as someone who's childhood consist of DanTDM and PopularMMOs doing mod reviews for Minecraft, everything looks normal to me, even the most complex mods with plenty of love and care are a bit janky because the game engine is very limited.
9:34 The Minecraft physics engine can perfectly well implement a glide that is triggered by pressing the jump twice, that's exactly what an item in the base game known as the Elytra does. Sega though could throw the excuse of not knowing Minecraft is capable of this type of movement in the base games engine but Mojang has no excuse.
@@TechBlade9000 then I guess Mojang has an excuse then. It being that they're not respon- wait no, are they the ones who authorized it however, does this need to pass a quality check first?
@@Solesteam Mojang only select a few levels and a few different characters when testing. Infact, the people that test the DLC are random people from the Minecraft Dungeons staff team (or atleast thats what i heard), so its very possible the play-testers didnt know Knuckles could glide.
I genuinely think this could’ve been saved by including a level editor, or at least an easy way to use the assets in your own world. Alas, that’s sadly not the case, soooo yeah we’re still stuck with just a few levels and that’s it.
Its better on other devices don't blame the switches crappy functionality there is nothing actually wrong with this mod you guys just wanna hate on sonic so knock it off.
What's funny is that the main sonic event was on the hive(a minecraft server). The marketplace one was side content. Also the server one was free to play and so much fun. The sonic event that happened after the timer went down eggman/robotnik takeover.
I'm not an english native speaker so when I saw the title I though about the most used online form of peg, good thing that you put an image when you mentioned it on the video
As an English speaker, just a quick correction, its "PUT" not "PUTTED" even in the tense ur using it, "putted" is not a word. All respect given tho, just a correction of ur grammar
also as a native english speaker, it's "title", not "tittle". tittle is the name for the dots on top of letters like i and j. but that's just nitpicking
Minecraft is square with some rectangles scattered around Sonic has round slopes and sometimes with some geometric objects This is a brilliant idea that can't go wrong in any way.
17:46 I can see why they chose that as the special stage, it's something Minecraft and Sonic has in common, there's a few well known maps that implement a very similar design to those special stages, jump down a hole and don't splatter into the floor, except the goal is surviving, not collecting 7 magic gems.
Sonic: A platformer with several branching paths and interesting level gimmicks Minecraft: A game where you can do literally anything you want, with an infinite world Sonic Minecraft DLC: Incredibly linear levels that are just the same handful of copy-pasted setpieces
Considering how easy it is to be labeled a "transphobe", I don't think it's right to freak out at that accusation. I don't know what Notch specifically said, but Rowling said something that was eminently reasonable (that you should respect trans people's genders but that sex still exists) and she still got dogpiled for it. The fact of the matter is that if you have even the slightest disagreement with the trans activist lobby, you become a persona non grata. It seems like there are a lot of people out there convinced this is their modern day civil rights movement and are desperate to be on the right side of history, while ignoring that sometimes other people have valid points. Unless you're actively saying that trans people should be killed or have rights stripped away from them, you're not a transphobe. Saying that biological women need spaces away from biological men is not hateful. Hell, even saying that trans women are still biologically men is not transphobic, since it's actually true and has certain implications regarding things like deciding where criminals go to prison. And even if you disagree with all those positions, it's wrong to label someone as hateful and contribute to their unpersoning by perpetuating that lie.
It is pretty dishonest to claim that the only thing that all that JK Rowling said is "sex is real". Just recently she made a tweet which implied that trans women were rapists, or at least that men were claiming to be trans women to rape them, which there is no evidence to support is actually happening. She has also defended a person who compared being transgender to blackface, and used a rejected study that used dubious data collection methods to claim that there is an epidemic of girls transition who aren't really transgender, which isn't actually happening. When saying that cis women need spaces away from "biological men", you are basically saying that you don't care about the safety of trans women, who are at a greater safety risk when they aren't allowed in women's spaces. There is, again, no evidence to suggest that letting trans women in women's spaces puts cis women at a greater risk. What Notch said was also worse than what JK Rowling said. He called being transgender a "delusion" and a "mental illness". I don't know how calling transgender people delusional could be defended as not transphobic.
I watched that first stream. That was painful. I wasn't sure how you could find any good in the bad aside from the fanservice. You managed to find plenty to talk about. You are truly a master of your craft.
