Thanks for the comments everyone! Seems like the unboxing vids are keepers. What do you think? Also, Be sure to watch to the end for the RU-vid exclusive portion. I need that intern!!!
Yes, the unboxing is great, and it gives us a preview of what the tv can do, a little something while we wait for the review. Don't change the process!
@@mattobambino I get it! Only problem with that is that it takes time to evaluate a TV. Then the review has to be shot, edited, etc. Hard to put them out at the same time.
I’ve had the 50 inch version of this TV since late December and I must say that it is WOW! It was an upgrade from my previous Sony 4K TV. The picture is awesome, especially with the lights off. It may not have the OLED screen of the A80J and A90J but it does share the rest of the guts of those sets. With that, it’s awesome and a great alternative to the the Sony OLEDs especially when price is a factor.
Hello there, I have been thinking about getting the 50 inch version, How is the viewing angles ? do you feel that there is color wash or gamma shift whenever you tilt your head ? Also , since you had it for long period , any issues whatsoever? thanks.
I think you made a good call (hope I did, too!), as now, in 2023, it looks like Sony is moving away from OLED in favor of mini-LED (which is just more, smaller LEDs). I think maybe they just got tired of the burn-in problems with OLED.
@@saeedalshaikh3799 I haven’t had any problems with the set. The colors are outstanding. It’s a blast when watching 4K HDR content with the lights off.
Hello, do you know if you can turn the tv on and off using the remote control but without pointing the control at the sony x90j tv?? Because I read somewhere that the power button is the only one that is infrared and you need to point it at the tv to turn it on and off
@@desmundlighten3603 i was rocking with Quantum until he went on his anti-vax rant the other day. I cant rock with someone who uses their influence to push others astray. But…his POV on TVs was refreshing. Now i gotta find a backup in case Caleb goes on vacation for a week or two.
@@Caleb_Denison no problem at all. I like your breakdowns. Literally watch your comparisons before i make a purchase. And you’re the reason why im buying a BDI Corridor (media console)
I bought a X900H last year and I recently got a LG CX and moved the 900 to my bedroom, I have to say, while the OLED is better, Sony's picture processing is so, so much better it is unbelievable how far ahead they have been in that regard for a long while.
Sony's TV engineers live in a world of their own. I just had Best Buy mount my Samsung TV and the person showed me Samsung's out-of-the-box motion. He had to disable it as we couldn't see the football in a youtube video. Half the time, I was asking him "where's the football?" as he was pausing it. He went "exactly!" This is for a Samsung Frame 2020. Now, I have to fix Samsung's color since I just compared it to my Sony and it's just a tad unnatural even in natural settings watching the LG 4k HDR demos that I know like the back of my hand by now. Argh! Why couldn't Sony make the Frame? :-)
@@techsamurai11 Samsung cheap sets are good but their high dollar TVs just feel like they are trying too hard. I had to deny 3 Samsung TVs for dead pixels out of the box and I mean dozens of them right in the middle of the screen, one had a line across the top. The movement on Samsung is horrible! I play a lot of video pinball and it was unplayable on the Samsung and this was their top model at the time. Go to Sony, no need to adjust the settings, game mode is unnecessary, no stuttering/jittering in the video everything looks natural. Winner…Sony.
@@techsamurai11 ya the frame was actually pretty low budget LOL must specs was 5-6/10 LOL but ya i don’t get it, our 2012 amazing 4K curve was motionless even mostly without anything turned on, with new ones seems with settings on high still more blurry then old tv without turned on makes no sense
I enjoy the unboxing videos and the honest perspective including the issues. Keep the content coming. As for suggested content, give your impressions the difference between a step down 75" TV vs a step up 65" if you can find two that are near the same price point. 10" of screen diagonal vs better black level performance or processing. I know it will be subjective to the owner and space but at the same time larger screen area provides immersion that better quality may not be able to overcome.
@@Cristianomare yeah, no matter how good a picture is, the immersion of a larger screen has no substitute. It just sucks because once you go bigger there is no going down in size.
I can’t speak about other competing TVs, but I’ll say this. One thing Caleb mentions that the Sony is lacking in comparison is brightness. That seems to be a big point. However, I recently purchased this TV two weeks ago and it’s just too bright! I had to actually lower the brightness of this TV. In its standard setting, it was incredibly bright. To the point that looking at my son on the sofa opposite the tv felt like he was set up in a photo studio with lighting equipment. He is indeed correct that the colors are very accurate out of the box and it is incredible easy to set. The Sony will recognize each unit connected to the HDMI ports and recommend which port is the best setting. For example, a Roku Ultra that is Dolby Vision compatible, it recognized the native resolution and had my switch the HDMI to another for maximum quality. The Sony is a very good TV. And a very bright one at that.
