I'm glad I'm not the only one who thought chip was underrated. I actually really like him and I think he is the best sonic companion. Blaze is also pretty underrated.
@Obama Bin Laden Fans theorize he's a chihuahua, but I don't know if it's been confirmed. I think it's because Knuckles' heritage is heavily based on Mayan culture, although I think chihuahua's are mostly associated from Aztec culture, as they are known as warriors according to a dog movie for kids that was made by Disney, but Mayan culture seems very similar. I've also heard people say he's a chinchilla or guinea pig.
I started playing Unleashed for the first time around a week ago. Only in the past year have I really gotten into Sonic. I played a few as a kid (around when Heroes came out) But playing Unleashed, I kinda really liked the character of Chip. I don't know why but something about his development really sat with me. After playing it, I really dont get why people hated unleashed. I found it kinda fun. The werehog sections were not all that bad.
Chip is one of my favorite characters, I always wanted him to come back some how. Fans think if Chip comes back that would mean the Werehog, which I say, “Says Who?” Chip has a fun personality and a good friend to Sonic.
I loved Chip. I loved his story. That cutscene on the Pier where chip was explaining all nod his memories and jobs to Sonic, is just amazing. His character towards the end of the game really impressed me, and him getting sealed into the earth with Dark Gia got me pretty sad and.
I think Shade gets overshadowed a lot now. Her design plus her connection with Knuckles and the echidna tribes were really interesting, and it’s sad we’ll never see her or the Noctornus clan again thanks to Ken Penders.
"I don't remember anyone having a problem with Sonic Adventure's new characters" Uhhh...Big the Cat? Yeah, he has become an internet meme this past decade because of how stupid and random he is, but I remember during my early days in the Sonic fan community, he used to be one of the most hated characters in the franchise. It didn't help that people considered his fishing gimmick in Sonic Adventure to be boring, unnecessary and out of place for a Sonic game with how slow it was. To this day, I still see people saying his levels were the worst part of the game. I'm surprised Sega continued to use him afterwards. I know at one point they considered retiring him, but at that point, he had gained a cult following so he still shows up every now and then.
To me Unleashed feels like the end for the series. Mainly because How It Ends seems to be a send off. To me I feel like every other game after Unleashed feels like a soulless empty husk of what the series used to be.
there may be some more truth to that than you realize. Supposedly, there's a rumor on the internet that Sonic Unleashed would've been the final Sonic game ever made if it didn't sell well. Just something I've seen stated online.
Vain Pain I haven’t played them in a while (about a year probably). They are very good games. Color’s story is decent and I like the interactions in it. For Generations, story was pretty meh. Unleashed’s story felt like they put a lot more time in to it. It Sonic more than the rad to cool for school.
Even though Sonic the Hedgehog is a technically a "children's franchise" they set the bar high in the beginning with SA games and therefore the writing needs to be decent enough for the characters to effectively and accurately express themselves. Writers like Ian Flynn capture Sonic perfectly in the comics for instance. Same should be said especially for the mainline games. Nuff said.
I guess that's one of the reasons why I love this game. Especially Chip. He was so cute yet he played an important role in the story. I still hope for something like that on future games (that is if SEGA decides to put any effort).
Chip is a loyal and friendly companion to sonic. And as the plot continues, we see the power inside him that is Light Gaia. Not only is he underrated by fans, but he is also underestimated!
You know Chip and Sonic were great friends when the game devs thought it be nice for them to recieve exclusive CGI cutscenes and short films outside of the game.
Its weird how they managed make Chip a better companion than Tails ever was (aka third wheel sadly). At least with the kind of Tails we now know in Forces. Not the independent courageous Tails in SA2. Tails has gone completely downhill since Unleashed as serving Sonic's supposed "best pal"
Mah Boi Chip ! I would love to see him return in a Sonic game that has a three story arc, but has some mechanics like Telltale, but at the same time not entirely like telltale. What I mean by have mechanics like telltale is have few choose your dialogue events at insanely crucial moments & release hour long episodes in a couple of months, but the monthly additions are three different arcs that eventually lead to the finale, but each arc has character selections/mechanics like the speed from Unleashed, team missions from Heroes, & 2D/3D gameplay from Lego Dimensions Sonic DLC. Sounds over packed & crazy, but I believe that it could work with right people behind the development.
