3D Blast on the Saturn was actually never supposed to exist. 3D Blast genesis was supposed to be a dual release Sonic X Treme but when that got canceled they just ported 3d blast instead

The fact that Traverl's Tales actually MADE a 13 second intro running on a genesis is impressive enough. They don't get enough credit for actually making the genesis look and run more powerful than you and others think.

Director's cut is actually great. The numerous tweaks go a long way

Hear me out : Take the Saturn version and add content from the director's cut and the ability to toggle between the Genesis OST (but remixed) and the Saturn OST and BOOM, The ULTIMATE version of Sonic 3D Blast

Fun fact: The Genesis version of Sonic 3D Blast never actually released in Japan, the game only got its Japanese debut a year after Sonic Adventure released their and over a year after the Saturn was phased out for the Dreamcast.

Fun fact one of the dudes in charge of this game made a director's cut version with some restored cut content like super sonic. Thats my favorite version of 3d blast. Underrated game.

The Saturn has the best bonus stages. In ANY Sonic game. People who say half pipe stages are bad likely started with Heroes where they were at their worst.

also a note on the genesis 3d blast special stages, they DO get harder but Tails and Knuckles have their own list of 7 each and alternating between both means you never get to the hard one

Surprisingly there's actually another difference between the PC and the Saturn version besides the FPS on the CG cutscenes. The special stages are different. The halfpipe looks different and Sonic actually looks more like his in-game character than that other model they have them as on that Saturn version of the special stages. I personally prefer the Genesis version and it may be because of the music. I did once have the PC version back when I was a kid in the late '90s or was the mid '90s and forget when I got it but it was when Jack in the box you could get various PC games of well Sega games with your kids meal. There was Sonic 3D blast, there was this Sonic and knuckles collection that included Sonic the Hedgehog 3, Sonic and knuckles, as well as Sonic 3 and knuckles, and then there was a non-sonic game I also played called Bug. On a video I saw last year I found out there was actually another game from Jack in the box that I wasn't aware of at the time. I forget which game it was though but I'm pretty sure it was another Sega Saturn game

There is also the 1997 PC version, which is almost the same as the Saturn version, but it has completely different special stages. Also half-pipes, but they looked exceptionally unfinished and unbalanced.

I will defend Sonic 3D Blast with my heart and soul, I played it on a crappy emulator but I had a 3D Blast playing it.

I had it on the PC when I was a kid. I was absolutely blown away by the Rusty Ruins music. Played it on Genesis at a friends house and it bizarre to be how different they were, I just assumed one of us had a bootleg at the time

I'm a Sega fan boy. Anything negative i put my fingers in my ears and go 'nah nah nah not listening' lol... Having said that: - Sega were amazing pioneers and innovators throughout the 80's/90's. Their tech was forward thinking and driven by innovation, at times to the detriment of profit or public image. Their arcade heritage is undisputed. The Sega Saturn is an amazing console, on paper. They needed to hit the ground running. And their marketing, global business strategy and inability to 'course correct' when they could see failure were big factors in their untimely demise. Prior to Saturn: Sega of America at the time was absolutely killing it. Genesis sales were off the charts, the console war was in full swing with Nintendo. Sega released the 32X to amazing initial sales. Sega Of Japan did not want the 32X to impede sales of the Saturn which was soon to be unveiled. 32X got set aside. A huge mistake. Consumer confidence took a hit. Why kill a console/add on within a year of retail? Why buy something that won't last? Sega planned a system called the Neptune which would have brought Sega CD/Genesis/32X together in one unit but again... Saturn was the biggie for Sega Japan and all resource was funneled into Saturn as a whole multimedia offering. Second huge mistake: The disastrous US launch. Releasing the console five months early and not telling all retailers of your console you were doing so. Absolutely mad. Sega basically alienated their biggest market. Ouch. And the hits just kept on coming... No Sonic game at launch on Saturn. Sports games where sub par. Public displays of unrest and frustration at the company. Not getting over the whole FMV craze quickly enough. Extremely complex SDK and programming tools for third parties. Acquiring licenses for crap games and not paying for the good stuff (I live in the UK: No western localisation of Grandia in the UK/Europe but Sega paid through the nose for Courier Crisis. A totally crap game by comparison.) And the whole Playstation "299!" thing which is a phrase that echoes in the hearts and minds of the generation to this day. And yet after all that... The Saturn is a 2D powerhouse with forward thinking ideas of 3D space that were too complex to be utilised in a mass market. 2 x processors managing different graphic routines could've given Saturn an edge. But rarely used... The library is rich in vibrant, unique, intriguing and artistic games that defined gaming. Panzer Dragoon as a series is reverred to this day. Shining games on the Saturn are amazing RPG'S that paved the way for games like Golden Sun on GBA among others. With the optional 4MB RAM cart you had access to arcade perfect gaming thanks to Capcom. Even Sega's 'clone' of Resident Evil called Deep Fear had some unique gameplay elements and story beats that gave it a fresh angle. Saturn Bomberman: Gorgeous 2D sprite work with a huge amount of additional content and battle modes. And the famous 'Hi-Ten' mode using a hi-res graphics mode that allowed for TEN players to play at once on a single machine (2 x multi taps and ten controllers BUT STILL). Google: Bulk Slash - Google: Astal - Google: Guardian Heroes. The list goes on and on and on... The Saturn is NOT a filler console. The 32X unfortunately was the filler. Much respect on the vid.

