Sony adds 2mm to a Nikon 13 year old 14-24. Oh wow amazing lol.
@WingWongDingDong
@WingWongDingDong 4 года назад
@@redauwg911 An extra 2mm on the wide end is like going from 35mm to 30mm. Hang on isn't that exactly what Nikon did to their Z 16-35mm equivalent and then 'graciously' gave you an extra 2mm on the wide end? I remember you Nikon fanboys had a field day; you all simultaneously went to the bathroom to clean up after the announcement dropped. Why can't you just be happy that someone in the industry is progressing in lens design instead of raging silently that your DSLRs still don't have CFexpress support. Oops, shouldn't mention that. I should probably just say it's a great time to be a Nikon shooter instead! ;)

I always look forward to your reviews, always so well put together, honest, informative and insightful - even the strange humor has a certain likability to it. RU-vid and photography would be a diminished experience without you guys doing what you do. Please keep up the great work!

Most reviewers seem to think a 12-24 is only for architecture. I travel a lot and I’m always inside darkish temples, palaces, etc. I need a 2.8 12. Thank you for showing what the lens can do on something other than concrete buttresses.

Saved some pennies and got it even though I have had the f/4 since 2017 (not that long ago) before that the E 1018 f/4 (15-27) at 12mm in full frame in 2015 (a 2012 lens) but also the Voigtlander 12mm f/5.6 ii Leica m mount asph and the Voigtlander E 12mm f/5.6 and Voigtlander 10mm f/5.6 all used on the A7S so not my first time with ultra wides. First the 1224 and the 24240 are great to have in a small bag (incognito) to have for that any occasion every day. I like landscapes sunrise/sets and astro milky ways. That being said I also did not do panos till just 2020. A 12mm gives a pano wide capture in 3:2 ratio in one fast capture. For indoor a room you will see elongation of doors and windows to the sides, that is just lens physics. Also at night doing astro milky way you will see elongated stars (pincushion) in corners on some chip lenses (Rokinon 12mm/14mm). A fact the 1635 f/4 (2014) and the 1224 f/4 (2017) have pin sharp stars in upper corners with no coma along with the E 1018 f/4 (if using the NPF rule) all NO pincushion. Star capture is the true test of a lens, that can not be done in a lab. The past two months at new moons I captured the Milky Way with the f/2.8 on the A7Siii with the Hadia rear Clear Night filter, at f/2.8, 13s, 6400 jpegs looked like 3D HDR with MW colors and RAW did not need to touch. PS/Lr/ON1 RAW had no trouble stitching panos and PTGui used stars for control points, it is like a 42MP camera at f/8 during the day sharp. Normally with the galactic center to right of frame you get star elongation but the f/2.8 pin sharp both sides and corners with a daylight bright image with stars. Today with Topaz Gigapixel I can get a 300MP images in a minute. For a sunrise nice, clean and clear wide open but for true lens sharpness 2 stops above 2.8 at 5.6 you can see the in the shadow of bark on driftwood and doing a 5 frame at +/- 2 ev you get that small sun with sun star and clean sharp colorful bright in the dark shadows with no color fringes on edges. a pano looking 3:2 image even with the curve of the horizon (yes truly you will see that with your peripheral vision) a pano gives you a straight horizon. If you see the slightest elongated star in a corner even at the fastest SS use Capture One it has a pincushion correction that will make the stars pin sharp BUT foreground is distorted so a PS blend is needed, I did with some 2015 Rokinon 14mm f/2.8 images, like WOW!

Laowa and Samyang probably won't be autofocus. I don't know Irix, but I expect the same. For absolute optical performance, Laowa are not really that wonderful. They are "very good", but mainly, they tend to be unique products -- no _direct_ competition for many of their products.

