The Sony 28mm f2 is a very affordable little full-frame lens and oh boy is it great for the price. It's light, it's compact, and it has tremendous autofocus. All for just a few hundred bucks!
If you are looking for a little lens that's great for talking head shots yet not too wide, you should really consider the 28mm. In this video I talk about how for anyone just starting out on RU-vid or for making videos, the value for the lens is just hard to beat.

Although you should see if you can get one used first. Save money!

I bought my 28mm f2 way back with my original A7. I'm not into vlogging so tend to use my 55mm f1.8 when I want more bokeh than the zoom on my A7iii can give, and reserve the 28 for when I need a wide view in lower light. I'm now developing an interest in street photography, so I bought an A6700 with the 20mm f2.8, and my lovely old 28mm f2 is suddenly getting a lot more exercise again for it's narrower view on APS-C and it's wider aperture. I'd forgotten how sharp it is, as well as it's quick auto focus. It's small size also works really well with the A6700. Unlike you, I love auto ISO! I use aperture priority and set a minimum shutter speed on either of my Sony cameras: it's great. At a Christmas pageant last week, I was using f5.6 on the A6700 for a deep depth of field and ISO ranged from 1600 to 6400, producing great results.
@thesahdstudio
@thesahdstudio 9 месяцев назад
That's awesome! And yeah that seems like a nice little combo. I do agree auto-iso is fantastic. I love it with a-priority mood as well... just for my talking head stuff I've found auto-iso can mess up the exposure if I'm wearing say a white shirt or something. In those cases I much prefer to set it to a constant but for anything dynamic like you said, I'm team auto-iso for sure!
@kennamorrison8564
@kennamorrison8564 9 месяцев назад
Ah! Yes, I can understand auto ISO not being so great in vlogging. I'm not into that, so it didn't occur to me.@@thesahdstudio

Very unortodox and nice review :) At 5:40 when switching from the kit lens f 3.5 to the 28mm - were you at f2? Because I really couldn't tell the difference. The bokeh looked pretty much the same. I was hoping it would be much more "bokehy"
@thesahdstudio
@thesahdstudio 15 дней назад
Thanks for the comment! To be honest I don't remember but I'm assuming that was the case. It's a very dark room and I mean if you notice the background if I would have done a side-by-side it is more bokehy... It's definitely better overall but yeah it's not as radically different as going to like an f 1.4 or something... Which costs a ton more. It's a great size and great value lens that's better than the kit lens but doesn't always look better in every situation.

The price is too good for such a sweet compact prime. It's perfect for a photowalk with the A7C. Plus, if you want to go a bit wider while out and about, there exists an ultra-wide adaptor you can fit to the front that makes it a 21mm lens. So you can quickly take your shot without changing lenses or worrying about sensor dust.
@thesahdstudio
@thesahdstudio Год назад
That's awesome about the adapter, I didn't know! And you're right, it's just such a good value. I am lens shopping right now but I'll keep this one in the arsenal for sure! Lens size is something I never thought would be important to me but it really is.

Thanks! It's so fun having the kiddos in the video, but now they're in school it doesn't happen quite as often. They love it though. I'll be honest I haven't used the lens in a while... but seeing your comment makes me think I should. It's a great size/weight ratio. I have the 24mm f1.4 which I saved up for always on there but it is a bulky chonker. There's something special about a small versatile unassuming lens that gets the job done.

@thesahdstudio
@thesahdstudio Год назад
It's funny how it's one of those focal lengths that doesn't get a lot of love. I would have liked it a little more if it had a wider aperture but then the price would go up. What's your favorite focal length? Or maybe I should say what's your go to lens?

CUTE. I just had a video pick up some subs and now I'm finally going to start using my A7sii for video. I would like to be able to gimbal it sometimes. My 24mm Nikon adapted lens is not flattering but when I tried the samyang 35mm while holding the camera the frame was too tight. Thought of this lens immediately as a solution.
@thesahdstudio
@thesahdstudio 2 месяца назад
How exciting! Nice job! Yeah I think if you can find this lens used and get it for a cheap price it's a good choice. It can still be a little tight if you are holding the camera but it's doable in a pinch and it's great for on the tripod.

