James: "I will sacrifice whatever it takes to stop her." Watts: "Oh I hope you do, James. I hope you do." This here wasn't one of Watts' snarky remarks, he truely wishes Ironwood to sacrifice people, so that they can be devided. Salem's primary goal is to devide humanity...

This is because most people don't realize that having a right to an opinion does not mean one is entitled to their opinion. When a content does not match what they think should happen people will rage against it disregarding the fact that the content is made for an audience in mind and not a single person. The rant videos that get put up doesn't help much as it encourages such bad behavior. This is why I enjoy reviewers like SOS, Murder of Birds, Thatkaitodan etc as they actually take in the context and details of each episode before formulating their analysis.

This is THE best episode so far in my opinion. The confrontation with Ironwood at the end of this episode is so good and so tense that I start shaking every time from the expectation. It's beautiful. I also have to applaud the voice acting. Weiss' dismay at the threat of martial law, Watt's rant at Ironwood, and Tyrian's Voice acting all throughout the season. Perfection. Especially last episode when Tyrian first met Robin in the alley, his raw fury and rage was easily audible. As for the Summer scene, I think Ruby has some kind of traumatic memory of Summer she's forcing herself to forget. Other than that, why would she believe Salem? There's no reason to believe it isn't some mind game. (Also the image of Summer on the cliff definitely looks different, and now has a creepy feel thanks to the sound effects, so I feel as we see that shot more and more over later episodes, it will reveal more about Ruby's last memory of her mom until it reveals something) We've got next episode and the fights within, and then we have the finale. For those who don't know, this means Volumes 7 and 8 are going to be one arc, so we're likely to be left with a cliffhanger of some sort. I can't wait.

The whole season we saw team RWBY become more trusting of Ironwood and Aseops, training and becoming "friends". All the while planting tiny seeds of the moral differences between the two teams. All that made this turn of Ironwood and the Aseops more emotional. Some great writing by CRWBY.

I wouldn't call it salvation when Salem can just attack the rest of Remnant and get the other relics to attack Atlas anyway. I don't think he was "falling" or going off the deep end.. It's just his perspective vs theirs. This conflict has been portrayed, even if briefly, in superhero movies like Avengers Age of Ultron. When Ultron is levitating the city, Tony decides that it may be best to destroy the city, sacrificing everyone on it to save everyone else on Earth and Natasha was agreeing with it. Steve suggests trying to save everyone and is determined not to sacrifice a single soul. Either perspective could have gone horribly wrong in the end because the simple truth is that no one can predict whats gonna happen. Neither perspective is wrong as they are both gambles. Luckily, in the movie, Fury showed up with the helicarriers to basically make Cap's morally just solution the right one. This issue with Ironwood and Team RWBY is the same way except that there is no 3rd party to come and make the decision any easier. No one is right or wrong. Also no one labeled Tony or Natasha as 'going off the deep end' or 'falling from grace' after that. It's just that Ironwood has his Tin Man schtick that he's supposed to follow so the audience almost expects anything morally wrong or gray that Ironwood does to be some sort of loss of his heart when its just a non-perfect human making the tough choices. (Also I know he's a villain vol 8, but I detest the way they executed his "turn." It just wasn't smooth or fitting of his character at all. I just like to pretend vol 8 didn't happen to him) Vol 8 is proof to me that sometimes, following a character gimmick is harmful to character writing when the character themselves clash with what the gimmick demands that they be. At some point, you just gotta create your own character instead of EVERY SINLE ONE of them being a reference to something.

