Spot on tutorial that covers multi areas of the metering mode.

Been using Highlight metering a lot on my a7R3 and you are right you do need to use where appropriate. On my a9, I've been predominantly in multi mode and using the exposure comp dial as needed for the given shot. I've used spot here and there as well as highlight. But so far I'm mostly using my a9 for street, wildlife, and sports and with your Aperature mode settings for action or portraits, it works great with the exp com dial. For landscapes and astro, I'm still using my a7R3 and im all manual there and highlight metering mode.

Great tutorial - deep, but well described and well paced. Previously I had assumed spot metering to be “guarantee this part isn’t blown out and f the rest” - I’ll stick to multi moving forward and experiment with spot in the specific ways you describe.

Perfect, on point😊 no nonsense! Looked all over RU-vid for something like this. RU-vid should delete all others and keep this one!

I've been using a combination of spot metering and AEL on the front half press, and tracking auto focus. With front Focus turned off I use back button Focus to get an initial Focus lock on my perch or subject , then slightly move around the image till I get my exposure right and lock it with a front half press AEL Auto exposure lock, then compose my image with the exposure I chose as the tracking stays on the subject. Great video as always!

I've just been referred to this video as someone on talk photography has been getting confused about exposure and metering and I can see why they were getting confused when you say that using manual mode that metering is essentially disabled. I understand that if you're using the old sunny 16 rule then you 'ignore' what the camera is telling you as far as the exposure is concerned, but the metering modes aren't disabled and will still show you what the camera thinks the exposure should be, and this will change depending on what metering mode you're using. I understand that you allude to this in the video, but I just wanted to point out that it isn't quite crystal clear for people who don't have a great understanding. Maybe it would have been better to say that if you're setting/calculating your own exposure then the metering modes are irrelevant. I hope you find this useful, it's a great video overall.

👍Useful info, capably presented, without distracting hype - your vids never disappoint. Love the histogram as rear-view mirror analogy - will keep that in mind. Would like to see a vid that compares highlight exposure mode to zebras - how they relate and interact or contradict. E.g., would changing the zebra value alter the exposure chosen by cam in highlight exposure mode? Until use of exposure compensation becomes second nature, it can be too easy to forget to reset/adjust compensation dial between shots - agree?