Beautifully explained with comparison along Ruby. I was about to buy 24mm G master just for traveling, food, products and some wide angle landscapes. Luckily I got to know that there's a Sony FE 28mm for nearly 5x lesser price than 24GM. I just bought it and it's my favourite lens, I carry this lens almost for all my travel / motorcycle trips. In my opinion sony 28mm lens is so much underrated. 🙏😀💐

Good review. Look into the Zeiss Batis 25mm/2.0. It's a fraction of the price of the Sony 24 if you buy it used. Of course, it's not a 1.4 like the Sony, but the rendering, colors, and Zeiss pop are quite beautiful.

I have the Sigma 24-70mm f2.8 and I'm happy at 35mm. Tried 50mm and my face looked pretty fat and big, lol. 24mm would make my head look thinner but would get more stuff into the frame that I want to keep out. It's always a matter of what look you're seeking. Great review!

@thesahdstudio Год назад
I'd love to play around with that lens. I might have to get one in the new year! And it's interesting when you say that you get stuff in the frame you want to keep out... that's a good point, and it's hard to find the correct balance. On one hand (in my opinion) you want to really include your audience so it feels like they are there with you, experiencing the environment, but on the OTHER hand, nobody wants to see your messy cables and crap everywhere lol. As always thanks for watching.

@@thesahdstudio You're welcome, mate! Finalizing my Dhofar biting midge documentary film as we speak! Should share it with you when it's done. I would rather suggest you buy Samyang 24-79mm f/2.8. Slightly cheaper, I think slightly faster AF, also Sigma suffers from warm tint that most reviewers don't talk about which puts off your "manual" white balance by around 1,000! So if the lights are set at 5600K you better set your white balance at 4600K on camera + green/magenta tint if present from the light source.

Looking to order one of these to replace my sad, very sad Sigma 30mm f1.4. I really like the image from the Sigma but it's almost as bad as DFD AF at times and it's failed me badly in recent videos. Seems like unless you go with Sony for the lenses the AF just misses a beat here and there. ZV-E10 with the standard crop gets me 42mm FF equivalent and that's perfect in the studio for some talking head footage. Getting Sony to have bad focus is just a sad experience. Still considering selling yours?
@thesahdstudio
@thesahdstudio Год назад
Yes, I would sell mine since I don't really use it now that I have the 24mm. Although the G-master is so big I don't think I would really want to take it on hikes etc... but then, I got myself a tamron 17-28 so, I don't think I really need this little lens anymore. I wonder if the sad state of your Sigma is why the af isn't working? I mean, I had that lens and although I didn't use it much, I felt the af was decent.. But maybe you're right. Yeah the Sony lenses are all top notch and reliable. You really can't go wrong. When you have any non-Sony lens next to Sony lens, side-by-side, and you are wondering which one to get... I'm sure most content creators will say you can't go wrong with the Sony, and that's for a reason. If you're trying to get high quality without spending the high quality budget, this thing lets you get away with.

@@thesahdstudio I'm just trying to make recording easier. Sony was supposed to help me and the ZV-1 is very good. The ZV-E10 however has wasted a lot of my time. I have Viltrox 23 1.4 for aps-c, so I made the same mistake. Depth of field at f1.4 (f2.1 in FF) is to shallow (only 6 inches - 15cm) when I'm 4 feet (1.2m) away from camera. I prefer at least f1.8-2.0 ( about F2.8 in FF) then DoF is 9 inches (22 cm). Recently I'm thinking about Samyang 18 f2.8. I want wide angle for interior shots and in APS-C mode it could work as 27mm f4.0 for talking head. Not greatest bokeh but I prefer more stuff in focus and I don't have to swap lenses. It's super small, light and cheap. In my eyes it strongly competes with Tamron 17-28 f2.8.
