INTRO:
Well, I wanted to make a review and started working on a talking head type of video and decided it just wasn’t my style. I actually strongly dislike review videos where you barely see any footage or it’s just video of the person talking, or of nature and cats...So, I decided to type out my review and if you’d like to read it - great! If not hit play and just enjoy the footage.
DYNAMIC RANGE & COLOR SCIENCE:
The dynamic range is just about on par with all modern cinema cameras at this stage of the game. At 800iso in SLOG3 you can see how it compares to the Alexa at time code: 03:31. Pretty much identical. And this is with my custom LUT which brings down the highlights and smooths them out a bit just FYI. Sony claims the camera has 15+ stops of range at 800iso. They haven’t put the specs out on the range for 12,800 ISO. Unfortunately, I haven’t done enough tests to say how the two ISOs compare in that aspect. I do plan on doing that in the future though.
As far as color science goes you can see also how it compares to the Arri in that same clip. They’re quite similar and you could easily match them in post without an issue. I think color science can definitely be subjective now days. Cameras have just come so far in that regard. I’ve shown people both the FX6 and Alexa clips side by side and usually it’s 50/50 which people prefer. It just comes down to what you put in front of the camera.
ISO:
Sony doesn’t exactly say the FX6 is a dual base ISO, but some places they do. I will say compared to the FX9 the FX6 is not dual based. At ISO 12,800 the image is quite noisy. And if you plan on underexposing at all or want more info in your shadows -- you want to stray away from the high base in my opinion. Even at a good exposure you’re gonna need to do some de-noising. In fact I’ve been having to de-noise the 800 as well. But, having the flexibility to shoot at either ISO is great. The high base is especially useful if you’re looking to shoot at 240p.
RESOLUTIONS/CROPS/FRAME RATES:
There’s three different resolutions you can shoot in. There’s 4K, 3.8k, and 1080.
3.8k and 1080p are gonna give you the full sensor height and width while the 4K is going to give you a slight crop. I haven’t really noticed much chromatic aberration at 1080 like you see in the FX9 from skipping lines YET. However it is very prevalent at 240p in high contrast ratios. You can shoot up to 120p in 3.8k however and avoid this issue if you’re still looking to do slow mo. The ability to shoot at higher frame rates without having to crop in or get a lower quality image is one of the main reasons I got the FX6 and I’m loving the speed at which I can quickly change between them.
CODEC:
Codec wise I’ve only shot at XAVC-I. It’s 4:2:2 10 bit. I used this a lot with the FX9 as well. The codec is a lot more flexible in post than I thought it’d be. You can usually push your white balance quite a bit and pull colors slightly if you’re trying to dial in a look. If you’re trying to get more of a heavy grade I would 100% monitor with the LUT in camera and dial your settings in on the day however.
You can record RAW out of the SDI port of the camera and atomos just announced their converter so you can use the Ninja V if you do feel the need to shoot RAW. I think it is definitely something I will invest in in the future.
ERGONOMICS:
I really like the camera body. With a nice lens on it - it’s the perfect weight between a DSLR and a heavy cinema camera. You don’t get any micro shakes and you feel like you can put the camera anywhere. There’s plenty of mounting points and I actually find myself not having the top handle on - only using the side handle with the monitor mounted on the top. It’s just the perfect form factor for me. The camera doesn’t need a lot of power so you don’t need to mount a heavy vmount unless you’re adding a teradek or follow focus. But that’s not the size of productions I’m intending on using this camera for. This is my lower budget run and gun camera. If you need to build it out for those higher level jobs though you can.
AUTOFOCUS
I thought the auto focus was going to be a gimmick that I’d never use, but I actually found myself using it quite a bit. Kind of blows my mind how well it works. I see myself using it on many jobs. Just gotta invest in more lenses that support it…
FINAL THOUGHTS:
Sony really found a great blend between a cinema camera and a DSLR. With SDI, HDMI, timecode, XLR inputs, built in ND, high frame rates, and great form factor I think the FX6 will be used for a very long time on just about every type of production. I’m looking forward to using it more.