Chip's legacy in the series is supposed to be the bracelet. A part of Chip resides in it, and if Sonic wore it more often, or it was at least shown more it would be neat
You know what? Having watched this, I've decided that when I get the chance, I'm gonna replay Sonic Unleashed. I haven't thought about it in a while, but looking back, I have a lot of fond memories with this game. Sure some of the Werehog levels, while fun, were a bit long and that Eggmanland level was ridiculously hard. But overall, it was grand adventure with characters I love, beautiful levels, fast paced addictive gameplay and an unforgettable soundtrack. The worst part about Sonic Unleashed's undeserved negative reception (unless you're talking about the Wii version in which case fair enough) is that it set in stone what would be the trend for future Sonic stories. Sonic 06 had already robbed us of getting to regularly play as characters who weren't Sonic. But after this, the idea of Sonic game having narratives that so much as border on the very concept of "complex" was frowned upon. Say what you like about Sonic Forces. It's the first time in a long time we've gotten to play as someone other than Sonic and where the rest of the cast actually get to do something plot relevant... even if it is mostly off screen and or in optional voice-over lines. How's about this for an actual "Sonic Cycle"? 1. New game is released featuring new characters and story. Haters complain about inclusion of said characters and story. 2. Developers take on criticisms and for the next game focus in on Sonic and dumb down the story. 3. The same haters then complain about the lack of characters and dumbed down story. 4. Repeat.
Although I've never played much of Sonic Unleashed, I LOVE the concept of it and the characters/forms in the game. I think I'm actually probably one of the biggest Werehog fans around. I've had a Sonic Werehog keychain on my car key ring since 2009. I'm on my 4th or 5th one now, I think. Unfortunately, they only last a couple of years before they break. I always keep a couple spare werehog keychains around.
Like making her kind of represent the women back a long time ago where they hid their true emotions underneath a smile and then during the progression of the story she could become more confident and stop faking being happy all of the time. The public sees her as always happy. But what happed behind closed doors and they should remove the kiss scene so sonic would glow and his colors return indicating that his soul had retured
Awesome video man Sonic unleashed is actually my #1 favorite sonic game tbh it's really underrated definitely was ahead of it's time i actually liked the werehog and his play style definitely was a nice change up from just going fast all the time the ost was amazing too
I had this game, and i'll admit it was fun, and I did not mind the Werehog much, heck I even got a plush of him. And also Chip, very underated and it's nice to see that someone cleared up this great game, that I think deserves more love
Nice video. I like the idea of Sonic being more seriouse to complement the story. Interesting take. I'm not sure if the gameplay is any good but I'll give it a try.
Off topic, but if anyone wants to play that Sonic Runners game that was mentioned in the video that Sega shut down. Look up Sonic Runners Revival and you can play it again. Plus, Chip is a really helpful character in it.
I felt emotional when chip told sonic he must live meaning he must sacrifice himself to save sonic. This was the best character development out of all characters.
I LOVE and adore Chip- I love Sonic and Chip’s friendship and I WISHED they melted Chip’s collar on Sonic’s wrist as a permanent design choice for future game or AT LEAST make some reference to Chip in a future game. :,) Also I would love to see Sonic like how we saw him in unleashed again :,)
I very much agree with you on this. Chip was an amazing character that had great story and purpose. Sucks that unleashed was cast aside like the ugly duckling, I honestly thought it was a great game, one of my favorite sonic games of all time.
It's funny you mention the whole Werehog name criticism because my friend, Ed had this same problem and he prefers to refer to it as the Hogwolf which also has a better ring to it than "hedge wolf" and "wolf hog". XD
I started this game a long time ago got bored and stopped playing not long into it. After this video I might have to play it again and actually beat it this time lol. Scratch and Grounder are the most underrated characters in Sonic.
I hate saying goodbye to friends. Chip and Midna will always be remembered and hopefully brought back. Whether physicly, memento or memory. Though with Midna i'd prefer physicly.
