I enjoy calling him the wrong name...it adds to his absolute comedic presence. He's an idiot and I love having him act like an arse. The only thing is...I can't seem to give him anything. Can they only hold guns? Or can you hand him a spear? IF so...HOW?!?
Virginia (3 arm/leg girl) can hold a pistol and shotgun at the same time, she absolutely does shoot, giving her both guns she kills everything that comes close, quite strong but yeah her AI is pretty bugged. By the way you should do the story or at least break the wood on the entrance to the caves, reason being is that you get new enemy types spawning in after breaking the wood, the enemies even fight each other. That's why there's this kind of music like audio that plays when you do it, you've released new enemies into the world that were once stuck in the caves.
Items respawning was a feature in the forest. It is intended, my guess is to reduce grinding mechanics and not having to concern with complete depletion of resources. Also the original forest had some sort ot patrols and hostility system. Some areas will have more patrols and activity, and the intensity of the attacks is connected to hostility. The more cannibalism you kill, the higher it goes
Kelvin can provide unlimited fish as long as you're next to a water source. While you can't see the fish. Kelvin can. Just tell him "Get fish and drop here", in 5 mins you'll have a pile of 30 fish
I remember that The Forest was an absolute mess for the first year it was out in Early Access. He got it sorted pretty well, tho, so I trust he'll get Sons sorted, too. Tho his timetable seems laughably ambitious.
We dont know what tools or pipelines exist. The game as it stands is really good for an "early access game" and most systems work very well. If their pipeline and codebase was done right its very possible. A lot of devs make mistakes of making things for one specific use case instead of making it a broader re-usable function. I dont think that is the case here.
This mentality is why gaming companies release broken products. Bottom of the barrel standards from gamers and toxic optimism even after being burned year after by these companies.
@@apk4381 That's a mighty big assumption based on literally nothing in my comment. Also, there's a massive difference between an Early Access title and a game launched by a big publisher full of bugs. Take your pretentious shit somewhere else like REEEsetEra.
@@apk4381no that is towards fully finished products and especially the AAA variety, early access is just that you are choosing to pay to play early and help the Devs work out the kinks it's not the same at all pal
"Kevin especially loves to just sit in fire and roast his testicles and then show off while he's doing it, he absolutely adores doing that he has this uh testicle roasting fetish" 🤣🤣🤣 I couldn't stop laughing my neighbours must think I'm mad.
@Worth A Buy I've watched you for years now, and I just want to say thanks. No bullshit, always reliable. You are my first port of call before buying any game you offer a more balanced and raw opinion that's always dead useful. I really appreciate what you do... even if you do sound like one of the hairy bikers :) thanks
Pro Tips: (1) - Build fires in caves, sticks are cheap!! (2) - Sticks planted in ground, use axe to make pointy sticks, reinforce pointy stick with stones, THEN make a double layer of sticks (not reinforced behind) raiders cant get through. (3) run around the whole island on the beach, lots of loot, lots of armour, lots of items, no risk (4) give your handgun to 3 arm lady (5) you can send logs down a zipline into log storage (6) remember you can built tent and save in tents after each fight. Enjoy.
really? In the forest it was also tied to the time you survived. At like day 30-40 you saw quite big groups of armsy, virginia, cannibals and the big piglet thingy.
@@WetAdek Nights survived and how many cannibals you killed, if you ate the cannibals or not, there were a lot of variables. You could actually finish the forest 1 passive without killing any cannibal by just not killing any, if you don't kill them they don't increase in difficulty.
@@WetAdek Lots of stuff increased spawns and attracted enemies in the first game : Leaving dead bodies near your base unburned Leaving tree stumps unchopped Enemy effigies Percentage of map explored (including caves) Amount of noise you are making (including chopping and building) Amount of light you are creating Letting attackers get away (spawns in a new group that eventually comes back, supposed to look like the runner told the tribemates) Amount of player-enemy interaction as a whole The player's behavior/actions in view of non-attacking enemies and even more than that. I just got the game and I'm just assuming they left in all those systems, but I can't confirm yet.
Waterfalls are extremely loud in real life depending on how big they are. If anything most games downplay how loud and dangerous they are and how you can basically get sucked into the stream if you go too close.
