I thing i really love about Sonic's soundtracks are how they remix songs for different acts, sweet mountain has 3 variations with very interesting differences. Also, Sonic's current sound and music director (2006 onwards) is Tomoya Ohtani, a hell of a bass player ;)
Probably one of the most unique songs by Kenichi Tokoi. It was honestly more annoying to me as a kid when it just sounded like noise, but I better appreciate what was accomplished here…even if I’m still not entirely huge on it.
You have a good point, there is a lot of Sonic music that doesn't necessarily tie into setting. There's plenty that does however! But yeah, even in Sonic Generations you can unlock different songs from across the series and play each level and choose from whatever songs you have unlocked so you're definitely onto something
Sonic the hedgehog music has been a constant in my life since i was about 6, especially adventure snd heroes' soundtracks. The games are often considered underwhelming but there is no question that the music has always been great. If you have not followed any of it since sonic 3 there are hundreds of tracks you might be suggested, a lot from Sonic Unleashed and Sonic Generations in particular. My suggestions are "Pyramid cave" or "meteor herd" from sonic adventure 2, or the "big arms remix" from sonic generations.
Unfortunately I requested all the songs that happen to prove your theory right 🤣. There is plenty of sonic music that reflects the setting. Some examples would be "Planet Wisp Act 1" from Sonic Colors, and "Savannah Citidel - Day" and "Cool Edge - Day" from Sonic Unleashed.
I think Unleashed as a whole gets the music very accurate for its settings. Probably because it's based on regular Earth and is a globe-trotting adventure - each area is inspired by a certain country/culture, so they use the music styles from the real life places too.
This one piece flows so well. I always remember these levels being super high intensity and insane rollercoaster style. Then I play it and it’s WAY lower in intensity then what I remember. BUT! The music ALONE amps this way higher than it is. It catching my drive and desire to run hard is the hallmark here. It’s driving my pulse higher and engaging my flow quick and to the point (also the same effect comes in the last two levels in the game). Love this game, love this music. Like most amazing tracks it not only uplifts the game you play but ENHANCES it! And it’s exactly WHY I skipped the rerelease. It’s a crying shame I cannot enjoy this 1:1 on modern hardware.
While I would rarely ever say there is a videogame song from some franchises that are not, as they say, "a bop", within Sonic specifically I am fond of the songs with vocals. I would be amused to see: Sonic Boom (intro and credits versions) City Escape (original, Generations act 1...and screw it, act 2 as well) Reach for the Stars. It Doesn't Matter (SA2 version) We Can Team Chaotix Sonic Heroes. Don't know if any of those are disqualified by default, but I'd love to see you hear them.
I'm not into playing Sonic myself but I had fun watching a friend play through some of them including Colors, which is a sidescroller. That said I don't remember this song at all! I remember quite liking Aquarium Park. This was a fun song anyway and appreciate your dissection of it. Sonic music is just a fun time. Steam Gardens was from Odyssey :), though I'm surprised Mario Galaxy hasn't come up yet or maybe they're still coming.
Weirdly enough, out of all the songs in Sonic Colors' ost, the ones I go back to the least are always the Sweet Mountain tracks Yes, it's fantastic, but I feel Sonic Colors is at it's peak in Tropical Resort, Starlight Carnival and Planet Wisp, at least music-wise, not to mention the Final Boss, cause that one just pulls all the stops
I haven't played Colours and I never heard this one until now. It's bloomin' awesome! edit: I said a lot of nonsense after this because I got two games mixed up with each other
I feel like you were kind of accurate with the “interchangeable” music up until Sonic ‘06. I feel like since then the music matches up a lot more with the environments.
I know this is from an year ago but I wished you also react to act 2 and 3, they are both different themes but are still part of sweet mountain, act 2 is my favorite out of it
@@MilanTehVillain I just meant as a franchise. The music was always great in context, but I usually forgot everything about their music as soon as I stopped hearing it. Plenty of people love it which is great. It just doesn't do it for me
