Out of the 4 continents in the Game of Thrones world, Sothoryos and Ulthos are definitely the least known about and arguably the most dangerous and deadly. Today, I talk about them Thanks for watching! :) (Sorry, it's been awhile)
GRRM/AWOIAF left us with plenty of intrigue, but I suspect GRRM himself never intended Sothoryos or Ulthos to figure in this story so just chucked in 5 minutes of Lovecraft, a hint of King Kong and so on, and left it at that.
It’s like Todd Howard says about TES lore, sometimes if you purposely keep things vague people can’t help wondering 🤷🏽♂️. Makes for a far more interesting world
I just find it so intriguing. I'd love to know more information, but it's just not that important to the overall story, so im assuming GRRM didn't put much into it.
I'd also be cautious of presenting the scant reports as 'facts'. I think GRRM was influenced by early Medieval descriptions of "people" and animals in Asia, full of fantastical beings. I suspect GRRM's intention is that there is some basis to the legends, but the bulk is nonsense - descriptions by people who wrote thousands of years later and had no direct experience.
Where did you hear that? Everything we know on Ulthos is that it's a massive and dense jungle. And we know Sothoryos is as large as Essos if not larger, and it's mostly jungle until far south when it becomes a desert. So, it wouldn't be cold enough to be the Lands of Always Winter until much further down.

ACOK 40: DAENERYS III A lot of the lore about Sothoryos wasn't written by Martin; Elio and Linda who are day one fans wrote most of the lore for a world of ice and fire, so it wouldn't surprise me if some plot mistake got in. I know they weren't allowed to touch asshai because it's too important for the main story. I would say the fact Ulthos was also left vague, could mean it has importance to the story to come. perhaps the truth in Asshai is related to the 3 eyed crow or something.
There a video essay called the world of game of thrones that go more in depth of the rest of the unknown world of planatos and has alot of fun lore if you're interested in the lore i highly suggest you watch it.. and the sothoryi people are described more like hog type peoples then ape as they have snout like noses hog like skin with big square teeth and due to them not being able to brred with them unlike the ape like poeples of Ib who can have children with humans but they're sterile born. Great video tho as many dont have essays on the unknown worlds of planatos
@SoSoDEVIL oh yea, for sure. I'd love just to see something of Sothoryos and/or Ulthos, just to see what it's like iver there, but we probably never will
I don't really understand how people haven't pick up on how game of thrones is basically medieval fantasy And a common thing in medieval times was heavy embellishment of foreign lands Cause let's face it people in medieval England wouldn't find a land like China for example if they learnt they are normal humans like us but with small eyes that wake up in the mourning eat work then repeat For all we know sorthoryos could just have people like Aztecs with maybe some big reptiles and ulthos just have normal people. The navii empire in ulthos depicted as flying humanoids could just be humans that wear clothes made from giant birds or whatever
