Wow. No focus breathing, wow. parfocal, wow. sharpness, wow. aperture ring, wow. 5 controls, wow. f2.8, wow. equal to primes, wow. Truly a great len's for anyone. video guys will eat it up. I'm in
I always enjoy all your videos, they are factual, interesting and you do such a great job of explaining both the art and science side of photography. Great to hear this review and that you went straight to the actual capabilities of the glass. Thanks for sharing your knowledge.
You said the 24 GM had was the start of the new linear motor trend seen in more recent lenses, but the 24 GM uses the older Direct Drive SSM system found in the 90mm Macro G, 16-35 GM, and first gen 24-70 GM. The 24 GM does however share the same Linear Manual Focus (LR MF) feature found in newer lenses.
Sony is getting better and lighter with all their GM lenses, even cheaper comparing to RF / Z versions - namely 50 1.2 and 70-200 2.8 GM II (and some they have not releasing yet such as 14 1.8 and 35 1.4 GM). Can’t wait to see 100400GMII!
Thank you for your video. Really appreciate the effort. Mine just arrived today, 3 wks to a month earlier than originally planned. Its really nice and the reduced weight is the first thing you notice. Looking forward to using it.
Finally! Usually you are the only person I watch when a new lens comes out but you were late to the party this time. Thoughts.... not going to replace my 100-400mm. I do like their new glass and what they are doing. Btw... I miss your podcast....
@@njrtech Only if you the only thing you care about is image quality. If you care about portability, cost, minimum focus distance, etc. etc.the answer can be different. Everything photography is a compromise.... Also what with commenting on a person comparing 2 specific lenses and saying "buy 2 lenses instead" . Honestly - that is about as useful as me responding here and saying "Yeah but a 24-70F2.8 , the100-400mm + the 600mm F4 is better than that". Such a weird move dude....
I come from Canon, switch to Nikon because of the D850, loved a number of their lenses as well, then switched about 2 years ago to A7R for its autofocus. I tried the 24GM 1.4, have the 20 1.8, the 200-600 and the tamron 35-150 f2 (love it). A few other things here and there. I have to admit that technologically, Sony is starting to nail everything from the body to the lenses. I still have my Nikon 70-200 FL and am considering to maybe sell it to get this Sony OSS II. I am sure the autofocus will be much better.. and possibly some optical aberrations will be more corrected. But optics is a funny thing.. you speak of the rendering of the lens and for instance for me, the 24GM 1.4 is less good optically than the 20mm 1.8.. but, every photo I took with the 24GM has a special kind of warm / secret look to it. A very special rendering. I went for the 20mm, but I am sure I will come around at some point and buy back that 24GM just for that rendering. Rendering is a lot more than just optics quality and is difficult to measure
Great review Ted, looks like I'm going to be upgrading my Sony 70-200 ! I see you have dry cabinets, how about a video on these, why you might need one, is there an advantage to using one etc. I'm looking at this for my lenses.
Before you said that Sony got on board a designer from Nikon, I thought to myself, gee, Sony is becoming like how Nikon used to be. Aperture rings on modern AF lenses? Even Leica doesn't do that! I think Sony has not forgotten their goal of being the no.1 camera manufacturer. They still need to polish some rough patches but I can see it happening. People are not going to fall for the big fat DSLR trick anymore.
I own this 70-200mm II and it is absolutely incredible rivaling prime lenses at different focal lengths. The reduced weight is a true blessing when shooting professionally for long periods of time. I love all the control it gives me as well as the bokeh smoothness and incredibly fast focus it offers. There is nothing like it from Nikon or Canon. I have owned their offerings in the past and this one beats those hands down.
