Really good video, as always. For all the same reasons, and that my current set up is an a6400 system, I'm looking at the FX-30 as my next purchase. I don't want to solve problems that don't need solving. I have good lenses, mics, lights, recording monitor, gimbal etc that will work seamlessly with the FX-30 and my biggest expense after the body purchase will be (probably) 2 Anton Bauer Titon kits for the FX-30 and a6400 to power the set up all day and a few more Crucial SSDs for my Ninja V. Moving up to the FX-3 is down the road when the time is right.

Very informative! The FX6 definitely has its place, it's just not in my world yet at least :D I think, if you do more serious gigs, maybe music video productions or actual filmmaking, then it makes sense, but honestly, I feel the same way. I can get a lot done with my FX3, big variety of shooting styles, and my A7IV always comes handy as a B-cam.

What variable ND did you use for your FX3?
@seantheawesome1

This might be a long post but I've used both cameras and feel like I want to make a few counter arguments. For anyone trying to decide between the two cameras here are my thoughts: As someone (a professional videographer) who has used both the fx3 and the fx6 in a multitude of professional settings, including events, corporate, fitness and so on, in all kinds of setups too from handheld to tripod, I personally found that I enjoyed shooting on the fx6 way more! The ergonomics of my camera is something I have overlooked so much in my career so far and using the fx6 showed me just how big of a difference it makes. Switching back to using the fx3 after the fx6 really made me realise although its a much better design than other mirrorless cameras, it's still a mirrorless camera, that really doesn't have appropriate ergonomics for shooting video comfortably for long periods. The lack of shutter angle in the fx3 is something that I find infuriating, everything just feels slower and clunky when using the fx3, changing basic settings on the fly feels like an effort, whereas with the fx6 everything is accessible on the side of the camera. I used to always look for ibis in my cameras but when I moved from the gh5 to the bmpcc 4k that soon became less of an issue. I've learned how to tuck my arms in, push the back of the camera into my chest and get stable shots, and with my experience using the fx6, the lack of ibis has never been a problem. Yes, with a light setup you will get some micro jitters but that's nothing a simple bit of stabilisation in DaVinci can't fix. The internal nd filters have become an integral part of shooting video for me, I hated having to screw filters on and off when changing lenses and in my opinion the internal nd is one of the most if not the most useful features for run and gun shooting. The size of the fx6 has also never been a negative, in fact more of a positive thing. Firstly, as much as we don't want to accept it, it looks way more professional and makes a much bigger impact on the client. This is something we're all used to hearing online but I've now experienced it for myself. I recently did a fitness shoot and a relatively famous personal trainer was there (1 million followers on instagram famous) he took a liking to my rig, commented about how professional it looked and asked lots of questions about it, he then followed me on instagram and said he would be in touch when he needs a videographer. All because of the size of my camera rig! Secondly, as we also all know building a rig helps to get those stable shots but also is supposed to make our cameras more comfortable to shoot with, that's why you see people rig out mirrorless cameras with side handles etc but the fx6 is ready to go out of the box, I love the side grip and the top handle is way better than the top handle on the fx3. I don't know about you but I simply cannot do professional work using the small lcd screen on any camera, especially the fx3, so using an external monitor is essential. Trying to find a place to mount a monitor on the fx3 while using the xlr handle is the biggest challenge, you can't do it without it being extremely imbalanced or very uncomfortable to hold. External power is my next problem with the fx3, I hate using the small batteries on long shoots, I always get range anxiety and since switching to v mounts I just can't go back. Now, where is the most suitable place for a v mount? At the back, but where are most of the controls and the screen for the fx3 placed? At the back. The battery baseplate Chris uses seems like a good option but for me looks uncomfortable to hold and makes the camera bottom heavy. I love being able to use BPU 60 or 90 batteries natively on the fx6 for pretty much all day battery. These sony batteries can, as Chris mentioned be expensive and hard to find but core swx make a great one with d-tap and usb a out, which is great so you can power your monitor as well and are significantly cheaper than the sony ones. One more thing to add is the fx6 can be powered via mains, something I love for those long interview / studio setups. To summarise I think Chris made some good points and if you are like him and predominately shoot either weddings or real estate the fx3 probably is the better option. But, if you are like myself and you shoot across a wide variety of video genres I personally would say the fx6 is the better way to go. I also think that the fx6 is a far better long term investment, just look at the recent fx30 release, basically an aps-c fx3 with just as many features and for half the price. But how many cameras are on the market with internal nd's and a professional body design with sdi and timecode? not many, cinema cameras don't change anywhere near as quick as mirrorless do. It also gives you more longevity in your career to progress to higher places, working on bigger sets with bigger crews, I know in the UK the fx6 is slowly becoming one of the most commonly used cameras in the low-mid range commercial space, and are used all the time by major sports media teams alongside the fx9. If I could only by one to fulfil all my needs as a video shooter, to help me tackle whatever a client may throw at me that day, I would pick the fx6 in a heartbeat.

