Our review sample is the 65-inch Sony KD-65AG9 (UK model number KD65AG9BU) which currently has a street price of £3799.

Well, i spent a week making my decision about which OLED TV to buy. I have watched and read a lot. I'll put some info here, hope it will help somebody. My main question was which is better - sony (ag9/af9) or lg c9, here what i have find out: 1) Sony has the best upscaling 2) Sony has the best motion processing 3) Sony has the most detailed picture 4) Sony has the most accurate picture(i mean colors) 5) Sony has better sound 6) Sony has better self preserving mechanizms(Sony analyses current picture and if it thinks, that some pixels are too brigth for a long time - it auto dimms it, which protects your TV from permanent burn-in, LG has no such auto function). 7) Sony has the best OLED panels. I'll explain - all OLED panels are produced by LG, Sony buys them from LG. So Sony picks only the best ones, while LG sells just all of them. It is often said, that LG is better because it is brighter and has hdmi 2.1, i would like to clarify it: 1) Brighter doesn't mean better. As i comapred LG and sony picture, i find out, that LG tends to oversaturate colors by brightening them up, which leads to micro-halo effects, which decreases color/details accuracy. So brighter DOESN'T mean better. However, for HDR it actually adds more possibilities with simultenous decreasing of color accuracy 2) At this point of time(10-2019), there is absolutely NO gain in HDMI 2.1. It may be important only for next gen consoles, which are at least a year ahead AND chances that the next gen consoles can produce >60FPS at 4k(main point of hdmi 2.1) are next to nothing. I mean existing consoles struggle to maintain 30 FPS at FULL HD, do you really believe that the next gen suddenly rocket launch to 100 FPS at 2160p? It can be true only for not demanding games(old ones, indies, platformers), AAA titles would be 60 FPS at 4k in the best scenario. You can ask - how do i know? Well, current Nvidia the best monstorsity 2080Ti struggles to maintain 60 FPS at most of fresh AAA titles and there is no chance, that next gen consoles will be at least close to 2080Ti(comon, it costs three times more, than whole PS5. There is no such miracles in this world). However, there is one good thing in HDMI 2.1, that can be useful for better sound - eARC, but it is supported by Sony also. There is also interesting info: In USA AG9 is recognised as the BEST OLED TV. However, in UK the same is said about C9. Personally, i tend to believe USA, because they know about filming a bit more, than UK. So which are the strongest sides of LG C9? 1) Lesser input lag. Yeah, for games it will be better. Not like ground breaking experience, but definetly better. If you play a lot on consoles and don't really care about best motion and movie experience, than C9 will be better for you 2) WebOS tends to be more user friendly and understandable 3) The strongest side of C9 - price. Yeah, in my country(Poland) there is 850$ price difference between Sony AG9 and LG C9. So by $ LG wins hands down I want to clarify something: I am not Sony fan boy. It has no meaning for me which brand to buy. It is only quality that i am interesting in. I don't say, that C9 sucks, it is really good OLED TV and best value both hands down. I just aggregate facts and facts choose Sony, so am i. Summ: If you want the best pictures for movie and you are not limited by $ - go Sony. There is no question in it. But if you want the best value for money and more concerned about games - go LG. However, for games i would rather suggest Samsung QLED. It will be definetely better for gamers.

Thank you for the comparison. Just the Info I was looking for (again). Got the same Info from a special staff member at my local distributor, who doesn't work for a specific brand. Sony has the best upscaling features and processor on the market due to their main position in the film industry. They have the knowledge. If you compare this TV while watching a Blu Ray or other Full HD content you will experience the difference to other brands. And by now that's most of the content on normal tv or even streaming, not the reference pictures you can see in the shops. The price of course is different, here in Germany it's about 600 € more for the Sony.

Thanks Vincent for the video and your professional opinion . Someday people will wake up and realize that overly bright tv isnt the way to go for a great accurate picture . If u say it often enough unless thats what u want. Measurement of peak brightness means nothing when u eyes see it. OLED get plenty bright when and where it matters. I love my Lg c9. but that tv will someday be my gaming tv and a Sony most likely will be my movie tv cause of their upconversion n motion. Lg motion isnt as good but its ok for the most part. I regret not waiting for Sony oled to some degree.
@phantomskim698
@phantomskim698 5 лет назад
I am sensitive to motion.. but is it that big of difference between the two side by side? I think if Lg doesn't have any stutter and judder with motion similar with sony that it shouldn't be much differences.. only those two problems with judder and stutter is what people start noticing when motion its not perfect other than that seriously doubt anyone would notice any difference between the two but still i could be wrong
@camarykaren
@camarykaren 5 лет назад
@@phantomskim698 As far as motion for me lg and Sony are different . Ive always bought Sony tv for their upconversion , color, but more importantly their motion interpolation . The lgc9 n b8 for that matter too, just dont handle motion as well. Im very sensitive to it and with the LG C9 im constantly messing around with the damn motion control depending on the material im watching.ie apple tv, lg build in app, direct tv , blu ray etc. Now, with the Sony 940d and x900f i just set the motion control and it worked across the board. Never had to play with it. Since i have the "older" lg b8, only 55 inches, I can say its much better on the LG C9 ,but its not on Sony level. Personally, i didnt think Sony will release their Oled, albeit a couple of months later, at the same price as Lg. No regrets cause the Lg despite the motion is awesome. It also responds a lot faster n doesnt take forever to switch between inputs from my Marantz like the Sony. I doubt that has to do with the lg hdmi 2.1 since the marantz isnt 2.1 . I guess.

