In this video I finally get around to reviewing the Soto windmaster stove. I compare it to the MSR pocket rocket 2 and Jetboil Sol TI outdoors in a little breeze. The Soto weighs 68grams. Don't forget to subscribe!
The Soto windmaster can be bought at backpackinglight.dk/brands/so...

Totally agrees with my canister stove experiences and why I almost never use the ones I own. Time for a Soto Windmaster! Thanks for this review.

Been using mine since spring. I've cut slots in a Jetboil Pan base to accept the Soto potstand. It's almost twice as fast to boil 500ml as my old jetboil pcs indoors. And as you demonstrate, far far better in wind outdoors.

I just discovered that stove a few days ago on another site and I've been watching several videos about it but by far your test is and I quote real world really love what you did there cuz hits I don't use my stove at home I use it out in nature so it's kind of nice to know what it really does but wow what a huge difference that stove is well worth the 50 60 bucks depending on where you get it hands down just wanted to tell you thank you for your test and yeah happy trails

yes.. there are too many comparison videos where the show stop watches, indoor controlled areas and other crap.. drives me nuts. Who uses a stove at home in their garage? sure for fun is one thing, but I want real world use. The Windmaster is simply an amazing piece of engineering.

The MSR Reactor and Windburner both make the Jetboil look like a waste of time, fuel and money if there's any wind at all. My Jetboil is relegated to windowsill use in hotels for making good coffee. My Reactor and Windburner are used outdoors. I have the SOTO also, and it's a very nice stove as well. It's a nice lightweight and compact option that performs big for its class.

You like the MSR Reactor and MSR Windburner better? Why so? (About to pull the trigger on the SOTO...)
@johnw2758
@johnw2758 Год назад
@@chrisrioux unless you modify a pot stand for the Windburner you will be limited in what pots/pans you can use. Also, simmering, certainly with the Reactor, could be very difficult to do.

I think the Windmaster is a great piece of gear. I think though that in temperatures well below freezing an inverted canister stove would do better service then the upright models. The downside would be higher fuel consumption. Longer trips in bellow freezing temps would prompt me to use a white gas stove. Enjoyed the vid.

A year on and MSR Pocket Rocket Deluxe is available in UK. The design is very alike to the Soto Windmaster, wiith a wider burner, which is both convex and slightly lipped. Plus the gap between the pot bottom and the burner has been reduced. The weight is pretty much the same, now the Windmaster is only available with four prongs. However, the MSR is £12+ more and from the tests I’ve seen in 25mph wind, the Windmaster has comparable boil/cook times, (within 10secs.) while using 25% less fuel. So near enough the same weight, cheaper and uses less fuel... the Soto Windmaster wins the day.

Good video and I agree with regard to heating performance. However, the jetboil uses far less fuel (roughly 50% less) which can be an important factor.

I've been vacillating between the Soto & the MSR Deluxe. Your video helped me decide on the Soto which I'll probably buy in May during REI's Annual Anniversary Sale. I'm surprised a little wind made such a difference in boil time. Have you had any experience with the Soto at altitudes above 8,000' or in sub-freezing temperatures? Yes, I've just subscribed & rang the notification bell.

Good choice. I just found this on a quick Google search: "Soto Windmaster is %29 more efficient than MSR Pocket Rocket Deluxe for fuel consumption"
@azclaimjumper
@azclaimjumper 3 года назад
@@chrisrioux I found that article & have bookmarked it for future reference. I did, in fact, buy the Soto & have used in to heat numerous freeze-dried meals & water for coffee. Now it's my turn to return the favor. I came up with the idea of making a Koozie around my 750ml Toaks cup. It works like a champ. After water is boiling I take it off the stove, pour in my Freeze-Dried meal, wait 10 minutes for it to re-hydrate. I'm a slow eater & I'm able to enjoy the entire meal HOT-HOT right down to the last sporkfull. Incidentally, I use a fold-up spork, no need for a long handled spork. You won't believe how much heat is retained with the Reflectix Koozie. I prefer Peak Refuel meals, however, there is so much food in each pouch I open the pouch at home & weigh out equal portions of the Freeze Dried meal into 2 separate 1 qt FREEZER ziplock baggie; packs up in less space & I'm able to consume the smaller portions of food.

