This easy to make facial toner is a great recipe if this is your first time making a toner. It was formulated around our wonderful Chamomile Distillate and includes an infusion made from fresh Chamomile Tea!
Difficulty Level: Beginner
Yield: 3 oz.
Estimated Shelf Life: 9-12 months
Approximate cost/lb: $0.90
Suggested Packaging: Bottle of choice with a fine mist sprayer or flip-top closure.
Suggested Retail Price: $12
Supplies: Supplies: Pyrex measuring cup or glass beaker, scale, rubber spatula or metal mixing spoons, funnel (optional), measuring bowls, alcohol for sanitizing, packaging of choice, immersion blender, temperature gun, tinfoil (optional), coffee filters, and pipettes.
(We recommend using rubber bands to affix your pipettes to the individual ingredient containers for reuse to avoid excessive plastic waste)
Ingredients:
• 2.600 oz. Chamomile Infusion (86.7%)
• 0.465 oz. Chamomile Distillate (6.7%)
• 0.030 oz. DL Panthenol (Vitamin B5) (1%)
• 0.140 oz. Propanediol (4.7%)
• 0.030 oz. Optiphen Plus (1%)
Directions:
Making the Infusion: Bring 3 oz. of Deionized Water to a soft boil. Pour over a bag of Chamomile Tea and allow too steep for 5-10 minutes. After steeping, remove the tea bag, and pour the infusion through a coffee filter to ensure you remove any particles from the tea.
Heating Phase: While the infusion is still warm, carefully add in the Chamomile Distillate, Panthenol, and Propanediol. Using an immersion blender, blend the mixture at low speed for about 2 minutes. One the mixture is well blended, and cooled, add in your Optiphen Plus and continue to mix for another 30 seconds to 1 minute. If necessary, pour the mixture through a coffee filter one more time.
Packing Off: Use a funnel (optional) to pour your toner into your packaging of choice and enjoy! Remember to label and date your product.
Because this is a toner, it is important that the product has appropriate pH. The ideal pH for skin falls between 4.5 and 5.5, so make sure you measure the pH (you can use a simple pH strip) before use. The easiest way to lower pH is to use citric
acid, and if you need to increase the pH you can use baking soda. Want to know more about pH, you can read all about it here.
To Use: Shake well. Apply product directly to face and pat with your hands or apply to a cotton pad and gently apply to face. Allow the product to dry before applying serums or moisturizers. This product is also a great pick me up and works great as a rejuvenating face mist you can use throughout the day.
Substitutions & Customizations: You can use this base toner recipe to make all kinds of incredible combinations! Switch out the chamomile distillate for rose, or cucumber for example, or play with different infusion options. If you remove the Optiphen plus, you must ensure that you replace it with another broad-spectrum preservative. Be advised that our estimated shelf life was calculated for this recipe only and is no longer valid if substitutions or alterations are made.

I LOVED this video. I love the level of details that you shared and the great information. I have a question about the process that I observed. When I am working in my lab, I am CONSTANTLY aware of potential microbial contamination. I noticed that you allowed the stick blender to go into the product without spraying it first with rubbing alcohol. and that you transferred product from one container to the next without spraying with alcohol first. Was that a step that was skipped because you were doing the video or am I actually engaging in unnecessary practices when I do it that way?

Hi Susan! You are doing the right thing, and should probably keep doing it the way you are doing it. It is better to err on the side of caution when sanitizing your lab environment. Things were cleaned before the video but also that we moved faster because it was on video, just as you guessed. We wrote a bit more about this in a blog post if you want to check it out: library.essentialwholesale.com/diy-basics-making-cosmetics-home/

I order a lot from this company, I am very selective about what I order to offer to my clients I am an esthetician and my clients love the toners because they are clean feeling and light, and eye cream and moisturizers make your skin feel fresh and tight and a clean feeling. if you are not sure about what to order call them they will politely direct you to the right product for your skin type if you are not a professional skin provider and are just a customer call in I call in so I can get an understanding about what they formulate in their products.

Excuse Me, what is the 『preservative』 called in Cosmetic terms?

If we added an oil we would need an emulsifier correct? Or could we use a solubilizer? I know some people dont mind shaking their product before use and I think its becoming more of a trend to limit ingredients, but does it seem very professional?

The propanediol used in this recipe is actually a wonderful solubilizer as well as acting as a humectant. I would suggest trying to add a small amount of oil. If it’s essential oil, you won’t need much anyway and if it’s a carrier oil, the propanediol is already acting as an emollient and humectant so again, you won’t need much there either.

We did not do a shelf life and always recommend that if you are selling the product, to please make sure you get a 3rd party test on it for preservation and shelf life. However, similar products to this that we make are 24 months.

Absolutely. Any distillate can replace part of a water phase or 100% of another distillate. pH is key.