I think sometimes people forget every video everyone on RU-vid makes is their experience and thus their results/thoughts. All I’m ever doing is sharing mine based on what I use it for but always down for counter arguments, especially as yours are very well constructed. Again Thankyou for sharing. I think it was an important video for you to make as often people just think oh the more expensive camera will be better without actually considering the ins and outs of owning / using it. Im also in the position where im trying to decide between the two as the ones I've used belong to a friend / work partner. I guess im trying to put my thoughts down so I can convince myself haha

@auomi8762 Год назад
@@chrisbrockhurst and @Sean : Really appreciate both of your insights on this! I've been trying to pull the trigger over the past year on the Fx6 and I think I'm leaning towards the fx6 mainly because I believe the best value camera is the Sony a7s3. The a7s3 imo, pound for pound is a better value especially with the addition of S-Cinetone. Yes you do lose some features out of the box, but a fully rigged a7s3, paired with the atomos ninja turns the camera into a monster! The jump from a7s3 to Fx3 (or Fx30) isn't that great. Going from the Fx3 to the Fx6, there's a stark difference, especially with the ND filters. Overall, I think you just have to ask yourself, what are you using the camera for to justify the purchase. All in all, thank you both for the content and providing value as always :).

Slam dunk on this. I own the fx6 and used the FX3 on a few projects. The user interface on the FX3 felt clunky and abysmal. VNDs on the front of the FX3 can never match up to the FX6s electronic vnd as there will always be color shift. It's just a camera designed for professionals. Most cine cameras don't have ibis so I get the point owning every oss lens sony makes myself for that reason...however almost all cine cameras don't really have ibis. The codec selection is because most people using this camera shoot the highest one by default because it's already a much more compressed format than raw. If I'm using a lens like the EZ-22-60 Zoom...not really very straightforward to rig that to the FX3 either.
@adamouellette5971
@adamouellette5971 Год назад
I think glancing over the d tap equipped sony batteries out there is also an unfair oversight. You don't NEED v locks on the fx6. Using the built in battery slot is properly using all of its advantages.

I really wanted to love the FX6 and I ended up returning it and getting 3 FX3's instead. Aside from the lack of built in ND Filters I can do everything much faster on FX3 at half the cost and weight. Time = Money and FX6 slows me down.

Wow, I totally thought the opposite - I can just pick up the FX6 and shoot without any rigging. Still adore the FX3 .. just wish it didn’t overheat when shooting interviews for longer than 60 minutes and let you turn off noise reduction (also ridiculous Sony didn’t include shutter angle or proper exposure tools on a “cine-line” camera) - I think if Sony could take care of those shortcomings and make an FX3 style camera with electronic VND and no IBIS we’d have a nearly perfect camera

I absolute don't agree! The FX6 not only has the build in ND filter with the bokeh control, but the better looking picture, the way better handling and the much more professional look. For the benefits of the FX3 I use an A7IV instead which has the sharper picture because of its 7k to 4k downsampling, a great photo quality with its 33mp sensor and even a better look than the FX3 which matches perfectly to the FX6. Just look at all of the comparison videos on RU-vid! And it is cheaper than the FX3. With the combination of the FX6 and the A7IV you can leave the A7IV mounted on a gimbal with wideangle lenses and use the FX6 on a tripod or handheld wit telephoto lenses.

