Update to video info.....Through a recent firmware update the A8F now has Dolby Vision compatibility!

Hi Captain Pancakes. This is a great TV overall, but if you're using it for gaming I'd strongly suggest checking out the X900F if you're looking to upgrade. It's a step above the 900E and much better for gaming than an OLED (no risk of image retention). Here's a link so you can see our latest deals on the 900F: www.abt.com/resources/pages/search.php?keywords=xbr%20900f&XBR900F_2018081 Thanks for watching! -Carl

You mentioned the tv was impressive from every angle. How can it be impressive if it's only 700 nits? the brightness lets it down don't you think?
@abtelectronics
@abtelectronics 5 лет назад
Hi TheTruth. I didn't find the brightness to have any impact on the viewing angle. Because of how OLEDs work you can get way off center and the colors remain accurate. They're similar to plasma TVs in that regard. Brightness on OLEDs can be a factor if you're in a very brightly lit room though. These really do best in dimly lit areas, like a dedicated theater room or a room where you have control of how much light gets in. If you're looking to put a TV into a room that gets a lot of light, the Sony X900F series would be a great one to consider. Or the upcoming Z9F series! Thanks for watching! -Carl

+Abt Electronics Hi there! thanks for your reply.....i am in the position to buy a tv but don't know which. I had my heart set on the xf90 here in the uk...but got convinced by the af8 sony oled, but was disappointed to learn about the 700 nit brightness, and samsung gives 2000 on their led, also disappointed by their remote control.....panasonic and samsung offer a much more premium controler.....but no other set offers what sony offers. The a1 extreme chip and better motion handling. Should i wait until sony brings out a brighter oled? My living room is just a standard uk living room.....1 bay window next to the tv.

I'm not certain that OLEDs are going to get much brighter. That's one of their limitations. The brighter they are, the more easily burn-in can occur. The Sony Z9D is currently being sold for discounted pricing because the Z9F is coming out shortly. I'd highly recommend looking into that. The Z9D offers an outstanding picture, but struggles with off angle viewing. If you're going to be sitting directly in front of the TV I don't think there's a better picture out there right now. I hope this helps. Good luck with your decision!

THE RAFCAVE Hi there! Got mine 4 days ago. I don’t know, I feel like this TV lacks of something. I keep adjusting it.. for gaming and watching movies. I’m always switching from Vivid to Standard and Vivid Photo”. Heck I can’t decide which screen configuration is better for each case. And the surface of the screen is to damn shiny, you get to much reflection on it. I hope I get used to it soon :/ it’s a quite costly TV

Good overall review. But X motion clarity isn't a processor, it's an algorithm. The X1 extreme is the processor and from what I have seen in comments from Sony, it's the same chip as last year. The X1 Ultimate seems to be the next chip in their pipeline but isn't released yet in any 2018 models.
@lsorense
@lsorense 6 лет назад
Also the A8F does not have X-motion clarity. The X900F does (I don't believe any other model does yet) since it requires backlight control to implement. Given there is no backlight control on an OLED, the A8F can't have it.

I know there was an issue with the XBR65A1E where some people experienced grey horizontal lines across the screen shortly after buying the TV. Sony has apparently corrected this issue with the A8F. Something to consider if you are planning to buy one and you think the A1E and A8F are the same. There have been at least one behind the scenes improvement.

Hey man recently bought a A8F and I'm having one problem. Whenever I go on RU-vid and put on 4K videos in 60fps the video lags like crazy. This only happens on RU-vid, 4k videos on Amazon prime and Netflix work perfectly fine, although that may be because they aren't in 60fps?. I have another 4K TV in the house (LG) and whenever I play the same 4K 60fps videos on that TV there is absolutely no lag; this is how I know it is not an internet connection problem as both the Sony and the LG are connected to the same Wifi. Would love to know what you think may be the problem, and if you have experienced this same issue with the A8F ? Thanks.

What about basic technical specs? CPU (cores and max speed) and RAM capacity? Why it is exposed for smartphones android and tablets and not for TVs? I am facing performance problems in AF8 with content in 4K using RU-vid and Prime Video. I have installed AIDA64 and it shows only 2GB RAM and a quad core 1.1 GHz max. I think this is under-sized.

