Great comparison. For ages I was determined to get a Z6 II or Z7 II, but then I randomly found an amazing deal on an A7 R3 and went for that instead. What I found is that many of the things that were putting me off from a Sony full frame really didn't turn out to be a big deal for me: 1. Lack of touchscreen/bad menus. Once you've set the camera up how you like it, you very rarely need to use the menus. The Sony is so customizable, I can control everything with just a single rear dial and the customisable buttons. 2. Handling. I hated it in the shop, but after using the camera properly for a day or so, I find it completely fine. Amazing how quick your hands can adapt 3. EVF/screen quality. The EVF is great, absolutely love it. The screen could be brighter, but I almost always use the EVF anyway. I would say, having a fully rotatable screen would be handy for shots from more extreme angles I think the Nikon would have frustrated me with its lack of customisable buttons, which I didn't realise before watching your videos!

The a7iii is honestly my perfect camera, but I wish canon would make something comparable at a similar price so I can stay within their ecosystem. The eos R almost did it for me, but the slow burst rate and lack of uncropped 4k and slow-mo are deal breakers for me. Excellent video as always!

I like how you mention the color differences between the original Nikon z6 and the 6ii. I’ll have to look at that . I noticed the 6ii has a preferable color tone to the Nikons 7. The 7 being colder while the 6ii , as shown here, has a lean towards magenta shades colors which looked nice ok the flower . Also the sky in one of the photos was nicer ok the Nikon whole the Sony was a flatter blue . Have you tried the different versions of the Sony iii? I wonder what the color differences are for them . Frankly to me color is the main thing I love about photos so it matters to Me more than other features I realize. I think photoshop also can double megapixel count? I haven’t tried this myself but I did see someone compare the Nikon 6ii vs 7 and it seemed to work nice while also preserving the color palette of the 6ii. Iv seen people try to match colors on a Sony iii and Iv and it doesn’t work. At the end of the day the difference in the sensor can’t be changed . So for me I’m trying to choose camera based off of preferred built in color more then anything, though I do want something that is good in darker scenarios . I have the canon m50 , when I bought it it was the best choice financially and with decent options but I might upgrade

Thank you for putting to bed the a7iii green/cold shift color tones argument. I totally followed that thought process based on forums and i/ii users. So glad to see the a7iii producing noticably nicer colors than it's predecessors. This was my biggest jumping point on the Sony. I will no longer be pursuing the Z6ii and am starting the hunt for an a7iii!

Thanks for the balanced comparison of these cameras! One thing to note, is that all AF-S lenses from the Nikon F-mount family are compatible with the Z series, you just need the FTZ adapter. That means there are around 240 lenses (from Nikon and third party) which will work with the Z series cameras. For someone moving from a Nikon full frame SLR (like me) that's a big bonus!

I prefer Nikon any day over Sony. Much better ergonomics, usability, better build quality and does even have focus stacking.

Thanks for the comparison. I am a A7C owner and I am very much enjoying shooting with it. At 11:11 you said that the new menu system is available for the A7iii but I think you meant the A7siii. For a moment I was happy and thought the new menu system is coming to older Sony cameras.

I like both cameras but I’d probably still get the Sony because of the autofocus and lenses. I switched from Nikon to Sony because the Z lenses cost too expensive and there are no third party alternatives yet.

2021 and the A7III is still the camera to beat, especially for the price.

-Great review! On the Z6 IBIS smoothness: for video I always use SPORTS mode, that will not try to compensate when you are panning. This may be worth trying.

Did you ever get a chance to try the samyang 35 / 1.8 for E mount? I'm not sure if I should spend the extra on the Sony 35 1.8, or get the Samyang. Great video as always! Your intro has a feeling of home to it for me. It is connected to a soothing video, which helps to wind down after a stressful day. You don't just provide information, you also provide calmness.

Good video as always, this is a question more than a comment, I currently use Fujifilm (X-T4) and have no intention of switching, but I am considering the Sony A7-III as a second system for many reasons (i.e., focusing and battery life), but I don’t want to buy it now and find out that next month Sony comes out with an A7-IV, can you tell if based on Sony’s history that is likely to happen in the near future? Be well and stay safe.

All in All, the Sony still has an advantage in quite low priced Objectives WITH Autofocus and by beginning of 2023 it is traded far cheaper than the Z2. Nikons Price for the 24-105 f/4 is what destroyed it when I compared both, as I wanted that optics. Including current Sony Cashbacks, it was 2099 for an A7III/SEL24-105 f4.0 OSS bundle for me, compared to 2799 for the Nikon. While I would have loved the Nikons better Display and Viewfinder; The price difference AND the far superior Autofocus of the Sony made the decision for me. Not seeing my pic properly on the display might be disappointing; But fucking up the picture because the Nikon focuses the dogs ears instead of face, or focusing slightly off during sport photos... Wasn't worth it for me. With my full Objectives wishlist, the Sony goes about 1000 bucks cheaper. Not counting a 400mm; Which is 900 Bucks for Sony (Sigma) and 3000 (!) for the Nikon. Meh. Sure, i could use the Nikons larger Bayonet for Adapters... But that would make the Autofocus even worse. For Studio fotography, I would have chosen the Nikon. For Party, Sports, Wildlife and so on... The Sony still is the better choice in my opinion.