Not really run into any bugs except pathfinding. Regards to the quantity of enemies, it seems to entirely depend if you're building near a patrol route and how many days into the game you are. It's a good example of early access, very stable and fun.
Yeah I’m on the same boat, not many bugs I’ve really experienced. Me and my friend set up base right on the shoreline and we’re not really using the NPCs so I guess that eliminates the bulk of bugs people have issues with
@@pauperslament3467 they actually do that too, there’s been times me and my friend got ambushed by like 4 or more and if they lose too many people they’ll start retreating or trying more guerrilla like tactics
Game is fun but ridiculous. We ran around collecting meat cubes, energy bars, soda and mres. We never had any problems with the seasons. We never needed a base, just ran from cave to cave making tarp tents. There was no incentive to build, no danger at night, just sleep in a tent, no real effect from the cold, no need to build rain collectors, no hordes of mutants or cannibals. The only time we got attacked was when we tried build a base. Mack says "we don't care about the story, it's a survival game" it isn't a survival game. the fact that the loot respawns constantly negates any need to survive, as does the pathetic attempt at seasonal/environmental changes I haven't died once in 30 odd days.
I hope the ending is a place holder as it just happens with no lead-up and explanation to what is hell is happening its just odd, like they ran out of money and said lets just end it there.
Overall I think the world and immersion is better than the first game but the campaign and tunnel layout is way simpler than the first making it too easy. Hopefully they fix that but i doubt it. The main issue is the map is too big so the caves don’t overlap enough to give a proper puzzle.
Maybe Against The Storm is something for you Mack, it's a roguelite city builder (in early access cause that is apparently all games nowadays) that people seem to be raving about.
Strangely enough, with the exception of the audio bug you mentioned, I’ve encountered none of these bugs. I killed Kelvin straight off as I wanted to be immersed in a true solo game so no bugs there. Frame rate is solid, wildlife a plenty at my island base, building did take a second to learn but I built exactly what I wanted…honestly having a blast with it. Being EA I’ll obviously come back to see improvements down the line but at launch this is already fantastic and has HUGE potential. Great review though and glad it still got a green thumb!
With PC's it's always a guess if you gonna get the bugs or not. Depending on what videocard you have, etc. When Cyberpunk was just released, I had a rather smooth experience. Then the updates came and they made my game worse and worse, where I had only minor bugs before, I had while I couldn't play the game at all cause each time I went to look on the map, or the inventory the game would crash dive the frames, making it a slide show for several seconds. It just made the whole game unplayable cause it was that freaking annoying. Now I have to play it windowed at a lower resolution then 4k cause that is the only way to prevent that from happening for some weird ass reason. I also have to turn off the RTX where before I could play with it just fine.
@@Jorendo absolutely true! Just wanted to voice that it’s not the same experience for everyone. Playing with the AI or in multiplayer probably has its own share of bugs I’ve never seen.
Yea it's weird, Kelvin does none of that in my game and the 3-legged woman uses the handgun all the time. The building isn't clunky at all, in fact this is the best building I've played in a survival game (no bugs there either) My world is FILLED with fishes and wildlife, squirrels and deer everywhere even moose, in fact there are way too many squirrels and deer imo. I also agree with the audio bug though, like the waterfalls are way too loud.
Absolutely second this response. I am having very similar experiences as BossDGamer. I kept Kevin though...he's good for a laugh and he builds shit for me.
The enemies learn you and attack or stay away according to your behavior, most likely in your big 5 person run you either scared the cannibals or somehow kept them mostly peaceful
@Thawne1338 the challenge is that the hard encounters are in the caves with the big mutants, that you have to beat to progress the story lol. It also depends on where you build your base, if you really want a challenge, build it right on top of a village where the tribes have weapons.
@@GangsterFrankensteinComputer Accidentally built a camp on a cannibal camp I had cleared out.. after I died and restarted, I was greeted by a fully spawned camp and killed again. So kinda got caught in a semi death loop. Eventually just restarted.
Love the reviews. I have not seen that many bugs on my end or at least they are disguised so well in the immersive environment that I just don't notice. I actually find the building to be quite impressive and was able to push the tech quite far in interesting ways. Sometimes the placement system does not quite behave but I found a few quick fixes through experimentation.