I completely agree! On Custom I put the brightness down to 25. On Dolby Vision Bright and regular HDR they have it set at MAX which was killing my eyes lol. I currently put those to 30 and 35, respectively.
@@Alif1089 I haven't noticed any major issues with subtitled content. It seems to be more of an issue if Auto Local Dimming (under Brightness settings) is set to High. I have mine set to Medium.
Hello, do you know if you can turn the tv on and off using the remote control but without pointing the control at the sony x90j tv?? Because I read somewhere that the power button is the only one that is infrared and you need to point it at the tv to turn it on and off
As a kid in the 80s, I had a teenie tiny black and white TV connected to an NES. I played almost that whole generation without color. When I did finally get a color TV, it had to "Warm up" before the picture would show and it would turn off at random. Today, I bought the X90J. Come a long way.
Thanks for revisiting this TV. Looking forward to the X95J review. I’m 👀 for an 85” TV, and that one is on the list. Meanwhile, I watch the unboxing reviews, but I don’t feel like they’re essential viewing. More like a teaser.
I have an X90J. I like it. It was the best TV-as-a-monitor that I could find. Would be better if it were available in 43 inch size, but 50 inches works fine for text as long I set it to "Graphics" mode. As a TV, it's the best I've ever owned; HDR is terrific. Sound? Just like all TV's, it's crap, naturally. Use headphones or a real sound system.
@@HasNiHassaan I did. In fact, I bought a 43 inch x85J first. Then returned it because the HDR was horrible. In my experience, full-array local dimming is a REQUIREMENT for decent HDR. That said, the 43 inch x85J was an excellent monitor if you do not care about HDR.
I love the unboxing videos ahead of the full reviews. Seeing how you go about setting each TV up and walking us through what settings we should be using is always informative and entertaining.
Please keep the unboxing videos coming! I was disappointed when the unboxing of the Sony X90J was damaged, but I’m a fan of the videos done in real time. FYI, just got my x90J 75” last week.
this is the exact set im looking at getting for my new home, and moving the 65" Samsung into my boys room. can you tell me how youve liked/disliked your X90J please? im kind of torn between this and spending a ton more money for OLED
I have the 900h 65" and have been very pleased. Super simple to set up and only needing minor tweaks. I'm looking to upgrade the bedroom TV, so I'm thinking maybe 50" x90j. I'm just starting my research now, but I always check out your reviews first. This is probably mine kind of TV, I just like how sonys look and I'm not really into doing a bunch of tweaks. Keep up the good work!
Fair review on the Sony but I can't believe I heard you mention the Hisense U series as a competitor. Why? I ordered a U7 55" for my mom as her Toshiba 40" (actually built by Toshiba in Oct 2008) finally started having issues when you first went to turn it on. That and her being older, she had played it at a volume that ruined the speakers. So, I went on Amazon's website and got the Hisense at what I thought was a good price ($599). TV came, easy to unbox & set up and the interface was decent. Then you get to the flaw: as long as you are using the apps, the audio was fine. Also fine when you switched over the watch cable TV. But as soon as you changed the channel, the actors mouths moved & the audio trailed 1-3 second behind. No adjustment on the cable box, TV or change of HDMI cables would help. Even tried the built in "lips sync" adjustment on the TV but no. The only fix was to power off & then on the cable box EVERY TIME YOU CHANGE THE CHANNEL! Contacted them and got the latest firmware ( also supposed to fix the sound bar dropping audio problem) so new it just hit their servers this past Friday for OTA rollout starting this week). Did the upgrade and it was actually worse. So I packed it up, contacted Amazon to send it back & went to Best Buy the next morning and got the X90J. It works great, looks great and the audio has no problems (to me anyhow). Sure this isn't a $2-4K TV, but for the price, I think it's terrific. Sure better than that Hisense, who also now do Toshiba and Sharp TVs too. Just my experience. Yours may be different.
I am really enjoying these unboxing videos on the channel. Why? Honestly it’s the building up the anticipation of a full review, an extra dose of quality content and the general information and background about the unit. Keep up the great work!
I picked up this 4K TV during Prime Day. I love it! It’s great for watching movies. I also have a soundbar, so the audio issues aren’t a bid deal to me.
