We were very intrigued when Sony invited us to New York for a product launch, but for the first time, we had no idea what we would be looking at. Fortunately, we had a chance to get an early look at the new A6300,the replacement for the A6000, still one of our favourite cameras! Alongside that, Sony also launched their new G Masters series of premium lenses, and we were able to test them on the very demanding A7R II! See what we thought after our hands-on time with this exciting new gear.

This is by far the best coverage of this camera to date. I've seen big sites miss important details these guys point out in this video. And somehow I don't even mind the 20 minute format.

Nice work, guys (especially considering how little access Sony gave us to the near gear)! I totally agree with everything you said. Next time you're in NYC, drop me a note ahead of time and we'll buy you guys a beer. I'm totally going to steal that bit where you pretend to lose your luggage so you can dress up like Hugh Hefner. Brilliant!

Sony is really smart keeping the old cameras on sale, like the RX100, A7 and A6000. These older cameras are still very capable and are a budget friendly alternative for the more advanced newer models.

"The 70-200... First impressions: lighter and smaller than a lot of the competitors lenses on the market". Ummm... Sony G Master Series 70-200 - 1480g, 88mm diameter, 200mm length Canon 70-200mm f/2.8 L IS II - 1490g, 88.8mm diameter, 199mm length Nikon 70-200 mm f/2.8G ED VR II - 1540g, 87mm diameter, 205.5mm length Tamron SP 70-200mm f/2.8 Di VC USD - 1470g, 85.8mm diameter, 188.3mm length So, the Nikon is 60g heavier and 5mm longer, which, at that weight and size, is likely not noticeable and will also likely be trumped by better weight balance and ergonomics of a DSLR body but the Canon lens is basically the same and the Tamron is smaller (by a little) in every measurement. So... who are the "lot of the competitors" with larger 70-200 stabilized lenses? I love you guys but c'mon...
@TheCameraStoreTV

+Jonathan Brady I must have incredibly sensitive hands Jonathan. In all seriousness though we appreciate you pointing that out. We didn't bring a scale or measuring tape with us to the Sony event but the minute you see it and pick it up it just seems to be more compact and lighter. In fact it was unanimously agreed by many of the press there so we must all have very sensitive hands. Chris@TCSTV
@jonathanbrady2013
@jonathanbrady2013 8 лет назад
+TheCameraStoreTV I think it's probably confirmation bias at play. People constantly talk about lighter and smaller with mirrorless cameras and so it's stuck in their heads and it warps reality/perception. Conversely, they talk about heavier and larger with DSLR's and that too warps reality/perception. I imagine if you were at a Canon/Nikon/Tamron convention and picked up one of the lenses above, you'd probably think it was heavier than the Sony because you EXPECT it to be heavier. You can thank the media now. We can ALL BE INFLUENCED when BLASTED with non-stop coverage (and accolades) for a certain product/line (mirrorless, in this case). Might you agree that, given the size and weight of the Sony 70-200 f/2.8 vs say... the Canon 70-200 f/2.8L IS II, that based on ergonomics alone, it might be more comfortable to shoot with a Canon DSLR and their lens vs a Sony A7 series and their lens?
@StylinRed

+Jonathan Brady so what you're saying Brady, is that the 70-200 is lighter and smaller than a lot of the competitor lenses... ;)
@jonathanbrady2013
@jonathanbrady2013 8 лет назад
+StylinRed mmm... no. I don't think 10 grams is perceptible or significant at that weight. It's 2/3 of 1% (.67%) difference from one to the next. 1mm is also not perceptible or significant at that size. The only lens that someone could reasonably say that the Sony may be lighter and smaller than a competitor is the Nikon version. The Nikon version is 4% heavier and 2.75% longer. But even then, I'd call "B*** S***".

