I have them both rn and I personally prefer the Sennheiser MTW3. Comfort: The biggest difference what was the deciding factor for me was the comfort. The MTW3's have a very comfortable fit where the earbud was resting on my ear and the wings give it an extra secure fit. The XM5's felt like they were "floating" and were only held in place by the ear tip so my ear canal has to hold the earbud where as the MTW3's actually rests on my ear as well, taking pressure of my ear canal. I've tried both for an 8,5 hour work day (with a quick 15 minute charge halfway through the day) and were I have no problems with the MTW3's at all, the XM5's gave me a sensitive spot in my ear canal after those 8,5 hours which made them painful to adjust or take in/out. For working out, the MTW3 is a clear winner as well thanks to the small wing. The XM5's were fine for weight lifting but when I did anything like boxing, jump rope, sprint, etc. they were very bad where as the MTW3 did fine at those things. Not perfect by any means but they were usable where the XM5's weren't at all. Sound: Ofc this is very subjective and I'm not a professional at this space but imo the MTW3 were the better sounding, especially the low end. Again, I'm not a professional so don't come at me if I use the wrong terminology but I'm gonna try my best. The MTW3 have a very immersive and deeper bass where the XM5's have a more shallow and sharp (not the good kind) bass which may have a bit more punch to it but because of the lack of immersiveness, they felt out of place and not as pleasant as the MTW3. The mids and highs are very similar with the slight edge to the XM5's but again because of the "problem" with the bass on them, the MTW3 just sounded more pleasant on basically every song I listened to. ANC: The XM5's are the better overall in this department (not by a huge amount) although there is this weird zooming noise very silent when nothing is playing. I'm not talking about the natural "buzzing" that ANC in general has but a zooming on top of it like it is searching for an audio source. Both were perfect for lifting weights since the clanking metal is the most important scenario where I need ANC. I personally don't really care/use the mics and transparency mode so can't give an opinion on those.
That is a fantastic point of view. I also have both. I also agree with everything that you said. I’ve yet to test it out exercising. If you like base MTW3 and loudness, it is the way to. I did find the ANC to be better on the XM5 and the highs and mids are tiny bit more crisp and expansive. The main reason I went with XM5 is MTW3, durability is terrible!!!! There are a lot of complaints of hissing and sound stop working in one ear. This happened with 2 pairs!! One failed within three months, and I got a 2nd set, happened just after a month. I would ask people not to buy the MTW3, even though it is better than the XM5 in many respects unfortunately the likelyhood that the device will fail is high and they are not cheap…
@@Balazsnyikov_Cz How long you have them? Usually they broke exactly after three months xD It's not something that depends on how you care about them, in this case, they just break. What you can care about it's their case, and it's really, really hard to keep it untouched. The material they used causes issues with keeping it in tight spaces, and it gets dirty after some time. In addition, the plastic they used is really soft, so hinges bends out easily and you can see some imprints inside :)
watching this video using my Sennheiser MTW3. For my use case which is at work in my office for phone calls and then listening to music, the MTW3 are great. If I had more ANC requirements I would give the XM5s a try. Excellent review
Great comparison! Wonderful detail. I have MTW 3's and I'm on my 3rd pair. They are FANTASTIC but the left bud dying issue is a HUGE deterrent on these. Sony nail the basics and win out in Quality Control so I'd suggest those over my Senn's any day.

Sennheiser at their price point are excellent. Unfortunately, they require a phone with a Qualcomm processor to maintain a stable connection. And they have significant lifetime issues. The problem stands after a wiping, bending and dirty casing and a very small microphone input that gets dirty and can't be cleaned, which causes unbearable whine and ANC problems after time. In my case, I also had difficulties with hissing at upper sounds, a problem that occurred in all three pairs.
I use them with an IPhone 13 Pro Max and I have never ever had connection issues. I experienced driver issues with my first pair, they exchanged them and they have been flawless since then.
I just cleaned the mesh that's underneath the foam tips and the cover for the headphone itself. After that, the beeping noise stopped. May be a momentary fix but it worked. Either way of you want to switch up I wouldnt say you lost anything.