Thanks for reviewing it in situations where both the wide focal range and aperture are put into play. I think most photographers out there are understandably balking at the price tag, especially when the Sigma 14-24mm f2.8 and the Sony 12-24mm f4 are both solid and half the price. But I think you helped demonstrate that having all three elements -- 12mm, f2.8, and zoom -- in one package can be very useful for the right person who doesn't want to compromise between them. For those who like to shoot superwide in a variety of ways, this is going to be a hell of a lens.

@@davegrenier1160 Did a quick search, released 2019. It's one of their newest lenses for their mirrorless system. I see it got a quick mention on the sunstars video but I don't think a full review has been done: www.dpreview.com/videos/4967878425/dpreview-tv-the-great-ultra-wide-sunstar-shootout Not a big deal, just a super exciting new lens (to me); very light (great for hiking/travel), 14mm on the wide end and can take filters (great for landscapes).

I will NEVER understand why OBVIOUS alternatives are not even mentioned (in this case Sigma's DN(!) 14-24mm (And the DN in vertical 14mm + nodal-point-pivot on a tripod : you might have much better results (if You need those extra 2mm) at less than half the price -granted, You could do the same stitching with the 12-24. The Sony GM, physically, could even be considered to be a clone of the Sigma DN - and not the other way 'round lol ) I bought the DN 14-24 (with the money +spare of selling the sony 2.8 16-35) next to my already 12mm Laowa zero-distortion (and Samyang.stereoscopic FF-Fisheye). Granted : not the same - but just saying : A cheaper approach suits me, in example, regardless price. But for the price, next to the DN 14-24 You could still add the DN 35mmf1.2. I'm not at al "A Sigma guy, but I just find it "funny" tho make such a video and not address the obvious elephant in the room. I think people have this lens mistaken, it's not supposed to be for photos. It's supposed to be for the flexibility in creating movies to give an even better perspective over what already exist. It's not supposed to be used as a primary lens but on to enhance an already great presentation.

I'm not really interested in this lens, but I really enjoy watching DP Review. Less than a year ago, I sold my huge Nikon kit and bought a Sony A7R4 and three prime G master lenses: 24 f/1.4 GM, 85 f/1.4 GM, 135 f/1.8 GM. I am not much of a zoom person. Much prefer the look from my prime glass. I tried the 100mm STF lens, but returned it. I like fast glass. The only other lens I'm interested in is that 90mm macro that everyone says is the sharpest glass from Sony.

Great video guys. I have the 12-24 G f/4 And it is simply my favorite lens to use. I do a lot of travel photography and always find it useful. I love pushing it out to 12 mm The G Was already pricey and got even more expensive by putting the huge external filters on the front. Hundreds of dollars just for those. But $3000 for the G master is just outside my budget. I still however would love to see you guys do a comparison of the G and the G master. I’m especially curious about the differences in flare. Because while the G was very well reviewed, to a person, the flare was cited as its biggest downfall, which I agree with. I would also be curious to see a comparison of the sharpness of both lenses at 12 mm.

The full frame Sigma 14-24 f/2.8 is impressive too at less than half the price. The difference between 14mm and 12mm seems negligible but with ultra wide full frame the difference is huge. For me the most impressive ultra wide zoom lens is the Nikon 14-30mm f/4. It doesn't have a bulbous front element which is unique for a 14mm full frame lens lens. The classic bulbous from element of ultra wide lenses is susceptible to scratches. The Nikon 14-30mm can accepts a protective front 82mm filter. The ultra wide lenses one way or another inherently can't offer shallow depth of field so the difference between f/2.8 and f/4 isn't so important. Of course f/2.8 is more bright and requires lower ISO but the advancements in high ISO performance lately are impressive with full frame cameras and the IBIS works better with ultra wide lenses than telephoto ones. That's why nearly all new super telephoto lenses have integrated image stabilization mechanism and don't really on IBIS. Finally the Nikon f/4 is a relatively affordable, small and lightweight lens. It is maybe the only reason I will switch from Sony to Nikon Z mount. Sony e-mount lenses can be used on Z mount cameras without loosing autofocus with the Techart AF adapter. Of course the performance of autofocus is inferior.