hello. Don't you think the differences in performances come from the temperature and not the wind. The SOTO WindMaster comes with a micro regulator that the other stoves don't have. It is supposed to have better performances in low temperatures as mentioned on the charts displayed on the box. They claim 4'16" boil time vs 8'16" on a normal stove with a temperature of -5 celsius.
@Backpackinglightse
@Backpackinglightse 5 лет назад
Basil Instinct well, one of the reasons I chose the jetboil and pocket rocket is because they both have micro regulators for better cold weather performance. I basically wanted as good a comparison as possible with all things being equal.
@TheCarmacon
@TheCarmacon 2 года назад
The micro regulator does nothing when the valve is already fully opened.

Do you have any idea about gas consumption per boil? i think that should also being counted in if you compare stoves.
@bilbodd2777
@bilbodd2777 5 лет назад
on the other hand, if the other stoves can't get to a boil, that argument is invalid ofcourse :)
@Backpackinglightse
@Backpackinglightse 5 лет назад
I had done this in the recording but got rid of it along with a few other metrics as the video was too long. It was fairly obvious from the video that the Soto was far more efficient in real world conditions as the flame and heat production wasn’t being wasted. Which was why I got rid of it. Same with time to boil, not a very interesting or relevant metic in this particular example. The mar would have wasted half a can of butane before getting near boil - just because of the wind. Otherwise in controlled conditions, no wind, indoor environment, the jetboil is the fastest and most efficient
@dudeymcduderson
@dudeymcduderson Год назад
When I use my windmaster in below freezing conditions it works better if I hold the pot an inch above the burner using the pot gripper. Otherwise when it sits directly on top the flame goes out.

Im using the Soto Windmaster and Jetboil TI pot together, sure i need two small mods, works great, but still looking for even more wind protection that is canister safe, and i run the fuel as low as practical to save fuel, but still boils fast
@Backpackinglightse
@Backpackinglightse 5 лет назад
How does that work out? from what I understand the soto is highly effective because it sits so close to the pan.. the jetboil pots usually have that metal thing on the bottom that pushes the pot surface further away from the burner
@patrickbaker9040
@patrickbaker9040 5 лет назад
@@Backpackinglightse First bought the pot separately, many moons ago, initially to be used with BRS stove, see pic here: rutalocura.com/images/IMG_7720.JPG The TI foil ring, covers the pot "fins", to allow the Jetboil to rest on the stove pot supports
@patrickbaker9040
@patrickbaker9040 5 лет назад
@@Backpackinglightse In order to get the Soto Windmaster to fit inside this setup, I easily and quickly dremeled a tiny bit (1/8"?) from the end of the 3 Soto pot supports, surprisingly this still seems to work structurally and allows the stove to just barely fit inside the Jetboil Sol TI pot and then rest directly on the fins, as shown in the previous pic
@patrickbaker9040
@patrickbaker9040 5 лет назад
@@Backpackinglightse Probably less wind resistant, since the pot fins have openings that allow wind to pass thru, so one day would like to take a next step, in finding some additional wind protection, something like a small 1" wide TI foil would provide, bearing in mind to not to overheat canister or the rings, but I run my stove on low anyways
@patrickbaker9040
@patrickbaker9040 5 лет назад
@@Backpackinglightse May not be the lightest setup, but combines two of my favorite pieces of kit, so that I can use them together 🙂

I’m getting the impression that the WM is also more fuel economic compared to most other stoves. This is a topic that I don’t hear reviewers talk about too often. Someone prove my thesis!

The Amicus and Windmaster are very close in operation. The Amicus is a bit louder and has a easier storage profile. The pot legs are the difference. My old Snowpeak at 2 oz has the better built in pot legs. The Snowpeak which I used for over 2,000 miles had to be used with a titanium windscreen and had issues at low below freezing temperatures. For non micro regulated stoves, take the gas cylinder in at night into your bag.

The windmaster for sure, the amicus has a little lip but the arms are really high like the MSR. The combo of the windmaster’s lip and the low legs are great in the wind. I’d spend the extra bit and get the windmaster everytime compared to the amicus