Thank you for this, I was wondering which to get and I've had the over-ear WH-1000XM4 for two years now. There's many small things that have bothered me, some things which could be me just being picky, but also things that I shouldn't have to get irritated by when paying for a premium product and choosing "the best in test". It seems like the same things about the WF-baby brother (which also come at a hefty price tag). I know the Sennheiser sound, from way back when, and it seems I'll be going for those. I got the mtw3 and i love their sound. Also max volume is great. So far i was always disappointed by sonys sound mostly. Their features and anc alwys beat the competition tho.
A lot of people are complaining about failing MTW buds... My MTW and MTW2 still work great and I got both of them on launch day. Guess some pairs got lucky and a lot unlucky... I do buy them from Sennheiser's own website, maybe their way of packaging and everything could make a difference, I don't know...
As some one who has both buy the Sony buds. They actually work compared to the Sennheiser ones which are always finding some new way to not work. Never buying another wireless Sennheiser product again.
After testing both irl myself today, I would 100% go with the MTW3 for multiple reasons. Main ones: a. Better sound quality according to me and an audiofile in a hifi club I was at. Better grip, xm5's are VERY glossy and slippery.. Extremly hard to pick up from the case and hard to hold on to.. also a looser fit in the ear. Altough more comfortable but meh.. and them being more comfortable is subjective, but they aren't as secure in your ears), much better looking case, but bigger though :p (doens't bother me at all, I just love it's design) and the ANC difference is small, I would prefer to get "snugs" + MTW3 myself, and that's what I recommend to anyone who cares about perfect audio quality, comfort and secure fit :) and then the PRICE difference alone is enough to not pick the xm5's at least in my country they are 2x as expensive as the MTW3.. Overall sony wf-1000 xm5 in ear, NOT worth it at all. Sennheiser momentum true wireless 3, VERY worth it. (If you go with the MTW3 without the snugs, then it's worth it to pay a little bit extra to get foam eartips from "comply" according to the audiofile, they are supposedly a lot more comfortable than the standard ones. But I didn't get those myself before I'm getting snugs instead)
Sound quality perception is very subjective, but no wireless earbuds can ever beat the wired ones - technology is simply not there yet. As an amateur audiophile I may attest that no wireless earbuds save may be B&O beoplay EX can compare to wired Shure SE535 or Shure SE846 in ear monitors that I own. Having said that Sennheisers do sound very good, but fit and comfort for me personally make them unusable. Actually sennheiser mtw2 older model was perfect. Too bad the manufacturer decided to make an "improvement.,"😢
@@mithrandir4146 nice replay, and you're probably right there! :) I'm planning on getting form fitting custom fit esartips in medical grade silikone though though so fit and comfort and sound quality raises even further, and sound isolation especially with about 30 db more or less :) With that in mind, maybe the wireless ones gets closer to wired ones, and for me, I truly hate wires beyond anyone else, so I would sacrifice sound quality any day, if it meant I could avoid wires :p But yea, sound quality is subjective, but at least we can all agree that both MTW3 and B&O ex sound amazing :) I notice the base especially on the B&O, but I'm far from a base head, so.. I felt like the sennheisers were better for me, especially because they were also less than half the price.
It is an age old argument of wired vs. Wireless, quality vs. Convenience. You just have to choose what fits your style best. I have read your response several times and may conclude that with the looser feel of xm5s in your ears you may not be getting a proper fit and seal. Therefore, ANC, sound quality and phone
And phone quality may be greatly affected. I will agree that handling xm5 takes some getting used too. What I also want to point out that the ear anatomy and the music source will make or brake the earbuds of any kind. My ear anatomy will not accept Sennheisers and yours - Sonys, therefore sony is better for me and sennheisers - for you. Also with LDAC codec and the extensive hires FLAC files music library, Sonys are a clear choice for me. I have tested xm5s and mtw3s extensively and as a frequent computer may attest that xm5s with a stock eartps have a far better anc that is surpassed only by boseqc2. Better anc translates into clearer sound, wider Soundstage and better call quality. I truly wish sennheisers fit me better, were not as loud and did not hurt my ears. But it is not to be. Too bad, they sound very good. I am very happy that mtw3 works great for you! It is worth mentioning that one of the prominent reviewers pointed out that mt3s sit further outside the ear than mt2, and he used 3rd party foamtips that were the gamechanger! With the custom tips you will realize mtw3s full potential and will get your dream earbuds! P.s.: As far as the amazing sound is concerned b&o come very close. Yet I reserve that adjective only for Shures used by professional musicians and sound engineers. By the way, Shures are sold in wireless form as well as Shure aonic. Shure se215 wired is only $ 100 wired bought with the wireless unit of another $50 bucks and you get shure sound in the wireless form. Just the thought.
