@@silklion7375 I've got the a7siii had to go with the sony 35mm f1.8 coz of the GM focus breathing issue, and no, the a7siii doesn't have focus breathing compensation.
I didn’t actually notice when testing, but I also shot a lot with autofocus and didn’t do much extreme rack focusing. Definitely does look to be an issue though from the other reviews I’ve seen.
@@whoismatt be interesting to see an interview subject relatively close to the camera in AF and see how it behaves. Sony don’t like me so I didn’t get a sample to review. 😞😞😞😞
It's really hard to figure out what system to buy into. I can find pros and cons with all the major brands, but the form factor of these new Sony lenses combined with great eye-af and silent focusing is a BIG plus for Sony.
Your main talking head shot is looking beautiful Matt! Colour contrast is just excellent. Anything in particular you have tweaked lately? Thanks for another great review.
Would you say this lens would be a good buy for a car rig car chase set up?🧐 I’m currently using the 28-75tamron usually I keep it at the 28 just because I don’t like changing the weight of my gimbal while moving at 50-100mph. But 35 I could see my self using . I Wonder if the autofocus would be good...
This may be a silly question but I’m in film school learning so in your slow motion shots are you recording them in slomo 120 fps or are you slowing them down in post? Of so what are you recording in? Anyone can answer this! Thank you!
Great video, I’m thinking of getting one and a Sony a 7C for my first camera set up. I’m thinking this is going to be as close to an iPhone camera as I can get? While being an upgrade. I don’t want the shot to look drastically difference to my audience and I don’t want to have to change my frame or my set up. I just want some better control over the f-stop with some higher quality looking images along the way.
I’m just not sure this is the right way to go because I was looking at a 24, but maybe this will be closer to what my iPhone has been seeing. Only thing is, I think my iPhone crops in on the sensor. Also, I think this gives the illusion that you can bring objects closer to the camera than you really can so I might run into a problem with minimum focus distance.
Hi Matt, I'm about to buy my first A7 IV and I'm in doubt between 24mm 1.4GM, 35mm 1.4GM or 35mm 1.8 all in gimbal. I would like exclusively for weddings and 16 years. I am a bit concerned about focus breathing on the 35mm 1.4 GM. Thank you and greetings from Lima Peru.
Hi Matt, I’m going to buying both the 24 and 35mm GM. My question is, is there noticeable focus breathing on either lens to effect video or is this overblown? How about focus breathing for the Sigma 35mm f1.2 and 1.4 art ? Thanks in advance.
I just bought the 35. Yes. Breathing is a big issue on the lens. Pretty ridiculous amount. And the focus transition is not smooth at all. You can see the background stepping into the new focus distances. I'm pretty annoyed because I feel a bit deceived by videos like this one that paint the lens as being "perfect for filmmakers."
@@orcapodmedia That's not good to hear at all man. I bought the 24mm 1.4gm and I love it. I'm now curious if the breathing issue will be mitigated on the newer cameras like the A7IV and the upcoming Fx30 that have breathing compensation. I wonder if that new Sigma 35mm 1.4 DG DN- the smaller one with the Aperture ring doesn't have as much focus breathing? Thanks for the reply and the information.
I literally held off from purchasing a new Sigma 35mm in case Sony drops a 35mm GM sometime soon.... and woola! Thanks Matt! Can't wait to get this one.
Hey Matt, extreme rack focusing seems to be the difference between perfection as far for video. Is this a deal breaker? This 35mm seems great for photography and ehhhhh for video.Thank you.
The thing is, will Sony send you future lenses if you are too critical of their product? You still have incentive to receive Sony lens to attract viewers to your channel. Not sure if reviews like these are 100% honest. Nevertheless, thanks for showing us the latest stuff from Sony Camera/Accessories
Hey Matt, I just got the Sony A7iv and it came with the FE 3.5-5.6 Lens, but I want to use this new camera for weddings. As of now, I can only afford one good lens and was wondering which one I should buy (FE 24mm 1.4 GM, FE 35mm 1.4 GM, or FE 50mm 1.2 GM), to film a wedding? I would need to use the one lens for the whole wedding! What should I do? Thanks!
hi, I'm confused decided 24mm Vs. 35mm GM, Help me to choose one of them. I want wide angle but I don't really like distortion, due to I'm not a professional photograpgher I want advanced lens and has good autofocus. help me to choose :)
Can someone explain why a filmmaker wouldn’t just buy a versatile 24-70? Wouldn’t that be better for run and gun style filmmaking? Is the only advantage being able to achieve a faster aperture? Legitimately asking - thanks!
Faster aperture is definitely a plus, and one of the biggest advantages of prime lenses like this. Another reason is optics and sharpness. Prime lenses tend to be significantly sharper and have better image quality than zoom lenses. A high-end zoom lens is usually similar image quality to mid-tier prime lens.