You guys have gotten jaded by all the new tech. I start like most on pentex k 1000 manual camera. I didn't have IS, Auto or touch screens. You had to be stable handed it taking picture in low light. Since all that came out everyone can't live with out it. Even me, but I make this camera work for me. I'm training my body to learn how to stay as stable as I can. Almost like a sniper. Slow down my body, my breathing and my trigger finger. A lot my my blur shots come from my heavy hands and fingers pressing down hard on the shutter instead of easing in on the button. Just got and altapro tripod and my shot are AMAZING! Just need to add a mono pod and I'm good to go. So slow your roll down and even you can do AMAZING things with this camera.

24 megapixels is more than enough. No, I will not get into print sizes or anything like that. But back in 2013, lets say, everyone seemed to be gunning for the Canon 5D Mark 3. That has less than 24. When I purchased my A6000, that was one of the things I considered. A 5D mark 3, albeit missing some features, in a small body. Great review guys.

I knew it was coming but like I said no rush for it as the A6000 for my along with the NIKONS are all I need to be honest. It begs the question if I have not got a A6000 do I get the newest camera the A6300?? people have money to burn and more than likely will jump to the newest one, but I will do it one day but no interest as of yet. I can already see the A6000 prices dropping already loads of used sites advertising them for around £299. To me I am tempted getting another A6000 carry two of my lens great !!! But the nerds did know it was coming, stick to the best camera you already got your eyes and then fine tune the camera skills .....
@tyroney2
@tyroney2 8 лет назад
Sounds like you have your priorities straight, unlike most people (including me at times). I waited for the a6000 to drop to $350 (refurbished) and I've used mostly Nikon and Canon lenses. I'd love the a7rII but can't justify the price. I went with the a6300 because I shot a lot of video and I want to learn how to grade S-Log 2 and 3 (as well as shoot better 4K). But never spend money just because something is the latest and looks super cool. We've already hit a point in camera technology that an a6000 will never be obsolete (if you think of it as a capable tool to capture images). We'll be told in a roundabout way that it's no longer capable, but it's better than film ever was (mostly,sorta) and improvements from here on out will be more and more incremental luxuries than necessary features. (Unless you need 4K video I tell myself.)

As you said I'm really disappointed at the lack of In Body Image Stabilization and a fully articulating touch screen. I shoot a lot with low shutter speeds, (can handhold 1/15 sec without VR), and the IBIS was my most wanted feature for this new camera. But nevertheless I'll be ditching my Nikon D7100 to get the a6300 once it's out.

After many years of experience on Nikon (F70, D80, D90, D7000, D7200,Panasonic X9200 Camcorder) I decided to sell all the gear and get something less weight for photos and filming in one body. I chose to go for mirorless, because they are more compact and lighter. After several searches and testing some cameras i had to choose between Sony A6300 and Panasonic GX8. It was hard because every camera has its advantages and disadvantages, both cameras are very good and they have photo and video quality (4k) very good in comparison with other mirorless in the same price segment. Number of available lenses is a big decision factor while choosing your interchangeable lens camera. When we look at the available lenses for these two cameras, we see that Panasonic GX8 has an advantage over Sony A6300. The Panasonic offers a much larger array of lens options from Panasonic, Olympus and other third parties, on the other hand there are only 50 lenses for Sony A6300's Sony E (NEX) lens mount and they are ridiculously expensive. ISO range of the Sony A6300 is more broad and another biggest advantage is the larger sensor area compared to the Panasonic GX8 43 sensor. More ISO will sure help you get neat and clean night-shots without noise banding or color noise, Sony getting a full stop better performance due to the sensor. Dual IS in Panasonic GX8 is un-comparable, Panasonic becomes the world first company to feature Dual IS in a camera system, the Panasonic GX8 comes with built in sensor shift IS mechanism and when you add a OIS lens in the camera, the camera IS system sync with the Lens based IS system to give you ultimate result, Sony A6300 doesn't have this feature so you have to buy a lens with optical stabilization feature.The GX8 has a better EVF, touch screen, touch focus, and fully articulated screen; the Sony A6300 has none of those But in the end, the ratio of quality and price made me decide in favor of Panasonic GX8 Sony A6300 (998$) + Sony Vario-Tessar T FE 16-35mm f/4 ZA OSS (1248$) = 2246$ ,weight - 518gr. body+ 404gr. lenses = 922gr. Panasonic GX8 (997$) + Panasonic Lumix G X Vario 12-35mm f/2.8 Asph (697$) = 1649$ , weight - 487gr. body + 305gr. lenses = 792gr. We have a difference of 597 $ With the difference of $ 597 can buy more accessories for the camera but what I found more interesting and useful is - ikan Beholder MS1 3-Axis Motorized Gimbal Stabilizer (599$) or Big Balance Gibbon GN3 3-Axis Handheld Gimbal (600$)
@MannyOrtizphoto
@MannyOrtizphoto 8 лет назад
I think the 24-70 not having IS isn't a big deal. Most people will be using it with pro bodies like a7ii/a7rii that provide IS in body. (Same can't be said with canon/Nikon)

