1:07 The slow typing and simplistic "SHADOW" coming on the screen, the camera cut into the slow rotation with Shadow staring straight at Sonic with matching speeds. Not to mention that max in game character running speed starting out. Whoever directed this whole sequence was a genius. Truly iconic.
Also to add the falling platforms if you played that fight out like it was supposed to be. If it were done today, there would have been quicktime events I'm sure or at least forced grinding mechanics.
@SharinganSakura YESSS it pains me that every SINGLE game after could never nail how smooth Shadow skated while also displaying speed. I used Shadow in the chao garden just to watch him run and he just skates so effortlessly
@@bruiseleeroy7010 true. I hope that, if some day they decide to make a remake of this game, the Shadow's running animation be fixed and stay exactly the same skatings' building.
Greatest scene in the whole game, the audio is fucked up and BGM is too high. I love it, the things nostalgia just skips over and says "YOU ENJOY IT STFU"! XD
@Starscream91 You're either trolling or legitimately stupid, Sonic Adventure 1 came before this one and it's sound mixing was way better. Even then, this is the Xbox/PC/PS3 version of adventure 2, and they didn't even fix the sound mixing here. Don't try to defend something that you know was bad. "Wasn't as easy back then" my ass, they could have simply toned down the music volume or turn up the voice volume, don't be dumb.
"I see. But you know, I can't let you live. Your adventuring days are coming to an end." Absolutely badass. Especially considering how it plays so perfectly off of what Sonic just said.
There is something just... amazing about this scene. Yeah, I know the audio didn't exactly age well. But honestly, it doesn't bother me that much. This is the best interaction between Sonic and Shadow in the series and probably the best interaction between hero and villain in the series, too. There was something special about them both finally reaching (what they thought was) the end. And while I enjoyed their trash talk towards one another back in the prison island level, them now admitting their respect for one another while getting ready to have their final clash gave me chills. And the music, them gradually picking up speed as the conversation goes on, and knowing that the stakes are high on both ends... it just got me so amped up. And say what you will about the cheesy lines in Sonic the Hedgehog, but I think this was some of the best written dialogue on gaming, with just the right amount of cheesiness. SA2 was just something fantastic and this scene is why. Best video game rivalry in my opinion.
Very well said Sonic isn't nessarly known to be badass it has this kiddy kinda feel or out look on it yo everyone despite some of the darker games such as SA2 but this scene perfectly shows why I love the series it was so well done
@BruiseLeeRoy Sonic and Shadow to me are different styles in terms of cool or dopness. Using cars as an analogy: Sonic: R-34 Skyline Shadow: Chevrolet Camaro
You get a pretty dramatic conversation between Sonic and Shadow, And then you get a final boss which you literally can just spam the homing attack and bam, Final Boss defeated. IMO, This boss kinda sucked. (23 seconds and the fight was over, like come on man)
Nobody’s calling it bad because of the sound mixing. It’s just annoying that the music is making it impossible to hear the confrontation in the first place
@@ethnictendo no, sega fell off after the dreamcast failed. Sonic adventure 2 was at the hieght of Sega's career. Sega make half ass games now and had to rely on a fan to make a good sonic game like sonic mania
Sonic: You can't catch me. I'm the fastest thing alive Shadow: I was thinking about why so many of the radical left participate in "speed running" Sonic: Huh? Shadow: The reason is the left's lack of work ethic Sonic: What? Shadow: "Go fast" instead of "Do it right", and in a Petersonian sense Sonic: Petersonian? Shadow: To elevate alternative sexual archetypes in the market place "Fastest Hedghog" Sonic: SHADOW WHAT THE FUCK ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT Shadow: You're a beta male, Sonic Thank you all for the likes. I forgot all about this comment
Shadow's coolness, Sonic's warmth, the walking, jogging to running transition and that 1:07 intro Blew my 11-year-old mind. Cheers to you 90s babies - We had it good!