It's mostly personal preference. I prefer having to move my feet instead of zoom. The added lowlight performance is vey nice for wedding filmmaking at dark receptions as well.
@@whoismatt thanks, Matt! Reason I ask is I have a Sigma 24-70 2.8 that has served me well. But it makes me wonder if I’m missing something that could be a game changer with purchasing a prime.
Matt, if you can only pick one for Documentary (similar to Wedding shooting I suspect), do you pick the 24 or the 35? This one would be on my b-camera while the 24-104 f4 is on the other.
Hey Matt I received my A7s iii not long ago and looking at the 16-35 F2.8 to enter wedding and real estate videography. Kind of on a budget to start. What would recommend for the first all purpose lens to start? Love the channel and subscribed.
if i already have an sony 24-70mm gm lenses, do i still need to buy these prime lenses ? assume weight is not a factor problem, the extra aperture 1.4 or 1.8 worth the extra money ? or 24-70 can also achieve the same thing. thanks
@@whoismatt thanks for the reply, so u mean my 24-70mm has less bokeh effect than 24mm 50mm 85mm prime ? since I don't own any prime lenses. I don't know the answer.
Thanks Mate for such detailed comparison review, i am comparing Sony 35gm and Sony 35 1.8 ,If I am a video maker and don’t really mind focus breathing issue. Wondering the video images quality gonna make any noticeable difference on FX3 ‘s 4K 10bit ? Consider the resolution is very low on 4K. My key consideration is image quality on video.
I've hear some say, that if you have a camera that can also use crop mode (like the FX3), then just get the 24mm and you can crop in to 35mm. Two lenses in one! What do you say to that? :-)
I bought the Sony 35SEL18 and I find that for everyday video like shooting product or motorcycle walk around I have to stand so far away from the subject I can’t use the lens and always end up using my kit lens. Is there a better lens with stabilization for what I do and will allow me to shoot in small areas or closer to the subject?
I decided to go cheap and get a Rokinon lens 35mm F1.4 AF although there is some downsides to it, but as long as the picture quality is sharp that's all I care about. having a button or aperture ring on the outside is not important to me, and I can deal with the weight because it is a pretty heavy lens. the autofocus and picture quality is really good some people say it's better or almost as good as a Sony Zeiss. I did a few tests with it but as far as long-term test I guess I will find out. so far I'm happy with it I don't think Sony 35mm GM is worth the 1400 price tag when you got a $600 lens thats good too or maybe almost as good I don't know. I would love to see someone do a comparison between those two lens.. another reason why, I got it used on Adorama almost like new for $399 even better couldn't pass that up.. awesome job on the video review Matt.
Honesty the focus breathing issue is blown WAY out of proportion. Regardless, the focus breathing compensation built into the a7iv makes it a non issue. But even with it off, it’s hard to notice in all but the most specific circumstances.
I hope It goes on Sale sometime this year So I can try it one day. :) great review. I like the compact nature of this lens. I don't have 1400$ for this lens. No can do. Wait for a sale or Hope Santa puts one in his bag for me this xmas 🎄.
1:38 min there is a window on the left bottom corner of the screen from wedding. I like the colors of the video. Can u tell me more about it like what is the PP, Lut, color grading etc. Thanks, mate!
I know this not the topic but matt how would I go about upload IPhone 12 Pro HDR video to RU-vid using Premiere Pro (if possible) no longer can do it on iMovie from iPhone app Bc they remove RU-vid upload option.
Hi Matt I hope you are doing good 😀.... Matt can you please give a solution to use ipad as mini screen for live shoot at location... any suggestions on it
For still photos, sure, it's a nice lens. For video though? Seriously?!?! It focus breathes like crazy (one of the worst I've ever encountered) which seriously limits its usability as a lens for video. You don't even mention this issue in your video. That's almost malpractice for something billing itself as a "review". There are better options available for less money.
idk what happened with mine but the video autofocus has been TERRIBLE its super jittery and cant seem to keep fous on a subject - well lit tripod shot not even wide open and it jitters when the persons face turns away or given a side profile
@@whoismatt or and hear me out on this... 24mm is perfectly fine and just take a few steps forward! And stop buying gear instead of improving the craft
Very good job Matt as always! I just wished you mentioned this almost perfect lens has a big flaw for video work and that's focus breathing, Dn't say you can't live with it but I think personally I still prefer the 35 1.8 G for videography considering it's lighter weight and I think 1.8 still can give enough subject separation for most scenarios plus having no focus breathing.
The image is so good but the focus breathing is so bad. It’s really concerning for the G Master line in my opinion. So sharp and punchy though. This lens is pretty solidly a photo lens that looks great in video unless you have moving subjects or need to rack focus. The price is right but that’s a pretty serious trade off when creating video content.
Matt, when did you become British? Grams??? Will you be making a tutorial on how to convert that to Amerikan ounces? LOL. You are great. keep up the great work.
