I cannot thank you enough for providing such a great video. Precise and to the point, I followed all your instructions explicitly and I’m finally able to listen to my vintage records after 18 years of my turntable being in storage. Was so excited when I saw that tone arm move. I bought this originally in 1985. Great job dude

My same turntable was stopping part way through playing a side. Got the belt from your provided link and I'm super pleased it did the trick. I'm not DIY and was ready to get rid of the turntable but the job today took all of % minutes...at least I could work a screwdriver on the 9 screws! Thanks very much for the great video. - Mike in Sonora CA

I really lucked out by finding your video. Thank you so very much for the walk-through. I just inherited this record player from my aunt and was heartbroken to find I couldn't get it to work. After watching your video, it's now good as new and playing her favorite tunes! So appreciate you doing this. Take care

I juste changed the tonearm belt for my PS-FL99 (same as PS-FL77 and others I guess), now the arm is progressing smoothly step by step like new. Easy to change from the bottom !

thank you so much for this video. it did the trick for my PS-LX500. now, any idea why the arm will deploy but not lower onto the LP? thanks in any case..
@DIYBenzGarage
@DIYBenzGarage 4 года назад
Did it lower before you replaced the belt? There is a lever that holds the tone arm up. A solenoid coil lowers that lever when energized. If power doesn't get to the coil, it will not lower. The square cover behind the tone arm comes off with 2 small screws. see if you can trace the wires end to end. Make sure a wire didn't get broken when you were replacing the belt, or no wires got disconnected at the front panel buttons. That's the place to start.

Thanks for showing how to replace the belt. My PS-LX500 is dropping the needle a few millimetres too soon. Is there a way I can adjust this?

I have the same turntable. The back rectangular part of the tonearm scrapes the record and it does it’s a little give in going up and down the whole back piece. Would you know how to adjust that so that I can lift it up so it away from the record. That’s the only problem I have with mine it is old as well. But it works like new except for that one problem

It's listed as the same belt for both turntables. If you have the same symptom, 99.99999% chance this is it. My TT runs flawlessly now.

Question........does this turntable have specialized cables that you have to connect to a specialized receiver? I've replaced the tonearm belt installed a new stylus and lightly oiled the rail with 3-in-1 household oil. The tonearm moves left and right freely but doesn't raise or lower and the platter is not turning
@DIYBenzGarage
@DIYBenzGarage Год назад
No, it's a very ordinary turntable. That is going to take some investigative work. It could be a bad control board, or you could have several unrelated issues, bad TT motor, and a tone arm problem. My first thought is something got disconnected inside, second suspect is bad capacitors at this age. Check some of the other repair videos others have done on this unit.

Awesome video.... I just picked up this turntable. the sound quality with the system is awesome. I am wondering if should consider changing out the cartridge and needle? It seem to have the original Sony Cartridge and stylus. Everything sounds great... but just wondering if should change it out anyways..??
@DIYBenzGarage
@DIYBenzGarage 3 года назад
That sony stylus may be hard to find, and you may need to settle for conical. I put my old Ortofon OMP10 onto this TT and it blows me away, but Ortofon no longer makes a P-mount. I also have this cart: www.amazon.com/Audio-Technica-AT85EP-Turntable-Cartridge/dp/B077QG5QSJ/ref=asc_df_B077QG5QSJ/?tag=hyprod-20&linkCode=df0&hvadid=312305907549&hvpos=&hvnetw=g&hvrand=17682145582560915836&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=c&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=9007356&hvtargid=pla-599646081324&psc=1 Excellent sound, excellent price. I think that would be a big upgrade over the sony.

@@DIYBenzGarage Thanks, I noticed lately that the "SSSS" seem to be more pronounced.. seeing that the cartridge and stylus were the original, I did change out the cartridge and stylus to the Audio Technica AT85EP. It seems to be doing the same thing. Wondering could the tracking be off? I don't see anywhere where that can be adjusted. I had my son listen and he says there is nothing wrong... that he does not hear what I am hearing... LOL. Maybe it is just me...LOL
@DIYBenzGarage
@DIYBenzGarage 3 года назад
I have read that a cartridge has a break in period, I don't know how true that is. Give the cart 20-30 hours of play and see if it improves. Could also be the source material, the amp or the speakers (my Klipsch are a little harsh). You may be like me, I'm very sensitive to that "S" sound, often refered to as ""sibilance". Some people don't notice it. And yeah, the whole selling point on P-mount turntables was there is no adjustment, jut plug and play.
@nuttyprofessor

I believe the replacement stylus is 4213-d6 assuming it's the original Sony vl-44G factory installed cartridge

Thanks this was helpful I have a Sony PS LX 510 I’m gonna try to find the service manual and see that I find the correct belt. Update I just bought one on eBay, at least it has a picture and I can see it’s a small belt. The link given above leads to a belt that is more than 2 inches in diameter I don’t think that’s going to work. And the RU-vid video in the link above shows a tone arm belt that’s being replaced and the thing is almost the diameter of the entire turntable platter I don’t think that’s the right one
@DIYBenzGarage
@DIYBenzGarage 2 года назад
On the link above they list the same belt for the 510 & 520

Thanks. I’m gonna buy one today. But in the meantime I’m still playing records by spinning the wheel with my hand manually. I got about a minute of audio before the needle gets stuck. Fun stuff

Hey man can you give me some tips? I just replaced the belt on one of these and can now manually move the arm with the buttons. But whenever it tries to play a record, the arm clearly has trouble following the track on it’s own, causing bad skips. Any advice?
@DIYBenzGarage
@DIYBenzGarage Год назад
You will have to watch it and determine when the cause actually happens. Did you lube the rails like I did so it's not dragging?. Check all pulleys and lines for the tracking system. The tracking doesn't actually follow the record, the arm is floating and has a sensor in it. When the arm moves toward the center, it triggers a sensor that turns on the motor to move the whole assembly toward the center. If it's not triggering properly the assembly won't move and the record will skip. If it moves too far it would drag the arm across the record and skip.
@DIYBenzGarage
@DIYBenzGarage Год назад
The assembly should move in little steps or "nudges". This may help: www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=&cad=rja&uact=8&ved=2ahUKEwihuZPbsIX6AhUfkYkEHXjKBIMQFnoECAgQAQ&url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.vintageshifi.com%2Frepertoire-pdf%2Fpdf%2Ftelecharge.php%3Fpdf%3DSony-PS-LX520-Service-Manual.pdf&usg=AOvVaw1hWOUTvGFmJr19Nln9c7Sm

Hello mate, I own a PS-LX 500 turntable. Looks like new and works perfectly except for lowering the tonearm. Now to my question; can you set or influence in any way that the tonearm is lowered gently and does not fall unchecked onto the LP?
@DIYBenzGarage
@DIYBenzGarage Год назад
It sounds like your damping mechanism is stuck in the down position, It may just need to be freed up. The tone arm is "damped". This is typically done with a heavy silicone oil in the damping mechanism. Maybe yours has seeped out, or it's damped in some other way. You will need to take the square cover off behind the tone arm and have a look at what type of mechanism it has. Here is a link to the service manual. www.manualscenter.com/manuals/sony/pslx500-service-manual.html Shouldn't be too hard once you figure out how it's supposed to work.

@DIYBenzGarage

Problem like that can be hard to track down. Bad motor (doubtful). Bad sensor somewhere? Bad capacitor? Watch this guys video, there is a mini fuse on the circuit board. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-SIYcaBhvj4w.html First look for anything obvious, broken wire, burned component etc.