Perfectly said. I remember being in pre-school/kindergarten thinking I wanted to be just like this guy wanting to find my Shadow equivalent. No fucks given haha
Sonic's Tinder Profile- Sonic: 15 "What you see is what you get! Just a guy that loves adventure! I'm 3'3, because apparently that matters. The girl in the pic isn't my girlfriend"
I'm just now realizing the symbolism of this scene and the game as a whole: at their first meeting, Sonic felt as if he were staring into a dark mirror of himself, the fake hedgehog. Later, when they met in Green Forest/White Jungle, Shadow turns the tables, accusing Sonic of being the pale reflection of himself, the ultimate lifeform. Finally, we come to this scene, where Sonic has just used Chaos Control to warp out of the exploding capsule with a "fake" Chaos Emerald, a technique he learned by watching Shadow, the "fake hedgehog," perform it with a "real" one. They learn here that neither of them was the faker, and both of them were the real deal. After all, the "fake emerald" was indistinguishable from the real one because it had the same wavelength and properties. Why then couldn't these two ultra-powerful hedgehogs be likewise? Thanks for coming to my Ted Talk.
As silly as it is I’m seeing a lot of parallels between this and jungian psychology, starting with the name Shadow lol the music in this game is brilliant as well, from the tracks with vocals in particular, live and learn as well as escape from the city invoke many an esoteric symbol, shadows ost for escaping from the jungle is called “rhythm and balance”, hell the notion of chaos control is essentially the union between Eros and logos, chaos and regularity respectively, they were wrinkling our brains with one!
@Super Mario Blake SMB Agreed. This game is easily the best version of Shadow. Which makes sense considering this was supposed to be his first and last game.
I don't care how bad this game aged, the story was brilliant, that's really what made this game so amazing, plus the music, stage designs, and of course, Chao World!
@@keon200 aged well, but somethings didn’t aged well, camera, knuckles radar(sa1 had a better radar and tikal and in sa2,the computers sucks and there is no Tikal to help making his stages less boring compared to the other two gameplays)
@@sadsupermarket765 you mean piss easy. what is the point of searching for emeralds if she finds them for you? The hints reward knowledge of the levels and make it fun to explore with knuckles' smooth controls.
Another great analogy as I'm sure this rivalry between Sonic and Shadow was probably based off of Goku and Vegeta's rivalry considering how many similarities Sonic does have to Goku and Shadow to Vegeta especially since the creator of Sonic did draw a lot of inspiration from dragon Ball considering that's how super sonic came to be from Goku super Saiyan transformation
Nah, it could be a parody to his first appearance in the hero's story "It's all starts with this... an envelope containing the invitation to Smash Ultimate!"
I'd also love a "Found you, Faker!"-type of scene, where it fakes out into a Mii costume or something and then Shadow gets announced... And then SA2 HD or SA3 :')
This game made Shadow my favorite character, but looking back on it, Sonic was pretty impressive as well. He learned Shadow’s Chaos Control on the first try (with a fake emerald no less) and avoided dying when he was supposed to.
0:52 Best Part, Video shows they have a Mutual Respect and when the Music Kick in it shows the Final Battle is about to begin as they Start to Speed Up.
@@punkfluff3395 So would i. It's the one game i want most out of the Sonic series. However, i doubt it will ever be made. The expectations for a game called Sonic Adventure 3 are too high, and modern Sonic Team may not be able to fill them.
@@joshuaortiz5141 Sonic Adventure 2 was in 2001, Naruto released in 2002 (Plus sonic was already running with his hands behind his back in Sonic CD, a *1993* game)
Agreed 💯. If they're planning on a SA1 remake I really hope they bring back the majority of the original voice actors. Sonic Adventure wouldn't feel right with the current cast.
i know the sound design is bad, but i've always loved this scene. Something about it is very well done. I think what it is is that the music is used a portrayal between the tension of sonic and shadow, because they BOTH know they did not just come here to meet up to talk. They had to fight, and the fact they both kept picking up pace at the same time with the music shows that they both knew exactly what the other person was thinking. I think this does a very good job and does well showing what rivalry looks like despite the fact they didnt know each other for that long.
