This one's a little bit different as we're looking at a Sony C6 mk 2 Betamax with the all too common servo issues. This one had both capstan and head servo issues and it was amazing just how good it was after replacing the Sanyo capacitors on the SS-9 board. The list of capacitors including what they physically look like is in the video.
The optional accessory remote features in this one too - really quite an interesting piece of kit and does have some use too.
I do have a C6 mark 1 coming up with the same (or similar) issues plus it'll need all the rubber bits and bobs replaced too so keep an eye out for that one.
I'd be great to have you like and if you'd also consider subscribing - it really does help the channel so much. Views are down somewhat due to the channel not being publicised so much by RU-vid and i know the main reason is I don't publish much but a good cup of tea takes time to brew!
Thank you so much for all your support too - it is SO appreciated and I'm going to make the channels 'intro' video very soon too!
No chapters on this one as it's short and just a single repair topic.

At my standard component dealer there are no 5000h @ 105° electrolytic capacitors under 1µF. In the motor servo area, however, you should use suitable electrolytic capacitors or Install capacitors, since there are always capacitors in analog technology that determine the correct system inertia. My boss once gave me a PHILIPS VHS recorder for tinkering with (for customer) on the table where he had installed the (stronger) winding motor that Philips wanted to use before the red pencil attack. So I came up with a circuit that inhibits the acceleration similar to the braking effect of the cassette, so that something like a balance is created. When I was looking for a "building site" for the circuit change, I found that PHILIPS had already provided the layout with holes and component designations on the servo board, but had bridged them with a wire. So I only needed to restore a prototype-like state. My first try with 1N4001, 16V100 electrolytic capacitor and 47R worked right away. Without real calculating !

I do hear what you're saying with the capacitors and I'm torn on which way to go is the best. Interesting on the Philips VHS machines. Can you remember what model it was? It wasn't a VR6462 was it?

@@MrBetaByte It's more than 22 years ago, but it had a "smooth" front with no "keyboard" and typical PHILIPS pressed aluminum engine cases. I left the google translate joke in today (Engine)
@MrBetaByte
@MrBetaByte Год назад
@@TTVEaGMXde Hmmm - maybe it had a Panasonic deck maybe? Maybe an earlier VHS machine from Philips. Yes, I do like the 'engine' Google translates to. I see that so often in translated messages sent to me and it always makes me smile.

@@MrBetaByte In any case, it was a PHILIPS drive, and the design looked like it was from the second half of the 80s, since it had no relation to the V2k devices.

Nice machine! I remember you telling me about tantalum capacitors for Sony SL 5000. Do you know which ones in particular, and what value? Thank you so much for your help, and I hope to hear from you soon!
@TTVEaGMXde
@TTVEaGMXde Год назад
Modern low ESR Electrolytic Capacitors (e.g. Panasonic FR-A series) can normally be used as a Replacement for Tantalum Capacitors.
@MrBetaByte
@MrBetaByte Год назад
It's the light blue Sanyo capacitors that need changing - probably will be similar to the C6 but I have no experience at all of the SL5000. I replace them with tantalum capacitors of good quality. A picture of the capacitors that tend to cause the issues are in the video - I did that just for you! 😊

@MrBetaByte
@MrBetaByte 9 месяцев назад

That's actually a very good question. I think they were a Europe wide machine but I'll have to do some research. Very interested to find out.

Nice one! I've got an SL-5000 with an issue where E-E signals don't work anymore (the video output doesn't display the signal coming from the video input, and nor even the signal coming from the tuner), the video from the output is just a black screen with some white flickering. E-E audio doesn't work as well. The only picture (and sound) it outputs is from the tape, during playback. Recording from either the tuner or A/V inputs doesn't work. Any ideas? I've checked everything i could think of and i'm at a dead end.

Can you try RF in and recording/ viewing that? Maybe from the output of another video recorder or set top box? Might give you a clue.

Great video. I have a Sony SL-8000 beta VCR. It has the same issue with playback. I replaced the tantalum capacitors and the tracking control potentiometer, but it’s still showing the same symptom. Is there anything else that should be replaced or adjusted?
@MrBetaByte
@MrBetaByte 8 месяцев назад
The 8000 is a bit more of a beast to the C6 and I have to say I don't have a huge amount of experience with the very early Beta decks but I would suspect possible motor issues. The main thing is that the service manual is very in-depth so check all your voltages and for the servo control voltages - they'll all give a clue as to what is faulty. All this is assuming you've changed the belts with reasonable quality ones and the tape path is clean. I will be doing an 8000 on the channel soon though so I'm sure I shall feel your pain!

Hi. Checking out your channel for the first time. I think I’ll be a repeat viewer. Regarding the little blue low value Sanyo caps. I’ve run into those on vintage audio components I’ve worked on and replaced with WIMA MKS 2 series stacked film caps (look like little red boxes) with much success. Could those be used in this instance instead of tantalum’s? On another note, excellent work. Now to decide on what to watch next.

Thank you so much and welcome! I don't see why not at all - they should last well and as long as they physically fit then yes, they should be OK. May well be something I'll try in a future video - thank you for the inspiration! 😊👌

My dad has one of these that was boxed sadly it was put in my dads cellar and has suffered from damp .i do have a mk1 bersiom that is in good condition but on playback i get no sound and only a dark grey slightly snowy picture i have no idea about how good the heads are i think it must have many other faults .I do have an slc7 with great heads just common faults and timer not working .
@MrBetaByte
@MrBetaByte Год назад
Sounds like you have a video issue on the C6, possible a bad capacitor somewhere. Timers are becoming a real issue with the C7's if they've not had the backup battery removed before they leaked.

does anybody feel cheated that the USA equivalent SL-5200 was a Hi-Fi, us PAL consumers must have dropped jaws thinking if only Hi-Fi his the PAL shelves earlier
@KR1275

NTSC hifi models used the videoheads to write and read the audio signals. For PAL machines Sony had to add 2 separate rotation audio head. That was a later technology.
@TTVEaGMXde
@TTVEaGMXde Год назад
The NTSC versions were probably always developed first, since they could be tested in real life in JAPAN and not only at the PAL "Simulator". NTSC has a higher tape head relative speed which enables high fidelity sound over video heads.
@MrBetaByte
@MrBetaByte Год назад
I couldn't put it any better than the previous comments but yes, Beta HiFi for PAL is quite different using separate heads and needing a certain quality of cassette to work smoothly as the HiFi signal was placed 'through' the tape layer between the video information and took more development time and testing as a result. Just not the bandwidth with PAL to include it with the video signal.
