One of the only reason why the military went to kill and get rid of everything 'cause they thought it was inhumane and after Maria's death, they just left with guilt. [this was picked up from Sonic X, there was no explanation why the military left without destroying everything] Theres an official story where the ARK was raided by the Military to get rid of Shadow and another project, Bliolizard. The military missed and shot Maria out of rage, and as soon as they did they looked around the ARK and left the ARK. [This was picked up from Sonic Adventure 2] Shadow was lured in villainy because of the rage he has inside to take revenge on every human life, but in the end of Sonic Adventure 2, he realized what Maria meant and sacrificed his life to destroy his reincarnated "brother", Bliolizard.

Actually, Shadow got hurt making his vision blurry. Maria carried him to the pods and put him in one asking him to make a promise and telling him that she'd protect him, the G.U.N caught up to them as Maria grabbed the lever and told her to let it go and give Shadow to them. She disagreed and pulled the lever as one of the soldiers shot her and Shadow started crying as his pod fell into space and swore to take revenge for Maria's death

I really hope they don't shy away from Shadow's backstory. I hope they do something like in Kung Fu Panda 2 with Po's backstory where they kept it serious and let all the implications play out. I'm not saying that actually have to show Maria actually getting shot. They can cut away or imply it, but they still need to keep it serious because it's what will really make us feel for Shadow more and hopefully get us away from the "edgy, mean rival of Sonic" to a complicated hero with a hard exterior, but a heart of gold.

For those who think Shadows a villain, he’s actually an Anti-hero, at first his main goal was to destroy the earth back in his video game, but towards the end he realizes that the reason he was on earth was to protect it, and on top of that, he promised Maria, Eggmans Cousin, and Gerald Robotniks Grandaughter, that he would protect its people for her, also finding out the reason he was made was to keep Maria safe, that’s why he would keep having flashbacks on the day he fell from the space station. Ever since then he’s continued helping sonic and the freedom fighters, all with the association of G.U.N, also shadow was based off sonic (obviously), but only basic of the race of interdenominational hedgehogs sonic belongs too, and actually has Sonics DNA in him, and with the help of Black Doom, that’s why he inhabits destructive tendencies, so their ya go, don’t listen to these morons.
