Sonic Superstars Has a HUGE Problem

Reminder that a similar situation happened with crash bandicoot 4 where the game was listed to have in game purchases before launch but never had any, the in game purchases stuff refers to things like the modern Amy outfit and the Lego eggman skin which are free but you still have to technically buy them for £0.00/$0.00 which is technically an in-game purchase and again crash bandicoot 4 also gave you a skin for pre ordering the game, there are no micro transactions in this game or at the very least, it's extremely unlikely

It seems EA is starting to rub off on SEGA. I have a feeling that the in-game purchases message from the ESRB rating is just there because there’s more than likely going to be a digital deluxe version of Sonic Superstars. Or maybe a Plus Expansion in the near future. I don’t know. This is merely speculation.

I hope that the in game perchases are just game modes/some cosmetics it would be really bad if they locked characters behind a greedy pay wall.

I was waiting for something “bad” to happen with Superstars. I feel like every time a “too good to be true” sonic game comes out there’s always some sort of downside. However, the solution is simple, don’t repeat what has already happened. Sega doesn’t want to own up to their actions for whatever reason so they’re gonna keep pumping out mediocre shit. I am a fan of sonic but I will paying the bare minimum to have as much fun as I can.

Classic Boom Sonic skin would be cool, plus Sonic Boom Fire & Ice is kind of like Superstars, just different play styles & Superstars higher budget lol.

I really hope Sonic Superstars goes the same route as Sonic Frontiers I don’t wanna pay money on something I could get for free.

Just because they put it in, does not mean they will have them. Companies will have this added regardless if they actually plan on having paid content. They have to say they will in order to do it in future, so they are just not closing themselves off.

We actually have the release date(maybe...). Multiple retailers have listed Sonic Superstars with the release date of October 17th.

I think they are doing this because of the Sonic Movies.

I wouldn't be surprised if they shadowdrop this game with how they did not give us a date. 1:02 Ok, but like...DLC are often counted as Microtransactions for these kinds of notes, to the point where some people think they are the same thing.(Which they are not btw. In the spectrum of a "major transaction" being a full game and "micro transactions" being some sort of boost or cosmetic to your savefile, DLC could basically be called "mini/minor transactions", but are much more aligned with the side of the spectum the full game is on because they are permenent. Even making a new savefile does not get rid of it, the only way to permanently lose DLC is to have it uninstalled at the same time the dataserver get rekt, which basically never happens in the lifetime of your experience with the game.) 1:49 Incorrecterino. The most major DLC the series ever had was in Unleashed(It is so major infact that the modern Sonic Rooftop Run-stage in Gens is partially based on one of these DLC-stages) and I am pretty sure those packs were all paid, even tho some of them were not even that great. Also Mania. Also 06 having had the first modern DLC in the series(SA games had DLC, but DLCs as a concept worked waaaaay diffrent back in the Dreamcast-days) and paid to boot.

I think it’s important at this point to have realistic expectations, while still being optimistic. If there are skin micro transactions that would really suck, especially in a game you are paying A FULL $60 FOR. But you never know what these in game purchases are. Maybe it’ll be fine or maybe it’ll be awful. I’m gonna remain hopeful it’s not full on micro transactions for skins but I won’t be surprised if there are.

It's almost certain that it would be just cosmetic, so i don't see any problems with that. And it's possible that microtransactions will just make getting skins faster, but you still will be able to unlock them by grinding

Imagine if it's skins but you can unlock them in the game but it would take a while or you could pay and get it much quicker.

Any game that has DLC says it has in game purchases. Even if its just for the modern Amy costume.

I doubt that an item shop will be in superstars, SEGA is just not the company to do this, especially when its and E for everyone game which little kids will be playing. And an item shop in a sonic game is odd, I dont think a Fortnite battlepass and item shop fits, so its a slim chance they do this

We have more information now. There is an in game collectible that you can find in levels, and in the skin shop we can spend this collectible to buy skins so it's perfectly fine

Just wanna say this: I think these in game purchases will be for Sonic Superstars Online Battle mode. Perhaps it will be used for skins. Since the mode will be 8-player, there will likely be an emphasis on it

I'm 99% sure that the in-game purchases will NOT be micro-transactions, the same happened to marvels spider man 2 ps5 and in reality it was just the deluxe version, so i'm pretty sure it's the same story here. But hey who knows, this is sega we're talking about.

In game purchases doesn’t immediately mean you need to pay money for it. If they add something for free it’s still technically a purchase, but just for 0 dollars. So being so quick to assume micro transactions is a little much, especially considering sega has never done anything like an item shop or anything like that.

