I don't know the context of what Ian Flynn said, but I definitely agree that Sonic is not kid oriented. Its always been at its best when it was shonen or (for a more Western approach) similar to other franchises like Marvel and Star Wars, of which Ian Flynn has stated himself in one of his recent Bumblekasts. Those franchises are the epitome of family entertainment; kids know them and love them and they do have their own kid-friendly shows, but their core movies keep the adult audience engaged through good writing, relatable themes, and well-balanced tones (with a few exceptions, of course). I believe Sonic is just as capable of doing that, just look at the movies and Rebound.
Congrats on the Sonic Rebound anniversary dude. And Ian Flynn take is a little weird considering he was there during the Archie era of Sonic where things were wild 😅. But he may have misquoted too 🤷♂️
Sonic Frontiers is not an adult game by any sort of imagination, nor was Sonic Adventure, Adventure 2 and Unleashed. Sonic Colors and Sonic Lost World didn't have trash stories because they were for kids, their stories were trash period. Sonic Prime is for kids, but it's miles better than Sonic Lost World's story. Other thing is when people complain about comedy, saying Sonic Colors and Sonic Lost World stories are bad because they are comedy. That is not true, they are bad for comedy stories, too, they are bad in general. The jokes are not fun. The problem is not the tone, the problem is not the age of the target demographics, the problem is that their stories are bad. Period
yeah I agree, I would say Sonic's tone is around that if something like Lego Ninjago, which while it can get heavy is obviously still made for kids. I don't get why people think that it being kid oriented is some sort of sin.
People really took that Ian Flynn clip and ran with it. The question was asking about sonic killing and why isn’t that stuff explored. They chopped a piece of that out and everyone went wild 😭
Which is why I think GamerGuyd got mislead here, because of the stripped context, and ultimately why I find Spidey_Need Muddy's response be a strawman and in bad faith. Ian never suggested that the _Sonic_ franchise can't explore complex and harrowing themes at all; he was saying that to not expect the series to go above introductory level into heavy subject matter that it does explore, and as far as I can tell. . .that has always been the case since the franchise properly jumped to the 3rd dimension since _Sonic Adventure_ , if we're strictly talking about the video games. Let's also clear up the fact that "kids" is a broad term. "Kids" can refer to both children and teenagers. _Sonic_ being a kids franchise isn't really that far off from the truth when you really think about it. But of course, it also good for all ages do to the fact that it has elements that adults like us can enjoy, hence why the franchise will logically not go balls deep when showcasing more intricate topics.
@@johnr.deluca4258 But teenagers are not kids... There's a difference. Also during the adventure era and the dark era, sonic was inspired to be shonen. Which is gear for older kids and teenagers.
12:30 Finally, someone who gets it. It always irritates me when people say that Sonic is a kids franchise when that's not the case. For example, people say 'Shrek' is a kids' movie when it's actually a family movie, a movie made for everyone. The same applies to Sonic, who is a FAMILY franchise like you said, not a KIDS franchise.
when people get irritated over that it usually screams insecurity fact of the matter is this is a kids franchise just because it has an adult fan base and tackle certain topics/story elements doesn’t mean it not a kid franchise
@@Kingmationproductionz It's a franchise for everyone. Even some of the games are rated E for everyone. It's not just a children franchise. He even showed proof that Sonic Frontiers was targeted to teenagers and adult audiences? Weren't you paying attention?
I hope they put all the videogames of lego Sonic the hedgehog with all characters all sagas characters like Sonic tv shows on PlayStation 5 on the next year of 2024
sonic has always had children as the target demo, but the series has always tried to appeal to everyone of all ages, you had things like satam, the adventure games and even ian worked on archie, and idw before writing for the games
While I like Ian Flynn and a huge fan of his works, but I disagree with him saying "Go read adult material," Sonic has been targeted to Everyone 6 - 11 who discovered the series and 12 to to mid 40s and early 50s (mostly because of Nostalgia ties to the series ether with Sonic the Hedgehog 1, Sonic Adventure 1 and/or Sonic Colors,) now I don't want the series to have a tone like Final Fantasy or Neon Genesis Evangelion and that Classic Sonic (Sonic 1 though Sonic Superstars) should have the same tone as OG Dragon Ball and Modern Sonic (Sonic Adventure 1 though Sonic Frontiers) same tone as Dragon Ball Z. Speaking of look at the Dragon Ball series, OG Dragon Ball while light hearted and made for everyone, had adult themes in it, saying Sonic for Kids is like saying Dragon Ball is for kids hell shows and movies targeted to children tackle adult issues like Death I.E The Lion King but The Lion King can be enjoyed by adults aswell because it's Family Friendly, in short before Shadow the Hedgehog the game, the Sonic series can be enjoyed by kids age 6 to 11, Adolescent age 12 though 19 and Adults age 20 to above, Like Mario, Mickey Mouse and Bugs Bunny, Sonic is made for everyone
8:10 keep in mind, the level could be much shorter depending on your skill level, and we dont know how good at the game the guy was, 9 minutes went be accurate for probably most people
I agree with the target age audience, I don't like Sonic as a kids only thing, I prefer all ages, this is kinda the same thing with Power Rangers being a kids thing.
Well, if Sega won't let me play as Silver and Blaze in the modern games, they might as continue making more classic themed Sonic games, cus the less I hear Roger voicing Sonic, the better I guess.
About that Ian comment, I don't know the context, but he's either talking about Sonic itself since he's a hero or explicit deaths, because you can talk about death in Sonic without making it out of place (the ancients, the echidnas, Gamma, Metal Sonic in the OVA, Shadow, Maria, Gerald) So, his comment is either out of context, or he just worded that really badly
If the meta era never existed then sonic would have never been a target for the kids,Sonic prime and the movies a based on sonic meta era characters and stories and sonic haven’t been shonen in a long time ,And frontiers wasn’t perfect but it’s a good direction Sonic just a good balance in Japan and America in my opinion,Because both target audiences are important and bring a ton of money .
how many ppl you think chaos killed. apparently sonics intended audience wouldnt even know who that is. i dont think ian really thought his statement out
14:46 funny thing is Bluey tackled way more mature themes than the sonic franchise in it’s entirety so he kind of loses his point second and Flynn is valid. If you’re not satisfied with the direction of a children’s franchise, then don’t engage in it that’s what I did with Pokémon and so many other things I used to be into
So Gamerdguy7aces, so when you going to talk about how Christian Whitehead and the Sonic Mania team basically disproven the rumor that Sonic Mania 2 was cancelled due to payment disputes? I remember you mentioning that in one of your previous videos a while back. Turns out that was a load of bullshit 🤔
Sonic is for kids and people who use to be kids. Sure, Ian can argue that sonic is for kids, well guess what, I use to be kid and still like sonic. So yes, maybe of majority of fans are a younger audience, but most fans you hear about more are the og fans or older fans who just got started.
Full price for 8 zones... Yo they are going to justify it by meaningless shit like a pointless hub world and costumization bs... I can feel the dissappointment already