i want to see a special version of this lens, a gm 2s, where you have an internal 2x tele built in, and your zoom is external. would be my perfect second lens after 16-35 gm :D
CAN SOMEONE PLEASE EXPLAIN WTH THIS MEANS: If you are using a lens with the Optical SteadyShot™ (OSS) feature, then the In Body Image Stabilization (IBIS) or SteadyShot selection of the camera will be unavailable My Sony FE 4.5-5.6/70-300 G OSS lens has a switch on the barrel marked "Optical Steady Shot: On/Off" My A7R4A has an option of turning IBIS (in body image stabilization) on and off. Question: When IBIS (in body image stabilization) is turned on, should the Optical Steady Shot switch on the lens barrel be turned on or off? Note: I have seen statements to the effect that IBIS and lens stabilization should not be used together. Does this apply to the A7R4A ? They work together. Here is the explanation from Sony. ”If you are using a lens with the Optical SteadyShot™ (OSS) feature, then the In Body Image Stabilization (IBIS) or SteadyShot selection of the camera will be unavailable. When both the camera and lens have the feature, the lens stabilization overrides the menu system of the camera and the systems work in conjunction with each other to provide a 5-axis stabilization system. If you connect a lens that does not have the SteadyShot feature or turn off the feature on a lens that does, then the feature selection is available within the camera menu and the camera.”
Unreal results when reviewing the tests you’ve run on other prime lens ! I’m a Believer ! Great review !😀 I like the colors and contrast and flattering rendering of this lens. Better for older folks portraits me thinks. Thanks. The 50 mm 1.2 is a little more unforgiving in this dept.
I am looking for a good lens for wildlife photography and like to be sony lens, please advice which lens is best. Thank you for your advice. I have a A7IV.
I'm torn between this and the 100-400GM. That lens is becoming somewhat dated and I'm wondering if Sony will release an update sometime. This thing looks incredible.
Very nice one. I love astrophotography and interested to buy A7IV if you may guide me I would really appriciate. The problem is A7IV increased the megapixel which is not really good for astrophotography. If I drop down the megapixel from 30MP to 20MP or 12MP(I don't know yet) to take astrophotography, will I get a better image from noise or the noise will be the same as the full megapixels? If the noise as same as full megapixel, I might think about A7iii instead. Looking forward from you. Thank you.
Looking up the specs for the old Tamron SP AF 70-210 mm f/2.8, one of the most popular lenses of the 1990s, the Sony lens is actually substantially lighter, though it is also 22.5 mm longer (and 2 mm narrower). I guess the picture just makes it look massive.
I just received my a7iv and the new 70-200 and it’s absolutely incredible. The lens is designed to keep up with the a1 so the A7iv is no problem at all!
I wish you could go into the design of glass elements and how they work actually. Feels like there’s a lot to explore and understand on how lenses work and how we can make better photography as we know more about these tools! Love your work man! It’s awesome!
@@trevorknoll422 because f8 gives me the proper DOF for portraitures for my work. Specifically using a 80mm with f8 gives me the sharpness that is characteristic with studio portraits and outdoor portraits. Bokah / butter is an obsess gimmick. I get it, it’s got my fix too but got over it when I found my style.
I still envy Canon users... they got a wonderful 70-200 f/4 in such a compact package. Idea for travelling. If only they had a body that would be appealing to me, I'd switch.
The Sony is slightly lighter, has internal zoom, a much shorter zoom throw and takes TCs. The Canon extends when zooming, has a stiff zoom room, long zoom throw, can't take TCs and is more expensive.
@@joe2snj yes I know the specs. Canon’s lens better. RF glass is undefeated. The tele converter argument is pointless. They’re not worth the penalties, slow auto focus, crop, loss of stops etc.
And I shoot Sony. My biggest regret was selling my canon stuff two years ago and buying a A7R4. I’m trying to switch back but I’m losing to much money. :(
@@ApertureViews What RF glass is better than what Sony has to offer? The 85mm f1.2, 28-70mm f2 and 24-70mm f2.8 that's about it. Sony has a lot more glass that is either better than Canon's current options or some that Canon doesn't have full stop. The TC argument might be pointless to you but for many that matters. In fact many people complained about it.
@@joe2snj All of Sony GM stuff is optically inferior to the RF I’m sorry. I will say the 24mm GM is awesome! Apart from that unless you’re referencing ziess or voigtlander Sony glass when stating that Sony has a lot more glass that is better than canon. It’s really not a debate .