Hello Dear friend Which TV is better in terms of image quality and technology for ps5, please help me, I'm really confused. Sony x90j or s q70b Or do you have a better offer in this price range
Thanks much for the review! I'm probably a Sony snob, and after picking up a PS5 I realized that I probably needed to upgrade the TV as well. Presently I have a Sony Bravia KDL-52V4100 that I purchased new almost 14 years ago and it remains a solid TV. With everything electronic it's impossible to stay up to date on everything unless you are swimming in cash or don't mind the debt ceiling. I kicked it around and after looking at several other brands/sets I narrowed it down to this or the A80J. Opted for the X90J. The OLED certainly was a better TV, but with the amount of $$$ between the two and being a little leary of "burn in" I decided the X90J was the wiser choice. The real bummer in this is that I now have a great 14 year old Sony Bravia and nowhere to really put it. haha. Your reviews are straight forward and I believe unbiased. Thanks again.
Glad you did 2nd take. I agree with reasoning behind releasing the initial videos. Let us in on the story. Especially if there was no guarantee you'd get another TV to replace the damaged one.
I have an X900E that still kicks ass for it's limited bedroom use. I'd love to upgrade just to upgrade but idk... Sony might have made these older TVs a little too good for their sake.
A lot of people say that - in fact, you might be downgrading or just swapping like-for-like if you don't go with a Sony and even then it might be marginal. I have a 2014 Sony flagship IPS (if you can believe it, an IPS) and I'm having trouble going to anything but a Sony A80J. My Samsung Frame 2020 4k HDR in my bedroom wakes up everyday wishing it was my Sony :-)
Be careful mine just died and I bought the X900e right when it came out in 2017. It lasted 4 years almost 5 until yesterday I had the 8 blinking red lights and it won't go off. I did my research, its done, you just can not trust 2016-19 Android OS Sony TVs. The processor was too new to handle it. And I made mistake of not buying from Costco with the 5 year warranty. I went to Costco today and purchased a 55inch x90j for 1000$ with that 5 year warranty. I will never buy another TV with-ought that warranty, fuck Best Buy. If Samsung TV's didn't suck right now in my price range 1k id bye one. I have a Samsung Q6FN from Costco that works fine still. But I went with the Sony again, I feel safe now with that warrant and I believe Android OS has gotten better now they switch to google.
And I think its funny that Sony makes two different models of x90j's the X90j you get everywhere else like Best Buy, Walmart. Or the x90cj made just for Costco. Whats the difference??? Only one thing, the X90cj comes with that 5 year warranty!!!.... It makes you think maybe that the x90cj is built better?!?!?!?
Excellent video!! Evaluating the product in its perfect condition is always the right thing to do!! Congratulations on the exchange of the device and the final analysis well done. 👏👏👏👏👏
I've just got my X90J, set up,with my Atmos receiver, and the sound is far better than a cheaper TV which, regardless, had Atmos capability, which I had bought three months prior. The improvement in sound I put down to a better quality processor.and being twice as expensive as my first Atmos capable TV(can I say it? --A HiSense) and I have no regrets so I will put my name, to this Sony
Totally agree! These RU-vidrs only wants to have something to say to look like a “good review” even when they lie on saying “what they do not like”… 🤌 i.e. I want to sound smart 🧐, let’s say something like sound sucks!
I highly recommend people with x90j to look up "keep it classy tech x90j settings" on RU-vid. Basically he found that on x90j model Sony has made a slight bump on the blacks which makes details in black look bit too grey. So he provides a quick fix without any tools to adjust 10 point calibration. Which makes blacks not too grey without crushing any details.. makes you think if Sony did it deliberately to make their other models stand out just a bit more...
Great review as always. I just got my X90J. I got a great deal on it and could not pass it up . I guess I am Sony guy. This is my 3rd Sony. I would still be using my 15 year old 40 inch, but wanted a bigger screen and 4K. You are right about the sound and plan on getting a sound bar set up. I am movie person and movies in 4K look awesome. I am not a gamer, so I wont get to worked up over video games. Sports looks good, nice clear motion and don't seem to lag. I have a bright living room and can't notice any glare that is hindering watching in the day time. I enjoy your channel and videos very much. I like the unboxing and setup as well. Hopefully, I get a lot of years out of this set..
Thanks Caleb, it was your videos that encouraged me to pull the trigger on a A90J. I have only had it a day but I am very impressed. I feel that you give very sound advice (excuse the pun) in a way that is very easy top understand. I hope your channel continues to grow.
