Sony PS-LX520 Turntable Breakdown!

I went to listen to the Sony PS-LX520 turntable earlier this week and found it mostly dead. This video explains my troubleshooting, although I was barking up the wrong tree at first. Later, I did find the exact problem with some careful circuit examination. A little circuit protector failed.
I have no affiliation with StereoManuals.com other than as a reasonably happy customer.

Another very interesting video. Patiently awaiting to see if the little circuit protector brings the TT back to life. ~Cheers~ B.Champagne

As always a great video! Hopefully you will be able to get this old Sony going again with a simple new circuit protector!

Mine had the same problem. These pesky ic protectors blew twice on mine. The first one i installed blew almost instantly. Then i made some search and found some of higher value. It worked fine ever since!

11 years ago I had the same problem with my PS-LX520, same part defective. I replaced it with another and it worked for few minutes then blew again. I tried a direct wire and it went dead. Now 11 years later i'm trying ti fix it. If yours is still working flawlessly the the excess current was drawn by the old capacitors. I will try to replace mines before proceeding with a new N10 ic protector.

@uxwbill sure, old electronic is really a lot better than newer ones! This tv we own is a 27" and we still have 1960's Sinudyne Mod 260 De Luxe tube radio that works like new, only the tuning indicator broke down (i repaired it with a new cotton wire) Anyway keep going, i like your video! :)

i notice you have some harman/kardon HK195'a in the background! I have these speakers on my computer, they sound very well for not having a subwoofer! if only i could find out where to get the optional one...seems they have a plug for it.

great video if you could let me know where you get your parts from . I am disabled but was in the NAVY for 6 years on submarines and still love trying to fix things. I have a local Radio shack but I have found they are carrying less and less of electronic parts. I have a Old Harmon Karmen that has a bad power Ic that I cant find anywhere Thanks

thanks for posting that video! Mine got some similar trouble PLUS the transformer seems to be broken... can you tell what output-spechs the primary translation board T901 (the transformer) got? That would help me alot, cause i cant find anything in the web... (even not in the service manual) thanks again, and keep up the good work!!

+uxwbill thank you very much for your response! I will see what I can do with a variable autotransformer. Wanna get that thing back to work, because I like it very much. just in case: If you happen to open that turntable anytime in the future and you could measure that specs for me, I would appreciate that a lot!! ;-)

I have a keboard that just started buzzing and nit working so I opened it up and it had a blown cap so i used some clips to momentarily put a new one on and it still didnt work either the blown cap was shorting it out or could there be an ic protector blown too?

On the Sony ps-lx520, where did you get the cult protector? And what is the part, it looks like a transistor. I have the same exact problem. I short across the leads and the turntable come alive. Do not know why it blew thouh.

Thanks! Working on an abused 510 right now. Logic and arm works (after gluing string, re-stringing the track, and adding a new belt), but the table wont turn. Seems like a power issue. The power board in this model is flipped and harder to get at, but i feel your diagnosis for that 520 is the same as this 510's.... im going to check. Update: not found on the power board, there are 2 transistors that are getting the signal to turn on, but aren't... going to stare at the service manual for a bit before I make any determinations. All voltages are correct, just main platter not turning... will update again...

I'll hazard a guess that if the transistors are getting their turn on signal and not responding, that they've probably failed. I never had to dive into the actual platter motor driver on mine. Looking back on it now, I think the inrush limiters on mine were also bad, as the fuse did blow one more time. I've long since donated this turntable, but I think I might still have the service manual somewhere.

@@uxwbill on the board, there are 4 variable resistors. After looking at the service manual, and tracing the circuits, there were two things I noticed. Power at all the test points in the motor's driver & speed regulation was too high, and couldn't get past the first 2 vari-resistors. I cleaned and 'worked' them, but still the same. So I bypassed them and the table works perfect!... I've retraced the circuit to see why that works, and I don't know. All the voltages are now normal when the motor draws current. I don't want to say the vari-resistors are bad, because they're not (they do what they're designed to do) and I think their purpose is to even the pulses to the motor halves (bypassing one vari-resistor, the motor will work with a push-start, but can be easily stopped). Maybe they're to limit when the current gets higher at times??? Still makes no sense to me because it draws current from the same point, and that point gets the voltage it's supposed to be after the vari-resistors... whatever, it works now 😃

so if you have this kind of service manual you can fix anything?
@GeneraleRus

@uxwbill well, sure i'm explaned in a bad way, sorry for my bad english. I say that because at home we have an old 1988 Sony Trinitron Tv Color (RX-2 Chassis) that have that kind of service manual, really detailed, but never used, luckly that tv still works even after 22 years

I just got this unit. I was considering changing out the stylus & cartridge. You say you changed yours out... what did you change yours out to? Will any "P" mount cartridge work? I was looking at the Ortofon RED & BLUE "P" mounts. Would they work even though they are a different style shape?
@uxwbill
@uxwbill 3 года назад
As far as I'm aware, any P-Mount cartridge will work. I used an Audio-Technica cartridge on mine. It was cheaper than getting a stylus for the cartridge it came with.

I meant circuit protector. I will try to find one at my local surplus parts place. I think the motor may have dragged it down. I am going to change the tonearm belt and re-lube the spindle.

I had the same issue with this model recently. Though I have cleaned and greased the bar, I still seem to be having the issue of the needle sticking. I can gently push the back end a long and it goes for another song or two, any suggestions?

***** Thanks a lot! I'll definitely try that. Was it a standard belt you ordered? Any advice on replacing it would be really great!

interesting. I am looking at the same unit. glitching drive motor when power button pressed. no lights on control panel. I think I will check the 6v+ and see! did you find a source for the circuit protector (should that be the same issue)
@uxwbill
@uxwbill 2 года назад
The circuit protectors have long been discontinued and the only ones I ever found were extremely overpriced. Take a look at the inrush limiting circuit -- mine later proved not to be working after it blew another circuit protector. You could substitute a suitably rated fuse or if you're feeling brave/foolish, could just bypass the IC protector. I gave this turntable away some time ago, so I don't have it any longer.

I have a Fisher MT-9000 turntable that I'll never use. If you're interested I can make a video of it for you. No charge for it, just want it to go to someone who will appreciate it more than me. It's in mint condition but after I moved to my new place I noticed the platter seems to hit the frame with a light "pift...pift...pift...) one "pift" per revolution. It uses an induction motor so no belt or anything like that. A real nice piece of equipment, just not my cup of tea.

(previous comment removed due to a grammatical error) Good find! It seems that these ICP's act almost like circuit breakers except for small voltage circuit boards. If the device isn't working properly, then it should operate as an open circuit. Have you tried testing that yet? -An electrical engineering student

I don't trust linear tracking turntables besides there all P mount which sucks because you don't have many options for cartridge like 1/2 inch mount .

+Tri-County Electronics They might have been new old stock, I really don't know. They tested good and the turntable still works flawlessly to this day, although I don't use it nearly as much as I once did.