Wow some really great points about the FX6 such as the lack of codecs that I didn't know about! A lot of these reasons are why we went for the FX3 over the FX6, I love the FX6 form factor, as we also used to have an FS5 however I remember with that camera that even though its larger, its still hard to have a stable shot above 50mm due to lack of IBIS. The other issue I've had in the past with the FS7 was the monitor port breaking, because its hard to pack down I've also been a bit worried about the monitor cable or port breaking in transport. I think we all want an FX6 because it looks more 'pro' and has dials and form factor we think we need however after using an FS7 and FS5 for years I can tell you the FX3 is such a joy to use and pretty much the perfect camera (minus ND filters).

I have an FX6 and FX3 and never use IBIS on the FX3. I know a lot of people love the Sony IBIS but for me there’s something off about the motion cadence. In my experience, it’s better to take out the micro jitters naturally using a good shoulder rig or EasyRig, or just building the camera up so it’s heavier. Then you still have the option to use Catalyst Browse or throw a 1% warp stabilizer on to clean up any little imperfections. The end result is much more pleasing and natural than using IBIS. Although I recently learned that the unpaid version of Catalyst Browse can only export 8-bit footage so that’s a deal breaker.

The FX3 can provide the "EXACT" same end result image quality...and more...that the FX6 does. The biggest advantage that the FX6 has that the FX3 cannot compete with?....is that the FX6 looks sooooooooo damn COOL to paying customers. Well, for the main target audience of the FX6 (which is broadcast or bigger productions), the IBIS is pretty much unwanted. FX3 is more for the youtuber crowd or run&gun solo operators like weddings. But anything bigger budget, show up with an FX3 and you'll be laughed at since you are missing basics like SDI. I contacted Sony Cine support about this. They said the codec limitations are an issue with the MXF container. For some reason you can have 1080p 10-bit in Long-GOP, but not 4K 10-bit in Long-GOP. It's quite disappointing that it's lacking a 4K 10-bit Long-GOP option. Add onto that, the internal variable ND doesn't work with CPL filters, which I rely upon a lot. Then there's the audio... the FX3 has 4 channels of audio built into the handle, and an ⅛" on the body... it's frustrating that the FX6 only has 2 inputs via the handle (not including the built in scratch mic). Then, there's the issue that the FX6 cannot be remotely triggered via bluetooth or USB-C like the FX3, so while on a gimbal you have to manually press record on the camera instead of using a button on your gimbal.

Hi Chris, I appreciate your videos and your great work. I must agree to disagree on this one though. I rented both for a couple of days and ended up with WAY more amazing shots using the FX6 rather than the FX3. The ease of use of the FX6 makes taking amazing footage so easy. To me the FX6 is a much better tool and is a different league compared to the fx3. Comparing these two cameras may actually be misleading to people who haven’t tried them. My advice for anyone considering either one is to rent both for a couple of days and then decide which one you prefer. One cannot base a purchase decision by watching reviews. Try them then decide. I tried both and ended up buying an FX6. I mostly use my FX6 on a tripod and don’t shot handheld. For that use the FX6 is better than the FX3. If handheld shooting is your thing then the FX3 is probably better. Anyway stop reading comments and watching review and rent both of them to make a better informed decision.

I remember I purchased a fx6 and was so exciting about it, but after some time of use, I was so pissed by that huge top and side handle, they r just so massive, and as you mentioned the no ibis was painful because I use a lot of cinema lens. One day, I tried my friend's c70, and was amazed by how it just got everything inside that body, no need to rig it up, no massive accessories, electronic stabliz was awsome, and 2 slr on the side of camera, the camera can easily fit in any bag. DGO sensor was great. the only thing I was consider as trouble was s35 sensor size. but simply use wider lens, problem solved, and s35 lens are way smaller. so I sold my fx6 and get a c70, happy with it for many jobs ever after. I also purchased fx3 for gimble and personal use because it's so small. I agree wityh your opionion, fx3 can do pretty much anything fx6 can do , the biggest advantage for fx6 currently in my opinion, is "pro looking" lol. FX6 is not consider a bad camera at all. but it's just way too much trouble to use it. If I really need a big or pro set up, I simply hire more crew and use arri or red.

