@@MikeOBrienMedia What do you think about jabra 85h elite? I head there were one of the best if not the best high end wireless headphones for working out
Pros: - decent transparence mode - can connect to 2 devices - comfortable but gets warm if wear for longer time - good grip + secure on head - easy to clean - decent microphone (block out background noise) - amazing sound stage - can connect to wire - controls are all on the right ear bud - good noise cancellation - aesthetic Cons: - app is a bit outdated - not too good for heat - not too good for workout cuz of the sweat, might damage it - same for rain / water - the case is large + not foldable
@@joshentertainment2 I just bought these and returned them because of a number of reasons but inside the box there is a paper that says no rain, no sweat, no liquid... They are not water resistant and have no rating. And honestly in my opinion, they aren't worth the 400 dollars. They don't fit smaller ears and heads like mine, the vegan leather is good but not enough cushion in the ear pads. The design is not good if you wear glasses because it leaks noise because of the fit. The noise cancelling is good but the AI gets confused at times and won't turn the noise cancelling back on even after a few seconds of picking up sound or moving. The headband is too small for my tiny head. The drivers are smaller than the 3s and 4s. I believe 33 mm drivers vs 44 mm in previous models. They sound almost exactly like the BOSE 700 with just a ted bit more control over the bass. The sound is good but more crispy than the 3s and 4s. I prefer my 3s over the 4s and 5s.
few months on still loving these. Work, exersising, traveling all great. Holding up great and continue to be even on my big ear big head super comfortable for long listenig.
I've had these for 7 months now. I bought these, and the best Bose and Beats to test them at home for which one was the best sound and noise cancelling. My son and I did a blind test on both of us. We both chose these for both sound quality and noise cancelling, wasn't even close. I used them for a 20 hour flight to Thailand and they were a life saver. Super comfortable. Battery lasted the entire trip. Had a crying baby three seats away, couldn't hear the baby at all when playing music at a normal level. Putting my hand over the right ear allowed me to communicate with the flight attendant. The ONLY negative I have experienced, and it may just be not knowing how to use them correctly, is that when I have them setup to turn off noise cancelling when I put my hand over the right ear they will also turn off noise cancelling when I yawn. That's annoying because I then have to turn the noise cancelling back on. Again, that might be me not knowing how to set them up correctly. I need to do some reading on that. Overall, they have awesome sound and great noise cancelling, and last a long time. Highly recommend.
Been using the XM5s for about a week now. They have been great overall, but I find that in some instances the automatic ANC feature struggles to give enough noise-cancelling for my environment. I prefer the manual optimising feature of the previous models. Just my opinion.
a lot of people commenting on these not being able to fold down to reduce travel size, I'm glad they don't fold! I've always hated hinges in my head phones their usually the first thing to go reducing longevity!!!
I tried the XM5 but as soon as the 1 hour mark passes, the clamping force and the shallower earpads really start fatiguing my ears. They sound and look great, but honestly I expected a lot more in terms of comfort because I don't just use headphones for an hour at time. Decided to return them and go for the Bose QC45. They don't sound quite as dynamic but are heaps more comfortable and have comparable ANC. At least, that's my experience with this product.
it was delayed in my country so I got the chance to read problems from reddit from actual users. It was interesting because despite reviewers saying it's very comfortable, there are people on reddit who said it was uncomfortable and the thin headband was digging on their head.
@@asterfield02 I wondered about that. I have the xm4 and they are very comfortable, but when I saw the xm5's, I was a little disappointed. It looks like they are trying look more like Apple, which I don't really like the look of. Aside from the look, a wider band distributes the weight more evenly decreasing discomfort. Sony should just do their own thing and not try to be like apple. I've had xm2, 3 and 4 and loved all of them and saw improvements with each new version, but I will probably skip the xm5's
Do you use any apps or does it come with like different sound eq ?? What’s your fave? I can’t be bothered using an eq and manually adjusting treble bass etc as I’m not a musician. Wish these folder tbh lol Do they cancel noise good
@@Ohkeh640 they cancel noise the best. Industry leading. The sound quality is great. Very comfortable. Stylish. And the touch controls are superb. The only weakness here is the ambient sound. It’s not as good as the AirPods Max. But Sony makes the best headphones 🎧
Just watched this 11 month old video having just bought a pair of XM5s two weeks ago. I have to say I love them. After only having them for two weeks I think your review is pretty spot on. There will always be things that can be improved like the USB’s listening issue but for now I’m totally happy with them.