I have this TV. Sound is pretty good and drastically better than my pervious TV. 95% of people aren't going to notice anything you are talking about unless your a professional TV snob. For the money, it's pretty hard to beat unless you want to spend $3k or more on a 75" TV. Please stop comparing Sony with junk CHINESE TCL or Hisense.
I like the unboxing videos. They're informative and it can be useful seeing someone deal with the little traps that sometimes occur with things like fixing feet or cable management. What I would like to see with every TV is seeing them with a soundbar and/or a centre speaker on the TV unit from a normal viewing perspective. Some of them are too low and the soundbar interferes with the bottom of the screen, on others the feet don't allow enough room. I'd like to see every TV setup this way at some point in the process. It's one of those QoL things that gets overlooked.
That was a great review of a common customer experience. You buy product and from the start it appears to have a problem. You return the product and get another unit to see if the problem persists. I have done this, and it has gone both ways for me. Sometimes the replacement corrects the issue - sometimes it doesn't. So, doing a second review for a replacement unit is not unlike something I (or anyone really) would do. Consumers are not just financially invested in their purchases, there is an emotional investment as well. Return policies are commonplace now, and you don't have to live with a product you think is under-performing.
Thanks for the unboxing videos and reviews. I have the X90J and I love it. It gets very black I see very little blooming. I’m impressed being a Samsung guy (I return the qn80A) now a Sony guy lol
I thoroughly enjoy the unboxing, setup and picture adjustments segments. The insightful commentary and review is probably my favorite part. Your videos are also well edited and gives me a good sense of the TV’s I may be interested in purchasing.
I liked this TV because it ticked all the boxes of what I want on a TV that others just don't offer. I game too much on a TV to use an OLED so LG is basically out since their led catalog feels really underwhelming maybe when mini led becomes cheaper they would make something good for me. I also want to have all the software bells and whistles and that included having Dolby vision and atmos support and DTS. And this TV has all of that, something that LG and obviously Samsung don't have. TCL and Visio aren't an option in my market so I have to put my trust in Hisense and Sony but hisense has the imax support UT they say it doesn't include dts so that's a no for me. After seeing this review it makes me feel that Sony is definitely getting there to the TV that I want maybe they'll do it next year also having android TV is a huge plus, not relying in bad appstores.
These comparisons rarely seem to address build quality or expected reliability. Anecdotal reports online indicate some rising affordable brands may not stand up as well as Sony, LG, or other established brands (reports of floor models failing from big box employees, etc). Consumer Reports seems to support this theory. Trading off a bit of screen brightness or contrast for added years of reliable service seems like a pretty good deal, especially for a large and expensive appliance.
Sony X90J or TCL 6 series with google tv(2021 model)? I will be watching in a dark room most of the time so dark room performance matters a lot to me. I also will be gaming with my pc and ps5.
I like the unboxing because knowing how the TV is boxed ahead of time makes it easier to understand how to unbox it because not everything is a simple process.
I like the unboxing videos because it shows me the correct way to unbox a tv , I would have done this totally wrong had I not watched it , and as far as the stand for this particular tv , I would have searched for screws all day. I bought this tv and it so far has not disappointed me , aside from the sound , the rest of its features really make my series x and ps5 come alive more than they have in the past. Sure there are better TVs , but this is like having a ten thousand dollar tv coming from what I had before it. So I’m blown away by this tv and I’m very satisfied with it. 👍👍👍✌️✌️✌️
Is it worth buying a fire stick 4k max for this tv. I mainly stream. Would it give me a better visual experience. I have a cable streaming service instead of cable box. I found watching a 1080p movie on usb chip seems to be better quality then the streaming service
Love the unboxing videos, gets the excitement going for the full review. CANNOT WAIT for the X95J review and the final verdict. Keep up the good work, love your videos!!
Yes and no on un boxing. It depends on the day. It does help so if I get the tv I know exactly what to expect. It has helped me before. I thought I did something wrong then it hit me. You already mentioned that problem that was why I got the external stand before I opened the tv
Yes ,, keep the unboxing , they are a must !! , So .... is this tv better or worse than the Sammy N90A , also , you need to mention size >> 50" 43" 55>" some features are not available on all sizes of the same model tv !! thanks , D.
I enjoy the unboxing videos, I want to know what's in the box! I like to see the components spread out like you do for a clear idea of what to expect if I purchase that particular model. Thank you, for the time and effort in such a video.