I love the lengthy reviews of theCamerastore RU-vid channel. At last Sony mirroless cameras compete directly with Nikon Canon with the same most popular zoom 24-70 f/2.8 and 70-200 f/2.8 lenses for dSLR users. Now only primes with f/1.2 are needed by Sony for the gap to be covered. The NP-FW50 battery is not a real problem. Even dSLRs have problem with battery when you shoot only with live view. 4K doesn't needs full frame sensors,APS-C or even smaller is adequate. I think that a6300 is the cheaper S-Log camera in the marker. S-Log is more important than 4K and I am happy that amateurs like me will have proper Dynamic Range in their video. The price of a6300 is too high but like its predecessor a6000 the price will drop 40% next year. Sony mirroless cameras are changing faster than dSLR ones and have faster depreciation. The three new lenses are definitely not made for the Sony a6300 . They are full frame for the a7 series. Simply Sony combined two announcements in one.
@stevey500
@stevey500 8 лет назад
I think one of the biggest selling points of the a6300 over my a6000 ( if B&H details are correct ) is that it is POWERED through the microUSB port, not just able to be charged. This makes 10+ hour time lapses way more feasible rather than using my rigged-up battery DC coupler that I've been using for my a6000 for extended time lapse shooting. Also, weather sealing. Boom
@TheCameraStoreTV
@TheCameraStoreTV 8 лет назад
+stevey500 That's been a great feature with all the latest Sony releases. Now they just have to include the time-lapse feature for free, without making you buy the app. Jordan @ TCSTV
@stevey500
@stevey500 8 лет назад
+TheCameraStoreTV That, I entirely agree with! I don't understand why make that an option rather than an out-of-box feature. Sony has also ignored all of my emails and feedback about including an instant option to disable the LCD on-the-fly from the time-lapse app instead of having to exit the app and then dig deep into settings to disable the LCD and switch to EVF-only mode to avoid wasting power during shoots every single time I want to start a time lapse shoot. This makes framing and setting up a time lapse shot way more complicated than it needs to be. My pentax bodies by default killed the LCD at the beginning of a time-lapse shoot.

The next Olympic games will tell us if we are there. If we see on the sidelines photographers with mirrorless, we then will know that the Canon/Nikon era is about to shift. Until we notice that, we can only pretend that we are in a state of - slow - transition. But one thing is sure, just the idea of not having to travel on a plane with a 300mm or worse, a 400mm/200-400mm lens is one that makes me smile.

Now I already have a Canon 30D with some L lenses that I was hoping to upgrade to the 80D but once I saw that it didn't have 4K video I decided to buy the Sony a6300 since I needed a good camera for my trip to Europe in May 2016. And I'm glad I did buy it it's so much smaller and lighter then the 30D that I took to my last trip to Europe and the photos from this a6300 at high ISO 3200-6400 are amazing when compared the the 30D even at 1600 ISO and so is the 4K video at low light.