"Now this... _This_ is much closer than what I was expecting." (Qrow - Episode 1) He was not kidding... -Watts vs. Ironwood The battles/fights in RWBY never seem to disappoint. Watts using the terrain to his advantage, a gunfight/hand to hand battle, plus Watts almost outwitting Ironwood, only for Ironwood to show just how far he is really to go to beat Salem and her forces...And then you add a new theme song... Yep, instant epic. I do believe Watts is alive though. As much as it would be easy to just drop him into the lava, Watts would have information that Ironwood would want. It was the same way as to why he imprisoned Torchwick. But I do wonder, why did Ironwood bring Watts' bag with him without checking it out first? Seems like something that should have been done before he brought it with him. Would have saved him a jump-scare... -Black Queen(s) Cinder seems to be using the same tactic as before in order to locate the Winter Maiden that she used to find the Fall Maiden in Beacon. Using the fear and panic from others to manipulate them into showing their hand so that she could just find the Maiden and kill her. She really is Salem's apprentice... It may be that though, that Cinder is still operating on her own outside of Salem. She's merely using the situation to advance her own plans and Salem's forces just happened to be there. She had to switch tactics to do that and fortunately for her, the situation was one she could capitalize on. The scene with Salem just shows the true terror of her by her presence alone. Before these, the only time anyone else has seen Salem was either from visions (Jinn) or illusions (Emerald) or from what other say about her. But her speaking with the teams directly and how she affected them shows the true strength of fear she exuded. Even when she was talking to Ironwood (with a smile no less), it was clear than he was afraid of her. And Ruby... as bravely (and awesome) as she spoke out against Salem, all Salem had to do was speak of Summer and Ruby broke down. -Short Circuiting Eyes We already know that Ruby has yet to master her powers, but this shows a greater limit than thought. A slight theory... her eyes may only work best with a clear and pure mind. When she used them against the Leviathan Grimm as well as the Apathy Grimm and Cinder, she didn't seem to suffer from any damaging effects. But in the case with Pyrrha's death, she was knocked unconscious for several days. Now perhaps it may be because that was the first time she used them, but it may also be possible that in a situation where it is too late to save someone, there is a backlash against the bearer, possibly perhaps from negative emotions, or powerful emotions? So Silver Eyes = Mangenkyo Sharingan…? -Breakdown Ironwood is playing right into Salem's hands... Between the panic caused by Cinder, the fear caused by Salem declaring her imminent attack along with everything else and he has lost control. Ironwood is good on fighting in the midst of a crisis, but when it comes to a perceived threat, he is quick to make pre-emptive (and hasty) moves, without knowing where the threat is coming from. _"Why must your answer to everything involve a triumphant display of military bravado?!" (Glynda, Volume 2)_ He did have a point about what Ruby did. Even though they did tell him the rest of the truth, it came at the worse time. But he could have dealt with it once the current crisis was dealt with. But with the threat of Salem's attack, he's been pushed from panic to paranoia and now he's making rash decisions. Ironically, he is doing exactly what Ruby and the others was worried he would be. _"...He's a bit prone to overreacting." (Blake - Episode 7)_ Ruby even pointed out that uniting the world was their real chance, but Ironwood only cares about protecting Atlas, willingly sacrificing Mantle in the process. What's really interesting is that he used the same words that Cinder used the previous episode. In a way, it shows the viewers that Salem (and Cinder) are truly one step ahead of him. So now a fight between team RWBY and the Ace-Ops, plus we don't know how Clover will react, and add to the fact that Tyrian is there, plus Cinder is on the way to the Winter Maiden and Oscar is missing and...yeah... Volume 3 all over again...
@nikolab.4065
@nikolab.4065 4 года назад
A possible answer as to why Ironwood didn't check the bag first: Since Atlas is a science kingdom and Ironwood is very cautious, he maybe wanted to get it analyzed first before opening it and not fall into a trap. For all he knows, it may have been a bomb. And Atlas could very possibly have the technology to check it out. And maybe he could even do it from his office, who knows.
@sassui90
@sassui90 4 года назад
On the Only caring about Atlas part, isn't Ironwood trying to continue the plan but with Atlas instead of the arena? given he has to ditch Mantle and get out of reach asap to do that. "New music? Sounds like it." It's a variation on the music we heard when we were first shown the arena in Volume 3. You're the first reactors I've seen acknowledge that Ironwood is acting only on the assumption that Salem is heading for Atlas. It's one of the things I enjoyed about hearing Cinder gripe about how Vacuo was supposed to be the next target. She and Ironwood have both said, "The timeline's changed," and I can't help but feel they're both mistaken about that. If so, Salem got lucky. Ironwood had deviated from her plans for him, and then Cinder drags him back on course with a single quiet move. One of the things people don't appreciate about luck: it's just an opportunity. If you aren't prepared to react and adapt to it, it means nothing. Props for comparing Atlas to Australia. That was a Risky joke, but you played it well.

