The macOS Sonoma 14.1 update is causing issues for some Unsupported OpenCore Legacy Patcher 1.1.0 Mac devices that require an updated 14.1 KDK update. After installing the Sonoma 14.1 Update the Mac will be stuck at a progress bar, or Black Screen and be unable to boot back into the OS. I'll show you how to get your Mac back up and running again.
UPDATE! OpenCore Legacy Patcher 1.2.1 is live! This fixes the issues found in the macOS Sonoma 14.1 and 14.1.1 updates!
Commands in macOS Recovery to revert the root patches
mount -uw "/Volumes/Macintosh HD"
bless --mount "/Volumes/Macintosh HD" -bootefi --last-sealed-snapshot
then reboot

My 2015 iMac 5K was stuck at Apple logo with no progress bar and recovery method worked like a charm and I am back in business. Thanks for the quick video, it is much appreciated! And if anyone from OCLP teams sees this, we are all very grateful for your insanely hard work.

I would like to thank all the developers that allow those of us with old macs to update to the last operating systems. I only saw this video after starting to update my iMac 10.1 and after the fiirst restart it failed to install Sonoma 14.1. Tried a second time to install and this second time everything worked as expected and I'm now on Sonoma 14.1 on a 14 year old iMac, upgraded last year with a 1TB SSD.

@pedromonteiro6043 agreed! The devs are awesome, just think of the stress they are going through right now trying to fix the issue. They already have 1.2.0 in dev with multiple fixes! I'm glad your iMac is up and running 👍

Hello Mr.Macintosh I am blocked with this issue (progress bar blocked around 20%) I tried your solution : start and hold option key, select EFI Boot, press space bar, select Recovery 14.0 (dmg), and .. nothing happened. The screen is black and finally the Mac reboot automatically. Can you please help me to repair the EFI Boot ? Thank you very much.

I love you Mr. Macintosh. You saved me from having to reinstall the OS because when OS Sonoma was installed it would get stuck at that 25-30%. Your instructions helped me boot in and i was able to fix the issues that was causing the issues. Not only that, i was able to save all of the files that were on my computer. Well done. You are a life saver. I am subscribing and following you. Thank you again.

And once again, you are the savior of the day! I encountered this issue with my late '12 mini while updating to 14.1. It got stuck, and even though I followed the steps you provided, the problem persisted until I tried starting in safe mode. Now, it's completing the update in that mode. 😅

Firstly, thank you once again for the detailed guide. I bit the bullet yesterday and ended up having the Apple logo + 1/3 stuck loading bar. Tried rebooting several times with no luck. Today saw this video and solved the stuck boot problem. 2012 15" Retina MacBook Pro, had to enter safe boot and reapply the Root Patches (luckily I have a Thunderbolt ethernet adapter so there were no major issues). So far it's all working ok. Thank you!

Thank you for the solution! I was stuck on the boot screen after installing the root patches. I have the same 2017 model, and when I bought it 6 years ago, I also bought the USB-C to Ethernet adapter in case I might need it one day. Six years later, today was the day! :D

This is the second time i got caught updating too quickly and the KDK fixed the problem. 2013 Macbook Air. Thanks Mr. Macintosh. The 3rd option worked using a usb to install the kdk since wi-fi and ethernet did not work in safe mode and would freeze after i connected a usb hub. I swear i am going to wait 2 weeks to a month before updating going forward. I thought i was going to have to reload everything but i didn't lose any data. Awesome Assistance - never heard of Bless before but then again only used mac for 2 years so.......

Mr. Macintosh ... you are a god (and all the other developers/contributors to Opencore as well 🙂. OCLP has allowed me to 'recover'/reuse multiple OSX machines over the last couple of years, including this MBAir 6,2 that I'm happy using right now that I had thought was wasted 4 years ago through a failing battery. OCLP worked wonders with it, and even with the MacMini 3,1 that I have just updated with an SSD and Sonoma (NB: anyone trying that would need to buy a USB 2.0 dongle to get around the USB 1.0 issue). This troubleshooting video has allowed me to just repair the 'bricked' iMac that is my main machine that just went haywire with the Sonoma 14.1 update. Keep up the AMAZING work. We will always be indebted to you all (round of applause 🙂.

Thank you. Truly 🙏🏼. So, I do not have an Ethernet dongle & I did not have functioning WiFi either of course. But I do have an iPhone with a hotspot & was able to plugin the iPhone & connect via USB to the hotspot which allowed me to perform this workaround. Just thought I’d share in hopes it helps anyone else! It’s been said before by many, but thank you, so so much. For this software & especially for this life saving video. I installed the latest update without even thinking & that’s not how I normally go about things but I could not boot up past the login screen & safe mode would not function either. THANK. YOU. for this quick workaround & clear explanation of the steps/code. I have the exact same model as you display in this example & everything went flawlessly. For now. Will be on the lookout for future patches as they come. Thank you again 🙌🏼

Great Video and solution! I had exactly the problem with a MacBook Pro 8.1 Late 2011, no Network due to non working WiFi drivers which prevented the KDK to load during root patching. Mac would not boot and show Apple Logo and no progress bar. Followed your instruction and used Ethernet to get it back working 😀

Thanks for this video! Three little notes: 1) I thought I'd prepared sufficiently by installing OpenCore Legacy Patcher 1.1.0 over Ethernet, and just in case I manually installed the KDK for 14.1 too, before upgrading from macOS 14.0 to 14.1. Still, I got the 30-40% progress bar issue while upgrading the OS, and had to boot to safe mode, which let the upgrade complete. I could then remove the root patches and reinstall them, and everything worked fine in the end. Note 2) The system is very slow at the login screen in safe mode on my unsupported MBP 15" late 2013 when entering my password. Might affect all older machines and not just mine. And note 3) If you run Boot Camp, the EFI partition might show up labeled as "Windows", but the icon is the same design as shown in the video.