I have tried Sennheiser, Bose, Apple, Parrot and Jabra. THESE are the best Headphones money can buy! Noise Cancelling is on a different level. Transparency mode is very good! Comfort is unbelievable good - I can put them on for 8+ hours. And call quality is even better than some dedicated conference headsets. And the headphones support 18W charging which no one is mentioning and is a killer feature.
How is the noice cancelling working so far on cutting out human voices on crowded place?? Does it cut out human voices?? I heard it doesn't have manual ANC intensity control? Have you used any other ANC headphones before so you can compare these two???
@@ramprasath1552 the ANC works fine One thing to mention is when there isn't anything playing through the headphones some close by voices can be heard but if you play anything everything is so good without any external noises, hope this helps
had them for about 2 months now. only really got them for the gym and traveling. audio quality and noise cancellation is amazing. just only wished they folded and were more compact for travel
@@tonyramirez1112could you provide an update if they are still good for the gym? Considering either these or the Beats Studio Pro’s. By the sounds of it, XM5 are the better headphones but I’m in the Apple ecosystem so beats are useful and also I would feel much more comfortable wearing them in the gym to the XM5’s where I’ve seen multiple people say they do not stand up well in gym use.
@@tonyramirez1112 have they survived still? I live in a mediterrenean country so from spring all the way to autumn the temps are relatively high nowadays so you're guaranteed to sweat at the gym, but anc is very important to me which is why i want these specifically 😅
@@aboveaura4817 they survived and are still working with no problems. I ended up doing a body building show so they survived all that cardio and sweat. You can probably find a deal on them now
these headphones are terrific for the ederly who are losing their hearing but want to watch television programming or the baseball game without the rumble and rattle of others in any shared space. As you age surrounding noise is a huge barrier to hearing. Great review.
I have gone through 2 pairs of Sony headphones xm3 and xm4. Both broke at the hinge point. The xm5 suffer from same issue. It’s a known problem. Ear pads breakdown with frequent use. Sony wont replace under warranty. The cost to fix hinge and add new pads bring the cost over the cost of AirPod Max. Sometimes buying higher quality at higher cost is the cheaper option in the long run.
I really appreciate your reviews. I’m having a terrible time with the Bose NC 700 headphones. I’ve already had 3 different pairs sent to me by Bose under warranty. I’m using as my main smartphone the iPhone 13 Pro. I have 3 pairs of Bose QC 35 II and all of them work PERFECTLY on phone calls - everyone hears me GREAT - if I leave myself a VM my voice is loud and clear. The Bose NC 700 sound like my voice is muffled and distorted - as if there is something covering the mic’s and blocking my voice. I’ve reset them multiple times - NOTHING helps. I have even tried them on several different smartphones. The iPhone 6, iPhone SE 2nd generation and the iPhone 13 Pro - of course the iPhone 6 is running an older iOS version of 12.X. My iPhone SE 2nd generation and 13 Pro have been tried with both iOS 15 all revs and now iOS 16. The NC 700 is muffled and distorted on ALL of the iPhones. I even tried them on my BlackBerry KEY 2 and DTEK 60 - the exact same problem with both BlackBerry Android smartphones and the iPhones. I’ve NEVER had any trouble with Bluetooth headphones before with any brand let alone Bose. They sound GREAT with music but my voice is all muffled and distorted as if the mic’s are being blocked by something. As I stated, all 3 pairs of my Bose QC 35 II work perfectly for voice calls. I also use AirPod PROS, Bose QC earbuds, Beats Fitpro buds - they all work GREAT for my voice on phone calls and voice recordings as well. The only thing that makes any sense to me, is that the Bose NC 700 want to pair with the LE (low energy) setting in the Bose audio app. Even if I pair them on the iPhone or Android smartphones directly in the Bluetooth setting without the Bose music app - I get the same terrible voice call results. I would really appreciate any input and advice you may have for me. Warm regards, Joel Toronto, ON Canada
Hahaha totally agreed on the Bose NC 700. I have one and it’s terrible for me given its high price. It feels heavy and hurts my head after not that long time of wearing. And the noise canceling is terrible as well, I have tried resetting and anything that might help in the community page. Nothing works.
