@@RussShawTV Yep. Hot light and battery indicator came on. Pulled over and saw that it was in pieces. Luckily I had changed the water pump before so I knew how to get into that side of the engine, but I'm glad you showed the direction for the idler arm. I would have been trying to do it without taking the mount off the block otherwise.
Thanks for the demonstration and did a great job..but I feel going through the passenger side wheel well is a little more easier than the top like that. I just replaced my alternator on my 2012 Sonic and getting the belt off an on was much easier and fast and required less steps and taking things off.
I hate to be a booger but I have good news and bad news first off thanks for the video I have 52,000 on my 2013 RS and the belt looks ugly and needs to be changed your vid helped me get a idea of how to do it . Ok the bad news Chevy put out a letter to all Sonic 1.4 L owners the water pump leaking is a national with no time limit recall 😮.... it was due to a faulty designed gasket . A lot of people who bought their sonics used might not know this I know of three recalls for the Chevy Sonic the water pump leaking is 1 the failure of the valve cover PCV is 2 they will replace your faulty valve cover if your PCV fails , the third was the key time when you turn the car off with the door open and it doesn't go ding ding ding ding that's a MyLink upgrade.... For those who have already done it or who didn't know about it look into it you might save some money or some time .
Good morning I am a subscriber and I really enjoy the walk throughs on how to work on the sonic ... I too own a 2014 chevy sonic Rs 1.4 turbo and if you could be so kind to respond I would greatly appreciate it.. I saw a video to replace the serpentine belt in like 15 minutes ? They only loosened and removed the 1 bolt and 2 nuts on the outer part of the motor mount attached to the body after placing a Jack under the oil pan then cut off the old belt then jacked up the engine just enough to slide the belt under and over the mount that is still bolted to the engine and in the video it appears there is enough room to get to the tensioner bolt from underneath to easily replace the belt while moving the tensioner from underneath as they did this by turning the wheel all the way out and had it up on one side with jackstands and another Jack .. What do u think ? Thank you and God Bless you
5/8 on a 15mm is a little risky IMO. nice video though. Have to do this on mine tonight, all after a new turbo, valve cover, IM, and an oil change. Oh, and a cat delete.
Hey I'm gonna be replacing my alternator today, It looks like I have to go from underneath the car. But watching your video it looks like it's accesesable from the top. Do you have any suggestions?
Chris Kohls I guess depending on what year it is I may advise you to pay 50-60 bucks for diagnosis first, In many cases trying to diagnose especially electrical stuff takes a computer. Is it throwing up a code? Sometimes it could be something as simple as a software update. Yeah this car is like a smart phone or something. I but if it is the alternator and you know that for sure I’ve never done an alternator On this vehicle but it seems pretty easy, most of working on cars is just a process of removal and replacement. Make a video as you remove the alternator. See that way you remember how the part came out. That was the genesis of these RU-vid videos I do. I’ve been doing them for years used to do them on my old 8mm VHS camera so I wouldn’t forget how to put things back together once I pulled them apart. The biggest advice I could give you on this vehicle. After you fix it sell it! I blew the engine in mine at 150,000 miles catastrophic engine failure. A friend at the Chevy dealership who is a tech told me they have cooling problems. That’s why Chevy covers the water pump under the powertrain warranty because they’ve had so many problems with them. The 1.4 L turbo charge that I have gets really hot. And the technology to keep that engine cool isn’t very good. There a fun sporty looking little car but listen learn from my would’ve could’ve should’ve pain, I would sell that car while. You still can.
I’m trying to do this on my 2013 Sonic 1.4 I am not able to get the air intake piece off. I unscrewed everything and got the filter out but that piece isn’t pulling out as easily. Any advice?
I didn’t find it that hard but odds are I’ve been working on cars longer than you. You’re going to have to use some force. I suppose you could watch the water pump video I did for the same car. It’s in my channel on the Chevy Sonic playlist. In that video I remove the whole airbox as part of the procedure. It’s not that difficult and you can do it in a few minutes. It should at least help you get the filter out. I hope that helps 😁👍
So just replaced belt and smoked and chewed it out. I can't tell too clearly but I have a 2012 LTZ turbo and the bottom right pulley looks like it stops every now and then. Confusing me.
Help is it possible to get to the bolt on tensioner is you only remove outer bolt and 2 nuts on motor mount that bolts to the body and Jack it up and cut off old belt and slide new one under outer mount and put on new one from under the car saving time as I saw in a video it could be done is there enough clearance to get to tensioner bolt underneath with engine lifted with 2nd part of mount still bolted to the engine ? Help thank you and God bless you in Jesus name
L Edward Water pump failed and put extra stress on the belt. Water pumps feel a lot in these vehicles FYI warranty covers water pumps on them for 100,000 miles thanks to some bad engineering by GM.
Well I may just have do this to my daughter's 2013 Chevy Spark with a 1.2 L. Concept is the same but it actually has 2 separate belts with the alternator belt behind of course the A/C compressor. SMH
John Paradise there is no timing belt on this year of sonic. I don't think there is a timing belt on any of the sonic vehicles or Chevy Cruz post 2012 they all have timing chains. Serpentine belt drives the water pump alternator and air conditioner.
Shaw Family Videos, So, the 2013 Chevrolet Sonic LT 1.8 L does not have a timing belt, but a timing chain, As far as you know? I’m considering purchasing that vehicle.
Shaw Family Videos, Look at this maintenance schedule diagram: my.chevrolet.com/content/dam/gmownercenter/gmna/dynamic/manuals/2013/chevrolet/sonic/2013%20Chevrolet%20Sonic.pdf
Shaw Family Videos, Did you personally own a Chevy Sonic, and what specifically were the problems that you had? I still haven’t purchased one, but I was looking at one yesterday. I’m sorry to hear they have so many problems, because I was really considering getting the vehicle. It has 77,000 miles on it.