First when I clicked on your fx6 video I was like wow this is professional paused at 1:23 read your description and I support your intro 100% I hate talking heads I skip to parts where footage is shown. I would rather watch a video like this with a voice over on top that would be really great showing visuals while talking about the camera review. Well done you outdid everybody else mostly wannabe cinematographers you havve earned a new sub looking forward to more of fx6 content

This is the best commercial for the FX6 Sony could ever hope for. And what I like about the review aspect is that you use the camera with different types of lighting so that people can see how it actually performs in those situations. That’s very useful information . And this video along with the others make a very compelling case for getting this camera.

I have a couple of questions: For me, the most important thing in the camera is COLORS. 1) Sony A7SIII can achieve the same picture as in your video. 2) Which is better to choose Sony a7SIII or FX6? 3) Is the FX6 worth the money? P.S. insanely beautiful video, I watched it 10 times already)))) Thank you very much for your answers)))
@Bendoescamera
@Bendoescamera 3 года назад
Yes I would say the A7siii can achieve the same picture. From what I've seen the A7siii just has a bit more sharpening, contrast, and tint to its image. Which you can fight with filters/lenses/ and color grading. You can match just about any camera to another if you have enough knowledge in grading. Check out Steve Yedlin's website for proof of that. If you have the money the FX6 is obviously a no brainer to me. It has all the needs for every level of production. Worth the money! Glad you enjoyed the video!

I can confirm how well the FX6 matches an Alexa mini very closely. I am shooting a month long project and we had the FX6 as B Cam to the Alexa, with a custom LUT on the FX6. After the first two days production gave the green light to just use 2x FX6’s. That full frame sensor is very nice and It handles highlights very well.

Easily my favorite FX6 footage thus far, digging this style of review I got an FX6 recently and want to build a set of vintage glass. I see you use the Contax Zeiss, what are your thoughts on the Contax vs Leica R? I’m trying to decide between these / discern whether the Leica are worth 2 to 3 times the price of the Contax
@Bendoescamera
@Bendoescamera 3 года назад
I think the difference between the two lenses is subjective and dependent on the look you're shooting for and/or are most favorable with. From my experience the Leica's have a warmer, sharper and cleaner look. I've used both - but I've used the Contax and Superspeeds A LOT more. I love how soft they are while still keeping their sharpness with whats in focus. It gives a really nice organic fall off to the image. Plus, they are low contrast which helps when shooting digitally with some cameras. You can't go wrong with either lens set! From my own personal experience I have decided it's better to own glass that is cleaner and sharper. Because it lends itself to more projects and you'll be using them more. I was forcing my contax on jobs that the story didn't really need them for- simply because they were the only lenses I had for a while. And they looked great - but mechanically it made things more difficult and it didn't make sense for the narrative. So, for commercial work now days I'm generally using more clinical lenses and then adding filters to dial in the look I want.

@zacharykepler3567
@zacharykepler3567 3 года назад
@@Bendoescamera Thanks for the input, it brought some clarity. When you say it’s better to own cleaner / sharper glass are you saying the Leica might be more suited for more projects, or do you mean more like a modern cine lens? Also I think the Leica vary in how “vintagey” their look is depending on the year they were made / serial number - I was looking at ones from late 70’s to early 80’s so they may not be as sharp as the ones you used if they were the newer ones from the late 80’s to mid 90’s. Thanks again for the awesome response

Definitely the best footage I've seen from this camera. Great work! What made you go with the FX6 over something like the BMPCC6K? I'm back and forth between the two right now and was originally going to go for the BM due to the superior image quality (in terms of being more organic/filmic) and very "video-esque" footage you see on RU-vid with the FX6, but now I'm re-thinking my purchase decision because of this video edit: One more question: do you feel the FX9 would be worth the price jump over the FX6? Or would you just go with the FX6 these days?

For me, the Sony system works better. Especially from a lens stand point. You can adapt the mount into any lens mount you want because of its short flange distance. So, you’re able to use whatever lens you’d like depending on your scale of production. Also, the camera has all the professional inputs/outputs/audio/timecode options you need. The monitor is not connected to the body (not a fan of when it is. Really limits you when you’re operating). Plus it’s full frame which is something I was looking to invest in. I think video esque comes down to the shooter and whats in the frame. Not always all dependent on the camera. Especially now days. The pocket does have the advantage of having compressed RAW however. It really comes down to your budget and shooting style. I’ve owned just about every black magic camera except for the 6k over the years and have loved them. If it makes sense for your production type and how much you have to invest - there is no better value.