Watching again in stir up interest in hopes of holiday deals coming up. I really wish Purple made ear cups with the grid like their mattresses to help with sealing over uneven surfaces like glasses and hats, and simultaneously providing heat dissipation.
One thing I'm not seeing being mentioned anywhere is the insane amount of audio delay. It is VERY significant when on bluetooth. If you use these for gaming, buy a decent length aux cord because it is bad. Not sony's fault really, just bluetooth slowness.
@@Ketsy16 That's true, I'm only saying don't buy it as a wireless gaming headset like I did. It still works great and audio quality is amazing, but the delay can be bad and its just something I wasn't expecting.
@@bretthuston4727 well what were you expecting of course there is delay with bluethooth if you want a better experience get wirless gaming headphones like from razer with a usb dongle for connection then you will have a very low delay but cable is still better if you want to get every piece of delay out of the way :)
Thanks for the great review... I've been waiting for this. I will be getting this next week and I really hope that there would be great improvements from someone using the XM4 earbuds.
@@MikeOBrienMedia Thanks again... I've seen your reviews on the XM4 earbuds as well. In fact your video was the one that convinced me to get it haha now your XM5 video will make me buy the headphone 😂
I have xm4 earbuds and I got xm5 headphones in a Sony store after I tried them and I was blown away by its sound compare to both xm4 earbuds and headphones. You won't regret :)
As a video creator, I prefer to use the wired connection (to avoid the Bluetooth latency). What’s the sound quality, ANC performance and latency in wired mode? Thanks! Great vid!
@@t.w.1672 No no, it's huge, around 150 ms. You just don't notice when watching content because the device delays the video with the same amount. But video editing is interactive, then that doesn't work.
loved mostly everything about the XM5. But the headband is way too narrow and not cushioned enough. I had to return them since they became too uncomfortable to wear after 30-45 min.
It seems like they're trying to be like Apple, sound quality aside, I don't like the design. They had a great design with the xm4' which I love, but it seems like they sacrificed practicality to be trendy, ugh!
The previous version XM4 earphones passed every sweat test while I was using them for a year. Just switched to XM5 headphones and stupidly went for a run what turned out to be a very hot day... Well... They didn't slip but they got soo sweaty inside. I got a bit scared but they still work so I guess if you don't sweat buckets from ears you should be good 😅
Great review, Thanks! Some are quick to say what’s sauce for the goose but when the ear is on the other foot, sometimes the secret sauce can be lost. Not this time though; It is all super good.
I kind of need that type c playback when gaming and listening to music because who knows when the battery will permanently die. Great video, and I needed that information 👍.
Great video. Thanks for that. My key priority is taking phone calls and zoom calls in coffee shops and cafes, with lots of background noise and chatter. Is the Sony WH-1000XM5 good so that the person or people that i am talking to do not get distracted by the background noise and chatter? Do you also review earbuds - which earbuds would you recommend for phone calls and zoom calls?
I tried them in the store along with 700s and I found the fit better with the 700. I guess it all depends on the size of the head. If you have a smaller head, I think 700 is better.