I actually prefer large bezels on a tv cuz it frames the picture and make the screen look bigger than it actually is. Just like a painting looks better with a frame. If there was some fake bezel accessories to buy for a new tv I would. And a grey bezel can actually give the impression of deeper blacks on letterbox bars on lcd.

It seems many customers would pick an LG OLED over a Sony OLED when seeing them side by side in the store because of the brighter LG picture combined with a lower price. Legitimately better off to get the A8F, honestly the two side by side the 2018 model looks better. It seems as though the 8 series took a hit this year to achieve a lower price point to compete more easily with LG and to offer a greater justification of the higher price point and upgrade value of the A9. Honestly think you are better off to go A8, friend, take advantage of the deals you can find out there with end-of-life pricing. OR, consider the C9 at the same price point as the A8G.

AG8 is a step down AF8 in terms of sound quality, in rest it's the same TV with a 2019 panel. Garbage remote and software. It only make sense to buy the AG8 for the motion if you can't find the F no more. That was my only reason to move from LG to Sony last year.

Android 8 is great only when comparing it against 7. Volume adjusting delays on screen, app crash, 5 to 15 seconds delays for basic controls sometimes, and the cherry is when the TV gets stuck and you have to unplug it. Android is bad as an OS but the Sony version is the worst. And the remote you'll hate it day by day. I am now desperate to get the new remote whatever the price but I can't find it on the market. Fantastic review, as always. Planning for an 77' AG9 for next year once prices come down here in Switzerland. I appreciate your precision in the reviews. That precision is related to your taste for Swiss Watches? Spotted a submariner there, do you mind give some more details on other pieces of your collection :-)?

@MW-ng7bp
@MW-ng7bp 5 лет назад
The C9 honestly just has more features to provide an edge in performance and future proofing and is a more significant upgrade over past year model than the A9G. The A9 has had no improvement in processing, a slight increase in OS performance, and rates lower in sports, cinema and gaming, largely due to the lack of crucial hardware improvements like HDMI 2.1 for lossless audio and superior data transfer speeds allowing for the input of HFR content from sources other than usb as well as enabling VRR and less than half of the input latency on the C9. There are honestly a lot of reasons, also including price, that the C9 wins out over the A9G, I suggest having a look at the in depth review and notes laid out in the comparison tool and review on RTINGS to get a more in depth justification though.

For this kind of money, the TV has to do games at the top of the class. As I am a more of a gamer than a movie buff, this might steer me towards Samsung QLED with the 900R 8K being the best they currently have.

Thank you for this excellent video which is informative and insightful. Regarding these chrominance overshoot issues, perhaps LG DISPLAYS should be held accountable. If they were more rigid in testing parameters, they may have fixed it. Where is Zero Tolerance gone. So TV manufacturers and Customers are suffering, yet paying premium prices. You can argue 2017 OLED Displays were better in this regard.

I have burning questions because of one fundamental confusion ( not related to this video ) - How does using a streaming device such as the Nvidia shield over HDMI input change the picture quality when compared to the source being on the native OS. For eg if I use the Netflix app on the os vs a streaming device. Especially with the Nvidia shield, you have Dolby vision and hdr 10 output + some ai enhancements. So I am a little confused as if we are still utilizing the prowess of X1 Ultimate / LG A( gen 2 ) when we use these external Inputs. If Nvidia shiel ( or any other ) device has native Dolby vision processing will it change the picture you get on Sony A9 ?

Do you prefer using the HDR optimizer from the panny 820 uhd player with this tv to help with the tone mapping or is it better to just let Sony do all the work?
@shaggydw8252
@shaggydw8252 5 лет назад
The TV processor it's fined tuned with the TV capabilities in mind so it will do a better job. The question is what what HDR approach do you want. Sony is clipping to maintain average picture brightness where others may prefer to preserve specular highlights.

Awesome TV for movie/video watching, but I long for the day when these displays will be awesome for gaming as well. We need 120Hz and higher native refresh rates at native resolution (4K/8K) to become a standard soon. Great motion requires high refresh rates (120Hz+). Great review btw Vincent.

Hi Vincent, I read on ratings.com that the a8h plays 24p at 96hz on the a8h. Is the same true for the a9g? They claim the settings that cause this are as follows: "We've retested the BFI and can confirm that when playing 24p content, the flickering frequency is 96Hz with the Clearness slider set to '1' or '2', and setting it to '3' lowers it to 48Hz." Do you have any idea if that is true on the a9g?

It might be nice to know that Sony has finally addressed parts of the DV issues, namely the ugly posterization displayed in darker scenes when using the internal apps and the lower DV brightness on internal apps compared to external sources like the fire TV stick 4k. Following the firmware update 6.2550 (which is still based on Android 8 and not officially available yet), DV using the internal apps is considerably brighter and low light posterization is finally gone. It’s easily (and measurably) a match for an external source (Fire TV stick 4K in my case) in terms of brightness (sometimes even brighter) and near black detail. The DV profiles have also changed somehow. Turning off all picture improvements, DV vivid now looks exactly like DV bright, which is also much brighter than before. I have made these findings using my AF9, but other users have reported the same applies to the AG9. I don’t know, however, if the general brightness of DV using external sources is also higher than before (forgot to measure that before the update :( Since Android 9 might be coming out one day, there is hope sind has carried over these improvements to the upcoming firmware version. Still sad though that is has taken Sony more than a year to fix this problem without even officially recognizing that something was obviously wrong.

Every OLED with the Sony Surface Audio has lacked treble, it's all mid-range and cuts high frequencies noticeably. It goes loud and has decent weight for a TV, but the screen cannot replicate a tweeter's frequency, so despite having a multitude of sound options, it always sounds the same; harsh and loud.
