Nevaltion I love the dark brotherhood! Im more forgiving to its bad sides because of how from what I heard the game was forced to be rushed out due to something that happened during development. Like apparently some of the more bad sounding songs were actually placeholders for the actual tracks but due to it getting rushed out, they diddnt have time to replace them... Thats why if it wasnt due to the Ken Penders thing, I would have loved to see them remake the game...
This game features a character named Shade the Echidna, who is part of the Nocturnus Clan, which is connected to the American Sonic continuity, which Conner still hasn't gotten too yet.
The reason there was never a sequel to the game was it was sued over 10 times by Ken Penders, claiming they 'stole his characters' for the Echidna race in the game and for ripping off his Dark Legion story he used in the Sonic Archie series. he lost the suit all 10 times, but if they ever made a sequel he could try to sue them again over it.
Soni-Chan x Soniku Even if they just made it a Action-RPG like the Tales of Symphonia series it would work well. I already felt the Tales of feelings with Kirby Clash Deluxe.
PacStar127 it was really fun. It just needs a convoluted story with Anime stereotypes! Nani? Kirby has a long lost brother? And he's EVIL?! DUN DUN DUNNNNN
They need to take this Sonic RPG game and throw it into the Flame of Rebirth so it can evolve into a better game than its embarrassing incarnation......
Actually, the reason there was never a "next time" is equal parts agravating and tragic. Simply put, the Dark Brotherhood in the game took a lot of elements from what is known as the Dark Leigon from the Archie comics. The creator of the Leigon (who we shall call Greedy Dipshit) decided that was the final straw and sued SEGA, Archie AND EA (as Bioware made the game) to get control of his characters for profit purposes. The result was that Archie rebooted the comic and jettisoned every single character that Greedy Dipshit made, while SEGA began piling on mandate after mandate to make damn sure that this sort of thing would never happen again. Which...it did, by the way, which was kind of what killed the Archie Comics iteration. So, uh...yeah. This game was the catalyst for a massive shakedown of the Sonic franchise that restricted everything. It's been Green Hill and a sense of terrified coddling for years now. SEGA doesn't want to do anything risky with Sonic anymore. And this short, ugly, cheaply made game is why.
Honestly, I'd say that this game did more damage to the franchise than 06 did, all because of Penders. And yes, I mean that seriously. At least 06 didn't kill off another fragment of the franchise along with it. 06 sent SEGA reeling, but the lawsuit and Penders? That left them running scared. It's why everything has been so simple and patronising. Risk-free. ...Frankly hopeless.
So this is what I'm getting from this: -Greedy person sues (3) companies over one tiny thing that they didn't want to come to a compromise -All of the greedy person's characters are removed from those things the (3) companies made -Sequel to The Dark Brotherhood is never released due to this
@@kakbak3766 Know this is old, but Penders isn't the one who started that lawsuit, Archie was. Ken was trying to get royalties for his characters, but instead Archie gave him a cease and desist, claiming he'd signed a contract handing said characters over. Ken counter-claimed he never did, and Archie never produced the paperwork proving their statement, no one had signed any contracts with them prior to the debacle. Along with this, Archie didn't have the money to purchase them, and Sega of Japan's bias basically meant that no one in the American branch could do so either, so they just booted them from the comic. Archie's worst offense in this is that it's basically poor management all over this: money, legalities, even relations were poorly managed (albeit, that last one is on Sega of Japan, they just don't understand the importance of keeping your company cooperative internationally).
If Sega ever tries again with giving Sonic an RPG game, I have two suggestions: 1. Tails, Knuckles, and Amy The game starts off as normal with Sonic battling Eggman. However, he summons Tails, Knuckles, and Amy for help when Eggman captures him. Tails, Knuckles, and Amy manage to free Sonic, but suddenly, a huge demon emerges, grabs Sonic, and disappears into a portal to another dimension. Tails, Knuckles, and Amy follow the demon into the portal. They then meet three dying sorcerers who offer their cloaks to them and entrust them with delivering the cloaks to their heirs. Tails, Knuckles, and Amy decide to wear the cloaks until they find the rightful heirs. Upon wearing the cloaks, they discover the cloaks grant them powers. Tails, Knuckles, and Amy must now journey through the new dimension and, with help from several other characters in the Sonic franchise and some new characters, they must defeat the demon, rescue Sonic, and save the new dimension as well as their own before it's too late. 2. Silver and Blaze In this game, we learn the origins of Silver and Blaze's powers. We also learn Silver and Blaze are part of a rebel group that does battle against a tyrannical ruler. When the ruler travels back in time to set off an event that would doom the rebel group's efforts, Silver and Blaze attempt to stop him. Both of these games would feature Anime or Anime inspired animation for the cutscene animation and use the same animation used for the Sonic Advanced Trilogy for the gameplay animation.
