v0.02 is the earliest known early prototype of Sonic CD for the Sega CD. The build is dated December 4th, 1992, predating the previously discovered 510 prototype, and was created so the game could be shown at the Japanese Yuusei Sega World event that year.
Many things haven't been implemented, or are in a buggy state. Only Palmtree Panic Acts 1 and 2 are present on the disc (which sucks, because this is the only known prototype that contains the infamous "R2" in the Time Attack screen). It was dumped by drx on October 26th, 2019 as part of Sonic Month.

@Maycon Cruz: I seriously hope we'll get to see R2 in some form or another in the next dump release. I'm also hoping that one of these Sonic CD prototype releases has the Sonic 1-style special stages in it that were only seen in video game magazines of the early '90s (circa 1992-1993) while Sonic CD was still in production.

They didn’t replace it. They just made the final version run at a lower bitrate and compressed it in a different format. Probably to save disc space.

They also cut a 2-player coop mode from the game, though it was likely due to bugs and performance issues + no Tails or Amy due to the timeline placement.

So what have we learned from this? Sonic once had no Spring Twirl when bouncing off a spring or Peelout animation Palmtree Panic Past had an entirely different pallete and different music The time travel cutscene didn't have a light green background back then YOU SAY! In this proto the past theme for the stage is CD audio and in all the other protos it is PCM audio so it’s the same track just a different format

I was wondering when you would post this! I really like certain things about this prototype, such as Palmtree Panic Past having a CD audio track and some of the altered level layouts. I'm not really all that crazy about the name "Salad Plains" though. Nonetheless, an interesting prototype. Thanks for uploading!

Sometime they are found at thrift shops or some other obscure places. I think one of the early sonic extreme demos was found at some obscure place.

I think it’s meant to be a Japanese pun. Heisei was the period in which the game was released, which went from 1990 to 2019 (the current period is Reiwa, and the period that lasted until 1989 was Showa), so many things in the heisei (pronounced hey-say) period used that pun. The You Say! sign might’ve been a joke referring to the future period being Yuusei instead of Heisei.

Thanks Drx for found this alpha build of Sonic CD. R2 is in this prototype. I hope he found Sonic 1 Beta and Sonic 2 Beta. Sonic 2 Beta with lost zone Genocide City Zone and Dust Hill Zone.

All of the songs just feel different. I know the past song is different but the others feel different, too. Not only that but the game ITSELF just sorta feels different, too! The graphics seem brighter...This is super interesting!

Honestly, i like Salad Plain more than Palmtree Panic (except for the name): -More consistent backgrounds between Past, Present and Bad Future -Better Past Music -Actual loops the final version didn't have. -While the background might make it look more reminiscent of Green Hill, i still think it looks visually better.

I downloaded this prototype to try it on my emulator, but when I got it to run, it showed a black screen with the PIONEER logo at the top and at the bottom , it showed three buttons , a cd open button , an ld open button and a play button with a cursor over it . What does that mean?

The transitions in this beta are much better than the final version IMO. They flow into the following music instead of stopping like in the final version.

@TYE HISER Don't worry; the company would probably do an awful job at explaining it to you. The fandom does it better, so you might as well check out the wikis. I'm using Petit Computer: I prefer using QR Codes instead of letting SmileBASIC delete my creation whenever it feels like it. Petit Computer also saves a lot of battery on my console. Nintendo 3DS, yay.

Probably not, and if there is, it's long gone. The only reason we even managed to get 0.02 was because it was publicly shown off in an event, so there would possibly be more copies of it made in case of something happening or it would've been given to a developer of the build, the "inbetween" builds that weren't shown in magazines will be the hardest to find and are likely lost
