The best part is that “Big Arms” wasn’t even in the “main” version of Generations on console and PC. It was in the afterthought 3DS version (which had different levels) that barely anyone played. And then this song is in only that 3DS version and it goes hard like it’s in some big budget AAA title.

Yes!! Yes, you HAVE been missing out on so much Sonic music!! In Sonic Generations, they did a great job at taking those classic tracks and remaking and rearranging them. A bit of in-game context, since I think there's some cool things here to think about: The main stages in Sonic Generations are remakes of stages from all throughout Sonic history, from Sonic 1 to Sonic Colors. Every stage has both a "classic" and a "modern" version with each featuring their own background music. At first, the classic versions of the early stages that were taken from Sonic 1, 2 or 3 were more directly styled after their original versions, whereas for the modern versions of those stages, they basically had to adapt the concepts and ideas of the original stages to fit the style of modern sonic games, like Sonic Unleashed or Sonic Colors. As you progress through the game, these sides switch and now you have modern sonic stages remade in the style of classic Sonic games. Essentially: They made the classic to fit the modern, but later on, they made the modern to fit the classic. It's cool to see how these sides switch. They did the same thing with the soundtrack: At first, the classic version of a tracks background music is usually a more direct remake of the original track, whereas for the modern version, they rearranged it more freely and took more creative liberties. And as the original versions of those stages got more modern, it slowly became the modern versions of the background tracks that were more directly remade after the original, whereas the classic versions required them to take the original tracks and remake them in the style of classic Sonic games OST. Again: They made the classic to fit the modern, but later on, they made the modern to fit the classic. I probably worded this in the most weird and confusing way possible, but I hope it's still understandable. I just think it's a really cool thing to think about. The Generations version is what happens when you take the guitar of Jun Senoue (Crush 40) & combine it with the keyboard of Alex Makhlouf (Cash Cash).

That extended keyboard/guitar solo and harmony section in the Generations remix by itself is one of the best parts of the entire soundtrack for me. It just goes SO HARD AND DOESN'T STOP!

This song is special to me because of how epic and legitimately threatening that boss fight was. You beat the second boss and you think you've won. Then the sky suddenly darkens and this music starts. Then this spiked mech with rather large arms quickly zooms by in the background. You the player, likely armed with the power and reassurance of Super Sonic, rush in confidently expecting another easy win, only for Eggman to then proceed to body slam the rings out of you, forcing you to beat the boss for real. I only had Sonic 3 Alone for a long time, so this was the Final Boss to me until I eventually got a Sonic & Knuckles cart, and it was an appropriately difficult and dramatic moment.

Has to be my favorite reaction of yours, you beautifully demonstrate how you can just be carried by a song without a care in the world. It’s when Jun Senoue gets heard back to back with the classic goodness that you can really appreciate just how phenomenally orchestrated the classics were and how raw and powerful the new stuff has been while still carrying that torch.

One of my favorite things about the Generations remake of Big Arms is that is takes the original song and just amps up the instruments that were already there. A pure upgrade that stays fully true to the original, and it is absolutely perfect!

The original mix is a solid track on its own, but the Generations remix is one of the best glowups I've seen in game music. As an amateur musician myself, I usually find myself thinking of what I'd do different when listening to a song. I still had thoughts on this track, but this is the first track where I can only think of alternate options that aren't necessarily improvements.

I'd probably consider this the pinnacle of Sonic music. Like, the original was one of my favourite VGMs of all time; as a kid, I actually just plugged my earphones into the MegaDrive (Genesis), unlocked the sound test by ear (because the TV was in use), and listened to this song on loop for a while. This remix in Generations, despite not getting fully utilised within the game, is just that same song being evolved and ascended to become something glorious. It's one of the few pieces of music, in general, I would consider "perfect". It keeps on giving and transforming as it goes on, without changing its character and overall sound, kinda like Master of Puppets. It's a hell of an experience.

Jun Senoue put his god damn essence into these songs for Gens 3DS, which is funny, since the game itself is a 6/10 at best version of the console game

The music was what actually ended up getting me really into Sonic when I was younger. I remember having a moment a bit like yours here, just getting lost in the guitar and drums- it was like a moment of revelation for me. I'm not into the games the same as I was then, but Sonic music remains really special to me, even if that might seem goofy.

Not gonna lie, I had the exact same reaction when I first heard the remixed version on Sonic Generations. I actually intentionally avoided defeating the boss so I could hear the full version. It was so overwhelming and amazing.

Hell yeah! This music was just awesome. So many of them translate awesomely into metal guitar songs, it's uncanny. Some of my favourite guitar covers come from a dude who did all of the Sonic 3 OST on guitar. Fun fact: the music (and game) plays slower on PAL MegaDrive/Genesis than on NTSC version, so most versions you can find online or in emulators don't sound "right" compared to how they sounded to me on original hardware back in the day when I was a kid.

