In July of 1999, Sony gave tech lovers the perfect pet to kick off life in the new millennium: the first robot dog for the home. “AIBO” stood for Artificial Intelligence roBOt, but when pronounced in Japanese the word also means “buddy, pal or accomplice.” And even though it cost $2100 and was only sold on the internet - again, back in 1999 - Sony sold 5000 Aibos in its first week.
Flash forward exactly 20 years … and the newest Aibo, model ERS-1000, just clomped his way into my home. He’s sophisticated, smart, and so lifelike he’ll wag his way right into your heart - which is exactly why those who buy him should be careful. It is Sony, and we all know how they did with PS Vita, how they broke hearts of developers (me included) with theyr support negligence and slow death of the platform. So, I will not trust Sony with theyr dedication.

Well, Aibo is like a passion project for Sony. I'm sure they aren't profitable for Sony, but you can see the love they put into this.

I own 3 AIBOs (312B, 311, 7M2) and I love them dearly. They work fine, but my 7's foot shattered. I just got her, but she is about 14. They're really great robots, and they really connect with you. I don't run them all the time (esp. unsupervised) but they're very endearing. The AIBO-LIFE website is still frequented and there still is a large community. I have had the same 7 repaired when I got her, as she couldn't produce sound and her leg was coming off. Also yes, I do have real pets!

I remember watching a documental about the 3rd party repair services for discontinued aibos, truly heartbreaking watching an elder man crying for his pet robot because his local repair tech ran out of spares

One of Sony's products already made its way into my heart, and it doesn't have any of the characteristics that make it easy for Aibo to do so. It's the CECH-E01. I still fear the day something happens to it.

If Sony shut down AIBO. They should let people host the server software on their own computer or server, allowing AIBO to continue to learn. If they don't want to have a team working on AIBO, they should make it open source people can update AIBO so it can continue getting better.

The old Aibos uses memory card personality and that also separates with language recognition sold on different country. On that IMO they're way better than the old one. The old community and new one are just different kind of people tho, those that still have old one is tinkerers, while new ones are rich people who wants low fuss pet.

@6:38 That made it for me. I was worried that when the servers eventualy go down, and they will go down, my 3 grand robot dog would turn into a 3 grand robot paperweight. I've been wanting an Aibo for a while and only recently got to a place where I have the cash for it but I was trying to decide between an ERS 7 and the new one. If my Aibo will just continue functioning the same way an ERS7 would when the servers go down then I'm ok with that.

i mean, considering that some dogs cost more than that, and you have to buy them food etc its not that unreasonable to get one if for example your landlord doesnt allow pets or you have allergies or something like that