For me currently sony's are slightly better than MTW3 for sound and features but at least +100 $ .So There is not so much difference to justify the higher price of the Sony apart from a better ANC. I got MTW3 at 170€ and i'm satisfied for their sound and features.
When the hype is down and all the reviews are in, all that matters is if the earbuds fit in your lifestyle. After testing both extensively I chose SONYS. I really wanted to like Sennheisers and after returning them the 3rd time due to loud volume, ear discomfort and some connection issues, decided they were not for me. Worth mentioning that SONY customer service was so much better - they exchanged my xm4s with the battery issues AFTER 1 year warranty expired.

I can confirm you the bad qc of my mtw3, personally I solved it without the intervention of customer care and currently they are not giving me any problems but honestly I don't recommend them anymore because there are so many reports
Momentum TWs3 have no side tone so you can’t hear your own voice during calls. Also, the other side of a phone call has kind of an echo on Momentum TWS3. I like their sound, but these two disadvantages really disappointed me and unfortunately, they aren’t mentioned in any review I’ve found. Now I’ve bought the WF-1000XM5 and I’m really satisfied.
The lack of transparency mode during phone calls is probably the biggest issue I have with my MTW3’s. The ANC is also far behind my XM5’s and AirPod Pro 2’s. I hope Sennheiser add transparency during calls and get better ANC for their next product.
@@thewavefafa The XM5 sound is a bit in your face for me. Need to visit a store to try them out. (I'm listening to the samples on an HD600) Currently using the Soundpeats Opera 5 as a back up, they sounded great but the lack of multipoint is infuriating for a multi-device user like me.
I've owned all MTW generations and used them daily for at least a year each. Sadly regardless of how good they are as headphones the hardware durability is terrible and I've had each generation fail on me multiple times. Have returned MTW3 now and are looking for a replacement, potentially the xm5
Is it true about the durability of the “MTW3”? Cause I had many sennheiser earbuds too (cheaper models) and had the same problem, however I though, with the premium model, I would not have that problem

Personally I'm rooting for my earbuds to break, because then I get brand new ones with warranty being renewed, and I've got a scooter to quickly drive by the store to get the new ones :p
The MTW3s have terrible build quality. Since May 2022, I've brought it in for repairs 5 times and out of those 5 times they've changed a new pair for me at least twice. Each time I'm at the service centre for drop off or pick up, I meet other owners who have the same problem with a defective left ear bud.
Yes,sadly this is the case in Sweden. Many many users had problems with MTW3 build quality and software problems . But much better price then Sony .120 dollar cheaper
I have the XM5's. Very nicely done earbuds, with very effective ANC and transparancy modes. Sound quality is awesome EXCEPT for the VERY significant bass drop-off as you increase volume above ~%70. I have never tried the MTW3, but looking forward to the TW4. Sennheiser audio quality is known to be the BEST in this price realm without ANY bass drop-off as you increase volume. Can't wait to see the MTW4. Aaron discusses this at 8:02 in this video.
Thanks for the review. I thought the sound samples were interesting. Definitely heard tge difference in the vocals. Vocals seemed a bit muffled by the seinheissers.