8:13 Man, that sounds terrible. I'd hate to play with control like that. I really uh........really hope that sort of thing never makes its way into the actual Sonic games. Wouldn't THAT be SUCH A PAIN? YUP. S-SURE WOULD.... *Stares judgmentally at Sonic Forces*
It's always nice to know a content creator you like is not a transphobe. Not that I assumed you were, but it's nice just knowing you're not, I've been surprised before.
Honestly, although the quality of the DLC was pretty inconsistent at times, I can certainly say with confidence (as both a Sonic and Minecraft player) that seeing Sky Sanctuary with such a _beautiful_ blockset makes me salty that those cream-coloured bricks aren't in the main game.
"why can't I enjoy these things without the creators being absolute garbage" 11:06 - 11:10 this is something a lot of people seem to misunderstand these days. you are allowed to enjoy/play/consume a product even if you don't like the artist/creator. enjoying that work does not validate their views, and neither does it invalidate yours.
I can't tell you how much I agree with this statement. Without HP Lovecraft generations of my favorite artists and in turn art wouldn't exist. My life would genuinely worse without his work. He also would've had me killed if he'd had the chance with how insanely racist he was. But without his work, some of my favorite stories wouldn't have been told. His hate died with him but his work and legacy lives on. Now people are finding ways to grapple with how his hate influenced art and how to address that in modern interpretations. Long story short. Notch is an ignorant chud, but that has next to nothing to do with minecraft. Like not at all.
Yeah minecraft sonic ain't that good but it's not terrible, i feel like it more of microsoft trying to make more money by making "dlcs" on some property that why most people play java instead of bedrock because bedrock is more of plz give money and a down graded version of minecraft. Plus bedrock isn't the best way to play minecraft so having a sonic game on that version of minecraft was a bad idea
I can't help but wonder if you would have had a much better time with this if you had played some vanilla Minecraft beforehand. Things like Knuckles' glide were so easy for me to become accustomed to because, well, it's built on Minecraft gameplay. I saw it and was like "ah, its like Riptide combined with the Elytra, cool" and never worried about it again. Things like the sprint button I expected to be there because I've been playing Minecraft and doing high speed parkour maps since I was 11. Not disparaging your critique and I definitely agree with you in a lot of places, but some things seem like somebody who's never played Minecraft before coming in to play a Sonic game instead of a hybrid
Knuckles' glide still doesn't make sense then though. Minecraft has elytra, now I'm not sure if they were using any actual items to help with the physics but it wouldn't be too farfetched to just automatically equip invisible elytra wings to work as Knuckles' glide, right? This isn't even a game-mechanic problem, it's pure stupidity on their end
@@saiqa7130 true, but if they're changing the ingame physics i'm sure they could just take the base concept of "jump button mid-air to glide" and remove the other physics to them
Sonic Minecraft is charming, but very janky. Tedious too. The Switch port is very unreliable, i was gifted it and it was a very poor job. Sold it a week or two after. Takes forever to load and the settings with internet etc, is very poorly done. I have been ranting on about a port that has nothing to do with Sonic and Nick can clearly review it better than a guy in the comments, but it is a DLC to a janky port after all. Overall I think the DLC was a huge cash grab.
One of your trans fans here. I always hold my breath when a youtuber I like approaches the topic of transphobia, so I appreciate you being funny about it and making it seem like being an ally isn't even a big deal 💛 toot toot sonic warrior!
you know what wouldve been even better? if they stopped trying to make minecraft something that its not and just made a texture pack, map, and skin pack bundle.
@@drcheesenut896 you dont get it bro. cool things can be done with custom models, comand blocks, and behavior packs. but at what point is it just not minecraft anymore? If you have a skin pack and texture pack you can use that for anything, its creative. Ignoring minecraft's limitations and adding in whatever models in that you please, rather than building these things with the blocks given to you, is not creative.
I’m so sad that you can’t do anything with the choa garden! I feel like something like that would really fit well with Minecraft, and like you said, the styles are aesthetics are *super* different
I think the reason the Super Mario DLC was just a reskin was because it was included on the Wii U physical copy. The Wii U version is considered the Legacy Console Edition. I'm pretty sure they aren't the same version of Minecraft, so when Minecraft came to switch they simply ported the map and textures.
