With the A7IV and breathing compensation on, my video was bouncing in and out on zoom. I had to turn off breathing compensation, but I had it set by default on my settings. Great lens! I love carrying it with the Tamron 35-150 F2-2.8.
Looks like a nice lens for gimbal work where you could control zoom from the gimbal and internal zoom. It definitely lacks the magic of your normal 35mm shot though! Thanks for the review Gerald, great as always.

Your videos are so helpful and informative. I love the thoroughness. Other people's videos often don't cover the details I want to know. Your videos always do. Thank you.
This seems to be a really great lens to pair with the A7C. I could see putting this on the A7C and just not really ever taking it off. Great for gimbal work between the weight and ability to externally control the zoom, also one of very few zoom lenses that has an aperture ring - which makes up for the lack of a front dial on the A7C. Parfocal, minimal focus breathing, so great for video. And an internal zoom, so it shouldn't get as dirty. The main complaint is going to be that it's an F4. But I think that's a great tradeoff. This lens would be a lot bigger, heavier, and more expensive if it was a 2.8 or faster.
As a FX6 user, the release of another 16-35 without OSS (like the C lens) is not great. Even though I want the PZ and better optics, issues with producing shaky handheld video is worse. Looks like I'll be keeping the Zeiss for now (and using Clear Image Zoom where required after getting a manual framing from the zoom ring).
HAHAHA at around 5:50 his masterfully placed jab at Sony's lack of focus breathing compensation for the FX3. Brilliantly done, I could could hear the frustration in your voice.
As soon as Sony catches up on a great lineup for great PZ lenses, the broadcast world will probably start adopting smaller bodies like the FX3. Our production company has already been using FX3s, but the lenses were always an issue in the broadcast world.
How's the battery life on that thing? I've been curious to use it for our corporate stuff as we travel a lot and that form-factor is so small. But we do interviews and I don't want to be swapping out battery every 10-15 minutes.
@@AlexJenkins I've done a full 1hr show on the A7S3 on 1080p, AF on, IS off, screen brightness at -2 i believe and battery life went from 90% to 25% aprox. It's not the exact same camera but a close comparison
I can get 1.5 hours of battery life continuous recording. Battery swap out is less than 30 seconds. Turing on things like wifi or IBIS will drain the battery faster, so if you turn on airplane mode + decrease screen brightness + turn of IBIS, you get a nice chunk of battery life.
I think both parfocality and focus breathe is compensated by wire because the lens controls both zoom and focus by wire. I also think that this is the key for being so compact. However the motors and electronics need room. More that F4 may increase the diameter beyond practicality?
I hope they come out with a replacement for the FE-PZ 28-135 F4 G with similar features. You can really feel the age of that lens. The autofocus isn't the best, it isn't very parfocal and it has noticeable focus breathing. Additionally you can't crash-zoom with it as the motors are too slow.
Damn you Sony ! This looks like a great lens for gimbal work, was shooting a wedding a few weeks ago with the GM version and my arms certainly knew about it by the end!
I have the 20mm 1.8G, and for vlogging and travel videos I still think I'll keep that. I'm using clear image zoom that literally makes this a 30mm lens, and I don't need wider than 20mm. The 1.8 is too good to let go, close focusing distance and sharpness is also better. But it's definitely a good step in the right direction, power zoom is an awesome technology.
I don't own a sony camera, I have no intention to get one of this lens, I don't even understand much about full frame world, but I still love watching your videos man. The kind of break down you do is unique
Thank you Gerald for this review, don't think we really like the "by wire" choice on the zoom, but this lens is really lighter than its older sister, which is always a plus when travelling. Question regarding the focus breathing (sorry if this is off-topic from this video, but when you mentioned it at 5:58 it came up): we recently watched Jungle Cruise (with The Rock) and we noticed a very present focus breathing in some scenes. Do you think that's because they used specific lens or they add it in post (is it possible?) for some reason?
Go to see Sony go to the direction makes their new lens lighter still has great build and feature. I am waiting for other f2.8 zoom lens to be updated.

Gotta say, this is a nice addition for gimbal and drone users. But, I was hoping for a 16-35 with OSS to replace the Zeiss. I wonder if focus breathing compensation is coming all these new lightweight lenses, and for the A7SIII/FX3.
Interesting G lens for gimbal work as the zoom won’t affect the balance, great engineering from Sony. Would love to see a fast f/2.8 G Master version coming.
Wow the thing’s lighter than the 20mm 1.8, that’s insane. Also how it’s all internal zoom and it’s powered was also unexpected for me. I can imagine this lens being very popular, I’m sold.