First, the Lion became a coward. Then, the Wizard became a liar. And now, the Tin Man has become heartless. The thing I love about this conflict is that neither side is entirely right. RWBY and Co want to help those in need. They hold onto some naive sense of hope, that if they fight just a little longer, they can save everyone. However, they fail to see that they’ve run themselves ragged and can’t go on much longer. On the other hand, Ironwood and Co are realizing the futility of winning this battle, so they decide to leave Mantle behind to save their resources (the relics and the Maiden). However, they’re abandoning the people that need their help, and by isolating themselves further, they’re doing exactly what Salem wants. But next chapter... we really can’t have nice things anymore, can we?

A lot of people have theories that moment with Ruby and Summer was like some sort of repressed memory, but honestly I don't think Ruby was really old enough to have any memories of Summer. I don't think Salem induced some sort of repressed trauma/memory shit of Summer, I think it was more an attack of her /image/ of Summer. That image of Summer at the cliff is an idealized embodiment of who Summer represents to Ruby: Hope, Love, the will of man and it fuels her power to use her silver eyes. But then with just a few words, it cements in the colder reality of it: Summer is dead. And her death was likely a grisly one. All that hope and determination snuffed out with a "You're not any different from the rest of the mortals who tried going up against me, because I killed them all and I will kill you too"

I think team RWBY is wrong about standing and fighting when Salem comes. If she's really coming, then Mantle and Atlas are doomed and that would almost assuredly get them all killed. And while Ironwood might have a more logical plan on paper, I think it's still futile. My guess as to what the best thing to do at this point would probably be to evacuate as many people as possible from both Mantle and Atlas. Otherwise this feels like a no-win scenario for the good guys. I can't wait to see how they handle these last couple episodes though. Regardless, this is one of the best episodes if the series so far.

May I remember you that Penny is the official protector of Mantle? If you consider the Name of the next Episode (which I haven't seen yet, so if my assumptions are correct, please don't flag them as Spoilers!) There may have a conflict between Penny and Winter / Ruby / Ironwood in the making, depending on Penny's choice which one to follow. Her only real friend Ruby, her employee Ironwood, or whoever Winter decides to support. I am really nervous About the Outcome because I really fear that Penny sides with Ironwood and Ruby will have to put her down herself.

Nah Ironwood’s plan is garbage. He’s not getting the relics out of danger, Cinder already being there makes abandoning Mantle utterly pointless. Not to mention that there’s bound to be huge unrest with the Mantle citizens that evacuated to Atlas. He’s now got to quash a rebellion right on his doorstep. Also he’s basing all this on the black queen, there is no real intel that he has that means anything, as far as he knows the two operatives in Solitas have just been neutralized, and Cinder is here and the only thing she’s done is send him a message. All he’s doing is playing into her plan, while he may not have known what her plan was, he should have known that the black queen was an attempt to manipulate him. Also Atlas would now be cut off from their sources of dust. It’s not sustainable to fuck off into the sky, especially when the city he’s taking with him isn’t secure in the slightest. He has to fight team RWBY, ORNJ, Qrow, Robyn and the huntresses, The Mantle citizens, Cinder, and then on top of that Salem’s army is allegedly coming. He made a dumb move, he was acting out of paranoia, and not out of any logic driving this decision.