Notch actually made tweets against some of the more negative things he's said in the past, it's just that twitter doesn't show them to people because of the fact that those tweets don't get interacted with.
From my knowledge Notch has never said anything transphobic he just made a couple of ignorant tweets that people took out of context however after some talking with replys to said tweets he quickly learned from the experience and moved on However this is twitter and people seem to get a kick out of trying to hold other people down so to this day he still gets harassed over the incident.
It's more than the transphobia, he also straight up said he followed qanon and believes that IQ depends on race I wouldn't trust him especially since everybody heralds him as the sole creator of Minecraft and he gladly flashes that title
@@scr0ngle108 From what i've seen of Notch's documented conterversial tweets he's not transphobic or racist just ignorant of what offends people now-days , i'm less inclined to believe people who tell horror stories about Notch because users ( especially on twitter ) will try to witch-trial people they don't like for by making false claims about them or exagurating mistakes they've made in the past.
I went into this video knowing Nick's reactions from Twitter and expected to watch a very biased video of this DLC in a negative light. So I'm pleased to see that wasn't the case and Nick gave the PC version a shot as well. Great video man! Thanks for sticking with it to the end! Nice highlight of all 'The Hive' limited time content too!
At the beginning, you were a little harsh for someone who plays Minecraft so rarely. This doesn't discredit your points, but keep it in mind. That aside.. While I understand what both companies could want from making this, there's no good reason to. While the exposure and ease of access could help them in the long term, making a game like this has no good purpose. It's a worse version of a Sonic/Runner game with no elements of Minecraft present to justify the crossover. Frankly, one of the mechanics that stood out was the Lost World-esque speed system. The team was able to write in some fan service, but the core gameplay still suffers the mistakes of both franchises. The endless runner aspects do seem appealing, but there's still no reason for this and not some proper spinoff. Before watching, I didn't know about the server events. They still aren't well integrated, but the concept is much more appealing. I did not mean to be as negative as I was either, but still do not see a good (non-economic) reason for this to be made. The quote from Notch is understandable: I got this version of the game at 6.99, and under Microsoft the app became so focused on transactions the once independent-only, usually free mods are now in-house shovelware that costs more than the game itself (should).
Wtf man...did you really have to throw shade at notch? Just because the radical left want to call him a phobe doesn't make it true. Kinda frustrated you decided to call him a garbage person
Same, if you don't know someone and all you know about that person is that they don't respect a certain type of people why does it make them trash? I understand when trans people are frustrated but, is that really reason to try and cancel someone? and if the person being called out had done good things in the past, do all of that goes to the drain just because of their beliefs? I'm sorry, I don't think I understand the internet anymore...
@@ParanoidThalyyMVS can't people have beliefs that don't actually hurt anyone? An opinion even? ...I don't understand the internet either but it frustrates me that he had to throw shade like that
This was such a great Video! What I love about this channel is how your opinons on games aren't black and white, good or bad, and this highlights that.
9:23 knuckles is actually the best character of the bunch, his glide is actually a reused elytra. If you get to a high point, you can just fly over the stage! Pretty neat huh?
People always say they like Sonic just for speed, this is what they get Sonic is a platformer I don’t want him to just run without platforming or having fun
@@johnathonturner2279 It's mechanics are optimized for fast movement, but some people think you are supposed to constantly run forward and little else, which is why they get frustrated when that doesn't work and then claim Sonic games are "fundamentally flawed". You are actually supposed to not only be good at platforming, but exploit the momentum-based mechanics to gain as much speed as possible _while_ doing good platforming. Basically, speed is a reward you get for being good at the game, not something the game is supposed to hand over to you without putting any effort into it, which is how some people want to approach the games. That's what I mean when I say Sonic isn't all about speed.
@@inendlesspain4724 However, the main draw is still that Sonic is able to move a break neck speed. If the platforming cannot be overcome quickly, then the pace is dragged down and you are better off playing Mario or Crash. And before you bring up this whole "earning speed" shtick, bear in mind that most people aren't going to want to learn the mechanics to go fast if a first playthrough isn't satisfying. If people don't get that satisfaction of speed that was promised the first time, what would lead them to trying a second time? Frankly, since you're clearly shitting on the Boost games, I'd say it (specifically Generations) does a good job of conveying speed on the first playthrough that it does a good job of encouraging playing through the stages again and learning to use Sonic's moveset and learn the levels to get even better times.
