In this video we take a look at a vintage 1975 Sony TC204SD stereo cassette deck. This unit has a multiple issues with sound distortion when operating a cassette tape, Flickering VU meters and non functioning bulbs. We will disassemble the unit, to allow access to the components. We can then fault find the issues and replace what is required. This should then hopefully rectify the problems.
The distortion is quite possibly a belt issue, So we will take a look inside to find out.....

Vintage & retro Sony amplifiers are getting quite collectible. They produce a good quality sound and the build quality of the units feel good.
Obviously with any older Hi-Fi equipment, They need servicing to keep working as they were intended.
This particular cassette deck was purchased recently with the issues, In the hope it can be restored back to the former condition.
These Sony systems are beginning to become quite collectible, So it is worth keeping them from going to scrap..

Good job done nicely sir😉 The 1970s aesthetics is the number one reason to own something like this.. I have a similar deck from a year later (tc-k4) but that one you won't find much info on youtube.. Thanks

Thank you for the kind comment. Yeah, I love the look of the older equipment. I probably won’t ever use it, but it matches the amplifier and tuner I have.

You're best to use a 1kHz reference tape and a device to monitor said frequency to adjust the tape speed. There's a lot of things to check on tape decks to get them to play like they used to but you can just use the line-in of a computer and a free tool.

Thanks for the additional info. I just did this one by ear and listening to the same songs on digital format. Will look in to the free tools 👍🏻

@@retfurb WFGUI is a good tool to start. Of course if you want it to be perfect lab tools like an oscilloscope is needed, but for basic repairs just by ear is fine of course!