Thx for reviewing this, i 've been looking for this lens review! looks a good addition for those who are looking for 16-35mm... so light and pretty sharp!
Awesome review as always! I'll definitely be interested when they come out with a longer PZ lens. Also glad to see and hear the MKH50 instead of a 416... not sure why shotguns became so popular on youtube
I asked Sony awhile back about zoom resetting on power off for a different PZ lens. They said it wasn't possible to change that. Huge oversight IMO, and should be fixable in firmware.
2 very different lenses. The F4 goes to 16mm and 35mm, it's parfocal, no focus breathing, has a power zoom, and super fast AF. I'm sure it can handle the 30fps bursts with the A1 too, it's also much smaller and lighter than the Tamron, and has a ton of controls that the Tamron is lacking. The Tamron does f2.8 though. Just very different lenses.
Well, yeah I think it can be quite useful for gimbal work. I'm not really into wide-angle stuff, therefore I was thinking that the difference between 16 and 35 isn't something I couldn't compensate with getting closer to an object. I totally see the PZ function for gimbal work in a range between 35-70 maybe 70-100ish - but that's just my pov :)
That is useful to know! Power zoom, not extending, great, even for steadycam. Given how short it is, I'm not too worried about OSS. But at this point, having the 24mm GM and planning to buy the 14mm GM, I'd probably get more use out of Sony's 24-105mm with the OSS for video...?
Nice Malkovich reference! Looks like a great lens, good to see Sony can address focus breathing, and adapt their focus technology for a zoom function. That said, the Zeiss was my first FE lens and I was never disappointed with it. I did ultimately upgrade to the GM version for more flexibility in low light.
It's interesting that both of these lenses are competing in the same space, and that is 16-35mm lenses geared for video. The Zeiss I think still holds a place there. Although Gerald doesn't do a lot of work requiring OSS, if you're looking for an all day lens for shooting urban environments AND you're specifically a gimbal operator - then that OSS is a huge deal to help get rid of motor and hand micro jitters - getting you close to perfectly smooth movement. The big downside of the Zeiss, especially for gimbals, is that it zooms externally and is heavier than the Sony. The Sony on the other hand is also for video operators primarily, but it seems to be more focused on people that would be shooting on the lens traditionally (on sticks or handheld). With the obvious points of power zoom and being parfocal being its major advantages for that style of shooting. Its major downside is the lack of OSS (and I'm also personally not a fan of its out of focus rendering [boke]). I'd probably buy the lens based on those use cases above first. The image quality difference is negligible and the price at that level is negligible as well (although $150 isn't nothing). The neutral category for both is about what lenses you normally use. Zeiss is well known for its T* coating. If you like the Zeiss look and/or want to pair your lenses to look the same across focal lengths then buying the Zeiss is a no brainer. Let's say as an example you're shooting all on Zeiss Batis, and you want a wide-angle zoom, this is the obvious choice. And the same is true of the Sony. Sony has been making more first party lenses to fill in the gaps. So if you wanted to match all of your Sony glass more closely then that's another check mark in Sony's column for you.
Exactly... Lack of OSS is a deal breaker for me, as for a filmmaker focussed on filming skiing, running, biking etc on gimbals, following the athletes. Even if the new lens is a bit sharper and PZ woul be nice in some special moments, no thank you. For gimbal use, the OSS is HUGE difference, alsocompared to 16-35 F2,8 GM. Zeis is noticeably more stable in the same type of work.
@@andresawenko Gimbals don't correct for horizontal or vertical translation. So no matter how good your gimbal is those movements will ALWAYS be in your footage without stabilization. IBIS helps, but also having optical stabilization is certainly better.
Could always do what Brandon Li did with his A74 and 28mm on a M3 run it through catalyst browse on a 4-5% stabalisation setting. He got fantastic clips.

Got the older one used recently for under $600. Think I’ll be staying with that and not sure I would choose this new one given the choice because it just seems odd.
What a pity for me! The lack of OSS is a absolute deal breaker for me, as for a filmmaker focussed on extreme filming of skiing, running, biking etc on gimbals, following the athletes in high speed. There any part of the stabilization process if important and makes a difference! Even if the new 16-35 lens is a bit sharper and PZ woul be nice in some special moments, no, I am sorry. For gimbal use, the OSS makes HUGE difference, also compared to 16-35 F2,8 GM. Zeis is noticeably more stable in the same type of work than GM. I really hope for new version on 24-105 F4, same sharpness or sharper, with much better OSS. If it also comes without OSS, no, thank you...

