Dear Sir : I have always admired your capacity to cover on a traight and forward way this kind of reviews. I'am not a photographer, just an architect involved in photography for hobby purposes. Your approach and comments are quite accurate to my understanding. Your english, pronunciation and speed is perfect for my understanding, I'm not a native english speaker, I'am Chilean. I can understand you clearly without turning on the subtitles on screen. Last thing : The way you explain all this technical stuff is amazing, you are miles away of being boring, don't ever change!!!!!!

Like Sony's intro says..."Beyond Basics". The A7III is their "Basic" Pro model, The A1 is their Super Model, The A7SIII is their Super Video Model...What more can you ask for in a great do it all camera for both Pros and Enthusiasts who are not making thousands of dollars per gig and who just want the best tools for creating beautiful images and videos? I think we're all getting too spoiled, and it started with the A7III, now everyone is expecting leaps and bounds at every new product release. Sony has forced the camera industry to provide us with exceptional products, regardless of manufacturer...Let's just enjoy! Great video from Ted as Usual.

As always, a good run thru from Ted without the breathless hype that's all too common these days. This looks like a very worthy successor to the 7-iii, and for someone needing a big jump up from a APS-C or 1st/2nd gen Sony, this looks solid. It's not "perfect" and doesn't have "everything" but don't forget that this level of Sony body isn't trying to do-it-all perfectly...it's trying to be an affordable balance between the top end cameras and pricepoint. That said, I won't be swapping my A7-iii for this because a new body isn't the barrier holding me back from creating more good photos or video.

Hi there Am primarily a phone photographer lol, but with that said, am thinking in getting my first camera to start taking photography more seriously. I really like this camera and i really like the tamron 35 to 150 f2.0 to f2.8. My main interest is landscape photography and wildlife photography, being an avid outdoorsman myself, spending time camping, canoeing or just hiking around is one of my favourite things to do. I know that as a beginner i should consider maybe something different, but in your opinion, do you think that will be a good camera and lens combination for someone like me or should I go for something more affordable and later on get something better. Great Review. Im a newbie moving away from my Canon 90D (APSC crop) and have a crap ton of lenses for it. What cameras pack the best punch in terms of lenses? I had GH5 prior and loved the small lenses, will you use GH6 more when it comes out? My big questions are which to buy based on which has the best (lowest price best value pro lenses) - GH6, Canon R6, Sony A7IV?

*Finally, someone who mentioned zoom calls lol.* How much better do you think the A7IV ($3990) is over the A7c ($2200 AUD)? I’m looking to start making RU-vid videos and will likely be forced to work from home now so zoom is my best option. Can the A7C do zoom calls the same as the A7IV? Or do you need a capture card etc? Also, just to confirm, you can do 1080p30 on the zoom calls correct (I think on your example it was 720p30). How is the Sony mic, does it pick up a lot of echo? I’m deciding between a Shure Mv7 and the Sony mic. I like the shure because it doesn’t get echo and has a nice deep sound quality.

I think, it is one of the best option to complement the set up for a filmmaker who works with the A7SIII. I really hope these unique features are in a firmware update on the a7SIII. - Focus breathing compensation - Focus mapping - The EyeAF updates - And the shutter closes when changing lenses. These would be a reasonable update request of a camera that ‘should’ have these features. Other than that, I’m at the top of the a7IV waiting list at my favourite Toronto Camera retailer. What a great B cam for the a7SIII, and a beautiful stills camera for a day of exploration. Highbred goodness for this price range. Well done Sony!!

I am quite sad this camera does not have a stacked cmos sensor and does not have zero blackout. I was also hoping for the quick burst thing from the RX100 VII (but with a bigger buffer). For me (a very much photo-only shooter) this is not super compelling. Glad I didn't wait for it (I got the A7R3 for $2K back in Dec 2020). The 25% price jump is a bit of a shame. It's definitely not going to be the best bargain in photography like the A7 III was. I think the A7C is going to be the "Entry Level" camera now....

Wish it did 10fps full raw with no shutter lag/drag. It would be the perfect camera for me. Put this sensor in the A9 III & I would make the switch to Sony. But for $2500, it is a good deal compared to what's on the market. Fills the gap for mp's that is wanted by many also.

The α7 IV's sensor, not a _stacked_ design, lacks inbuilt memory chips, RAM [1]. So its nearly 40% rise in resolution to 33 MP-from the α7 III's 24 MP-slows the sensor readout [1]. Seemingly, the α7 IV's processor-which is α1's BIONZ XR-fails to offset the slowdown. The α9 II has the α9's 24 MP _stacked_ sensor, whose inbuilt RAM speeds sensor readout [1,2]. The α9 sensor, a 2017 innovation, inaugurated 20 fps and silent shooting of fast action with little image warp, but apparently was optimized toward high readout speed, not toward low readout noise, why α9 and α9 II lack ISO invariance and thus have maximal dynamic range lower than α7 III's [2,3,4]. Dated 2021, α1's 50 MP stacked sensor offers 30 fps and ISO invariance [1,5]. 1) Richard Butler, "Why the speed of Stacked CMOS is key to Nikon's pro mirrorless camera", _DP Review,_ 8 Mar 2021. 2) Carey Rose, "Sony a9 II review", _DP Review,_ 19 Aug 2020. 3) Rishi Sanyal, "Sony a9: more speed, less dynamic range", _DP Review,_ 18 May 2017. 4) Rishi Sanyal, "Sony a7 III dynamic range and high ISO improve over its predecessor", _DP Review,_ 17 Mar 2018. 5) Rishi Sanyal, "Analysis: New Sony a1 sensor offers class-leading dynamic range, along with high-speed and high-resolution", _DP Review,_ 9 Mar 2021.