Hi, thanks for the review, but i'm a bit confused. You say that unlike the A1 which is at a angle the A8F sits upright at 90 degrees - but at 0:37 you can clearly see that it is at a slight angle - i'm guessing ~3-4 degrees. Everywhere i look online it is always referenced as a 90 degree upright angle, and this is clearly is not the case. Why is nobody mentioning this?Don't get me wrong, I actually like the slight angle as I find it more pleasing than a pure 90 degree and the A8F is definitely a very strong contender for my living room setup, i am just perplexed at to why nobody (including Sony) has mentioned this slight tilt and why everybody continues to say 90 degrees, as if purposely ignoring its existence. I would have thought it was a selling point. If i bought a TV expecting i staight 90 degree angle and got a 86 degree tilt, i would actually be pretty pissed. Luckily for me this is exactly what i wanted, but for others it might be an issue.
@tomcavanaugh5237

Hey Carl, Are you 100% positive this is a new generation panel? I've heard that LG didn't upgrade the 2017 panel this year. Plus, it's the same X1 Extreme processor from last year. Can you check if it has the near-black banding that all 2017 OLED panels had? Thanks.

Hi Gorillapancake. I had a meeting with a rep from Sony last week and he confirmed that the panel is new for 2018 and the X-1 Extreme processor was improved as well. I'll have to check further into the banding, but I'll update once I know. They had to use our A8F for some presentations at the store last week so we didn't have it available to use. It takes acrobatic skills to install a 65” OLED. It’s surprisingly light but you’re not supposed to touch the screen with your hands and it’s a bit of a challenge balancing it without a grip. Two people can do it but even then it might be a good idea to have two foldable handles on the back.

They can improve it by fixing image retention and burn in. I have two oleds and refuse to play my PS4 pro because the couple times I did I got image retention and I’m not going to risk it on a television that cost me $3500. They can also fix the banding issues. On my 55inch oled It’s isn’t as noticeable but on my 65inch oled I noticed it the first time I loaded up Netflix. OLED does have problems. My oleds get image retention too easily and my brightness isn’t even set to high. Both of them are 2017 models.

Great post. What are yours and everyones thoughts on burn in and image retention? I’m currently shopping for a 65” OLED & was set on the Sony until yesterday an employee at frys told me Sony is horrible and they’re getting a lot of complaints/returns due to image retention. He told me LG was a way better choice. What’s your opinion on that?
@IvanaGiznya
@IvanaGiznya 6 лет назад
Ted Bryant I have two lg oleds both 2017 models. They’re great but they DO have problems. First of all if you get a 65inch oled more than likely you’re gonna get a panel with noticeable banding. I noticed the banding on my oled the first time I fired up Netflix. It isn’t as noticeable on my 55 inch tho. You can see it in dark scenes. Second image retention is very real and happens very easily on my lg oleds. Especially when playing games with an static HUDs. To give you an example, one day I loaded up Hulu and left it on the selection screen then walked away for 2 mins (not even long enough for the television to go into its standby mode) and my oled panel got image retention from the different titles on the selection screen. I absolutely would not recommend an oled if you’re going to be using it for gaming or if you’re going to be using it in a bright room. The reflections the display causes in a bright room with sunlight are a nuisance. Honestly if you can afford the Sony OLED I would go for it. I know for 2017 they used the same panels as LG but the real reason to get their oled over LGs is because of the X1. I think I saw the A1e oled on sale for like $3,599. That’s how much I paid for my 65inch oled in July of 2017.

overblown. it doesn't happen on every OLED and probably not nearly as often as the haters make it seem. LCD Tvs have serious issues as well, but no one talks about those. Just get a store warranty and you'll be fine.
@IvanaGiznya
@IvanaGiznya 6 лет назад
Michelle Alexandria it’s definitely not an overblown issue. It’s a very real issue that lg refuses to fix. Just go online and do some research before you say it’s an overblown issue. Also go into any store that has an oled on display and you can see that their oleds have some serious burn in! Anytime I go to any electronics store I check out the TVs before I leave and they always have oleds with burn in. Seriously just go to your nearest Best Buy and look at any oled they have on display and you’ll see that it isn’t an “overblown” issue. I have two 2017 oleds from lg and image retention happens way too easily. Even with my oled light set to 40.

tommi ko No. UI lag is android and the slow CPUs fault. Input lag is the video processor and the fact it is doing processing on the video. You could get less lag if you were willing to have no processing at all on video which seems to be what LGs game mode does.
@ahmedmorsli1186
@ahmedmorsli1186 6 лет назад
Lennart Sorensen but the game mode is supose to be desabling video processing which mean there is no video processing engaged like most tvs does, how can it be the cpu or android ?
@lsorense
@lsorense 6 лет назад
Sony doesn't believe in disabling all processing in even game mode. Helps keep HDR looking good by doing dynamic mapping and such. Now why their 1080 scaling adds so much extra lag is surprising, that doesn't seem like it should be a big operation to perform, but for some reason 1080 game lag is a lot higher than 2160 game lag. After all the game system has to generate the frame, then send it over hdmi, and most likely the TV doesn't start to process the frame until the entire frame is received (I suspect those TVs with lower lag may in fact start processing before the entire frame is received), and only when the processing is done does the frame get displayed. Each step adds a bit of lag, often close to one frame time worth. A really smart design would try to do the steps in parallel and reduce the lag more (and they may even be doing that and still just taking too much time to do it all). Life with a CRT was simple. It displayed as it received with no processing at all (just some brightness/contrast adjustment done the same all the time on the signal as it was being displayed).