I still remember Chip to this day. He is one of those characters who are underrated but feel completely memorable for his loyalty to his friend and his will to protect the planet. Sonic Unleashed is, I believe, the very last great sonic game to ever come out. The last game, I considered an adventure game, to ever release. I feel the games nowadays is just focus way to much on being a classic and a kiddish kind of fun. I miss Sonic saving the world and all the great creative stories. Even as bad a Sonic 06 was, I honestly loved the concept of the story and the cutscenes’ graphics are gorgeous. . It’s just how it was executed could have been done much better
Imagine an unleashed colors cross using day and night themes of different planets and maybe seeing multiple chips if the light and dark story expands past earth
I agree that some of the characters made should be one and done characters. Specifically chip and gamma are great examples. But there is so much that could be down with the rest of the characters. I can imagine plenty of stories they could do with shadow, rouge, omega, blaze, silver, cream, etc. I think silver and blaze shouldn’t appear TOO often because of their circumstances as characters being from the future and another dimension, but something like shadow or cream definitely have plenty of opportunities to be showcased in a bigger story again
Channel Pup, is there a chance you can do a Sonic Rank tier? I have seen other videos where people ranked the Sonic games they have played, but most of them are just joking around and ranks the games randomly for memes and stuff. I am just curious about what is your favorite and least favorites are in the series. Only if you feel like it.
1:40 for what people call the last of the "Dark era" Sonic games, I like Unleashed for all those reasons. the whole "it's for kids" argument is stupid. The Sonic Adventure games at least TRIED to give Sonic a cool and cinematic story because that's who Sonic is SUPPOSED to be, an action hero who just happens to be a cartoon animal. (like how Sly Cooper was) That's how he was always marketed. It's not until recent years that people think Sonic is ONLY for little kids
@@ChannelPup But it doesn't excuse poor story writting just because it's for 'children'. That argument is basically being dismissive. If the overall story is garbage then it's garbage whether it's intended for kids or adults. Stories for kids can be serious without overdoing it. Games like Legend of Zelda, Jack and Daxter, Kingdom Hearts, etc all had a perfect balance of light moments along with serious ones that worked well and those games were technically made for kids. It's insulting to think that all kids will enjoy and take any ol' garbage. Mind you, I am not referring to Unleashed, eventhough I do not care for the game compaired to some of the others, but the overall trend Sega has been taking with the Sonic games that come after. Plus if Sega really only intended Sonic for kids they wouldn't be pushing the whole nostalga trend in the recent games seeing how 2D sonic, and even chaos existed in games way before most, if not all, of their current demographics time.
I disagree, the Japanese version felt annoying and sounded like some Omochao, while the English voice felt like they had emotions and you could have a genuine conversation with.
@@cutepuppy5005the japanese voice actor is called ryoko shiraishi and the english voice actor is called anthony salerno i prefer the english voice it sounds so beautiful
I loved everything about Unleashed and didn't really mind '06 outside of some gameplay things. The relationship with Elise had literally 0 effect or significance to me, people were probably just pissed that she wasn't Amy or Blaze... or their oc's.
For sonic the werehog I think it came down to gameplay as some people were ok with it but some people really struggled with the werehog sections. I liked the werehog beat-em-ups but the platforming was changeling and the timing was critical for me. I don't think some people didn't like some of the story elements to. I liked them for what I did witness. I did love chip though!
I don’t think that SU was criticized just for the concept of a werehog, but that those werehog gameplay sections just were never that much fun. I didn’t finish the game because it got really boring for me. I really tried, I swear. That just stained everything else having to do with this game. Great video!
Considering that the vocal minority had condemned Sonic Unleashed to an undeserving existence in infamy leaves me unsurprised that Sega didn't update Sonic's design to reflect Unleashed's ending. I would assume that Sonic has a lockbox hidden away somewhere to protect some of his keepsakes, like Chip's Gaia Bracelet.
Underrated, you say... Listen, personally, I wouldn't even shine a single bit of light on Chip and here's why... After the reactions to Sonic 06, Sega was basically afraid of ever making anything that bad again and therefore, out of Sonic Team's poor understanding of why we actually hated the game, gave important characters other than Sonic a huge backseat. By characters that were given a backseat I specifically mean Tails. He is replaced by Chip and it shows so much. So I feel like giving more attention to Chip will, in the grand scheme of things, just be crediting Sonic Team on the act of replacing beloved characters of the series and is basically encouraging Sonic Team to continue with this. We can't credit Sonic Team for playing it safe and restricting the involvement of characters that meant so much to the series.
Thank you! About time I heard someone say it. I still can't figure out why so many people are so unfairly nitpicky when it comes to Sonic characters, and yet Chip is suddenly the one no one has a problem with! For real? Listening to people complaining and nitpicking to death practically everything about characters like Tails (or evey other reoccurring Sonic character for that matter) only to then overly praise a character like Chip and act like there is absolutely nothing wrong with him just comes across as a tad hypocritical if you ask me. He was kind of bland for my taste, I didn't find him funny, and he just came across as a bit annoying to me. It honestly doesn't seem fair that all of Sonic's friends have to constantly be sidelined for even more characters (seriously, if one of the biggest complaints is "Too many Sonic characters", then why are they introducing more) who basically have no other purpose than to be Sonic's BFF for one game, making Sonic pretty much a secondary character in his own story where all he does is give words of support to this new character, and are then never seen, heard of or mentioned ever again. That doesn't seem like much of an improvement. I'd honestly prefer to see Sonic's reoccurring friends being given another chance. With better writers they could give them more personalities and purpose in the story.