I am considering myself a hardcore sonic fan, and yet I have missed out on that gem for so fcking long. Thanks for showing me my new fac sonic track EVER. I love the 3D games and barely enjoyed any of the 2Ds except Master System, CD and Mania. So my love for the tracks usually goes to those games rather than 2Ds. But THIS changed me xD Also, I enjoyed how you were caught off guard like 3 times by the song in less than 3 seconds or so. Very nice ^^

Would have been awesome if the requester followed up with the version of this song from Sonic Chronicles. Apparently they had to remake the whole soundtrack for that game on short notice and most of the soundtrack got butchered just before release. As someone who spent more time listening to the music than playing the games when i heard the full version of that song, it blew my freaking mind, how did they turn a music that just by itself had so much heavyness to it, and turned into that freaking monster of a track, and that sound was coming out a 3Ds SPEAKER that was insane to me. Now, one small piece of advice i'm giving you i'm not sure if others have pointed out, most modern games beginning with Sonic Adventure 1 had full albums with the songs put out, most songs in these CDS have completely different arrangements than the loop versions of the games, i suggest listening to Emerald Coast first, the the game version and then listen to the album version.

The breakdown at the end is just bliss.

I did a cursory run through other comments to this point to see if anyone else mentioned it. Originally Micheal Jackson helped to compose the Sonic 3 OST but the credit for it was mutually cut as he wasn’t happy with the Genesis sound chip quality and when Sonic 3 was in development he was in legal trouble due to sexual misconduct allegations against him and Sega didn’t want the bad press. The music for Launch Base Zone, Icecap Zone, and Carnival Night have the most famous links as you can overlap them with other songs. The closing credits also overlap with Stranger in Moscow. The normal composer finished the OST without Micheal Jackson but kept his contributions, but it was agreed to not credit him.

The fact that this song just keeps building on itself as it keeps going while still keeping the main identity of the song shows how much of a masterpiece this song is

I forget if this was one of the boss themes or the final boss theme... But yeah, there's a great variety of Sonic music to experience, especially if you stopped at 3... Although typically you might be able to split it into eras, types of games (like the 2D games somewhat followed the old styles of things, while the 3D ones went a bit more rock or punk... With maybe one or two exceptions)... Although, if you were playing Sonic Adventure 2, you have stuff like Knuckles stages being more hip hop, while Rouge has kinda spy/espionage style music (or whatever you call it)... Also, games like Sonic Generations and Sonic Mania do a pretty cool job of rearranging/remixing older Sonic music too.

As someone who beat this game within a couple weeks of release, I'm physically ill thinking about how I slept on this track. With typically less than a minute of it in actual gameplay, I had no idea it went this hard.

There used to be a RU-vid channel that uploaded 30 minute extensions of video game songs called BrawlBRSTMSx 3. I held it very near and dear to my heart because I used to listen to their channel's videos all the time back when I was in middle and high school, but unfortunately Nintendo copyright stroke the channel into oblivion and it is gone forever. It was a go-to RU-vid channel for maybe Millions of viewers any time they wanted to listen to music for studying or cleaning. They had playlists for hundreds upon hundreds of games! I don't remember all of their most popular videos, but Big Arms was one of the top 15 most viewed videos, and it was what introduced me to this absolute banger of a song. I wish I remembered more songs from their "most-popular" section, but all that I remember is that "Masked Dedede" from Kirby Triple Deluxe was #1, so it gets my reccomendation for you to listen to!

No need to worry about the lack of breakdown, I don't think I could have asked for a better reaction to Big Arm. 😁 The first time I heard this remix, in addition to the hype, I teared up with joy. I grew up with Sonic Mega Collection which had the classic trilogy in it, so this boss theme was stuck in my head for ages as it was pretty hard to beat without Super Sonic as a kid. Hell, even with Super Sonic he can still hit you and knock you out of it. Anyways, I never thought the original could be elevated so much. Sonic Generations is the 20th Anniversary game for the series and yeah, they went all out with the soundtrack (and the game in general, honestly). I believe this remix was done by Cash Cash! It also features Jun Senoue, whose name I'm sure you will come to know in due time as he is quite synonymous with Sonic music post-classic era. Some of his very first work in the series was with Sonic 3 & Knuckles. I'm glad you also felt it in your soul Jesse. Hits me every time. You nailed it on the head as to why it's so enjoyable to watch these videos, and I would be lying if I said it didn't mean a lot to me to see such a genuine reaction like this. Vicariously reliving childhood or otherwise past moments? Sounds about right, even though I never realized it until you said it. I'm mostly like, "I'm so happy to see someone else like and appreciate music I also like, even tho they don't have the nuance/context that makes it EVEN BETTER." That aside, Sonic soundtracks are typically great- the music is usually the first thing to be praised, especially after Sonic 3. Big Arms still hits years later, but that second version is freaking cracked! I hope you get to hear one of the night themes from Sonic Unleashed haha

Love this song. I think it's among the best boss tracks in a game. It just sounds like a final boss. A threatening final boss that actually makes you want to fight it because you'll feel badass (even if the boss isn't that hard).

Sonic games: mostly garbage, a few great games Sonic music: mostly mind-blowing bangers, a few decent tracks. Seriously, do more sonic. Sonic spinball is a great one to look into.

The Gens version dropped a lot of the subtle harmonies that really made the original track a masterpiece of FM, but the expanded melody really is delightful.