Wow I have 8 hours played so far. Never had kelvin or Virginia walk through my fire and I haven’t had some of the other problems either. Agreed though it needs some fixing and balancing and it needs a lot more building options
It has a deep learning curve for sure. But a friend and I played 2 hrs last night and enjoyed it . 2 hours just learning but gonna start a fresh one and survival on!
@@theyfearme1379 If you just don't build a base, the game is 10x easier. Just max out your crafting equipment in a day or two, run around to the different caves, grab some loot, survive on the infinite candy bars and soda, and you'll beat the game, no problem. Literally, all the animals respawn in the same exact spot every day. So find where a few spawn, and you'll be good forever. It's a neat concept, and I enjoyed playing it with friends, but I wouldn't say it's a good game. If me and my gf can beat a survival horror game on the very first try, on the hardest difficulty, without any of us dying, there's an issue. Just saying.
Great review! While I am having fun, less since I'm playing solo, I've also encountered several of the bugs you mention, clunky problems, and lack of fish. One bug I had required a new save, but I caught it early. My character became sleepy in 5 min from full rest, food, water, and no strain every day. Couldn't stay awake long enough to do anything! Also even on custom with low aggro the cannibals are swarming me constantly.
we found out that, if you ask kelvin to catch fish, he just goes to the river and finds some, even though there isn't any fish in it. that way we have unlimited food without any real food source nearby. don't know if this is intentional or not.
Not sure about the enemy amount of spawns but, what i can tell you about the previous ''The forest'' game is that, the more days you survive in the game, the more dangerous enemies will spawn. And i mean by a massive difference. Day one you might not even see a level one noob canibal. Day 60 and your camp might get attacked by absolute demon spawn nightmares.
Not only that, but depending on the the location where you started building, the game can create a totally different experience. (on a patrol route or not etc.). Plus your experience with tribes also mattered. If you let a scout escape he'll usually come back with friends, Once you had a history of fights with a certain clan they will keep visiting you etc. But all of these things take longer playtime to notice in the reviewers defense
@@apocalypsed8what can you exactly do with masks, skull and their heads? It seems you can confuse them or they get scared but i dont really know how strong these effects are
The game is really fucking broken, the last game came out in 2014, it's now 2023 there is no reason a game in development this long should be in such a bad state, when you pick up the rebreather it literally breaks the game and all you can do is start a new game, audio is absolute dog shit, A.I is a joke. Look I understand this is a early access game but for the time it's been in development it should not be in such a bad state.....and it's not worth the asking price, 15 euro is more what it should cost 30 is to much
Exactly. I do not understand how this game is so hyped, because it looks bad and feels bad to play it. Not accounting the bugs... And the second game looks the same game but more glitchy.
The Forest wasn't fully released till 2018. This game has only been in development since about 2019 or so. It's made by a small team to. I dont know what you expect from an alpha release.
@@thedude8526 other then the fact that the game came into early access just a few weeks ago, before that it was going to be a full on full game release. Bait and switch is a scummy thing to do
@@rossren9691 It wasn't a bait and switch, they were going to delay the game again by another 6-7 months but felt it was best to just get it in the hands of players sooner rather than wait even longer. It's what the players wanted and they made the right call, the game is great in it's current state and it's only going to get better. You're way over exaggerating the games problems, the game is mostly fine for a newly released early access game, it's very cheap too for what you get.
@Ross Ren Scummy how? The developers delayed the game multiple times and were honest with the player base. As previously stated, the game was to be delayed again but players wanted it in its current state and the devopers obliged and made the game fairly cheap. If anything, they should be commended for their honesty.
@@Pika0294 so true. Unfortunately I already did lol. Reskin/asset flip as far as I'm concerned. And I played the absolute hell out of the first one. It's one of my favorite games.
@@thegatesofsleep I can tell you're grinding your nub on the edge of your table trying to defend the people that don't even know your name. Up until a few weeks ago the game was scheduled for a full release. I doubt they have rolled back to older version to just release it for early access. Just to make a bit shittier for the title of "EA"
I would say no not worth a buy. After playing it and beating it with friends we felt like the game was too easy. My group went spelunking mainly after giving up on the building, because we were attacked every 5 min and thus the integrity of our house was compromised and making quick fixes to structures is not a thing. After we got guns we were blowing through everything so quickly and we hardly knew what the story was and it just ended after we went into a bunker for supplies. Def not worth a buy right now get this game on sale.