Thanks for posting this Mr Mac. Although not a black screen, my 2016 Retina Macbook Pro would load to the login screen, let me login but then freeze with the backdrop photo and my user picture. No progress bar or anything. Followed your video on my phone (which I had to use as a wired access point) due to the Wifi issue and all worked out.

I have a collection of 20 Pros, Airs, and iMacs 2009-2020. I updated them all to 14.1 last night and today. Some went smoothly and some were hard. All were successful in the end. Two suggestions that have helped me. 1. Keep an installation of a previously working system (like Ventura) on another volume so you can always boot back to that. 2. Download the installer and build an installer disk with OCLP and then boot with that and start an install to your current installation. 14.1 sees that you are installing to 14.0 and does an upgrade. Lastly, if it hangs you can sometimes power off and restart and hold down the shift key and limp up to safe mode, install patches and then reboot. I’m surprised by the amount of variations from one machine to the next but that’s the fun right! Sometimes you just have to tinker.

First off, i have to say that this video and all your videos are absolutely awesome, and help a great deal! I have a strange issue that's very close to this one. I'm on a late 2013 iMac running Sonoma 14.4.1, using the OCLP 1.4.3. The computer was running laggy after reboot, so i ran the patcher and it would not let me in past the login screen in normal or Safe Mode. So i did the "bless to the last snapshot", now i don't even get to the login screen, i instead get the back screen when booting, but i can now get in Safe Mode. Really unsure what my next steps are from here? Would it be possible to run the bless to last snapshot again, or plug Ethernet into the iMac and run the patcher again, or is there a third option that i can try to resolve the issue?

I got the “40%” lockup after leaving it to upgrade overnight. Had to hard switch it off. Ended up rebooting using the Sonoma installer USB drive. Booted using that stick’s OC EFI, but into the actual Sonoma volume. Redid the root patches while in there, shut down, and removed the USB. Start up again and things worked as intended-OC and a correctly patched internal installation.

This didn't fix my issue. I am still stuck at about 25-30% status bar. Wifi isn't working. Will there be more direction for those with a macbook pro from 2013? Maybe my issue can be remedied with a wired dongle? Should this be ethernet to usb? Many thanks!!!

Question, If we do the OCLP update first, will the 14.1 update go well, or will we have to go through this procedure?

I wish I could have seen this sooner, I already wiped out my 2015 MBP and back to older version

if you're like me and you reset the NVRAM as a part of the regular troubleshooting steps, i had to jump into internet recovery. internet on my 17,1 imac worked all good in recovery. it prompted me to reset my password, but i chose that my keyboard was having issues just to avoid messing with my user accounts, which told me to turn off filevault. i did this, and i stopped getting the prohibited 🚫 symbol, and i was able to get my EFI boot screen back, allowing me to then open 14.1 recovery.

because OCLP 1.1 forget include KDK 14.1 23b74. If you reboot error, update kdk to 14.1, then patch. That' s ok. Thx, mr.mactonish , you are my god.🎉

I see that you're having the exact same Boot Logo issue (missing/order reversed being displayed before the boot picker instead of after) with your MacBook Pro 2017. Did you manage to fix it somehow?

I had issues with 14.0 and was thinking of reverting to Ventura. However 14.1 is stable for me!

Hi Mr. Macintosh, I'm wondering if the suggested fix would work if upgrade from Ventura to 14.1 failed? I used to run Ventura (installed using OCLP 0.6.4 April this year) on my late 2012 iMac 27" prior to the upgrade. I built a Sonoma 14.1 installer on USB using OCLP 1.1.0. The portion of installing from USB seemed to work but I'm not able to start my iMac when I try to boot from the hard drive. The progress bar either gets stuck at 1/3 or 1/10. I'm wondering the suggested approach only fixes upgrade from 14.0 to 14.1 or would work in my scenario as well. I appreciate your reply or any other suggestion you may have.

Hi, great videos thanks so much for providing such great instruction. I followed one of your previous videos to install Sonoma on my iMac 2010 via USB, but when I clicked the EFI option in Recovery... the screen went black. I restarted but it seems that I cannot get into Recovery at all now. I've tried holding Option on restart multiple times, Option-R, resetting the PRAM, resetting the SMC, but no matter what I do it seems that I cannot get into Recovery at all. I have pulled the SSD and tried installing high Sierra onto it from a mac pro with Monterey but that was unsuccessful as Monterey is too new apparently (even with a patcher installing it direct to the SSD). I have also created a bootable USB with Monterey and also another with High Sierra, but it seems the problem is that I cannot get into Recovery or see anything on the screen when I restart, in order for me to do anything. I have even pulled both SSD and HDD, replacing the HDD with a drive I know has High Sierra on, but again, black screen no matter what I do. I have tested the keyboard, working OK, The screen does fire up as I can see LCD illumination but I do not get any options. Would you be able to suggest something else? Thank you! K