No they dont. At least not in this test. What you think is cleaner sound is an artificial treble boost on the Sonys but the Sennheisers have way better timbre. Its not even close. What you hear as a veil is a dip on the high end. But the actual mid-range is quite noticeably better on the Sennheisers here
I have owned both. The Sony experience was more complete for me and I highly recommend them for their safe hearing and decibel counter. They sound crisper to me as well, but I did like the TW3s sound personalisation as they seemed to bring out more dynamic range.
On Sennheiser: Aside from the sound, these headphones have no pluses. First of all, it took me a few months to get them to work with my Pixel 7 phone: there was always the problem that the sound from music was going into the headphones, but I couldn't use them as a headset when connected. Then it was fixed with updates. But the problems started 4-5 months after purchase: Poor contact between the headphones and the ports in the case. Everything was charging fine up until now, but then you put the headphones on charging, the case lights up immediately yellow and then immediately green. You take the headphones out and you find out that the right earphone is not charged. It is necessary to clean all the contacts, and only then it will work. Clean with alcohol should be almost every 2-3 weeks of daily use. And even in this case it happened that after charging the right earpiece was discharged. After 10 months of use torn earbud, but it's nothing. The most shameful thing is that the cap/membrane of the left earpiece, which was held on the glue (!!!) on the diameter (!!!!!) came off. How for 220 euros (May 2023) can this be done? Noise reduction is practically non-existent. I have nothing to compare it with, of course. But in the subway the difference is minimal between noise reduction on and off. In short, if you don't want to be disappointed, avoid this model. Nothing against the brand. I've owned wired headphones from Sennheiser for about 15 years. No complaints. They sound great. And they still work, by the way.
Hi Aaron , own a M5 here . IMO i think that the main star of the show is the mids. which i think is the actual focus of this product. Musical notes on guitar , piano and vocals become way more appararent in this case. the bass and and highs are great , just not the main focus of the earbuds IMO.
The best mic for phone call is the samsung galaxy buds pro 2. I use it at a pretty loud work place and even when I just whisper, they would still hear me.
I've had them both. Sound quality is great but....the MTW3s only last 3 months before they break (returned first pair under warranty then the second pair also broke just after 3 months). The XM5s were an immediate fail because they fall out of my ears pretty damn quick! To have any kind of chance of them staying in, you have to insert them like you're inserting ear-plugs -_-
I've actually just purchased Sennheisers as replacement for my older SONY XM4 buds that got bad during last spring because of the known battery drain issue that so many people have been experiencing lately. I have to say they are in every possible way better than XM4 at least, except for the battery life (at least until SONY batteries suddenly gets bad because of fw update or whatever mess they did). I decided to never give a chance to new SONYs since I don't want to risk having to throw $300 buds in trashcan after only 1½ years of usage, just like I had to do with XM4.
I just bought the Sony WF1000XN5 the other day. Great sound, when you can keep them in your ears. They won't stop falling out. Even worse when you're eating. It is such a big problem I'm sending them back. Really disappointed!!!😢 According to the internet this is quite a problem for many people!!
one thing to add is price and value. From what I understand the Sennheisers are at least comparable in many of these categories, yet are a solid $120 to $130 cheaper than the Sonys right now Airpods Pro 2 are also a solid $100 cheaper Sony Linkbuds S are literally half the price I'm sure that as time goes ok we'll see the price drop a bit on these xm5s, but to me their price is very hard to justify right now
Of course the Sony headphones are " High res" certified. Sony is the company who certifies High res audio and designed and proposed which is recognized by CEA ( Consumer Electronic Audio).
It isn't real Hi-res because of bluetooth's limits (but this not mean that they sound bad). A Hi res file is at least 24bit/96khz and to stream it without any losses bluetooth should be capable to transfer up to 4608kbps, so the current ldac can't even get to the CD quality (that needs 1411kbps against ldac's 990 at high quality setting).
I don't know what you hear but the mic on the Sennheiser were superior, I'll prefer them over the SONY, not to mention they look and feel more premium.
Ilove my MTW3's for listening to awesome music at home, in the garden etc., and Airpods Pro 2 for everyday use, office, sports etc. Tiny case, great ANC and solid sound.