@@johnathonturner2279 When I wrote that comment I was mostly thinking about the Genesis games since those are the games that layed the foundations for the rest of the series. Those games were supposed to be replayed multiple times to master the mechanics, that was something common with most games at the time and people understood that, and since it's been a thing with Sonic games since the beginning I consider it a fundamental trait of the series, and if other people have difficulty getting into the games because of that, sucks for them, but that doesn't make the games bad or flawed. If I was shitting on something, it was game critics and journos, who seem to want to just press right constantly and somehow expect the games to win themselves or something. And on that note, I know Doom fans were really angry at them when they were criticizing Eternal for being "unbalanced" when in reality the game was forcing the player to properly learn its mechanics to progress, but they refused to and then blamed the game for it. Just saying, if other communities don't accept people criticizing their favorite games for sucking at them because they don't want to properly learn their mechanics, why should we with Sonic games? I know some of the boost games have good level design that aren't based solely on boosting through everything, like Generations as you said and, even though I haven't played it myself yet, I've heard Unleashed also does that, I've even heard that it does it even better than Generations'. A good example of a game that exercises that "Sonic is supposed to be all about speed" philosophy I was talking about is, of course, Forces, which I think learnt the worst lessons from past boost games. For 2D Sonic there's Advance 2, which is often considered a sort of prototype of the boost formula. The boost games have their highs and lows, but I don't know why you just assumed I was shitting on the formula as a whole, even though I have to admit it's not my favorite type of Sonic game.
As I was watching you play through the Minecraft Chemical Plant Zone, I really started comparing this space with that of 'Sonic Robo Blast 2'. Nice to see you bring that fangame up.
Glad you got a chance to walk around the Hive's Silent Hill themed lobby. Quite an odd choice for a collab I must say but wacky crossovers are always welcome!
Notch isnt a bad guy, he simply just doesnt agree with your ideology, sadly you've been convinced that your ideas are the only way to be compassionate, its truly sad how narrow minded people like you are
First off, Game Apologist videos are back. Second, The Harry Potter video is finally coming. (I'm so excited about that one) Third, SAGE 2021 trailer will launch shortly. This is truly a good day.
Jesus, people still get wound up over Notch? He has a regressive opinion, oh no. Feeling "gross" because you're playing a game that was originally created by a man who says offensive things on Twitter nowadays is genuinely like- what the fuck-y. You don't feel gross wearing Nikes, but those are far more directly connected to far worse deeds than... well, depending on your perspective it's either being ignorant or having a mean opinion on a relative issue.
Don't play it on switch. I did. Had a bad bad time. The framerate drops so your frozen so much its almost unplayable. I did what the internet said and it didn't even fix it. Well I should've watched the vid before talking.
@@7liner That is literally the only negative of Java, and mods fix that so it basically runs just as well. Not to mention about 90% of computers run it just fine, it's older hardware that has the issues.
Notch is not transphobic, if i remember correctly, on a post that Notch made about how and why he made Minecraft animals genederless he said "take that! transphobes!" or something among these lines, the point is, yeah Notch did say some weird stuff but he is a chill guy.
@shadonic565 Ha-ha-ha, no. It's them, who sould stop being delusional, and their supporters, who should stop being cowards afraid of social retribution.
@shadonic565 Uh huh. Any actual arguments for trans "women" being actual women or you just gonna start and end on insults? Oh, right! There are no argument for that.
@shadonic565 Hey, I just wanna say this before I talk to you so you can understand my attitude towards the subject: I don’t agree with the whole transgender thing and it doesn’t really make sense to me. I was hoping you may be able to help me understand some of the main points since you seem pretty passionate about it. Again, I wanna be clear and open about this - I don’t agree with the concept of being transgender but that doesn’t mean they should be treated as if they’re subhuman. They should absolutely have the same rights as everyone else - all humans should be treated equally and fairly. If you could separate points into different paragraphs, I would appreciate it for ease of reading and understanding. I hope I’m not asking for too much, and thank you in advance. Also, I felt like editing this in because I felt bad about it, but I did notice you already basically did what I’m asking. It’s just that I’m really tired right now and I’d appreciate a less wall of texty kinda thing.