I never had an issues with land based wild life all over the place, but I have not seen a single fish in 3 hours of playing... and I looked for them. Also, when I initially made my base, I was attacked a little too much by pretty big groups with some larger monsters as well, but after I built a bunch of defenses, they quite litterally never attacked me again. Once you get some of the better weapons, the game becomes way too easy and is kind of pointless to continue with. The base building is also pretty limited. You can't create a water source for your base outside of plants. You also only have 2 monster traps. There is a really great story line surrounding golf though. I counted about 5 different areas with paper copies of emails of people raging about "where are the golf balls, we found the golf balls, etc" Too bad that is the best part of the story. I do still think its worth the $30 though. As a big fan of the forest, I can tell you the developer has a good track record when it cames to fleshing out games and adding content. The forest got quite a few updates that took it from good, to better, to one of the best. SO hang in there if you bought it, wait a while longer if you didn't.
I was building my own design log cabin and at one point I decided to chop out a log I'd built along the floor, suddenly as I was hacking away with my axe, my character was blasted about 100 metres up into the air, above all the trees around me!
Firstly, I thoroughly enjoy your videos. You are definitely my favorite RU-vid game reviewer. Now, you mentioned an exploit that you could loot suitcases and boxes and then when you log in another time then you can loot them again. That is to be expected. That is exactly how it was in the original game. In the forest you can loot suitcases from the crashed plane and a few hours later, even during the same playthrough, they are all closed and lootable again. The other thing I would say is that I hope you will review this game again after a year or so. I say this because I bought the original Forest game the week it came out and I put over a thousand hours into it. I know you didn't like it but to compare the way the game was the week it came out to the way it was when it left Early Access, it is like chalk and cheese. As you said, it is Early Access and there will be bugs but my experience with the developers of this game and the original game is that they do listen to their players and in the first game they did an amazing job fixing all the issues in the game. I loved the original game and after watching your review, I am buying this one too.
The item respawn "feature" is from the last game. Just log out or sleep for a couple days and all items in the game respawn except for unique story items
im also not encountering to many bugs. me and my gf had one crash so far. and it was due to her doing something in my backpack. other than that it is working almost perfectly. sometimes the building can be a bit finicky but thats fine. To me the biggest problem is what you can do. its the sequal to the forest yet many building schematics are missing. Like you cant even make a water collector. nor a log sled without the 3d printer. which if you dont know about it you may find only very late. its not really good. i also have had enemies spawning in my base which is a little annoying. not too bad but not fun. Other than that to me its one of the best immersive feeling survival games for sure. the sound design is absolutely amazing. the graphics are very good as well
Looks promising, but I'll give it another year or two to get finished and drop in price. I'm too old to beta test a game at full price - I've wasted far too long doing that over the past decade. It has very impressive visuals, it's just the bugs that would grind my gears.
A dedicated server with every players progression is a must, And a PvP Dedicated server is on The Forest, I don't know why it was cut for Son's of the forest.
If anything i thought the bespoke building was very intuitive. Yeah there are a few bugs with struts but overall if just start placing shit down (the book tells you a bunch but i do agree that targeting the right actions is sometimes really annoyinng, the angle at which you're looking at a log is very wonky). It's alot of lifting shit up, placing struts, removing supports that are no longer needed. It's a very dynamic system and i kind of like it.
@@TheSometimeAfter I like the dev saying they didn't feel the game was ready before releasing it as opposed to the ones telling everyone how amazing their game is for it to come out a broken mess, could of worded it better
Yes there are bugs and some things not working or not yet added, but theyve got a fantastic base to improve on now and its great and for £25 its still better than the rest of the "AAA" tripe we see releasing these days.
I think the amount of cannibals that attack you is based upon how much you've aggravated them. At least i think that is kinda how it worked in the first game.