Your show is informative if someone is sitting on your couch, no way you can hear any earbuds off of RU-vid with any accuracy. Do like everyone else on RU-vid, use them and give your thoughts, stop with all the listening of that horrible music you play over and over and over. We all get that you think you're an audiophile. Sennheiser mtw3 is a competitor with Sony xm5 in terms of sound (with 1 caviat - mtw3s are very loud even at the lowest volume setting). There is no competition when it comes to fit and comfort, ANC and the phone call quality. SONY is better. Why Sennheiser had to make mtw3?! 😢 Mtw2 were much better even with mediocre ANC. With those wings Sennheiser mtw3 causes pain to my ears, just like Sony xm4. Xm5 is a clear choice for me.
As a Sennheiser TWS 3 and Airpods PRO 2 user, my prefer TWS 3. Don't buy Airpods if you need sound quality. Because High prequency slap your brain tıssszzzzzz and it's not good choose for Techno or EDM
sennheiser sounds more compressed on dt1770 pro headphones, like mp3. bass is also not very crisp. but seeing the price... maybe equalizer can fix things.

Loudness... for phone calls. and 360 degree listening etc. I sent it to the warranty service and the first time they sent me a new one and I sent the new one to the warranty and now I called and we do not have a device that will refund the money and the company asked us to inform us that the production of this model has stopped and said that we will refund the money... yea but that's only a problem for "bassheads", and loud music and bass specificly is actually what gives you hearing damage over time, so.. Maybe sony tries to protect their users from destroying their own ears?

@@levil4012 Well yea but the better the ANC and isolation the less of a need for turning up the sound even in public transportation. Also the better hearing you have the less of a need for it, the more you turn it up, because the ANC and isolation is not good enough, the more your hearing is gonna take damage, especially from more base. This is a choice between what you like and what you need. Sennheiser gives you the freedom to drestroy your hearing if you want to, where sony seems to be a bit more careful and responsible about it to protect your ears. Loving a loud bass and such isn't bad, and ofc life should be enjoyed to the fullest, but it's important to not do it for too long as a time though. Overall I get why you picked the sennheisers i'm currently trying to figure out myself which of them I wanna buy. And so far I have only tried the sennheisers and they are freaking amazing in sound quiality but the ANC seems really really bad to me, which also is why turning up the volume could be needed sadly... :/
@@levil4012 I tried the XM5's and the MTW3, and the MTW3 wins in sound quality, and the while the ANC might be slightly better on the sony's it's not really significant in my opinion. As well as the MTW3 must have had a much better fit for me, because the sound isolation is a lot better for me. The xm5's are glossy and hard to pick up, easy to drop. BIGGEST design flaw i've seen in a long time. The xm5's are more comfortable in the ears, but also feels like they will fall out easier.. I presented them to an audiofile, and he was not impressed by the xm5's either. Overall I suggest people go for the MTW3 until better comes out, if nothing else, then for half the freaking price of the xm5's.. what a scam for that price.
I bought the Sony Xm5 based on RU-vid influencer reviews saying the noise cancelling is best. What a terrible mistake i made. The noise cancelling is terrible. Definitely not worth the money. Also, the higher quality LDAC codec doesn't work. Worst sony product ive ever bought
If only the MTW3 had reliability, I am on my third pair in 2 years. And that pair is now also dying but I am outwith my warranty. 1st Pair - Left but diaphragm died. 2nd Pair - Left bud refused to charge and died. Current (3rd pair) - Audio quality changes from sounding like a pair of 99p earphones to the full sound of the MTW3. Dropping connection, Goin silent and not dropping the conneciton. Buds will go out of sync with each other. The MTW3 wind cancelling is brilliant. Along with the sound quality (when they are working as they shoud) is amazing. Just that reliability kills them and makes them a do not buy.
I have the SONY WFXB700 and it really boils down to Sony, Shenhisers, and BOSE. Anything below that you are buying trash. So get ready to pay at least $100 dollars for refurbished ones.
I have the xm4’s (really have enjoyed, I even like how they fit). What’s your thoughts on upgrading to the 5’s? Also, was looking into over the ear headphones. Any thoughts on upgrading to something like px7 S2?