Have had it for over 6 months and I am on my 2nd one due to the first one breaking (hinge). Pros: -Great sound quality (bass is good) -Good microphone -Great speaker -Can control most aspects with touch feature -Can use app to tweak sound to your liking -Great battery life Cons: -It's all plastic and plastic breaks and this is a big con Once my warranty is up, I will go with the airpods max due to it being stronger as apple uses metal and steel
The first thing I noticed when I put mine on were just how light they were it’s crazy compared to my old Beats Studio 3s wireless I could wear the xm5s forever
@@Big-cc3nn is Sony connect just the app? Or is that a setting in the eq Ps. Nice pic NLE 😂 it’s my bday tomorrow can’t decide if I want these as a present. Tbh I read reviews that said they’re a fingerprint magnet don’t sound good when watching movies or RU-vid
I agree with most of what you have said. The only two things I disagree with are the ANC and the sound signature. I don't think the ANC is that great on these or even the Bose. I really don't understand what everyone is raving on about. Imo, out of the bunch Bose QC45 blocks out the ambience sounds though still not great. When your playing music and blasting audio into you head you can't hear anything anyway. I guess it depends on at what point do you measure the noice cancellation? For me it's when there is no music playing is the true measure on how well these do with noise. Anyway rant over ANC for now lol. The sounds quality is good but not as great as you've mentioned here, this is a subjective point though. The base is great as always, it's Sony's selling point but it somehow distorts the vocals. Even when you try messing about with the EQ the treble feels like you're on an airplane and you get that airy hissing noise. The clarity isn't spot on like the Bose. If the Bose managed to allow the EQ to be base punchy as the Sony that would the ideal selling headphone imo. Also one positive thing to point out the is no sounds leakage with the new Sony Mx5's which is plus point. Keep up the good reviews - I just found your channel recently.
I just purchased the Sony WH-1000XM4 Black Friday at Best Buy on sale for $228.99 and the original price is $349.99. I saved $121.00. I love the Sony WH-1000XM4 watching my 2022 Samsung OLED S95B 4K Smart Television. The Sony WH-1000XM5 is currently on sale at Best Buy for $50.00 at $349.99. The original price for the Sony WH-1000XM5 is $399.99. I prefer the Sony WH-1000XM4 because they're basically the same at the Sony WH-1000XM5 in my opinion. They both are expensive Sony Headphones and I think no one would disagree getting the Sony WH-1000XM4 for the Black Friday sale is a good choice.
I think Sony's software could be more polished for using the headphones with multiple devices, like a phone and a tablet. Data is not synchronized seamlessly between devices and often the Headphones Connect app crashes when changing devices.
Its great for short train rides and for work in office, but I wish it was easier to carry around. Have to strap it to a handle of my bag, since its uncomfortable around my neck.
I was checking reviews before i bought these, this was the final convincing one. I am switching from the WF 1000xm4 which have been a bit of a bother. Can't easily find proper eartips ( my left ear is the problem, no size stays in). Plus, majorly, the batteries gave up ,didn't hold any charge beyond 1 hour. A change of Varta batteries was expensive. The sound is great for me, hence the return to the same brand.
I used to have that on my XM4, but cleaning that helped (def a pain to clean on the XM5 I imagine). ALso are you pausing them manually before turning them off? I found that pausing before taking them off will not resume when you put them back on.
Great video as usual! My advice to anyone considering these would be to figure out what's important to you. I personally don't care about transparency at all. If I wanted to hear someone talking to me more clearly, I'd simply take the headphones off for a few seconds. Plus, part of the reason I'll have the headphones on is so people know not to talk to me. Lol
I'll buy these when someone comes out with breathable mesh ear cups. I have had them on my xm4 and they make a world of difference! I was told the xm4 and xm5 earcups aren't interchangeable. If you can confirm that I would truly appreciate it!!!
I have the XM4s but I've just bought a pair ofTechnics EAH-800 and so far I'd say that they are much more comfortable, sound better (with tighter bass, great midrange and treble), have a better app and have 50 hours of battery life. I was going to go for the XM5s but took a risk and it's paid off in my opinion.
Mkbhd or Mrwhostheboss can be top tech youtubers. But Mike you will just take the oscar when it comes to headphone reviews. Any headphone buy I will always look at your videos. Amazing work
I’ve been enjoying my XM5s since they were first released. But why does nobody mention that they’re GIGANTIC fingerprint magnets? This is one way in which they’re far inferior to their predecessor, which had a wonderful anti-smudge surface that felt much more upscale than the XM5’s smooth plastic. I also count the eco-friendly box as a negative, since it probably won’t survive until I’m ready to sell these and upgrade to the XM6. That makes not just the box, but the whole pair of headphones more likely to end up in the garbage since they sell more easily with the box. At least where I live.
I watched a different review and they mentioned that the telescopic headband has become looser, so it doesn't keep the size firmly, did you notice the same thing with yours?
good advice! Based on many years of experience, blowing your nose is very important, at least every half hour, to hear the best quality! Seriously, try it and you'll agree!
