Definitely earned a sub more skate footage and info on camera, settings, lenses, and post production! This was seriously a great video for me. Just got back into skating after a 10 year break and am completely obsessed again. Now I’m looking at a camera and this was pretty much exactly what I needed

Thank you Alex!!! So stoked you got some value out of it, sometimes it's a bit daunting putting these things out and wondering if it will resonate. Appreciate you, and I'm glad you're back on the board!

Thanks for this! I've been looking for skateboarding footage using the A7siii. I bought an A7C but returned it because it doesn't do anything over 30fps in 4k, so skateboarding looked choppy. And it didn't have Active Steady Shot either. I did however get a Weebill S gimbal that was game changing! It can go into "slung" mode, so it acts like a top handle. It was small enough to film lines with, and really smoothed out my footage, especially when filming a line where the skater changes direction. I could jump off my board and back on it with very minimal shake. Thanks again!

No problem and thank YOU for the kind words! I have a RONIN SC gimbal that I've been wanting to test out with this, it also has that slung mode. Maybe I'll do some tests and post them up. Thanks dude!

Thx Joe to take time to make video like this..I appriciate a lot!! My questions is Are you always filming in S-log or you just test it for fun!? And how do you set your cam when you are on slog mode..specialy the ISO!? Thx again!!!

Hey Alex thank you! If I'm handing off footage to an editor for a Vlog or something with a quick turnaround, I'll shoot in a more finished look, like Rec709. But I really dig the way the S-Log footage looks even with my limited experience with grading it, so I'm planning on using it as much as possible. There's a lot of theories on how to set your exposure when in log (Gerald Undone has some really thorough videos on this), but I generally expose like I normally would, or maybe over expose it by a stop or 2. As far as ISO, it depends on what you're going for. With skating, my main focus is usually on making sure the action is captured appropriately, and that I have the option to slow it down in post if need be. I usually shoot at 60p, and try to keep the shutter speed to 1/125 if I can (so that the shutter number is as close to double the frame rate as you can get), and then adjust the ISO accordingly. But it can be a little tougher with DSLRs in bright sunlight unless you have ND filters for your lens. But I don't mind raising the shutter speed up to accommodate. Appreciate your comments man, I'll try to keep the videos flowing.

Really curious on how your computer is handling the 10 bit 4:2:2 footage. My older MacBook Pro is incapable of viewing the footage via thumbnail and requires the Sony Catalyst Browse software. Similarly, editing on Premiere without a Proxy really kills the CPU. What computer have you been using when working with 10 bit 4:2:2 and how has that been treating you? If you don't mind me asking! Thanks!

So, I'm able to edit the footage pretty smoothly in Premiere, on my iMac Pro w/ 3 GHz 10-Core Intel Xeon W. I do however have trouble with the 4k footage if I'm using my MacBook Pro, which is definitely a bummer when I'm on the road. Thank heavens for Catalyst Browse, as that at least lets me view and log the clips so I know that I'm getting what I set out to get!

@@killatape Thanks so much for the quick reply! When renaming and logging on Catalyst I always have found it a little hair pulling and not as fast as the quick space bar, view it, name it, move on... but hey you're right... it works! I know the 8 bit greatly reduces the hang ups with CPU functionality but I've yet to do a good comparison on 10 vs. 8 to see the risk reward. Thanks again, these videos are great!

I got the a7riii what lens do you recommend for videos? I have the Sony 11mm but seems good for vlogging but for action seems a little rough

Have you shot anything in low-light/high ISO yet? I'm slightly worried that the heavy noise reduction the camera applies might lead to smeary/blurry motion in darker conditions. Also, have you shot anything long-lens with the AF tracking the skater yet? I would assume it would work well, it was decent on my A7iii I had a couple years ago, but for the price the Siii better be damn near perfect.

Thanks for the comment! I'm definitely looking to test both of these things out. Shot some some stuff of the moon/sky the other night in near pitch dark conditions, but I am looking forward to trying the camera with skating in dark/nighttime conditions. I know with the (unofficial?) Dual Base ISO, you can crank the ISO up to 12800 and get a super clean image, so I'm looking forward to seeing what that final result looks like. The focus tracking seems to be really on point, but that's another thing that I want to test. Would not want to have it "breathing" trying to find focus in the middle of a trick. More to come soon!

thanks for sharing this! what focal length were the canon fisheye clips shot at? I would assume something past 10mm, right?

My pleasure! I was somewhere between 12 and 14mm. I normally like to zoom out to have some vignette with this lens but opted against it for this shoot