IMHO If you already have a pair that works great for you don't upgrade. Xm5 do sound better with a bigger driver that translates into better sound quity and phone calls, slightly better ANC. Just keep in mind that xm5 is brand new and while xm4 are not, with xm4s most of the kinks were worked out. Xm5 may develop some unforseen issues down the line.. My advice is wait and see and test them out. If you must get them wait for Christmas sale.
If I take the price in context, i don‘t see why to pay nearly double price (currently Sony 320€ vs. MTW3 170€) for those slight benefits. But thanks for the comparison.
For me MTW3 sure. Also for sony's price I should buy technics az80 or status between 3 anc (that cost 70$ less than sony's and have a lot better sound quality), or nuratrue pro.
I am still looking for a suitable replacement for the MTW3 as mine died (both sides) a few months after I bought it and after returnd from warranty, the left side died again after a few months. I sent it back for warranty claim again and the shop that I bought it from loaned me theirs, but I discovered that their unit's right side also died. I guess I have really bad luck wiht Sennheiser.

I have to soundcore Liberty 4. People often compare the Airpods pro 2 to the new Sony's and say the sound quality isnt that different. I did try out the Airpods and felt my Soundcores sounded better, should i switch to the sonys?
yessss, I have been looking for this got damn comparison for days. I love the MTW3 but I'm on my second pair, the volume has shrunk and there is a clicking sound that come out of both buds. I've debating about getting a replacement or just upgrading. Dead ass, thank you for this ebro
@@RagingBad there's a clicking sound in both my ear buds and the volume doesn't reach to a maximum level anymore. I'm going to try the Sony's because I'm not in the mood to try to test a 3rd set. They're great when they work but they fuck up too much for my taste.
@@navikung9018 I reset the earbuds several times and it didn't fix it. Maybe I excessively sweat into them or something. Maybe it's an update issue or the hardware itself. Luckily I got the total member warranty for best buy so I'm about to cop the Sony's.
i've just unpacked mine XM5.... first question (i had the same problem with XM4) How to enable AMBIENT SOUND and stop the music WITH THE SAME ONE TOUCH ?? sounds so obvious ... (and it works like this with Sennheisers) (i don't want to keep holding one earbud for a minute if i want to talk more - quick attention mode) and pressing one earbud to stop music and second to switch to ambient mode .....sounds sooo dumb ....?
I truly think newness matter more to opinions than facts. We all tend to act like the newest thing is the best even when it isn’t. And the Sonys ANC isn’t what they claim. I have tried every single tips and every way to put them in and they never beat the Bose in ANC. They barely beat Soundcore lIberty 4’s strong setting in anc. But Sony does have the most gimmicks features hands down. It’s just that they aren’t very useful.
For sound quality, listening on linkbuds S, so there’s that, but I prefer Sony over the momentum. Had the first Momentum and never really enjoyed the sound quality.
I bought the Momentum 3's this month and had to return them after two weeks because the left earbud wouldnt charge above 10%. Not sure if I'll replace them or try something else...
How about comparison between Sony WF-1000XM5 vs. Audio Technica ATH-TWX9? I value sound quality > fit for gym > longevity / durability of product from the brand. The fact that you mentioned the XM5 gonna be oily from sweat is kind of a big deal. But on the other hand, I read comments saying the TWX9 earbuds will pick up dust due to its material. Or do you have any earbuds in similar price range on your mind that you would recommend?
if the sennys dont break at the current price they are amazing. i've only got them recently and honestly, so much better than the bose quietcomfort 2 (the bose have great ANC tho, but the sound quality is like raycon tier, utter garbage)
Hi Aaron, quick question: how do I put my new pair of Sony WF-1000XM5 in pairing mode? I used to hold both sensors for around 5 seconds on my WF-1000XM4, but this does not work on my XM5s. Any idea? Cheers!
Paring works differently on xm5. There is a paring button on the back of the case. Push it down for a few seconds until you see a blue light and paring process will be comeyed.