The fish bug? At this point looks like a mechanic, in the forest 1 you could've find fish only in designated areas [puddles] The re-open chest = get loot at each join bug? It's also at this point a mechanic. You can actually dupe items by saving (not being the host), giving an item to a friend of yours, get out, get in with the save from before (you still have the item) The more players = less danger thing? It's by now a 'mechanic', you can kill everything in the forest 1 without any issues by playing with a friend, in single player is a totally different experience on so many levels. The sound bug of the ambience? Yep, it's still in the forest. Also in caves you pretty much get deafen in some parts (looks like this also become a 'feature' of the game)
I'm not really interested in this game BUT I may just buy it to support the devs after they released it at such a great price. This was a huge game for a lot of people, even temporarily causing Steam issues with the amount of downloads, yet there it is for just £25. They could have gouged the fanbase with a much higher price than that and it especially stands out when the UK Steam has had an influx of AAA games coming in at £60-70 for just Standard Editions in the last few months.
Speaking of bugs, we're playing a 4 player coop game and 3 of us are experiencing winter currently while for one guy it's still summer.. lol not joking.
In my experience for the three legged lady to actually use the gun she needs to see you being agressive to whatever you want her to shoot first thats when she "learns" what to do i guess. When i got her as a companion at first she was useless she would just run away from the cannibals and give the gun back to me but thats because before that i was avoiding any confrontation with them using the mask. But after i took care of them myself with a bow and kept giving the gun back to her by the time the next wave of cannibals showed up she absolutely lit them up aimbotting them all no problem and you dont need to give her ammo so she became an S tier almost turret like companion, nothing comes close to me anymore if shes near and i havent even gave her the shotgun yet.
That's funny, when I armed Virginia, she was dropping bodies rapidly with single headshots from over 100 yards away lol. I'm glad we don't have to give her ammo.
BLAAHAHAHAHAHHAHA you call him Kevin too? It's KeLvin...I was screaming Kevin the entire time too hahaha Anyway...The Forest is a great game, fun coop, great atmosphere. This is more of it...wish it wasn't as buggy, but the game has a lot of fun packed into it for those interested in the adventure.
Thanks for this, Mack👍 In the Forest 1, I mainly ate the cannibals bc there were so many, and you got about 5 bits of food if you chopped em up, then burned the rest for bones to make armour. Wonder if this still applies
Ok that's weird, Virginia is a menace in my game; I gave her a pistol, and she just went ham om everyone who came close. Sometime in the beginning I didn't even have time to react before she had smoked them all. Haven't had issues with her and Kelvin burning themselves either, guess I have just been lucky. XD
i watched a few videos, one guy told the 3 armed and legged woman is extremely powerfull with a pistol etc. he did point out give a LOADED pistol to her and so maybe mac gave a empty gun why she will not shoot? also i heard if its loaded she will not run out of ammo. I am tempted to buy this but maybe i just wait a bit longer for more patches to come out and grab it then. at least i would imagine the biggest bugs will be patched fastest to make the game enjoyable.
I played solo and beat the game twice. Amazing early access. My crash was in the snow so it was difficult but I managed to keep everyone alive. Bugs are fine. I have a high tolerance for bugs in indie games so I guess I am an odd one out.
Im on day 10 and im getting CONSTANTLY attacked. Im blowing through my pistol ammo like a madman. Maybe I should have built a base in the first few days instead of exploring etc
Use the bow so you can retrieve your arrows after firing & give the pistol to Virginia - she has unlimited ammo & murders everything quick. First 4 days you plot out your base and you build a palisade around the perimeter - it keeps them out. If you leave base building too late you'll be constantly harassed.
I think this is a fair view of early access. Building is clunky - but it's the enemy NPCs which are the big issue from what I can see. I seem to get swarms of them attacking from different tribes once every three days. Solo player fighting off 6 enemy trashing the base (again) - rinse / repeat. Fun but needs a hell of a lot of work and removal of Zerg Rush NPC mechanics.
Although I didn't finish The Forest, I still liked it quite a bit. The survival and crafting aspects especially. The base building not so much since all bases, except tree houses, were just enemy-magnets. You don't really need to build bases either since you can carry a generous amount of each thing when upgraded. I'm hoping for a more interesting base building experience in this one. Looking forward to playing it in a couple of years when it leaves EA!