Thanks for the reply,Just for the information LG 2018 oled tvs has DYNAMIC TONE MAPPING (META DATA) in GAME MODE and keeps 21 Ms of input lag.

It's seems there isn't much difference from last years Sony OLED. More cosmetic and some small picture improvements but that's all. I rather wait till 2019 where I would get HDMI 2.1 and a chance Sony might put their new "Ultimate" chip in their 2019 OLED. I love OLED's but Samsung now has FALD in their QLED's making for a very bright image with excellent blacks which would translate well for HDR. Thanks for posting.

Underwood, I agree, the Sony Ultimate chip TV will be incredible but keep in mind 2019 TV's are a year away and who know what new technology will be out by then or how well they will improve established technology.

But Sony already offers a FALD that offers the most dimming zones ever available. The ZD9.

I saw the Z9D in the store last year and it was the most impressive LCD I've ever seen and it was right next to an LG OLED. However, how it compares to the new Samsung Fald top of the line remains to be seen. The Z9D may have darker darks because of more zones, but it may not be as bright or better motion than the Samsung top of the line, we'll see. As for the Sony 2019 OLED with a(possibly) new Ultimate chip, HDMI 2.1 my guess it will be the highest rated TV of 2019. But that remains to be seen as well.

I don't see oled offering much with new TVs, look at what Samsung has done with the qled q9 TV,that is a huge step in the right direction.

QLED is a marketing trick for LED technology.. This Sony Oled TV is far more better.

Ankit Sen how is Qled just a gimmick thats just not true Quantum dots are real science they are being used everywhere way more then people realize I bet - There are quite a few Qd companys working with Qds one is Nanosys who is working together with Samsung on still trying to make the Electric Emissive Qd tv its already Photo emissive just not yet electrically charged like a Oled but Oled is made with Organic Compound so its not the best for tvs degrades faster so soon if Samsung makes a true Inorganic self electrically emissive tv that will be awesome anybody can research all this on google NANOSYS SAMSUNG and if you type in google ( NANOSYS NEWS ) it should show up on top click that then click on the one by ANDROID AUTHORITY and then go back and click on others as well good reads

The Q9 is a FALD LED television. It has been done before. It is not some grand step in the "right" direction.

Hi Always VIRAL. I confirmed with Sony that they're using a brand new OLED panel for 2018 in this set. Plus with the updated X1-Extreme processor and better motion handling with improved X-Motion clarity you do get a better viewing experience. It's not night and day, but it is improved. Thanks, as always, for watching! -Carl

Is the new panel brightness more than the A1E? I really interested on this TV, the brightness is the only reason,of i haven't chose the old one

Hi Cwo IC1101. The A8F does seem brighter than the A1E. We don't have a way to measure it scientifically here at the store, but from looking at the two I noticed a difference myself. Thanks for watching! -Carl

Ron Jon ... I meant Xbox One as a platform. Who cares about 4K when all you can play is multiplats and old games. Want true 4K? Get a PC.
@ronjon6760
@ronjon6760 6 лет назад
Valentyn Lyevyentsov none of this is true just fake biased media and Sony ponies. it's a fact Xbox has plenty of exclusives and in fact was better exclusives the first few years of this generation. it is a fact Sony has had a stronger lineup this second half of this generation but there are still plenty of games on Xbox a mmmm d MS will be announcing many new games and IPs at this E3

Ron Jon I find it funny how the only argument Xbox fans ever use is "wait until E3." It's been how many E3's already?

$4,000 dollars for a TV is ridiculous the whole idea of TV's costing more than a car is unbelievable when I look at some of the larger TV's and a few will cost more than a house at $100,000 dollars is crazy to think you can obtain a Phd for less
@patrickm1092
@patrickm1092 6 лет назад
No offence, this the exact TV as the A1 in fact Sony still consider A1 as there flagship TV. Saying this TV will get close to the wall if you mount, I say no because the back of this TV is massive. So it is a pass for me, if you want a great TV wait for LG or if you don't like screen burning buy Q9FN or Q8FN
