and they asked to look inside his truck. He was 70 at the time with my mom who is even whiter than me traveling with him.

Well, I can't disagree for you, considering I known nothing of your life or community. Any areas I've been, if I would've reached for something at the wrong time....I'm certain I would've been shot. The same way the white kid who did nothing wrong, had no reason for the cops to talk to him. They approached him from behind and he happened to be wearing earpods listening to music. He didn't comply because he didn't know they were there. Apparently he happened to pull his shirt up a little near his waste band. The officers shot him dead. The video of the white man crawling down the hotel hallway trying his best to obey confusing and intense commands, while crying and begging for the officer not to shoot him...suddenly the officer opens fire with a rifle and kills the man. There are many, many more. Just saying...I agree with Tyler, but I believe everyone should be nervous to spme extent.

I’m a left leaner precisely because I think it’s more patriotic to be one. Inequality of rights and inequality of safety are not good for this country. Wild inequality of wealth (I’m not advocating communism here - I advocate coming as close as we can to equality of opportunity, not equality of result) is neither good for the social fabric of America nor even good for business. What I mean by Wild Inequality of Wealth is the poorest 40% of America’s population collectively owning less than one third of one percent of America’s wealth. The way to get our country to work is to nurture its middle class - because that’s where the bulk of the customers are - and to accept collective responsibility for the health and welfare of our country. We won WWII by collective action, not phony rugged individualism.

burt, respectfully, you have a few bad takes here. the first i noticed was calling the us one of the most violent countries in the world. that's simply untrue. we have one of the lowest violent crimes rates in the the world, and when you remove major cities, where the violent crime rate is greatly influenced by minorities in gangs, we have one of the lowest in the world. a vast majority of the us does not live in major cities, but rather in suburbs and rural areas with low violent crime rates. the second is speaking to your son about how to interact around police and "crazy white folks." you absolutely should, why would you not? knowing how to interact with police alone is important because one small mistake can lead to his life, regardless of race. same applies to so called crazy white folks. this goes into the third thing i noticed, police brutality against white people. you say that there would be mass hysteria if it occurs, but it does occur, it just never makes national headlines (and if it does it's a blip for 5 minutes). there was no national outrage when daniel shaver died? how many white people were unjustly killed and it never made the news? the media has a narrative it controls and shoves down our throats with the screens in our faces. once again, respectfully, i encourage you to do more research into the topic, not reading news articles, but the actual sources news articles use (studies themselves and statistics published by a variety of places like the fbi for instance), and talk to black people around you for their thoughts before you assume it. i know i'm a year late to this but for whatever reason youtube stopped putting you in my recommendations, so there's that edit: this reminds me of the video you made when morgan wallen said the n word. you sound too preachy in this man, no offense

It’s a great song but you should really have the talk with your kids because a cop will kill their asses just as fast, the news just won’t cover it.

Funny how people twist the song too fit there political standpoint. And please stop saying "my black and brown brothers" it doesn't sound as good as you think. It makes you sound racist thinking that how black people talk they didn't all grow up in the ghetto. A lot of them are very happy and successful. I will never say " I know how you feel " because that's ignorant to say. You will never know how someone else feels or what they've been through will never be comparable to you/me or anyone

The song is about having empathy for those who have different life experiences than you. Based on what he’s posted about the song Tyler wrote this as a call for his white rural fans to try and imagine what the BLM supporters go through instead of just blindly condemning them.

I strongly disagree with his music, follow up video and you. I’m a brown man from cuba and I lived in Kentucky and I did very well over there. I think the real issue in America us minority have been groomed to feel sorry for ourselves and have a victim mentality. In his video when he was talking about how minorities are being killed because they were simply “fishing with their kids” was bullshit and just like always people leaving context out of the real story. Yes cops make mistakes as well but when they do and it’s ruled unlawful deadly force by a grand jury they get put in jail. But let’s remember that doctors make mistakes, electricians, plumbers,pilots make mistakes. Cops have a hard, hard job and they put their lives on the line for us and we need to understand that they don’t hunt for minorities they just make mistakes and then the news media makes it out to seem like they did it out of hate. Smh America is the best country for us minorities!! God blew the U.S.A

Like right off the bat - not 4 seconds into the video - your audio balance is trash. Overpowering background music while I'm trying to hear what you have to say.