Just throwing this out in the open... Ruby’s mother is “assumed” dead. She never came back from a mission, and Salem never said she killed her. She only said that they spoke to each other and that Ruby’s mother was wrong too. Heavily implying she’s dead but NOT confirming it. With this show, if you don’t have a body or a backstory, you can’t trust the death, Cinder proved that after her fall from the Spring vault. (Summer Rose, Adam Torres, Dr Watts- Death Not Confirmed)

RWBY as a show is very good in using fanservice and hype to impress and look good, the fights were cool with interesting concepts, but once you calm down and begin paying atention to the details it starts to make less sense. I like the things that happened, like Ironwood and team RWBY having moral problems, or Wats and Tyrian being only sacrificial pawns, or even most of the controversial things that happened in the episode 12 of this volume. What I didn't like was the delivering. Team RWBY (and friends) has been less than a good role model, and yet the way the show puts it they are always right, they don't suffer consequences for their mistakes, and when they do, those consecuences are seen as unfair and evil, they always have to have the high moral ground, even if it is supposed to be a grey situation like this one (try and save everyone because is the ideal thing to do even if they don't have a real plan other than to fight, or sacrificing thousands to try and secure the things that must never fall in the hands of the enemy because otherwise the whole world is doomed). RWBY getting angry at Ironwood for using a lie to lure out Wats and keeping a secret until it were safe to reveal it, and yet they also told more lies, never trusted Ironwood even if he did trust them (trained them, gave them better weapons, told them every detail of his plan, gave them official hunter licenses, let them participate in the plans without keeping a spying eye on them), and acted behind his back, revealing very important information to a woman that hadn't done more than steal and raid in all this volume. Or things like Ruby suddenly having clear memories of her mother and feeling despair, even if she was supposed to be a baby. Having a little montage of the teams training a couple of days and with that becoming so much stronger than the most experienced and best trained team of hunters in Atlas. And some more stuff that happens in episode 12.
@Omegafire17
@Omegafire17 4 года назад
I think the trap many people fall into is equating them arguing for what they think is right = having the moral high ground, and/or that not having the moral high ground doesn't mean you still can't make points that are true. That's as simple as thinking the world is black and white imo, when in reality it's not like that. An absolute cynical jerkass can make a brutally honest observation that's still true, a dumbass can still say something that everyone agrees makes sense, and a hypocrite can still have a point behind their behavior that does validate them (even if the hypocrisy does undercut it), and so on. ^In that vein, Team RWBY are in the same boat; they're arguing for what they think is right, yet are facing the consequences of having lied because they weren't sure who to trust (among other things), and are trying to deal with it by not giving ground on what they believe (because not arguing with it would be an even bigger wrong on their part). If Ironwood and the Ace-Ops had just yielded to their points without much fight despite the former's paranoia reaching critical mass, THAT would be them being in the right... but with what does happen, neither side is explicitly right (or wrong); it's just a medley of grey, each side trying to do their best with the situation, and not yielding to their beliefs. As far as Ruby's vision of her mother, sometimes little stuff like that - particularly of the people you loved - can linger in your mind even when you were very young; it doesn't happen to everyone, but it does happen, especially to a point where you focus on an idealized version of the memory to hold onto. Regardless though, it's something you can easily write off under suspension of disbelief imo. And the point of Team RWBY beating the Ace Ops isn't so much the idea that a "few days" of training (when the montage implied that it was at least a month or so, given various little details) made them outright better than the Ace Ops; it was that they knew the Ace-Ops tactics and moves in addition to the training itself, AND they had teamwork/trust to work against the Ace-Ops utter lack of such... which is hardly an unrealistic outcome. Ruby's statement was more a boast than a literal statement-of-fact that way ^I could say similar stuff about the rest of what happens in episode 12 as well, because I'm always considering the merits of both sides, every aspect, and so on even as I watch. But enough has been spoiled already lol
@yiledute
@yiledute 4 года назад