I bought a pair about a week ago and gave them a go. But between the strong plastic smell (which according to people online doesn't fade), and the discomfort on both my ears and the top of my head, I'm going to return them. Everything else was great, so these two points were very disappointing. I'm thinking I might go for the Bose QC Ultra as my current decade-old pair of wired Bose QC25 have been flawless apart from the occasional ear cup replacement, lack of Bluetooth, and annoyance of swapping out AAA batteries.
I bought them the day they released... I really like them except I just hate that Sony doesn't make anything compatible. Tried connecting these to my PlayStation and that was a total fail.
I think the reason for no usb listening and rather the 3.5mm is that Sony always offers a true analog option.... Hence the aux jack on their Xperia phones
Imo the QC 45 ANC is Superior and the headphone is more comfortable, the only down said to them in my experience is the call quality for the other person, my friend has the same pair and it's not great, the QC 35ii were better in that department. I bought the XM5 to see what the hype was about, I can say call quality is better BUT I cannot stand the AI ANC I just want the thing on full blast at all times none of this up and down crap it's annoying. The ANC on the bose is about 5% ahead of the XM5 imo.
My xm1s are cracked but love their balanced sound. Just yesterday on the plane I am hearing details in songs I've never heard before. Bass very well judged, I understand the successors went too bass heavy. At duty free found the 5s and in the black they are such finger print/grease magnets?! Actually thought the finish cheap. I was surprised the departure from the prev gen. Maybe I'll repair my OGs again:(
You could try the newly released Audio Technica M50x-BT2 which is far cheaper..better treble accuracy, better mid accuracy, more soundstage at just 200 dollars And if you are into V Shaped sound, Go for Sennheiser Momentum 4
It would be very nice if they had support for audio over usb, not only for the battery but what I thought of before and still do, for lag free playback and the anc is the icing on the cake
just got a pair, good price refurb, seconds 300 bucks from sony ebay, will be the best headphones I have every owned, only had ear buds and gaming hedphones. Hope they good :P
In Germany the cost difference between these and the AirPods Max is only 30 Euros. Which one would you suggest? For me Sound Quality is the most important factor followed by Comfort, Build Quality and ANC respectively. Once again great video as usual!
If your choice is between either Sony's or Apple's offering, and you don't already have an iPhone and MacBook, then the choice is already made up for you.
Do you have an iphone? If not then you forget about Airpods Max otherwise Airpods have a bit better sound quality (not that many times you can tell the difference) but the Sonys are more comfortable and lighter. Airpods use aluminum parts so they look more expensive maybe and Sony is all plastic but both are durable and ANC is great in both but Sony’s is a bit better.
There is a problem with having a phone conversation in a "quiet" environment and a colleague is sitting 3 meters next to you and talking. Then the colleague's voice will be very clearly heard by the person you are talking to on the phone. Here, the Bose 700 is still the king !!!
Hello you are doing really great. Just had one question- Is sony wh1000-xm5 comfortable with spectacles/eye-glasses?? Does it hurt our ears ?? Thank you
I enjoy sony headphones, since my taste of music is into solid base. The X5 looks solid, classy, expensive looking and sturdy than the earlier versions. Sound quality wise, in my opinion, X5 is superior. But two thing I’d say, the older version has better ANC and clamp effect. Whenever I use the older sony model, as I turn the ANC, there’s sudden silence. But unlike, with My new X5, I can still here Netflix conversation. Which is absent with older versions. It’s so subtle, but I think older version has better ANC. But the 360 effect of the X5, is so great. I suppose I need to adjust the sound via free 360 analyses, which I haven’t done yet.
I'm sure the xm4 case is just as flat, but also more compact because it folds inward. This new design appears to be Sony trying to be trendy like Apple and taking an unesscesary step backwards in design.
LOL watching this AFTER I purchased a pair for my wife 😥 (after watch edit) so I've always been a huge fan of Sony products and after watching this review I feel confident in my purchase! Thanks for this review Mike :D
I’ve been using these since the day they came out and honestly.. save your money people. Even with replacements the headphones randomly turn off and the touch function doesn’t work when you switch between devices. I have to turn them off then on for the touch function to work again.
