Hey folks!
Is it really true that it took MTG Alpha boxes decades to become expensive?
And how does that compare to Sorcery Alpha boxes, that just hit 1000 bucks?

do you think a sorcery alpha box is worth 1000$!? pls let me know in the comments! 😁👊🏻

Scrye is accurate. Beta and Alpha started to top $1000 by July 1994 -- I looked at Origins 1994 and they were already there. Unlimited was getting close too (I remember $800). By Origins 1995 they were up to what was indicated in Scrye. The biggest trick was finding them -- prices mean nothing if the product can't be had.

thanks for adding to the conversation, penguinlust! and i totally agree, availabilty was the biggest problem, even in 94 already! 😁👊🏻

I still think that most people buying are collectors and investors. I don’t think the game has taken off with players just yet. So I’m still a little skeptical about the prices shooting up really high. If the game becomes popular to play, then it will be a huge opportunity for those of us who got in early.

i honestly am not sure about the base yet, chase. i believe that many players have backed alpha too, as well as collectors abd investors, because of the old school appeal. beta is hyped, though, so the majority might be collectors and investors that buy it. i know a few friends who bought the starter brick and a box, though, and they bought it to play. so yeah, we’ll see. potential is there, that’s for sure. this game is more beautiful and better than FaB, and look where that is. i still see this going somewhere, if the beta print run is reasonable.

@angryGTS 7 месяцев назад
The beta print run isn't much bigger than alpha. Its sitting pretty at about 50,000-60,000 boxes. Most stores online and brick and mortar are sold out. Team Covenant has boxes because they are acting kind of like a distributor with their partnership in the U.S.

@@angryGTSi would be very happy with that amount, angryGTS. i really hope they have not overprinted the beta! that would be a disaster. i estimated and hoped for 50k, so if that would hold true, everything is fine 😁👊🏻

I'm curious as to why Beta Boxes were so much more than Alpha in 2004. Is it because of Volcanic Island? That's really the only thing I can think of. Maybe lack of sales data sent in to Scrye?
@NerdAndProudOfIt
@NerdAndProudOfIt 7 месяцев назад
it might have to do with several factors, shadowcloud. like i explained in the video, alpha was not interesting to players and beta actually was more desired than alpha for a very long time. beta power was more sought after at conventions, i experienced that first hand. the corrected mistakes like the volcanic might play a role, yes. and overall the missing seal, how to identify boxes and sinple availabilty may have played a big role in beta climbing quicker 👊🏻.

Alphas were tournament illegal from 1995 to 1999. After that, they were only allowed in opaque sleeves. What was really nasty was an opponent could demand you play with unsleeved cards. I don't know when that went away as I was out of the game, but it made playing with Alphas a potentially risky proposition until that rule went away.
@NerdAndProudOfIt

@@penguinlust6749 indeed. like you say, and i said as well, alpha was avoided by players. we could not use them back then. 👊🏻🙏🏻

Sorcery is heavily tapping into a very particular niche right now: Millenials (and possibly some boomers) who have been aching for something that resembles the early years of Magic that isn't printed to oblivion. I'm not sure if it has much sticking power beyond that; if that desire is sated and those people don't feel the need for continued hits as the years go on, the game will fall into obscurity. Especially if they don't get a competitive play program off the ground that will drive desire for authentic, powerful cards. Because if the cards are unattainable due to price and you don't need real ones for your kitchen table (or TTS for that matter), then there is no incentive to ever buy them. Is Sorcery Alpha worth $1000? Yes, right now it absolutely is because it's exactly what a small but dedicated group of people have been wanting. But it won't be worth $1000 forever unless the game takes off like Flesh and Blood did.

thanks for the interesting comment, asaffin1! really appreciate it! having a game that is collectable is indeed one of the main things sorcery has going for it. i would not reduce it to that, though. the original art is fantastic as well and the gameplay is a lot of fun too. but it indeed taps into the nostalgia people are looking for. i don’t the the itch for that will dissapear. and i wouldn’t underestimate the contious need for a good game with all those things going for it with a slow collectable approach. kitchen table is still played with real cards. and for that matter sorcery has a much stronger start and following than FaB did in the beginning. but yeah, i guess we’ll see what happens 😁👊🏻

@@NerdAndProudOfIt Absolutely. To be clear, I love Sorcery. I backed it for the art and the presentation and the idea of a "classic 90s CCG." I keep a small collection of old, dead card games simply because I love their presentation. Even if Sorcery is added to that graveyard, I'll still enjoy having it. But you have to be realistic as well. CCGs are currently traversing one of the worst bear markets in their 30 year history, and there are no easy answers for how to successfully navigate it. If Sorcery overprints Beta to get cards into peoples' hands, then the collectability vanishes and Alpha will erode away (Metazoo is a striking example of the terrible results of trying to capitalize too hard on your own success). And if they underprint, they run the risk of just not having enough of a slice of the market to stay relevant, which also results in Alpha eroding as people lose interest. I think Sorcery is awesome and I want it to succeed. The reality is that its long-term success is balanced on a knife's edge right now, and we just have to take a measured response to it.

@@asaffin1all good, man! did not interpretate your comment in a negative way 😁👊🏻! and yes, sorcery has a lot going for it, but indeed, there have been enough examples where things have gone wrong. you don’t wanna know how much tcg’s i tried over the years 😂. some of them actually pretty good and with a lot kf financial and tournament support, like the VS system. i guess we’ll have to see. up to know sorcery is doing things correctly. i hope they find the right balance. 🙏🏻

@@asaffin1well said. Erik has a pretty good finger on the pulse of the market, strangely. I'm optimistic. I did 3 alpha boxes at Kickstarter and only opened 1, sitting in the other 2 waiting for them to take me to the moon😅. I bought and opened 5 beta boxes so far and going for a full set. I do love the game and cards. Natural progression of what I felt for MTG in 97
@asaffin1

@@Shishkebarbarian I've got two Alpha boxes myself... Very tempted to sell one now and make my Alpha and Beta cost basis around zero. I'll regret it if they do go to the moon, but if they end up settling down and all my product is "free" I won't have any reason to feel bad.

Two different eras, two different markets, two different markets. Comparison is not even a thing. Is like saying driving a car 100mph in 1920 and 2020.

i wouldn’t go that far, but as i said in the vid, different times in terms of value of money and different approach of entering the market. still, it’s not correct to say that mtg needed 30 years to get expensive and sorcery therefor per definition is a bubble. and you can be negative about my way of looking at things or you can watch tge vid and start a conversation 😁👊🏻!

Is there a special reason a sorcery box has 39 booster packs inside?

yes, azncless: the alpha has 39 boosters, as it took a while longer. for the kickstarter to be delivered. therefor they added 3 boosters to the box as a thank you for the backers patience. 😁👊🏻

like i hate to rain on peoples parade but can we stop pretending that there isn't so much artificial demand. if people only thought of sorcery as a tabletop game or even a rare collectable the prices would be way more reasonable. there are buyers in the market that think this is the mtg alpha box 2.0 and see it as nothing else. again just to keep that in mind. the moment sorcery as a company does something they don't like. or they start to lose faith. prices will drop.
@NerdAndProudOfIt

hey beck! thanks for the kind comment, appreciate it! and you are not raining on anyone’s parade, just by voicing you oppinion! all good! 😁👊🏻 why is there artificial demand if people are buying the product? i think that is actual demand. there might be artificial scarcity, for a non organic growing tcg, i fully agree 😜! i believe, though, that players and collectors actually are longing for a game that is more collectable, that has original art and that does not release an expansion very two weeks! but hey, we’ll see! 😁🙏🏻