Guys, TheCameraStoreTV, I appreciate your level-headed look at this camera and your insights, your honesty about it is welcome, that's what I prefer from reviewers, honesty! We know when other reviewers are playing-down the negatives and fluffing-up the meager positives. IMO, clearly Sony still hasn't come to the party AFAIC, just drip-feeding us, that's all they're doing; quite disappointing the way Sony is carefully juggling the feature-set and spec to keep us in a certain position. All about money, yeah we know that, but i'm over it, the time has come for full-blown video spec in these cameras. For starters, we need 10bit 4:2:2 in-camera, anything less than that is just pathetic really, not worth the time-of-day, and we need the option for higher mpbs data-rate, plus we need 5-Axis stabilization, and a much better standard lens with the a6300. Truth is, all things considered, the a6300 is a flop IMO, same old garbage, only incremental refinements, but ultimately token-gesture stuff. Without proper stabilization we're effectively screwed. What am I talking about? The IBIS on Sony cameras is inadequate and quite woeful, and the Sony implementation of 5-Axis stabilization is atrocious, very inadequate, bordering-on unusable. You don't believe me? Go check the following video here at RU-vid and see what I mean. Olympus is blowing Sony off the planet in this department... "5-axis stabilisation compared: Olympus OM-D E-M1 vs Sony A7 mark II" Since the video-quality in the a6300 is only 8bit 4:2:0 and without 5-Axis stabilization, and the FHD Video is only 50mpbs, why should I bother with it??? The new "Olympus Pen F" gives world-class 5-Axis stabilization, 70mbps ALL-I video, and a much better standard lens. I'm taking my money over to Olympus. When Sony stop screwing-around or playing games, then i'll take a look, but the way things are going, it seems like it will be a long time before Sony wakes-up, oh and that's before we mention the price of their new G lens.. ROFL, is Sony serious??

The X-AVC S is really pretty good on the a6000. Dial down saturation by -3, contrast by -3 and sharpness by -2. You'll have a lot more room to mess with quality in post. Not 4K, but whatever.

whats different from the a6000 you ask? A6300 has vs a6000 Better evf 2.4m vs 1.4m Fastest evf refresh rate: 120fps No lag in shooting at 8fps Magnesium body vs plastic 120fps full HD vs 60fps Full pixel readout 4k Weather sealing vs none Level Guage is back Silent shutter vs none 425 af points vs 179 Probably can af Canon lenses like the a7r2 (we will see) Faster auto focus Also there's this: "the ability to support full live-view continuous shooting on the Tru-finder or LCD screen at up to 8 frames per second, ultimately producing a real-time shooting experience that combines all the benefits of an electronic viewfinder with the immediacy of a through-the-lens optical viewfinder."

Why don't you buy the a5100- it has a touchscreen. Do you really rely on the eye piece? Most people that want a touchscreen the most don't look through the viewfinder.
@ShermanMR2
@ShermanMR2 8 лет назад
+Tyler Breeden A touchscreen is another tool in the camera to manipulate camera settings, menu settings and so on. I do use my EVF so the 5100 won't work for me. Taking pictures using an iPhone is such a wonderful experience using the touchscreen, the only negative is picture quality compared to a a DSLR type camera. It seems like it would've been easy for Sony to put a touch screen on this camera it's just a shame that they didn't.

Really enjoyed the info on the A6300 thanks guys. I've got the A6000 and the IS and audio limitation are my biggest draw as I really want to combine photography and videography into one at an enthusiast level. Just wanted to clarify that it does have a 3.5mm jack to use external mics that are 3rd party? And just no headphone socket to listen in on the audio? 4K recording is a big draw also for me as it saves from getting the AX100. Which lens do you recommend to open up for video recording vs the 2x crop you mentioned? Thanks!

Hey Guys great review! I appreciate your insight. I am a Canon shooter doing still/video and am moving to Sony this year. I like that I can use all my L glass with Sony. I am purchasing the A7RII first and think I may go with the A6300 as a back up body. At a $1,000 price point the A6300 looks amazing. I would be able to sell all my Canon bodies and jump into the mirrorless game.