@@oasean Thanks. Some great detailed info. I didn’t realize the A9-2 sensor was stacked. But I am surprised it doesn’t have good ISO performance in this day & age. If I make the switch to Sony, ( for the focus system & video) maybe the R3 or R4 will be the compromise in my price range. What ever I purchase , if Sony, needs to play well with the 200-600 lens. Otherwise it might be the Canon R5. Thanks for the great detailed camera info !

@@thomastuorto9929: The α9 II, a sports camera, has excellent ISO performance [1]. The α7 III, too sluggish for a sports camera, had leading ISO performance [1,2]. Canon R5's sensor, conventional instead of stacked, enables a fully electronic shutter that is up to 20 fps but is more limited than Sony α9 II's when shooting fast action [3]. - 1) Carey Rose, "Sony a9 II review", _DP Review,_ 19 Aug 2020, sec 5 "Dynamic range" 2) _DXOMark_ website, _/Cameras/Compare/Side-by-side/Sony-A7-III-versus-Sony-a9-II___1236_1346_ 3) Richard Butler, "Why the speed of Stacked CMOS is key to Nikon's pro mirrorless camera", _DP Review,_ 8 Mar 2021

@@oasean Thanks again. Didn’t’t realize a camera that wasn’t,t ISO invariant would have good iso performance so I looked up the definition. It makes sense that a lower map sensor ( especially from Sony) would have good iso performance. I would like a little more resolution than the A9 , hence my first comment. The R5 would be plenty for me. Actually, 10-12 FPS without no shutter inperformance( is that even a word) would be plenty for me. If my pockets had no bottom, I would of already purchased the A1 / 600f4 combo plus any other desired lenses. Budget makes me a compromiser!

@@thomastuorto9929: To my regret, Sony seemingly marginalizes mechanical shutter-the main drawback of the α7 IV, in my view-whereas Canon's R5 indeed regains a lot there.

Poor quality back panel, 5fps RAW, crop in 4k. Etc if reviewers lavish praise on this relatively tame upgrade it's only by sheer brand bias. Don't get me wrong, not a bad cam in the slightest. Just not the revolution it's predecessor was.

Unfortunately there is nothing for photographers here which can justify switching from a7m3, which was a quantum leap from a7m2 and singlehandedly killed the DSLR. There are even deal breakers like the flip-out screen. How do you use this in the wind on a tripod or if you want to quickly shoot from the waist? Touch menu really? There are 13 customisable buttons on a7m3 - I don't go in the menu for months. There is nothing really new which leverages the mirrorless technology. No improvement in silent shooting, most probably the same slideshow when @10fps, the same lag between pressing the shutter and the picture. This yet an other video feature with the focus map can be extended to group shots where the camera can calculate the needed aperture so there is enough depth for every face to be in focus but still blur the background - who here has not franticly turned the frond dial going from f1.4 to f5.6 when someone says "I'want to be in the picture too." No, we get an other customisable wheel - this is not a camera it is a fighter jet cockpit. Preset focus position for landscape of product photography. Need more?

I guess the video features are where there is/was room to improve. Stills wise, cameras are bottlenecked at the sensor tech- all the other stuff is mostly window dressing to sell cameras I guess.

I think that the nearly 40% increase of resolution from 24 MP to 33 MP is gimmicky, a convenient way to increase sales but, to my great disappointment, impair the camera for shooting action.

I have A7RIII 10 FPS and this one was a mistake on Sony end not adding @ list 15 FPS, up to 10 FPS but compressed Raw only . 2500.00 really?? My Fuji S10 does 30 FPS with a small crop and 1k camera.

Ok this might be the one.. Looking to go full frame from Olympus and thinking Sony because of the glass.. The only thing that stopped me pulling the trigger so far is the ergonomics - the Oly em1mk2 just feels beautiful in the hand with bullet-proof construction but I guess that's something I'll have to live without :( I guess my one question if anyone has an answer - should I go a7R3 or a74? I'm only interested in stills but still early in my photography, so not sure what I'll be taking pictures of.. At the moment - mainly cityscapes :(

I'm late to reply so maybe you already made a decision, but as a A7R3 owner of 3 years who is going to be selling to replace it with an A74, unless you think you may benefit from the improved eye-autofocus of the A74, the price difference is probably not worth it. The difference in MP between the two (42 vs 33) is only relevant if you plan on making big prints. That said if that's a big concern, the A7R4 (61MP) may be the way to go if its in your budget. Also consider that the R3 is almost 6 years old at this point, so if you plan on keeping it for 3 or 4 years, it will still be a great camera, but will be absolutely left in the dust when it comes to specs and new features and tech that we don't even know will exist yet. For me, as the A74 is just 1 year old, if I wait for the A75 in ~3 years, I will be able to cover about 70% of the cost of upgrading versus _maybe_ 20% or so if I keep the R3 until then.