This is totally subjective to what you shoot. For my needs, the FX6 is the better option (specifically because of the VND). Also, shooting 135 mil handheld is such an odd example cause no sane production would ask for that. You’re on sticks every time. I do have an A7siii and enjoy using it, but it’s always reserved as a B cam or gimbal cam.

Idk man.. with a lighter rig like the fx3, you get even more shake and jitters. And now you need to get duplicate NDs for each lens, remember each ND, buy an XLR jack which starts balacing upwards, then a potential monitor which also stacks even higher. Now you're holding enough pieces to create your frankenrig as long as you don't forget any of the detachable parts.

As someone who has both, definitely FX6 is better imo. The ONLY thing I like the fx3 for is the accessibility to take it with me everywhere with ease in case I can get some good shots whereas to take the fx6 I have to do some planning and can’t just pull it out to shoot real quick. But still, Fx6 is better overall imo

I have one essential question. Do you see the difference in image quality between the two cams regarding the Codecs and file sizes? What do u think is the minimum of file size for a 10bit 422 24p 4k Codec you should have? Is 200mbps enough? And why are the files so huge on the fx6? Thx for the answers and nice video!
@marcusthompson666

200mbps in what codec is the question. Generally 200mbps is bare minimum you want for UHD 10b. Especially in LOG. If shooting higher frame rate you must multiply the bitrate.

It took me 9 months to get the FX6. It just came in two weeks ago. I came from a GH5. It is one of the best cameras I’ve used. It has created so many different opportunities. IBIS is incredible with it. I just shot two weddings with the FX6. Not having IBIS like the GH5 is very interesting, but with the setup I have, it is still somewhat stable. I have the Tilta Kit with a CoreSWX 150W Battery and the SmallHD 702 Touch on hot shoe on the handle. It has worked out a bit. The main problem I have with the FX6 is the codec. I wish there was an option to switch an .MOV or .MP4 codec like the FX3 and A7SIII. For weddings and fast projects, a smaller 10-bit format would be great. I hope a firmware update comes to correct it.

There are times when the fx6 is on a tripod while people working on the set. The FX3 should not be on for long periods on because it overheats and little batteries inside. I'm thinking about getting an FX6 but listening to what people say about the FX3 or FX30. The main problem I found, with that form factor, is the inability to see what is going on. On a sunny day you can't see what is on that little screen. You can't see what is in focus, what the exposure is framing nada. You need a video camera to film video. To make them usable you need to rig them u to look like a cinema camera.
@danielstassen813
@danielstassen813 Год назад
That’s exactly what I experienced when I rented an FX3! The little screen is difficult to see in sunlight. And, the touch focus on such a little screen is frustrating. No issue with the screen of the FX6. I never miss a shot with it. With the fx3 I found myself struggling to get the shot trying to touch focus with my big fingers on a hard to see screen. Rent the FX6 you will likely love it unless you shoot weddings and real estate

Hey Mark, If your focus is videography, than I'd recomend saving up for a A7SIII, or an FX3. The FX30 is fine, but the super 35 sensor might throw off the focal length when paired with full frame glass (Not really an issue, just something to note before filming). The A7IV is great if you plan on shooting both photo and video, but ONE thing to note is that the A7IV has insane rolling shutter and I wouldn't recomend using it for movement shots. Hope this helps.

@@danielstassen813 I own both cameras and can tell you just like the OP said, its not a "better" camera, its different for a different type of consumer or aspiring film maker. You're not getting an FX6 to do the jobs that he is stating. It's not that you cant do it but the question is why? The body is the biggest factor as to why you're also getting the camera but here it's presented as a negative, again its complaining about things that make 0 sense in context to what the camera is and who its for.
