That spoof commercial is quite a bit unfair. Sonic did kind of lose it as time went by, but I don't think that was predestined. The series did improve a bit with Sonic Adventure 2, and the Dreamcast itself was actually a very advanced console, pioneering many modern traditions like Internet functionality.

Rouge the bat. Her name is pronounced "rewzh". It's French for red.

There was only six emeralds in Sonic 1. From Sonic 2 onwards, its seven emeralds to mirror the seven dragonballs used for a super saiyan transformation. (In which Super Sonic is based on.) Yuji Naka was a massive fan of Dragonball.