Let me just say, for sustained viewing, this TV is bright AF when using Dolby Vision Bright. I turned down brightness by 20 points to save my eyes, and the picture is still colourful and amazing (especially with the new XR processor).
@@jm7720 I use a surround sound system, but yeah, even a sound bar would be better than these TV's speakers lol. What have you been using for Brightness? Do you change it from daylight to night?
I have this tv but let me say this it is not set to the best of its abilities out of the box that is completely untrue. You definitely need to go in and tweak settings like under inputs and change the quality of each input the 4 k enhanced and play with the picture settings. It is not set to full capabilities outside of the box. I bought this tv for gaming on my ps5. It is capable of VRR and obviously has 4K HDR/HDR10/DolbyVision/Imax Enhanced and has capability of running at 120hz refresh rate for gaming as well. I think the tv is fantastic but the one downside I will say is that it is an LED screen which obviously is not as good as a OLED screen. With that being said the software on the tv runs incredibly even though I use my PS5 most of the time when watching netflix or really doing anything and yes the sound could be better but I do have a sound system so I don't notice it. I would give this tv a solid 8.5/10 and I think its incredible for gaming and even watching movies especially when watching an Imax enhanced movie.
I get the brightness criticism, but honestly, I use this TV in a dark place, and it's already too bright! In fact, the TV it's replacing (Sony KDL 48W600B) was already too bright and was set at the lowest brightness, and that had a peak of
I’m a mid level sedan guy myself. The deciding factor for me was Google TV. I have every TV in my home running on the platform now and I didn’t want to worry about an additional remote in the room where i put my x90j.
My Sony Bravia XR 55X90J was perfectly delivered and set up twice by Geek Squad because I had it removed from my living room wall mount to my bedroom Init stand so that Geek Squad could mount my Sony Bravia XR 65X95J to my living room wall mount. Then Geek Squad connected my X90J to my 2011 Samsung UN55D8000YF 3D blu-ray 240 Hz amazing display after 11 years. Both of the latter are HDMI split for dual screen DVD viewing, plus both are connected to my old Mitsubishi VCR with RCA to HDMI converter and another HDMI splitter to watch my old video cassettes. Wow! Extra usage of old and new devices. I only need to improve audio with the VCR play. I already used a VCR heads cleaner.
Hi Caleb, Reading the comments of owners here, I think that you were possibly a little negative with your review. You mentioned that the X90J has a reflective coating, but I'm positive that it doesn't. I know that the X95J doesn't have it on the 65" model either, but does on the 75": and 85". Sorry for calling you out on this, but I have to keep you honest 😉. I watch almost all of your videos, and I will continue to do so in the future. I am waiting for another price drop on the X90J here in NZ, then I will pounce.
Caleb I don't know what you've been doing, but after watching some of your back catalogue, you look so much healthier now. Keep it up I absolutely love this channel. The unboxing is great and really helped me understand how to setup my own Sony Bravia TV.
What's the best gaming tv, like value wise. Don't mind spending but like not an extra 600+ for 10% extra brightness or some other stuff that doesn't matter much.
I don't watch the unboxings because I don't get the point of watching someone open a box but I like that you make them since other people do and I can just keep ignoring them without any negative impact on my live (please don't mix unboxing & review). I think you did the right thing with the first review because you were clear and open about the damaged unit and followed up as promised plus I understand the production side of things and not wanting to waste a whole day of shooting. Most negative comments were from disappointed/frustrated fanboys who needed to relieve their anger somehow or people who don't waste a thought on the people who provide these videos for free to them. 🤷♂️
I am deciding between these two TVs as well and I’m leaning towards the Sony X90J. I don’t think that the difference in picture quality is enough to just get a 55 in instead of a 65 in. The only reason I would get the c1 is if 100% of your time watching tv is in the dark.
I dunno, I hear a lot of not great reviews on sony TV's but i went to my local best-buy down the "cheaper" (not fancy display area) and the Sony TV's definitely had the some of the best color's, viewing angles, sharpness and no screen door effect. I was surprised to see it was nicer than a cheap LG nano tv. and a lot of QLED Tv's I guess sometimes you don't need fancy tech to look good.
Hi Caleb, what would your choice be: 77 Inch Sony A80J or the 75 Inch Sony X95J? The TV will mainly be used for streaming, movies, sports and some casual gaming on a Switch and PS5.
Please keep doing the unboxing videos. I think they are very informative. I also find them to be extremely entertaining. Lastly, it gets me hyped. They are like the trailer to the movie I want to see.