@shadonic565 Thanks for the advice, I suppose that should’ve been my first thought, huh? Sorry for making you have to write all that, but I really appreciate all your help and advice. I did have one friend in my secondary school a while back who was transgender, but we only ever talked about it once. She (changed to he) was very happy for me to discuss it with her in a healthy environment, but when your breaks only last for half an hour it’s hard to get the full story. Like you say, not all are the same, and she was happy for me to refer to her by her new name but still keep referring to her as female. I should start asking more people to get a wider sense of how people feel, so I’ll definitely start doing that. Again, I can’t thank you enough for everything - I hope I never came off as rude or transphobic when talking about this. As a straight white guy, I still always try and understand everyone’s views even when I don’t agree with them. Now I feel a lot closer to achieving that! Have a good day/night, and thanks for talking to me.
Those loop physics remind me of when SRB2 was just beginning to implement slopes. To be clear, Sonic Team Jr. made slopes work in a modified DOOM engine. Edit: I just got to the end of the video.
"Why can't I just enjoy things without the creators being complete garbage people?" Why does the personal opinion of an artist matter to you? It doesn't change the game, his alleged transphobia doesn't show up in it or anything. Why do you care?
Ok I nees to say this right now, if you want the full experience of minecraft sonic, play it on anything BUT phone or switch Also notch isn't transphobic, twitter is just being mean
Don't let this distract you from the fact bedrock edition worlds used to always get corrupted after like 3 weeks of play. It's been a 100% chance for years so it could probably still be around.
Minecraft bedrock is just awful. Like I would have been if they kept the 4J version of minecraft even with its own limitations. It felt like Minecraft built for Consoles while bedrock just feels like a mobile version slapped on consoles.
the thing about minecraft maps is that you'll always expect them to be kinda broken What amazes most people is how visually pleasing they look and the level os detail people put into these. some years ago, I'd never expect to see something like this This map is not really for hardcore sonic fans who want a fully polished game But for minecraft players who just happen to like sonic and wanna have fun Also yeah, your momentum stops if you stop pressing w while running that's just minecraft it's pretty much built around first person so uhhh how about you just move your mouse? or maybe not let go of W
Just from watching other people playing this on the switch, I can say, that EVEN AN IPHONE 7 RUNS THIS DLC BETTER Edit: Plus I think, that it would be way better, if the levels were 2d (one line and camera from side).
I played Sonic Minecraft on Xbox because, it worked much better. I would also recommend not using 3rd person pov, Minecraft isn't meant to really be played like that.
dude like 90% of these complaints DISSAPEAR when playing on pc... Why in the love of god did you expect this to control well on a console with a gamepad???? And you load chunks too much so obvs the switch version is literally ass...
While Minecraft isn’t dead, the sonic dlc is disappointing. The levels are the worst part for me since they are randomly generated and it is very samey. It would have been better with the levels being premade and not random, have more levels in general with bosses, and have an open world area like other Minecraft packs. Maybe more characters would be nice and obviously have the chao garden have more. I also wish it came with a usable texture pack, tho at least the skins are nice though a few of them need redesigned. An endless runner doesn’t end up working for this as it’s too repetitive with not enough content that helps mix it up. Even with the recent addition of Labyrinth zone it still doesn’t help.
The controls are tolerable if you've played Minecraft enough, but still only acceptable as a Minecraft overhaul. You _can_ do some neat stuff in the DLC, but you'll need a lot of very janky practice. It's a shame too, because I like the content ideas, but the execution is just too damn rocky. Also the Switch version is unbearable. More than three times, the Goal Ring failed to load in at the end of a really long string of acts.
Hey nothing wrong with sonic Hey nothing wrong with sonic dlc cause you're bad at the game okay you doesn't a multiple day help me some stock so help you easy just get some friends
Sonic is a great guy you need to appreciate him and take it in the Minecraft people work hard to make it to make sonic in Minecraft so give him a little love and do not say that sonic is bad again I hate you if you do that.
Here's a bit of a tip for playing minecraft, don't try to play the whole game in 3rd person, it's best in 1st person so you can see right in front of you
Y'know, it's not perfect. It's really not. But it's the first modern Sonic game I can say I particularly enjoyed since Generations, despite not even remotely being a Sonic game.