I love Sonic 3D Blast. It's an interesting Sonic game. I like both versions of the game and soundtracks. I really enjoy playing through the unqiue zones, vibing to the soundtrack, and just having a good tine with it. Speaking of which, I've been researching Sonic 3D Blast's Genesis and Saturn OST because I am actually working as a music composer for a Fangame which is a Sonic 3D Blast Remake called "Sonic 3D Blast: Advanced Engine". Making new music tracks for Sonic 3D Blast is going to be a challenge. I really enjoyed this video! Keep it up Shaulov!!! 👍

Sonic 3D blast is my favorite sonic game

I didn’t grew up with a Sega Saturn. But upon learning this over the years through the internet, I was fascinated to see all the visual musical differences between versions. And even though I grew up with the Genesis one, I recognize what was better in the Saturn version. It’s interesting that the Genesis version is a port. But I guess it was a late Genesis game too. You explained it perfectly that what is overall better from a personal standpoint is all a matter of preference. Because for the most part, both offer something good in their own right. But the core objective gameplay remains the same.

Diamond Dust started the trend, it was used before, but it was the first time that it was used so mainly...

Volcano Valley Act 2 on Genesis is the theme song of my life.

The PC version is also different from Saturn and Genesis version. More like it is in the middle ground between the two. It has the Saturn stage graphics minus the effects like rain and fog, the music is the same from Saturn, but the special stages are a simplified 3D half pipe similar but inferior than the Saturn version, with only rings and obstacles like the Genesis version, without the springs and platforms like the Saturn version.

Wish there was a Directors Cut for the Saturn version. It could be possible though.

If Sega put the camera behind Sonic and changed his model to the one from the special stages they could have marketed it as a new game

Man I loved this vid. I always thought that the Saturn version was just a port with a different special stage, that I was always told that was "meh". I think I enjoy more the Genesis Soundtrack, but the Saturn Soundtrack seemed to be a nice banger. I'm definitely gonna try the Saturn version now. I definitely loved the Special Stage. It looked so cinematic that I wouldn't believe it's a 1996 game.

I think between the Genesis and Saturn versions I prefer the Saturn version because of the weather effects and soundtrack (Diamond dust act 2 theme is so amazing). But the directors cut version of the game is definitely the best, because of added super sonic, it made the game easier to control, it added a hub world, and an actual save system (which the Genesis and Saturn version lacked I think) Great video!!

For me, mainly, I do prefer them Mega Drive/Genesis version because I find the OST better, in my opinion. But the Saturn OST is great too.

Sonic 3D blast wasn’t my favourite Sonic game, but I really loved playing it as a kid. I still have never finished it because it’s such a challenging game (for me, I don’t claim to be an amazing gamer) so I still have fun playing it. I love the Genesis soundtrack to my core, I used to turn the Genesis on just to listen to the music in the start menu sometimes. Pre lofi on RU-vid I guess lol

I’m a huge Sonic fan, both OST is good, but I’m more of the Saturn version than Genesis. Of course, Sonic always have games when it comes to good OSTs cause Sonic music is imo the best in gaming, there’s a discussion on which OST of Sonic CD is better? US or Japan/Europe? I’m leaning towards the US version. Just like the Saturn version of Sonic 3D Blast, the OST fits the atmosphere of the Zones/Level, and it can translate to reality. You can listen to the Saturn OST of Rusty Ruins Act 1 or 2 on a rainy day, or Diamond Dust Act 1 or 2 on a Christmas Day or season. Sonic music perfectly fits the mood of world we live in, maybe that’s me. LOL

I have never played the Sega Saturn version of Sonic 3D blast because I do not have a Sega Saturn. But wouldn't mind trying it for the Saturn. One thing that would of probably helped in my opinion for the Sega Genesis version would be an Analog stick. I think that would help because Sonic is so slippery and make him hard to control. If Sonic team would of made the game Sonic would of probably felt the same as he did in the 2D games. But still is a good game and very under rated in my opinion. It was my first Sonic title for my Sega Genesis I got the trilogy later to finish out my Sonic collection.

i have to say that the intro on the Mega Drive version is more impressive than the Saturn version. SURE the Saturn version has way better looking demo, but name a CD based gaming console that wasn't capable of fmv's now make same list but about Cd consoles that weren't able to do so. my point is that, it was far more impressive seeing Mega Drive do that intro video than the Saturn one.

The Genesis version has some nice music... It would be a shame if someone were to badly convert it into the DS soundfont and stick it in a subpar unfinished RPG.

The Saturn's visual upgrades are great, but the slow load times aren't fun. I personally preferred the Genesis/Mega Drive special stages to the Saturn version half pipe versions. I find them kind of annoying. The full pipe style in Knuckles Choatix is more approachable compared to a half pipe. I still find myself going back to the Genesis/Mega Drive port, even though I own it and the Saturn port.

I dont play 3D Blast that much anyway but if i pop in Sonic Mega Collection or any of the Sonic collections, its always the Genesis version, even SEGA seems to prefer that one

I'd take the Genesis soundtrack any day. I hated the CD audio they had to shoehorn in CD games at the time. It was always bad Sonic Foundry ACiD loop music or crappy Roland MT midi songs. I'm glad to see 3D Blast get some love though, it was a good game

I've actually played both versions, but didn't notice/remember the differences. It's probably because I played them years apart and honestly hate the game. Still, interesting stuff 👍🏽

The At Games Sega Genesis was that really bad clone with the built in games. I had this game for the Genesis when it came out, I found out about the level select by accident when I tilted my Genesis around with this game when it was turned on.

you used an unofficial saturn controller in the thumbnail, the actual one doesny have thumvsticks and if you look closely at the one used in the thimbnail it has a home button in the middle which the saturn did NOT have i know this cause i actually wanna buy the controller used in the thumbnail

the best thing about this game on Saturn is the bonus stage. The gameplay is so slow, repetitive and boring. Goes to show how Sega dropped the ball massively with Saturn. When this came out, a mere 16 bit game with better colors and music, PS1 was getting Crash Bandicoot and Super Mario 64 was already out.