7:50 No, no, no. Pir'oth Ix isn't "just some robot thing", Connor; he's the leader of the Nocturnus Clan, a tribe of Echindas that had been sealed away in the Twilight Cage since ancient times. They were basically the reason why Tikal's father, Chief Pachacamac, attacked the Emerald Shrine where the Chao lived, thus unleashing Perfect Chaos the first time around and leading to the creation of Angel Island; they're also the creators of the Gizoids, which is how we got Emerl in _Sonic Battle_ who eventually became Gemerl in _Sonic Advance 3._ This game has a lot of lore and world-building in it that fans like myself enjoy, and Procurator Shade is one of my favorite female characters in the series; it's such a shame that it had to come in such a mediocre package, and in the midst of the "Dark Age of Sonic" no less. I mean, this was made by freaking _Bioware_ of all people, as in the people who made _Mass Effect, Knights of the Old Republic,_ and _Baldur's Gate;_ this company had made some of the best RPGs out there, and yet none of that experience shows in _Sonic Chronicles._ I don't know if it was just because it was being made on the DS or if they just didn't care, but this game has so much potential that the developers simply didn't capitalize on... Alas, we may never get that Part 2 that was teased a decade ago. Not only were sales poor due to both the mediocre game itself and it being a Sonic game during the Dark Age, but also there were legal issues that sprang up from this game: you see, a lot of the stuff surrounding the Nocturnus Clan seemed to have been inspired by content from the Sonic the Hedgehog comics published by Archie Comics, so much so that Ken Penders (the writer of the Archie Sonic comics those concepts came from) felt the need to sue SEGA for apparently stealing his ideas; long story short, the Archie Comics series had to completely reboot to remove any original characters that he and other writers had created (which eventually ended up killing the Archie Comics run entirely), and now _Chronicles_ is doomed to remain forgotten, its story unfinished and its potential sequel killed off before it could even get a chance to redeem its predecessor.
I like Fire Emblem (sometimes there's like "shipping simulator" but hey not my kind) it's a strategy RPG made by Nintendo. Conner do a video about this game okease
Expecting RPGs to always be about epic anime plots and combat, is like expecting every Pizza to be Pepperoni. JRPGs are just one color of the spectrum of RPG. You expected Sonic Chronicles to be like JRPG, but it's more like CRPG. Like a Bioware Dialogue-heavy RPG. And it's not bad... in fact, if you consider Dialogue-Heavy RPG to be bad, then it's like you love only Pepperoni flavor of Pizza and you consider all other flavors of Pizza to be bad, because it's not Pepperoni. Dialogue-Heavy RPG is a part of the spectrum. And there lots of hardcore old-school RPG fans who love this stuff.
Ix is NOT some robot thing. He's an echidna whose clan was trapped inside an alternate dimension. He has spent years ruling the dimension with an iron fist and building up forces for his plan of invading the world and conquering it.
I had some memorys of play this game. However I got stuck on some level and never finish. The only thing that people remember it for is the character Shade. Also that flash game at the start was sonic rpg a game I played a lot when I was younger! ^^;
I L-O-V-E this game. This WAS the first game I ever played and the first Sonic game I ever ( and have ever ) played so it will always have a special place in my heart.
This game has a special place in my heart, i was in a level 5 lockdown facility when this game dropped. They let us have our handhelds at specific times to see if it had any therapeutic effects and this is one of the few games i had and it kept going. I know its panned and the criticism is fair, but i really do love this game and will always look at it fondly. This game and Dragonball Origins were my lifeline in that hell.
OMG I remember when a younger me looked forward to this game!!! Nowadays, I can't play more than half the game on a lazy afternoon. I guess I'm kinda good at it....???? It was an interesting experiment, but I think I'm better off playing tales of symphonia for the first time....... .
Sonic Unleashed, with the RPG elements on the Werehog, was a better Sonic RPG than Dark Brotherhood. In fact, any second attempt at a Sonic RPG NEEDS to be an action RPG like Tales or Final Fantasy XV. *sigh* I'm gonna go play Berseria instead.
Fun fact: This is the first Sonic game I ever played, I stuck like after a couple minutes into the game because at the time I always spamming the A button to skip the dialogue. I remembered the music, at the time I playing it, I don't know what quality music is, so I ignore it because it's started to be boring
Can we at least acknowledge this is the best Knuckles has been since the Adventure games? I get he's all about punching things, but without the Master Emerald, when punching is really ALL he is, he's not interesting at all.