3:16 (I know I'm late) I mean Link did it 2 years prior with high critical success (Twilight Princess), so why can't Sonic do it. Before you all say that the wolf didn't change the game too much, I'm talking in the context he's talk (the idea on paper).
Well Modern Sonic is easily hotheaded and inpatient but your suppose to assume that. Maybe he continued to be funny and lightharded so he can have fun on his newest adventures.
Chip is 🅅🄴🅁🅈 underrated, I agree 100% , but Cosmo? like 🄷🄴🄻🄻 🅂🄷🄴 🄸🅂 🅄🄽🄳🄴🅁🅁🄰🅃🄴🄳, and so is NiGHTS 😕 and Mephiles, I think he's an underrated villain too, he's really different unlike all the other villains, like 🅅🄴🅁🅈
Channel Pup, do you think the game would be better if it had Knuckles instead of the Werehog like most fans wanted? I mean, I argue against that since I think the Werehog is an interesting tale for Sonic.
I'm think the characterization of Shadow was tampered with because Sonic Team is trying way too hard to keep him edger then Sonic. That is why he's stail.
I just started the video so I havent watched yet but here is the answer The most underrated Sonic characters are: Scratch and Grounder. I doubt you'll mention them but you KNOW I'm right. These characters havent even been TOUCHED in decades
When it come to the other sonic characters we love these character and want them to feel like they matter again not be relagated to 2 dimensional caricatures of themselves forced to stand in the background and cheer sonic on who is jesus apparently because no one else in the room is competent enough to do anything else. We arent asking for anything Shakespearean just something that isnt patronizing, disrespectful and obnoxiously tone deaf just fire the writers we had since colors and get better writers
Branden Austin Kinda weird how they have all these characters with powers and unnatural abilities yet none of them actually use them to their full potential 😅 I mean Silver and Blaze should be pretty powerful yet hardly do anything 😬
@@ROT695 yeah it is frustrating these writer outside of the comics just don't care and dont know how to utilize these character outside of filling in the background, cheering on sonic, and doing nothing meaningful to contribute to the story the sonic games desperately need new writers
Branden Austin I’d love a better story but kind of also want new gameplay that actually makes use of the characters abilities. I think it would be way more interesting that way. Might have an idea for it. 😂
Game dev mentality: if critics say game is bad therefore everything is bad. Including writing and characters which is just no true. Sega shouls have kept the writers for Unleashed instead of aquiring Pontiac and Warren. Such a shame
In my opinion, the characters that had the most development in one game was Chip and Shadow in SA2. Shadow is my favorite character to this day, not because of his edgy, modern version though. Shadow in SA2 is a lot different from Shadow today, and I refuse to believe that they are the same being. I have a theory to prove that. I believe that Shadow is indeed dead because of the fact that in Sonic Heroes, they tease that Shadow in that game was an android created by Eggman, and they explore that more in one of the many alternate stories of Shadow The Hedgehog. Even though they do say that Shadow is not an android, in my opinion, the Shadow after SA2 and so on is a reincarnation of the original Shadow, created by Eggman. He is not an android, but he is not the original Shadow, which is why Shadow only acts edgy and doesn't have any other characteristics that make him deep anymore. His edginess is a result of Eggman trying to make him evil, and he wanted to make sure that he wouldn't remember the original Shadow's past. Of course he fails because of the fact that Shadow does eventually remember the past, but I believe that Eggman partially succeeded because now Shadow has let go of his past, and he acts like he doesn't care about anyone but himself, which is what a villain would do. The original Shadow would never do that. So yeah, I just saved the original Shadow's credibility with my theory, and I am proud of it. SA2 definitely has the best story. I love it even more today than I did in the past. People make fun of the plot holes with things like why people confuse Shadow over Sonic, and why Shadow couldn’t realize what Maria’s wish really was, but this video really analyzed the story well, and those plot holes are covered up to me (the video is over 2 hours long, but it’s worth it): m.ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-fPvtm9Ms_1g.html
