In today's Dirt Bike demo: How much better is the Balanced Optical Steady Shot (BOSS) on the Sony FDR-X3000 and HDR-AS300 versus the previous generation of Sony Action Cam: the AS15 and AS100, which used Electronic Image Stabilization Steady Shot? Is it worth buying?

If I had to pick I'd say I like the X3000 with steady shot off the best, but the differences on all of them seemed negligible. Even the AS15 was enjoyable. At the end of the day I'm still looking at a dork on a dirt bike in the desert on a small screen with compressed video. I think the best advice for vloggers is just get what you can get and worry more about content and community than pixels.

That x3000 looks really good. But honestly what I noticed more than anything is how much your riding has improved over the years. You were flying along there!

Thank you, I have the As15 and wanted to see how much of an Improvement action cameras are today. The answer is a lot after seeing this. Thank you, I'll keep the As15 as a work commuting camara but have to upgrade his sure

I bought the AS100 at your suggestion from the video review you did on that camera. I am impressed with the updates you get with the as3000. What I'd like to see is how the image looks when the camera is attached to the bike instead of your helmet. Your body is absorbing quite a bit of the vibration given off by the motor/suspension so how does that get transmitted thru the camera when the camera is mounted rigidly to the bike?

I really like the steady shot! More than I thought I would, I love being able to see the terrain and the scenery better!

Wow this camera looks awesome on your channel! Do you have any tips on getting the footage to look so good when you upload it to youtube? I've seen a lot of comments from other users stating that youtube compresses the video in a different way than gopro footage that makes it look really blurry and terrible in moving scenes. Even to the point that they returned them and bought gopros instead.

Thanks for pointing out the water drops moving on the screen. Neat to see. Steady shot is completely amazing from my perspective, shaky cam is brutal to watch.

that's some sweet footage with the steadyshot, ty! it looks as good as a gimbal, at least for smoother tracks. i've been trying to access a sony to do a comparison to the grpo but no one ever replies... but all the reviews seem to suggest the gopro edges out the sony for we dirt riders at least.

ok, 1 - thanks... I didn't want a new camera, but now I do (but I love my AS30... and I just bought a SENA Prism that I can't get the Bluetooth mic to work with to reduce wind noise) 2 - This has nothing to do with the cameras and I hope you take this as the compliment it is meant to be. HOLY GEEZ!!! I don't know what it is, but watching you fly over everything you were riding on in this video somehow reminded me of the really old videos of falling off a KLR that was barely moving, or having to find some hikers (I think it was hikers) to help you pull it back up off the side of a steep single track drop off. Man has your riding improved over the years; you give us noobs hope :-)
@andypandy.

wow.... just wow, just a huge and noticable difference in the steady shot quality, the 3000 just wipes the floor with the others and still at a 170 degree view, unlike most others that cut the view down to 140 or 120 degrees to achieve the stablisation effect. Awesome comparrison mate!!

eveRide ADV or +NicMediaDesign (because you are also very sharp about these Sony's) After watching this on the Sony FDR-X3000 I wanted to see if you had a couple some impressions I could chatter with you about. My wife and I just picked up two of these in the last month for our dual sport riding, street riding, skiing and travel. My first question is on your video about the stabilization it wasn't clear to me if you confirmed that "Standard" is optical only and "Active" is both optical and digital stabilization. My second question is about battery life. My wife is getting a couple of hours on the camera battery with the remote being used (shutting the camera off when not in use). I am getting maybe 1 hour with the battery life remote and 1.5 just using the camera alone, not continuous recording just total life, so I think I may have a bad battery. Total recording only comes to about 15 or 20 minutes with my battery. What kind of battery life are you getting? We are shooting the same as you 1080 @ 60. Thanks!

First of all, this guy deserves a medal for being able to talk clearly while still riding his bike over some pretty rough terrain. So kudos to you for doing that. Is it just me or are the colors on the 3000 washed out compared to the 100, or is part of it that he was riding in pretty overcast conditions? The 100 just seemed a lot sharper to me. Anyways, excellent review and thanks for such a good comparison and footage to compare.

Hey Tyler... just found your channel and love it. Thx for this comparison.. really thx. Fantastic. I am new to this " camera on helmet " thing and I recently discovered that I enjoy film editing/ making.... so I need to get some action cams... I do not want to miss optical stab on one of my DSLR lenses... however, for motorbiking? Your v100 footage looks "better" to me vs the x3000 .. the x3000 looks like your easypeacy smoothly flying over that dirt, whereas in reality you are not.. speedy motorbiking and enduro riding is tough business.. I prefer seeing that :-) thx man

Thanks Tyler, great comparison. It's still relevant today and I don't like the "jerkiness" of Digital IS (or Steadyshot) once the cropped image limits are hit when doing bigger head movements, so the BOSS wins!.

This is nuts. I was just thinks about the steady shot from your camera. Sony movie studio has a similar thing I believe called stabilize. I'm currently working on a video to see how it looks. ***update*** I tried using the stabilize feature all weekend using different settings and it just makes a mess out of the video. I may have to ditch the GoPro for the Sony action cam. Your videos are smooth and fluid. I get a bit motion sick watching mine.

More than the edge cropping, I always had the problem of the chicken-head movement of the picture.. where it wouldn't pan smoothly but move the picture abruptly... I'm glad it's gone.. Would still like to see how the stabilisation works if you suddenly turn you head sideways.. how does it react to sudden panning.. (okay.. got some of it in the very end of the vid, thanks ;) )

not sure why any motovlogger would want a gopro hero 5 since you need a 50 dollar brick to connect a mic, gopro is diging it's own grave unfortunatly. deffinatly getting the FDR-X3000 when I need another cam

Sony also makes the HDR AS300 which is cheaper than the FDR X3000 because it doesn't have 4K which you don't need anyway. The FDRX3000 and the HDR AS300 have optical stabilization and the other models have digital stabilization.

how necessary is the live remote or can i go without?
@tecwzrd
@tecwzrd 7 лет назад
Not that necessary since you can link it to your smartphone via WIFI if you need a "live" view. I use a Joby action grip pole ($12) with a bicycle smartphone mount attached to the pole ($8-$13) to use the Sony Camera with one hand while filming. With the wide angle it's hard to actually miss what you are shooting at even without a live view.
@Bigdaddy078

Gotcha, i guess i was moreso asking is it necessary for when on vacation, so if im shooting in the water, in the car or hiking how necessary is the live view remote?

I gotta say Tyler, you're really selling me on these sony's and the X3000 seems to be the one that's tipped that decision. This camera doesn't looks like an Action cam anymore but rather a DSLR stuck to your head, I guess what was always my biggest avoidance was their stupid body design, I just wish it was flat and fat like a gopro instead of poking out a mile like a botched chin surgery. Never the less you've shown ways to get around many of these problems and i think its finally time to take picture quality over mounting options.
