I know this is responding to an old post but just felt I had to relate my experience on a "custom fitting" by an 'experienced' fitter.I went with no preconceived ideas and would trust what the expert said.I had no idea on what to expect and didn't know what to ask or anything and the so called fitter put a G2 7iron in my hands and because I hit it ok told me that this was the model I needed and on his recommendation I purchased the G2 irons,5 & 3 woods together with G2 driver and cart bag, all in all a nice sell for him, I was never asked properly about what I thought and it wasn't until later on that I found that the "expert" was actually a Ping ambassador so was never going to try me in anything else.I believe that before going for a fitting make sure that the fitter is truly not connected to a particular brand and make sure you try what you want to try after all golf is expensive when buying branded models .

Hi Sophie, really do enjoy your videos and your lovely personality and your candidness. Also that you love your new I525 irons! However, for this fitting and the average gain in 7.6 metres in carry, the i525 7 iron has 30.5 degrees loft compared to the P770 loft of 33.0 and 6 iron of 29.0. So the i525 7 iron is closer to the P770 6 iron than the 7 iron. If every degree of loft equates to about 2.5 metres, then there is not much difference between the i525 and P770 in carry and you are really clubbing close to a P770 six and a half iron. Just my thoughts. Go well and enjoy the new i525's!

This is iron fitting. The gain is not just in distance, Sophie probably had her prior irons fitted, so any gain will be minimal

My thoughts exactly Matthew. Many manufacturers are strengthening lofts and calling it performance gains. Likelihood is that the stronger lofts and optimised shaft has done the trick more than anything else. The trade off seems to be spin loss, which I am not sure is always a great thing for scoring irons unless distance really is a concern. Not sure I buy that stuff about angle of descent making up for it either… That said the i525 is a lovely looking club, add some classical Ping forgiveness and a soft forged feel then I suspect it is more about the subjective gains from the club for someone of Sophie’s excellent ball striking capabilities!

This is brilliant, I was there for a putter fitting not long before you were there! The putter fitting was game changing for me, almost eliminated 3 putts with a proper fitted putter, I can just get my pace control dialled in now. I always keep meaning to go back for my irons next when I feel good enough to upgrade, highly recommend anyone to go through the fitting experience, it's great!

I had a really low swing speed , so much so that my golf pro told me to dump my old driver. Got Ping fitted G425 driver 12 degree loft and never looked back. It's a %$$$g fairway finder and I was so impressed, I purchased the g425 3 hybrid, 5 wood and irons. Best purchase I have ever made. The irons were fitted with regular steel shafts and put an extra six yards on the shots but again, they were soooo forgiving.

Collected my 525's last month following fitting; picked up a lot of distance for no effort - eg 4 iron up from 185 to 205 yards carry. Previous clubs were titleist AP2's (fitted about 9 years ago). Really happy with the change and would recommend them to anyone - but you really need fitting to get the right shaft to get the best out of them. Great review of the fitting process - definitely talk to the fitter about what you're liking/disliking and watch how many balls you hit, easy to get fatigue creeping in. To comments about lofts; the fitter pointed out that the 525 7 iron loft was a little stronger than my AP2 but the peak height of the ball was coming out higher than with the AP2...shafts and head construction make a lot of difference...

Always look forward to your reviews Sophie. I tried everything in the Player's Distance category, including the PING i525 (just didn't work for me). The final cut for me was Mizuno Pro 225, Cobra Forged Tec (2021 version), and the new Wilson D9 Forged. (Loved your review of the Wilson!) The winner for me was the Wilson with Recoil ESX 460 R shaft. Fantastic feel, tight dispersion, and distance equal to the Cobra. Enjoy your new clubs and keep the reviews coming!

P 770 loft is 33 vs I 525 is 30,5 for a 7 iron, so yeah offcourse you picked ballspeed, carry and lower trajectory. As long as landing is ok though everything is fine, and just for the brain hitting an iron less into the green is prolly the main point of this. Awesome video again.

Great review. I did a basic fitting on the i525, also red dot. Moving from Mizuno MP20 blades also 2* flat. I was also looking for some help to get into Cat1. Tested them against P770 and Mizuno 223’s. Found i525 to work consistently gaining an average of 10 yards carry and a tighter dispersion and in terms of “feel” no real issues and spin high 5000’s. Biggest issue is not being able to test the other clubs and work through gapping at the bottom end of the bag into wedges. Also think don’t really need anything more than a 6 iron before the yardages start overlapping with the hybrids. Maybe a trip to Gainsborough is required soon!