My issue with Sony is still the lens system. It natively tops out at a 70-200... It's really not a good wildlife camera until it gets at least a solid 300mm option. I tried an adapter in store, found it bulky and cumbersome plus the auto focus did not work.. I have zero interest relying on manual focus (my eyes just can't anymore, no matter how good the viewfinder assists are) and want solid AF. Sony instead seems interested in just repeatedly giving us 24-xx zooms.. Not to mention affordable quality lenses instead of over a grand for every lens. Sony's support and such is still subpar from what I've heard too.

The a6300 needed to have image stabilzation and a touch screen
@techmaester
@techmaester 8 лет назад
+Wayne Carter What if you have a budget phobia or want something even better in value for most purposes? Try comparing the a7S II against Panasonic's LX100. You may be very surprised that difference in value to performance and image quality ratio could have left you with enough for another big vacation. (To be fair, the LX100 is not weather-sealed, and has no microphone input. Its lens with f1.7 is rare as diamonds in the camera world, and a lens like that on a Full-Frame camera might as well be valued against a used car.) That being said, the a6300 and a7S II may be great for sports in low-light or for forensic photography, but the LX100 is plenty good enough for concerts and ballgames in any lighting conditions as far as video goes, but for photography, you will probably not get great results, but most cameras at its $900 original value in a somewhat compact body will be much blurrier and noisier, which is remarkable considering that the LX100 is not meant to be mentioned in professional camera rivalry. I would not mind having a6300, which I was considering, but I already have the a6000, and the image quality is too over-processed and soft. Carl-Zeiss is too expensive for results I have done better with a LUMIX brand. (It is easy to know when you take the test work into Photoshop.) Just one thing though I don't like about Panasonic and the new a6300 is mediocre RAW quality. You can't expect a camera under $2,000 to feature uncompressed RAW, as you have to use a dedicated camcorder for videos over half an hour per clip. European tax law or trade standards, which I find ridiculous but that is how technology is that we as consumers have no control over. To sum this up, the sensor is not the culprit, but the lenses are too expensive for the slightly disappointing sharpness and good-not-great performance that does not do the body justice. As far as UI goes, Panasonic and Sony have improved, but having no touch screen on these cameras is probably because it is much easier to use the camera the way we have always operated it. It is so much easier to use an external keyboard and mouse with a tablet or laptop. Touch screens with a virtual keyboard is just not what the doctor of ergonomics ordered. What haven't we learned from painful finger experiences from much Blackberry use? Then again, it would be nice to have a touch screen for those who want it, just as you could disable or enable it. If you can disable the movie button, then you should have the option to turn touch screen on or off.
@Yates__
@Yates__ 8 лет назад
techmaester guy in the camera shop the other day said that the sony a7 range uses the same in body stabilzation as the olympus... touch screens certainly aren't expensive. i'm guessing the stabilization costs more.

+Ben Whoever what they didn't mention is that the a6300 can use Sony A-mount lenses with the LA EA3 (NO SLT like the LA EA4), and still have all 425 AF points. This is a huge improvement. Also, with Metabones + Canon EF lenses, you still get fast AF (yes, ALL 425 AF points).

@RyoHazuki224

Yeah it is a small bummer that the A6300 doesn't have IBIS, but if they had included it I'm sure the body size would have increased slightly. That's just my guess in thinking that internal stabilization requires proper internal mechanism to move the sensor to keep it stable, and with the body compactness of the A6000 and A6300, there's simply no room for that mechanism. Again it's just my guess I'm no engineer and have no idea on what space tolerances such a mechanism would require. Still, those other features like improved sensor, improved auto-focus, higher res viewfinder, 4K and S-Log, and 120fps 1080p video, expanded ISO... this all adds up to one hell of a camera for a thousand bucks! And months ago I predicted that if Sony ever did bring out the successor to the A6000 that it would be about $1000, given the price points of the recent RX10 and RX100 updates.