Story wise Adventure 2 was one of the best Sonic stories. Throughout the game whenever Sonic and Shadow meet Shadow has much higher ground and looks down on Sonic every time because he sees Sonic as beneath him. But as the game progresss Sonic does so much from Escaping prison, defeating The Egg Gollum, getting to the Arc, and even managing to induce a Chaos control at this point when they meet Shadow is standing on equal ground with Sonic and look at him at his level because he sees Sonic as his equal finally. See subtext like that was never in meta era games or even in Dark era games when the stories were really good like Unleashed. Heck even as good as Frontiers story was it didn't have subtext like that.
@@thelegacyofgaming2928 i feel that at the end of sa2 shadow sees sonic as a true equal.both by seeing what sonic can do and also sating his "ultimate lifeform" ego. Which later sonic games will completely ignore as he acts like very different. Heroes, shadow and even 06 were consistant with his character even if it did feel like they stepped backwerds. Tho by games since then have completely tossed that out. Heroes shadow and 06 was an amazing story for shadow. Heroes dealt with him not knowing who he is and the robot tease. Then shadow follows up with the uncertainty and mutiple people having reasons for shadow by manipulating his memory loss and information about his past. 06 continued that showing that shadow had well and truely put the past behind him and him selflessly helping silver even without mucb reason to and to help sonic because he feels that equal between them
After 06, even starting with Unleashed, but especially with Colors they just stopped being anything resembling Sonic and actually being cool, having spectical, and telling a serious story. (Lighter or darker in tone)
I haven't grew up with this game at all but I will admit, this scene looks so cool. Ignoring the production value, I like how Sonic and Shadow are portrayed and the build up to it was amazing. I wish future Sonic games have moments like this in them.
Aside from the music being obnoxiously loud, the dialogue in this scene was all it needed to be for this interaction between arguably 2 of the most iconic rivals in video game history. I don't really consider it cheesy seeing as how Sonic is basically describing himself as a character, whom many have pointed out doesn't really go through any real changes in the first place. Just dull the volume on the BGM a bit, time the characters speaking better so it doesn't feel like they're talking over or interrupting each other, and you have a truely classic scene in Sonic game history that's hard to outdo imo.
Also should be noted a lot of the camera work like the panning opening shot, to the zoom in on the emerald, to the zoom out where they run into the void. Pretty damn good for early 3d games.
In most scenes, I prefer when characters cut over each other. It shows a sign of urgency, and when they are HERO/DARK, it makes more sense, since they are on polorized sides anyway. Shadow really doesn't care what Sonic has to say in the beginning, and Sonic is fueled by revenge when he interrupts Shadow in the forest.
"I promised Maria to get revenge." "You're wrong, Shadow. That image playing over and over in your head like a GIF, it's not the truth." "It's pronounced jif" "Huh?" ".GIF, like the peanut butter. The Creator said so." "That's dumb. It's Graphics Interchange Format." "The P in JPEG stands for Photographic, but I bet you don't say JPHEG." "P on it's own isn't pronounced like F, that's totally different." "It's exactly the same!" "Name ONE word that starts with G pronounced like J." "Gentrification." "Shoot, should've thought of that, I was just in San Francisco!" "For your logic to be consistent, you'd have to say "subba" or "laseer'. " "Yeah? Well you'd have to say J-PEJ! ...Wait laser is an acronym?" "Light amplification by stimulated emission of radiation." "Huh, didn't know that. ...You're still wrong, though." "You just hate me because I'm right." "I just hate you in general." "You mean in *gen-er-al* ." "Ugh, I am *going* to kill you!"
This scene always gets me because it proves that Tails was able to create a fake Chaos emerald with powers that nearly rival the original. Now imagine he created seven more of those
Amazing how they both start off with a friendly conversation, and then they both remember their objectives. Sonic knows who’s truly evil and who’s being used for a pawn.
If this soundtrack doesn’t play, as Sonic and Shadow reenact this scene in Sonic the Hedgehog 3 movie then SEGA, Paramount idk what to tell you… you fumbled.