Before I purchased the A7iii I tested the Z6 gen 1 in 2019 and it was an nice camera. It offered 10 bit externally and the Sony did not. I wasn't a big deal for me. I also felt the Z6 had better build quality. The main reason I passed on the Z6 were the lack of lenses. I refused to invest in a main system based on promises of upcoming glass. I understand it was a new system but for me the lack of a 24-70 f/2.8 at the time killed it for me. Fast forward to today and they have a great 24-70 f/2.8 but Sony E mount has two 24-70mm and one 28-75mm. If I were buying today I would still take my current A7iii/Sigma 24-70mm setup over the Z6ii/Nikkor 24-70mm considering the $1300 saving.

i have nikon d5300 and want to change to FF. Can't choose z6 ii or a7iii. I have 50mm 1.8G from nikon and i love it. But i don't know if it would be great too with adapter ftz. So 1.Buy z6ii and keep 50mm 1.8g with adapter ftz or maybe just buy a7iii and buy sigma 50mm 1.4? What you think? The more I read, the more I wonder :(

Nice review dude! I'm actually using a Nikon Z6II and I'm a bit burned with Nikon, I shoot mostly wildlife and the AF speed is too low in most of the cases, also the Eye AF fails a lot (I mean, it's great showing you the eye detection but when shoot the foto the focus point moves and the face goes out of focus), also i feel limited by the lens selection for amateur users... For that i'm thinking of selling all my Nikon gear (which is not a lot) and go for a used A7III, with Sony 200-600mm and one 50mm f1.8 and 28mm f2... Do you think I'm going to notice AF speed for wildlife between Z6II and A7III? I'm not considering nowadays the A7IV because the costs of changing systems and buying new lenses is too much but... starting with A7III and in the future selling it and buying the A7IV maybe it's the right option for me Keep doing those great videos!

Really enjoyed this video - thank you. I've had Nikon SLR/DSLRs for years but didn't enjoy the A6 when I tried it. So I bought X-T3 which is great and complements my X100f 'pocket' camera, but I miss full-frame. Can't 100% explain why. I was thinking Z6ii would solve the problem - sell everything else, keep Nikon glass. But... Z6ii cost is higher, lenses cost more and seem to be heavier, and there's a good pre-owned market for A7iii. I'd appreciate your thoughts, if you have a moment.... (i) sell Nikon DSLR + lenses, Sell Fuji + 2 lenses (ii) adopt A7iii plus the 2-3 lenses I use most often Any reasons not to go that route? Many thanks.

About the battery life of the z6ii, I shot 1032 images over the course of 4 hours with a single charge and still have 3 bars left. What is more, I did regularly review the images with the display. Was your display always on that you only could squeeze out 420 images with a single charge?

Small correction on Nikon's touch interface. You don't need to confirm settings with the OK button. Just either tab twice or hold down longer. Nikon's touch menu can be operated without any any button usage

Would my D500 / D810 lenses fit on the Z6II body ?

I love Nikon but they are very slow in mirrorless game, we shall give Nikon some time to catchup, by meantime enjoy shooting other powerful mirrorless brand .

Good review, but I don’t agree about limited lens choice with Nikon. With the FTZ adapter you have access to literally hundreds of amazing lenses. This alone is probably the biggest asset of the Nikon yet you didn’t even mention this.

Glad I found your vídeos, love the comparisons! One question if you allow me but it has nothing to do with the comparison. You mention the color difference in between the two cameras. I have the Sony a7iii but I love the colours and contrast of the the Nikon so in a way I regret buying the sony because I shoot manly portraits and I really struggle with the colours. Do you know anyway that I can make my sony colours look like nikon colours? Any preset that I can apply to my raws (even if it is paid) to make them look better or even any camera settings that can change the (for me) terrible colours of sony? Hi! Love your reviews, what do you recommend between m6ii and z50? I am trying to build a travel kit under 1500$, m6ii has better resolution and AF,nikon has a built in evf. I can get an extra prime with the z50 which could be somewhat useful for low light? What do you recommend?

thanks for great comparison and detailed review. seems in A7III images are exaggerated while Nikon has real colors, also in higher ISOs sony photos have more noise. its all about your taste which one to get but overall I like real natural tones of Nikon. sony photos looks like retouched a little and makes the photos more beautiful.

Considering the sensor is the same, Sony is literally one firmware update away from having 4k60 on the A7iii, they only don't either because their processor isn't good enough (which I doubt, considering the much better downsampled footage on 4K) or they just don't want and are reserving that to A7IV, which is a shame but well...

if Sony upgrades a few things in the next iteration of the A7III, they should put Nikon out of business. They now have the power of a broad product line, system level support, lens availability etc. They can ratchet the price up and down at will to gain market share given their strong base. If physical ergonomics are not important, and a person takes the time to learn the Sony menu system, then Nikon makes no sense at all. I personally like the feel and handling of the Nikon. The way the camera actually operates in my hands feels more natural to me. I am sensitive to EVF resolution. However, if autofocus is important, or lens selection, then Sony is the only game in town. For some reason I like the A7S3. I don't care about megapixel count. The A7S3 is probably Sony's best overall package right now. Thanks and stay safe!!

Nice video. One note on the Nikon Z system is the future lens selection might outperform the E mount given its much larger diameter. It has been mentioned that it could except and medium format sensor. Another advantage is the prospect of more f .95 glass that could have autofocus.

More perspective is nikon whose z mount is larger closer to a sensor sharper and and better lenses so far. Moreover Nikon have not shown yet its pro z9. So Nikon is the future. Besides output image is better in Nikon. It looses for now in autofocus. But this may change soon...