What body/camera are you filming with? Between IBIS/gimbals and such a wide focal length, OSS is pretty much a non issues these days and would definitely take the smaller/lighter lens. FX6/9 with Catalyst is a painful extra step but also provides pretty amazing results.
I originally had the same concerns, but then did the math. Sony's normal IBIS is a joke, but Active Stabilization is pretty effective. With the approximate 15% crop you still get a zoom range of 18.5mm x 40.25mm, which actually works very well for me. And you're still getting about 28mp of resolution.
great review. i saw a used zeiss for around $600. however, there was something special about the sony pz, so i bought that one instead for several hundred more. it was love at first sight lol.
Gerald, have you used the APS-C 18-105 zoom. It's also a PZ lens with focus and zoom by wire. I have this lens and it is a joy to use. It also has OSS.
I have the 16-35mm gm but the size of it is a problem for handheld video and overall weight when traveling long days hikes. Do you think this new lens is way too inferior in quality or should be just fine for personal photos and few videos? Thanks
@@lucaslonghurst hi man i ve an occasion to buy it! i can t really decide with the new sigma 16-28... I do lot of video for entreprises and gimbal work. i own lot of lenses (i use my 20mm 1.8 a lot)... The power zoom+rsc2 and the compact size would be versatile. DO YOU ADVISE ME THIS LENSE? thanx a lot !
@@seblx Yes! If you don't need 2.8 and you're using it on a gimbal then it would be perfect. The balance point doesn't move with the power zoom and it's super sharp and light. Having some extra range at 35mm is nice and if you need bokeh you have your 20mm 1.8. I'd say go for the Sony. It will also hold value better than Sigma although they do make great lenses as well.
2:15 I have this lens and the focal length does not reset to 16mm when I turn the camera off. Maybe that was just a pre-production quirk, or maybe mine is bugged out. Can someone else confirm?
I am using this as well. A great lens voor photo and video. Later I bought the 24mm GM but hardly use it because this thing is more versatile and I don’t see much of a difference. Usability of F1.4 is only for specific cases.
@@wvansluisveld3011 I debated and purchased the Sony 20 1.8 for indoor w/out flash gimbal work. The 20 should be a GM, it’s got the same build quality. Also have a 6400 with Laowa 9 that works extremely well.
@@keystonebrotherb in hindsight that would probably have been a better purchase. My 24mm also sometimes generates an unpleasant sound in videos recorded using the internal mic. Not sure why. I had it checked and they concluded it operates as it should. The focus breathing is very prominent as well. The main reason why I got the 24mm is because I was able to obtain it for a good price and for general purpose I like 24mm better. I also have 35mm F1.8 which is great, but it is not my preferred focal length.
So my question is, does a F4 still have a place in modern photography/videography? Every time I find a new person in instagram or RU-vid, it seems like they ONLY use 2.8 or lower. But as a normal person who has other things he has to purchase in life, F4 lenses are SOOOO much cheaper for me.
For me, given the excellent high ISO performance of newer cameras, the question is whether f2.8 zooms have a place in modern photography. If I need shallow depth of field, f2.8 does not cut it--I'll use a prime. f2.8 is the ugly middle sister now--does not really do anything well. f4 zoom lenses are substantially lighter and cheaper, and f1.8/f1.4 primes are also much lighter and cheaper (typically), and much faster to boot.
my 24-105 f4 oss is on my camera 24/7. For photography through the tamron 35-150 f2-2.8 would be my choice with something to fill in beneath 35mm like this lens
@@DolanDreams true. makes sense. And my Panasonic does have that feature as well and I never thought of that. I guess some people just love that bokeh effect.
@@AlexJenkins imo big apertures matter less and less the wider angle your lens is (some astro guy might crawl out of the woodwork and tell me otherwise but w/e) and if you're shooting video or not. It also depends on the type of content you're making. i.e. if it's travel videos, you want to carry less and have more in focus so F4 is more than fine.
Nice!, great lens i think, but it would be very interesting to know if yuo could control the powerzoom from a gimbal directly, that would make it possibly the best gimbal lens out there in that focal range since the size and weight and the fact that the zoom is indeed internal. could you come to know that?
Great looking lens ! but I don't see why sony doesn't make a 15 35 similar to the RF glass.. seems more practical in imo. anyways all their 2nd gen glass is gonna be incredible non the less.