I don’t think the FX9 is worth the price jump. However, I personally love the image of the FX9 out of the box. It has things I can’t technically explain without sounding like an idiot that make it more cinematic. But it is. It’s just a cleaner, sharper image that a certain depth to it. With that being said - you can match any camera now days. It’s just a matter of how much work you want to put in. The FX6 has everything the FX9 has to offer plus more. For half the price and half the size. Also you can shoot RAW without the insane add on. The 25% image quality difference just isn’t worth the price difference for what I’m using the camera for.

@@Bendoescamera Same here regarding the image out of the box. I'm an image quality nerd, so the closer I can get to that "filmic" or "cinematic" look out of the box, the better. There's definitely something to the FX9 image that is different from the 6. It has a beautiful "texture" to it. Like you said it's difficult to describe it, but I see what you're seeing. I could grab one brand new for 9.8k, but like you said the value of the 6 is hard to deny plus the ability to mount it on a smaller gimbal is handy at times. What do you primarily shoot if you don't mind me asking?

Amazing footage. I had been looking for footage like this before I bought it cause this is what I feel it’s intended for. As soon as I got it home I was blown away. 2 Quick questions though. What kind of glass are you shooting with and what lighting are you using? Also are you applying your custom LUT while shooting? I kept seeing so much footage on RU-vid that looks so videoish making me think this camera looks “plasticky” but I figured it’s because of most YT creators light in a blog style.
@Bendoescamera
@Bendoescamera 3 года назад
I'm monitoring with my LUT when I shoot and then just applying it in post and that's all I'm doing in terms of color grading. i might add a bit more saturation here and there or a little more green but that's about it. I think the plastic feel definitely comes down to light quality, lenses, and color grading. so yeah - more of that blog style. Honestly that's why I made this video. It upsets me seeing mainstream RU-vid reviewers shooting mediocre footage that doesn't show you what the camera is really capable of. I think you can use most all of the cameras today in the market and shoot amazing things. Hopefully people will start focusing on their stories and less on the gear because the cameras are all top notch at this point. It really comes down to your shooting style and what type of productions you're working on. Here are the lenses: 00:00-00:21 = Contax Zeiss 50mm/28mm + Cinebloom Filter 00:21-00:23 = Sigma 35mm (e-mount) 00:23-00:47 = Contax Zeiss 50mm/28mm + Cinebloom Filter 00:47-01:39 = Sigma 35 (e-mount) 01:39-02:03 = SLR Magic 32mm Hyperprime 02:03-02:20 = Contax Zeiss 50mm/28mm + Cinebloom Filter 02:20-02:50 = SLR Magic 32mm Hyperprime 02:50-02:54 = Contax Zeiss 50mm + Cinebloom Filter 02:54-03:06 = Sigma 35 (e-mount) 03:06-03:27 = SLR Magic 32mm Hyperprime 03:27-03:33 = SLR Magic 50mm Hyperprime For the comparison shots the FX6 had the Hyperprime 32mm and the Alexa had the 25mm

@@Bendoescamera i bought your LUT the other day brother. Loaded it in davinci and i love it!! How do i go about monitoring with it in the FX6 though? i have some tried to load the osiris luts i have in it but they didnt work for some reason. My other question is once im able to get the LUT working in camera and i turn it on through MLUT, whats the IRE exposure i should be looking for as far as african american skin and caucasian skin? should they stay the same as the s709 lut or are the levels different? Thanks
@Bendoescamera
@Bendoescamera 3 года назад
@@ILaxative thanks for purchasing! so glad you're loving it. I would follow the steps from here to load it in: sonycine.com/articles/painting-the-fx6-s-output-in-custom-mode-using-luts/ ------ for other LUTs - if they're not loading in, I believe they have to be 17x or 33x cube LUTs in order to work. As far as IRE goes - I'm not really a numbers guy when it comes to that kind of stuff...I generally just go by eye with a monitor I trust as to what looks good. But, it is how I started out. I would test it out and just see what works best for the tone and exposure you'd like to have for the project you're currently shooting. With that being said, the LUT is designed to transform SLog3 to s709 though, so I would strive for numbers similar to how you would shoot like that. Let me know how it goes and what works out!
