Sony ZV E10 vs BMPCC 6k // 8 bit SLOG3 vs 12 bit BRAW

I did some quick tests comparing the image from Sony ZV-E10 to my main camera BMPCC 6k to check if I can use my Sony as a B camera for some projects. Those test are not very scientific but maybe some of you will find them useful :)

Super interesting and super nice results, as a ZV-E10 user I'm really pleased. Please make that video talking about your workflow and grading techniques on 8bit Slog3, those tips would be amazing to have. Keep up the great work! These types of videos are really useful.

Great presentation, thanks! While the two cameras are obviously very different, with your tweaks the ZV-E10 is most definitely usable for most, if not all, use case scenarios. Certainly good enough for anything expository in which the video quality is secondary to the content, and arguably good enough in any artistic context in which your audience isn't pixel-gazing because they're thinking about the cameras themselves. And in at least two instances here, I'm skeptical that anyone could distinguish them in a blind test.

Thank You, I plan to use Sony mostly for a quick dynamic shots for its great AF on a gimbal so it should work well as a B-camera 🙂

I think HLG, or what I use Cine2, are the best balance between fullest dynamic range and ease of grading. Always happy with just how far up that ZV-E10 punches in terms of picture quality. Just that 8bit continues to cap and limit it.

For me slog profiles are much easier to to use, I can just make a simple transform to Rec709 which is the correct way, with hlg and cine2 you have to transform it manually which I don't recommend. Watch my Slog3 workflow to see how easy it is. Everyone are repeating the same thing about slog and 8bit but they just don't know how to deal with that.

I would love for you to make a video of the sony zv e10 in low light. I loved your other video on how to use slog 3 and the truth is that I have gotten a lot of use out of it, but I still have problems in low light. What do you recommend? use cine 4 or hlg 2? or if you have any configuration that you can give me I would appreciate it

I use slog3 in low light too, maybe I should make a video about that because a lot of people don't understand how noise works 🙂 I will add this to my long list of videos to do 😅

You need adapters only when using lenses with different mount like Canon EF in my example. If it's native Sony E mount then you don't need one.

One of the cases where fancy cameras dont matter. Damn! the underrated sony e10 really held it's own against the infamous pocket 6k 😳🤯 I'm definitely impressed, like big time 💯🤘👊🙂

Thank You, what is in front of the camera and skills are the most important, but I can't say that camera doesn't matter at all, there are still some limitations to 8 bit , however it's not an excuse to not make nice looking images 🙂

@@VilkanVisions Well, there sure are limitations of shooting 8bit but for a "vlogging" camera like the e10 to go head to head with the "semi pro" pocket 6k just shows how underrated it really is & also how shallow minded we are as a society to tend to favour way more expensive options without realizing that some cheaper options can also get the job done 💯🤦

I'm not sure what you're asking but if you want to know how close they are, then of course BMPCC 6k is a lot better, couple levels higher in terms of image quality, color depth and codec. What BM can do easily, with 8bit I have to be very carefull to match it. There is less room for mistakes with Sony for sure. What I'm doing here is pushing Sony to it's limts to match the image to BM.

@@VilkanVisions Yes PLEASE! Everyone says not to use s-log on 8bit. They say to HLG with the ZV-E10 but I haven't been overly happy with my results. You're channel is a gem. thank you for sharing your skills.

As you stated in the video, in the outdoor test we can see exposure changes; but if I’m not mistaken, there were no exposure changes in slog3. Am I right? If yes, slog3 seems to be quite enough and no need to pay more for black magic.

I'm not sure if I understand what you mean but raw gives you me a lot of adventages especially with color, I can easily change WB in post with raw but without it I have to nail it exactly in every shot. With 8bit I have to be very precise and plan exactly every shot but with raw I don't have to worry too much. Of course if I'm shoooting for example travel video for myself I don't have to worry to much but when every shot is crucial and it needs to be matched then raw is irreplaceable.

At 4:01 in the video, the sony’s exposure is flattering with full auto settings, I mean it’s changing a few times. I think this is what you mean by “you can see exposure changes” And this seems not to be the case when you shoot in slog, just like blackmagic. I hope I could express myself, if I couldn’t sorry for my English; this point and your answer is important to me.

@@Dincerssssss ok I understand now, of course you can use full manual settings on Sony and I always do that but what differs these cameras the most is 8bit codec and 12bit raw, color depth and much more room for changes in post is what makes the biggest difference :) In the end it all depends how you plan to use the camera, in many cases 8bit is enough.

I don't see the point, I bought this camera mainly because of great AF. For manual focus I much prefer to use my main camera BMPCC 6k.

It's different because BM has mini XLR and phantom power plus normal jack. I'm personally not interested too much in doing comparison like that because if I use both cameras together I use it mainly without internal audio, only with music in the background.

That is something I noticed in sony zve10 vs black magic, the digital look .. which is why id go with the black magic 4k over sony more expensive but better quality, save your pennies go with black magic

Yeah BM is different league I own Pocket 6k for a couple of years and It's still much better than most of new hybrid cameras.

The viewers gotta know that u don't need raw if u don't use heavy grading. . . Braw shines in heave post process. This should 't be a comparison, different tools for different work.

Yes of course, raw is superior, I did it less for comparison and more for myself to check if I can match them for my own projects. Nobody is saying there is no difference, that's not the point of the video. These are the only cameras that I got and I bought them for different reasons.

in my opinion despite the larger sensor of sony, there are notable differences, there is a better light in black magic, to get better you should take a 12 mm focal lens 1.4 or 1.8 with af x the sony zve 10, black magic does not take valid photos x be a hybrid, but video side x approach you should have a fuji x-t4 or a sony a7 iii,

Sensor size is almost the same s35/apsc, the lens, focal lenght and distance was the same. I don't shoot a lot of photos so I don't care about that too much :)