:O Omgersh! I remember this game, I played it like twice when I was a bit younger. I have a bit of a soft spot for it tbh, but I'm totally aware that it's not very good.. I hope it gets a reboot that doesn't suck someday. Thank you for making an video on this, you're the best! :3
Whoa, I didn't think anyone would actually talk about this game. I really like the story, even if the controls are a bit hokey. This is one of my favorite Sonic games, to be honest
I really liked this game as a kid. When I heard BioWare was the one that made this, I was quite excited. Like, the makers of my favorite Star Wars game?? How could I not be amazed? (Anthem than happened) ... Man those were some really nostalgic times back then. I still kinda like Sonic Chronicles, it is one of the more involved turnbased RPGs I've played. Let's be real, though, the earlier Paper Mario games are definitely superior. Even as a kid, the music was something I really didn't like and I'm someone who kinda enjoyed Shadow the Hedgehog. One of my favorite aspects of any RPG is character building, and even though it is a lot more simplistic than something like Knights of the Old Republic, strangely the Chao mechanic did add a bit of a variety of advantages. And I'm honestly kinda amused by how the character equipment consists of gloves and shoes. All in all, I wouldn't be against another RPG being made for Sonic the Hedgehog. Or at least a Sonic game that has RPG elements like good character growth. We could get someone like Atlus or Media.Vision to develop it for the new generation. Give it some humor akin to Final Fantasy Sonic X6 and I can kinda get behind it. And while this game wasn't quite the Sonic RPG fans were hoping for, that doesn't mean nothing more can be done for the concept. Fans upon fans have made some Sonic games on RPG Maker, so there's some clear demand for a better game in that format. I think it's time for a quirky, fun and high budget Sonic RPG. Or maybe a better version of Sonic and the Black Knight. I'm probably alone on that last aspect... Till then, it's back to Fire Emblem Three Houses with me. Man, who would have thought being a teacher could be so much fun?
I think what could have save the game was if they 1: minimize the conversation in the game and 2: do you know how a Sonic forces they had a bar on the top left and a character may be small quotes and it didn't interrupt you were playing the game!
I had this game back in the day and I thought it was OK at the time but it could have been so much better if Bioware had put more time in it. Also, I had to laugh out at the human Goofy comment. Good job!
Sonic Chronicles actually was my first DS game, and I really liked it. (Played it like three times, still missing one goddamn Chao) Btw, who else remembers those Sonic RPG Flash Games? Good old times...
This is one of the first video games I played on my ds and everything is so nostalgic I forgot this game and the attack menu icons etc. send a chill down my spine... Why did it have to be this game
Honestly this game gave Sonic the lore this series really needed. We haven't really gotten lore since the adventure games. This game gave more information on what happen to Knuckles ancestors and for that I can appreciate it. Yes I think ut shouldn't have focus on using touch-screen gameplay and it could have had better music. Other than that it was a solid game.
I actually enjoy playing the game, maybe because almost all the rpg that i played in that time have a really long talk everytime so i didn't notice that like a problem, the history can be better and the world gameplay need to be polish, but hey, is a sonic rpg, at least is something
I was never able to beat the first boss because of a game breaking glitch that treated this boss like the final one. It instantly killed my entire team with a total of 9870 damage and then made me restart from the beginning... The reason for this... CORRUPTED SAVE FILES!
Haven't played a tales games since TOD remake on PS2. I'm more of an action gamer, mega man and such. However I do like tales series, probably it's time to go back to this series.
Massive Tales fan? I gotta admit, I like you a loooot more now. I mean I enjoyed your content before but damn now I've got an ulterior reason to stick around!
Wait... Having a Charmander use Roar early game? Tackle too?? I think you meant Growl, 'cause Charmander can't use Roar through Lv Up and all it does is end the wild battle/make the trainer swap Pokémon. Growl lowers the opponent's Attack stat by one stage and Charmander and hatched knowing the move. Same thing for Tackle, as Charmander don't learn it. It instead uses Scratch, an identical move.
You forgot to say we can choose the answer of Sonic so it can impact the gameplay! Like a boss you could fight or not, character that will come with you or not and some story/character development in parallel with the main story! AND THE CHAOS! YOU CAN FOUND CHAOS AND USE THEM FOR YOUR STAT! They are so adorable and got cool design in this game. But the limited amount of rings is a stupid problem.
You can switch the controls to the D-pad you know. I have it and yes it is slow paced but I personally love slow paced games. And it's not too plot heavy. There's alot of dialogue and the end credits are presented as dialogue. And the spoiler that Conner the Waffle didn't mention is that Knuckles isn't the last echidna. There's a female echidna and some banished echidna's and the female one is orange and named Shade. And the evil echidna looks like the rat wizard thing from the Bluth movie Secret of NIMH. It was weird but I liked it. Also Tails Sky Patrol is an RPG. Just thought I'd let you know that there's another better RPG.
Hey!I love rpgs.Totally in the mood to talk about em.I just picked up Octopath Traveler, too.Great game.27/10 *"I don't know how to rate things..."* -ConnerTheWaffle
I actually loved playing Chronicles, I seriously had fun with this when I was a kid. (Although I couldn't read English at that point, so I just skipped through the whole game)
Finally, someone talked about this game! I loved this game so much, but I wish they cold make a new one at some time. Probably not likely, but I would like to see it happen
You decribed it spot on. I had for the DS it started out great then it was a chore just to finish it. It was more dialogue than game play. Yes, I hated the ending. Traded it as soon as I was done.