@@Omegafire17 I'm not arguing who is in the right or the wrong, after all this is all a grey area, what I want to comment on is the delivery of that situation. Because the way things are being shown and said, regardless of anything, is putting team RWBY as the ones in the right, the show is strying very hard to make them look like that to the audiences, and the evidence is in all the fans hating on Ironwood and the Ace-ops while pracing and getting excited over anything RWBY does. And sure, there are cases of persons that remember certain specific memories as babies, but the thing is that we have never seen Ruby remember any of it before this volume, and yet the way it was shown tells us that Ruby remembers well enough to have an emotional little crisis just because Salem mentioned her mom, and no signs of magic were shown to imply that Salem used illusions or mental things to put her in that state. And about the training sure, lets say that they trained for at least a month, RWBY learning the Ace-ops styles also mean that the Ace-ops know everything RWBY can do because they were the ones that trained them. In a teacher-student battle both sides know everything from each other, and the winner is always decided by who is better (faster, stronger, etc). So by winning and having barely any damage, RWBY is now much better to them according to the show. Besides, the montage didn't show all the Ace-ops training all of team RWBY, and us as audience assuming they did even if it wasn't shown or said before is speculating. One thing is to make the audience think and speculate things that may happen or get revealed later, but to make the audience fill in the gaps of stuff that already happened is lazy in my opinion, because people will assume what they want and not what is supposed to be. An example of this is the big misunderstanding of the relationship between Clover and Qrow. Who were just friends instead of the speculations and interpretations many fans made of the unclear hints between the two.
@Omegafire17
@Omegafire17 4 года назад
@@yiledute I would argue "making it look like that" doesn't automatically equate to "they actually are like that", but that's probably a difference of opinion on our parts. As for Ruby, you forgot about last Volume's finale, where she used a memory of her mother to activate her silver eyes - ie, the memory of Summer was clearly important to her, and thus helped put her in that state now because of that fact. The RWBY vs Ace Ops fight, I think is also a difference of opinion, as I legitimately believe a team who works together can beat a team who doesn't even if there's a difference in skill - not because of the friendship angle, but simply because it's a fact that the former tend to do much better. And as such, Team RWBY beating them doesn't equate to 'they suddenly are the best', Ruby's boast notwithstanding; they just managed a great feat, but they still have a long way to go. Thinking they objectively are better than the Ace Ops just because they won one fight is not only wrong imo, but is taking things at face value. As for the speculating... three-for-three on difference of opinion, I guess. That kind of thing is usually referred to as applicability, where people can draw different conclusions because the work allows for speculation, which many appreciate more than the usual 'this is what it means, and anything else is wrong', or that's how some can see the latter. I can appreciate both myself because both have their merits, but I usually like applicability a bit more - in this case, some fans can see shipping (which is their business), and I can see close friends growing closer (which is my business). It makes things much more interesting that way, I think
@yiledute
@yiledute 4 года назад
@@Omegafire17 again...I'm not talking about who is or is not right, I'm talking about how the show is making them look. Please listen to those words. Because the point of having no real "correct" answer is to show the bad and good of each, not to tell the audience "look, A is wrong and B is right", because as you said that is saying the world is black and white, when it is not. And the show is saying that team RWBY is "more right" than Ironwood by having Ironwood and Winter admit their plan is not perfect and plot wise staging everything to make their plans fail, and by having the members of team RWBY not thinking "maybe there is another way" or "maybe we realy can't just stand and fight and expect everything to be ok somehow" and making them say cool heroic words and phrases. Sure, some people prefer to make each story as their own, so they are free to imagine whatever they want. But at least to me, the point of watching/listening/reading a story is to have a different perspective, in other words to see the world from the eyes of the author and have an open mind to different opinions and realities, instead of me interpreting everything to my own gain and preferences; that is why writers like Tolkien or Lovecraft are so well liked, because their vision was amazing, not because the fans twisted their world and characters as they wanted. I enjoy liking a character because of how that character was created, not because I molded that character to fit me, even if what I want them to be doesn't align to how they were made in the first place and their actions. So if I see two persons having a good time with each other and literally using the word friend, then they are that: friends. If I only wanted them to be a couple then it's fine, but assuming they are just because I wanted is another thing.
@teamcybr8375

@@yiledute No, it just means team RWBY is better at fighting them than they are at fighting team RWBY. Because team RWBY works together really effectively, and they don't.