Tom Wishon talks about building pilot clubs. I've done that and it worked out a treat. 4 identical Ping 6 irons with different shafts. Had them for a month before deciding. Money well spent. I have similar numbers to Sophie - should've tried Nippon Zelos shafts, they are excellent - stability of steel with flex/weight of graphite.

Super advice for anyone who is getting a fitting! Really appreciate Sophie putting out such a good video which will help so many golfers! Do you think that golfers should be able to test more than just the seven iron during a fitting or even potentially all of the irons? I understand why companies do it, but I struggle with the logic that a certain spec for a 7 iron can be linearly applied to the 4 iron or wedge.

I agree. The concern I have with the i525 irons is once you get to the PW it has 13 degrees of bounce which I thought would work against Sophie since she doesn’t hit down on the ball.

It is also worth noting that the loft of the P770 if they were in standard loft the 7iron is 33deg and the Pings are 30.5deg which explains the loss of distance in the TMs.

Hi Sophie, why not decrease lofts 1 to 2 degrees? This will give you more spin and height and approximately the same distance you had before? I was playing the graphite design tour ad iron 85 stiff shafts for a couple years in both mizuno HMB and then in srixon zx4s. Currently I am playing the PXG gen 3 xp irons with the UST recoil dart stiff and have found a match made in heaven. We have about the same swing speed, so I always love your reviews as your results are similar to mine. Not sure what it is, but since I went with the PXG irons, my handicap has dropped 4 points to 11 now.

Did I miss the discussion about different lofts between the p770 and the i525? If specs were standard on both clubs, then i525 7 iron have 2.5* stronger loft than p770 - the extra 7 yards are not so surprising. Right? To some degree, you could have “power lofted” your p770 to achieve lower launch with more ball speed (=more distance).
@seancook2264
@seancook2264 2 года назад
I tested the P770 and felt there was not enough camber on the leading edge. I am by no means steep but found the irons just did not get in and out of the ground as well as either my current MP20 or the i525 with its wide cambered sole.

Sophie, love your stuff, but an iron fitting using only the 7 iron is a lacking. I certainly hope that you were able to try longer and shorter irons and just didn't have time to include them in the video. This looks like the same fitting you get for free at any retailer. I can't dis-agree with your choice of head or the logic of the stiffer shaft in graphite, but will that combo let you get a 4 iron in the air? I have been "fit" multiple times by different fitters in this same way and have always ended up disappointed.

Sorry but this was a really bad fitting, but pretty standard for the fitting industry which says a lot about the quality if the industry. Sophie gained carry distance because the i525 has stringer9 lofts than the P770, there is 3.5 degree difference between the lofts of the 2 irons, a point which was not explained. The second issue is Sophie only got to try a 7i it is ordering 4i to PW. She has no idea whether the lofts of the longer irons are functional (for example I know that with my swing it it is pointless trying irons with lofts of less than 25 degrees, I just struggle to launch the ball, and instead I should switch to a hybrid), and she has no idea of gapping. The i525 for some people has significant gapping issues, Sophie should have been asked to try the 5i and 9i as well as the 7i.

I play the i210 and PING wedges starting at 58 for LW and decreasing by 4 degrees for each club down to the 6 iron. The 525 irons have a 5 degree difference from GW to 8 iron and then 4.5 degrees to the 7 iron @ 30.5 degrees (just .5 degrees more than my 6 iron). So with the i525 set there are 7 clubs from 58 to 30 degrees....in my i210 set there are 8 clubs which cover the same span of loft. It would seem that there's more variance with having one less club.

Great review Sophie, I went to my local Fitting Centre on Saturday morning, I have the old Taylormade M4 irons with graphite shafts, I so wanted to game the i525, but they were coming up 7 yards shorter with a tighter dispersion than my own clubs, tried a variety of clubs and shafts and nothing could compare with my current set, the advice I was given was, to stay with my own irons and get them altered by 1 degree upright, I appreciated there honest opinion, but left a little bit down hearted that I could not game my club of choice 🥲 should I go elsewhere for a 2nd opinion? I would go to Gainsborough if I thought they could do it for me 🤷‍♂️

I’m taking tighter dispersion over 7 yards on irons every time.

@@lawbinson They said, if I get my irons altered by 1 degree upright, I will see the tighter dispersion with my own clubs 🤷‍♂️ I so wanted the i525, I think 🤔 they are a super looking club

@@grahamsmith539 did they give you options to power / retro spec the i525? ping has that option for loft changes. Might get you closer to your distance

Hello Rob, no just the standard loft, which I assume is similar to my own.

@@grahamsmith539 the m4 are indeed stronger lofted and longer shafted that i525 - even in power spec