Honestly I don't mind if Sonic Superstars has in game purchases in the form of cosmetic skins. At least it's not a pay to win thing. And actually with it being an exclusively offline game (no online multiplayer) that makes the purchasing of skins completely optional. I get that not everyone wants to pay money for their cosmetics in a game, but in my opinion, as long as you have a job, you're making money, and having that one skin that you're saving up for just gives you an extra little something to look forward to with the next paycheck outside of simply just making it by. If the skins are a decent price like $5 per then it's simply a nice little something to add into one's budget and the thought of that gives me nostalgia of the days when I was little and I'd have to make plans with my mom to work small micro transactions into our budget and the anticipation that came with excitedly waiting for the week that we would finally have the money get that small little cosmetic I wanted for the game that I liked playing. It really brings me back, and I look forwards to seeing what skins will be available on the in game shop for me to work into my budget. ^w^

mario party superstars had the same thing on its esrb rating, and it was just for nintendo switch online, so i’m hoping that it’s just needing to buy your console’s online service to use the battle mode

One day I looked at all of my switch boxes and noticed that the “in-game purchases” label is very confusing. I have multiple games that say they have in-game purchases when they actually don’t. My boxes for Mario Party Superstars (same subtitle lol), Switch Sports, and Mario Strikers: Battle League say the game has in-game purchases, even though there isn’t a single area where you have to spend real money. Mario Strikers and Mario Party both have in-game currency that can be spent, but not Switch Sports. Also if the “in-game purchases” label means that the game has in-game currency, that wouldn’t make any sense because who would care about if a game has in-game currency and also because Mario Odyssey, WarioWare (I think) and Yoshi’s Crafted World have in-game currency and they don’t have the “in-game purchases” label. Also Sonic Colors Ultimate doesn’t have the label even though you said there are in-game purchases. Maybe the information is more accurate in the website, but it wouldn’t explain why games without in-game purchases have the label. Also, I feel like more people would look at the box for information like that than the website. The website could probably be updated at any time though, unlike the boxes. Maybe some of my game boxes are outdated or something, I don’t know. Basically what I’m saying is that maybe there aren’t in-game purchases in the game, since the “in-game purchases” label is very inconsistent, but don’t count on it. Sorry for the long comment, and sorry if this is confusing.

Honestly this is such an inconclusive video. The term "in-game purchases" is generally made as a broad statement and can mean many things. Having in-game currency (not mtx) to purchase something can even be considered an "in-game purchase", considering you are STILL making a transaction in the game. Dlcs also counts as an in-game purchase if its done in-game. I dont really understand why people have to be so quick to assume the worst case scenario here, especially as speculative as a vague term.

I think it will most likely be that there’s a currency to unlock skins that get for just playing the game but if you don’t wanna play then you can just buy the currency a lot of games do this xenoverse 2 for example has tp medals you can get completely for free but there’s an option to buy them now no one in their right mind would but it’s there

Microtransactions just won't sell in a game that lacks a co-op focus, with mobile games, Fortnite, Fall Guys, and Stumble Guys being great examples. And it seems backhanded to do this in a smaller game like Superstars, yet Sonic Frontiers which was stuffed with content has free DLC. It makes more sense from a business standpoint if they had charged $5 for the Frontiers DLC or depending what all we get in the final wave, $10 at most, and cosmetic skins in Superstars being bundled in sets as DLC for prices based on their theme. They could add as much DLC as they want with no complaints from the community, we'll even pay for it, we just don't want in microtransaction format buying one skin at a time for what is likely inflated costs

Well that's a dumb conclusion. This is a 2D platformer, not an online competitive shooter. SEGA's not going to make you pay for powerups or skins like that. That just wouldn't make sense in the context of a platformer you play offline. If there is DLC, I can guarantee it'll be much more significant.

I don't get why people like this game fr. 1. It kinda came out of nowhere 2. It really gives off cash grab vibes 3.It doesn't have the same spark sonic mania did. 4. The way they treated the sonic mania developers was so mid that they quit (it was something around the lines of that) 5. Its a 2D sonic game with 12 stages( 2 acts per stage) and i don't think 2 hours of content is worth $60-$70 dollars 6. We aren't even getting a special animation for this game and team sonic racing got that You're honestly better off buying the new Mario wonder game which is around the same price im pretty sure $60-$70

i have an theory, basically like Sonic Origins and Sonic Frontiers, the game will have denuvo which you need to pay over 140000 euros to put in your game so SEGA wants to recover the money putting in-game micro transactions, this may also be the reason to Sonic Origins being extremly overpriced

As long as SEGA gives us more content, I don't care if they charge for the dlc, let the company earn their money. At least I don't have to depend on the PC side community to make free dlc for the game, which btw, not everyone is a PC gamer, including myself. And the dlc is optional for cosmetics things, you don't have to pay for it if you're fine with the standard version of the game.
