@@baifomet6425 well there was that old early zelda demo around the time of gamecube windwaker... the one with OOT gandondorf and link. it was epic. sadly then nintendo drastically changed it to WW we got. love WW tho and its ds sequels tho. but yes deff prefer the SC version with link. kinda shocked nintendo let them use link tho. they are usually very protective of their IP's. but namco truly did justice to his character and representation. it fit well into that world. respect to namco. gamecube port of sc2 was f*cking amazing!! :D
I remember that as soon as I learned about Link being in Soul Calibur 2, I bought a Gamecube (with the GC Game Boy attachment) and preordered this game; I also either preordered or outright bought Windwaker, but can't remember if it was out yet or not. I was always a Zelda fan since the first NES game, but I was also a huge Soul Blade/Soul Calibur fan, so it was win-win for me. Honestly, looking back, Game Cube has a great library of games, some not available anywhere else (Eternal Darkness is one of my faves).
I came home from Afghanistan in a frenzy to get soul Calibur two we had the arcade cabinet in my army barracks and it took $20 bills I played all night
🤣 I wonder how much you payed over time. Hell, I wonder how much I payed all these years ago too. All night... Damn I know you was playing like a pro. It's a blessing you made it back 👍🏾
Soul Calibur 2 was our introduction to the franchise, and you know, we're glad to have the Gamecube version because of Link, in my opinion, this game's the best of this franchise.
He fit like a glove. Spawn to a lesser degree, but what the hell were they thinking with Heihachi on the PS2? He doesn't use any kind of weapon. He practices Karate, which literally means "Empty hand", as in sans-weapon!
@@SomeOrangeCatCloud Strife from FFVII was originally supposed to be the guest character in the PS2 version, but for reasons unknown, the negotiations with Square fell through at the last minute. I guess they went with Heihachi because A) Namco already owned him, and B) Tekken was PlayStation exclusive at the time.
The arcade Soul Calibur 2 had Conquest Mode which was not ported to the home version. It's like the board game Risk with four colors advancing on a map for territory. You register an avatar with a password, join a color, and you fight against other AI avatars registered on the machine, and as you play better the AI of your fighter improves. As you defeat other players your color gains territory. After about eight battles you get the opportunity to fight against your own avatar that you've created. Every time you logged in, you would get to see the progress of what lands were conquered. It was a brilliantly innovative mode that took advantage of the fact that the same arcade machine would be played by hundreds of players. Sadly it doesn't seem many people are even aware that it existed.
I absolutely love soul calibur 2!!! I grew up with the PS2 version story mode unlocking new weapons and costumes so much replay value... I also own the Xbox version and the GameCube version one of my favorite sixth generation fighters next to Tekken tag tournament :)
never forget the experience to play LInk in this game. soul calibur 2 on gamecube...was amazing. thank you nintendo for allowing link to be in there. been a fan since soul edge on psx. then soul calibur on dreamcast. also everytime dreamcast is mentioned anywhere i feel a bit of deep sadness tho. such a sad ending to a wonderful console... also sucks cloud wasnt in the ps2 version. i never knew that info. that would been epic too. lolz. poor sony fanboys. square did yall dirty. :(
yeahh, it would've been awesome to have Cloud fight with the rest of the Soulcalibur 2 roster. But at least Square made up for it by having 2B enter Soulcalibur 6
It’s a bloody shame about the PS2 version, the PS2 was so close to getting Cloud as a guest. But it fell through, shame really. Instead the PS2 gets boring ass Heihachi. If I want Heihachi, I’ll play the Tekken games.
The game was so popular,it got modern ports on psn & xbox live called SC2 online edition. Both versions had Heihachi & Spawn (though no Link, for obvious reasons)
Fun video, I'd love a Soul Calibur 3 so I can relive my create a character memories (and curse the bug that screwed over the RPG style mode in the game!)
They needed to re-release the HD Online version of Soul Calibur 2 on Nintendo Switch and this time have all 3 previously console-exclusive characters on this particular version. It would be the definitive version of this game (Also they need to re-add the Japanese voice acting as an option)
I still have this game Link was definitely my main too I would always time his throw to get a ring out victory when I played with my friends back in the day lol
Since Tophat is doing more Soulcalibur Videos this gives me hope for more Dead Or Alive Content and maybe content based on Darkstalkers, BlazBlue and Gulity since the SnK content has dried up
Love how the ps2 versions has heihachi with no type of weapons just the hands 🤣 while everyone else has normal weapons or magical weapons you gotta respect that
There seems to be missing coverage on the HD version of SC2 which is currently delisted as of 2022. Hopefully there is going to be the definitive edition of these games released on the PS4, PS5, Xbox Series X/S and especially the Switch.
I work as a developer in a startup making apps for IOS. In the office, there's this old MVS cabinet converted to run an arcade emulator on an XBOX. We played maybe twice a month some double dragon, street fighter 2 or some old obscure game until the day we stumbled upon SC2. Now it is mandatory to have a tournament every single day after lunch and new recruits get a shifu.
Soul calibur 2 was my favorite game on the GameCube as well the first game I ever played. This is also what introduced me to the favorite Nintendo franchise legend of Zelda series
I still got my Soul Calibur 2 GameCube disc. It's my favorite one in the series. Unfortunately I can't play it since my GameCube system messed up. Now I'm looking into getting the Wii system to play my GameCube games.
I have a hard time picking between Dreamcast, PlayStation 2, and GameCube? I'll say PS2 because it's also a PS1 and DVD player but I'll sometimes say DC or GCN because I prefer the more colorful graphics from them.
I love the 1st one better....btw i was just as much as a nerd as you, bro...i bought a PS2, GC and XBOX when they were new...ah and i already owned a DC..i sold it in 2003 to buy a GBA SP but i bought it again many years later eheh
GOOD. GOOD. Now give us more. From what I remember reading in I think Wizard, or some other magazine at the time that wasn't about video games, of Tod talking about "partnering up" with an over seas company from Japan. He was really excited about it. This had to be in 2001 or maybe even 2002. He wasn't talking about video games, nor comics but it was about his toy company and its current ventures. What I think happen is that he was in the talks with Temco to make a line of Soul Calibur or Tekken toys, and this somehow lead to him designing Necrid. From there a tiny partnership was formed and that's how Spawn was added as a guest character. I think he did make toys for the series or one of Temcos licenses. And by "toys" I believe he ended up making like 3 or 9 highly detailed statues, that were either given away as tournament prizes or sold for crazy bank. I also remember either a promo for the game or a short about Tod's business, where he quickly alludes to it-- and I mean quickly; he talks about it [statues] in a passing sentence. I can't wait to see what you think about 3 'cause 3 changed it up. It is almost a completely different game. And 5 never happened. Just go 4 to 6.
I played SC2 first on my little cousin's Xbox during that era. We'd played that game for hours. I think I got my Gamecube copy very late during the Wii - WiiU days. Although not a Zelda fan I do like Link a lot and wished his combat was just as smooth or fluid in his own games since after which Zelda combat system seemed way more stale after that and even TP Zelda which does have a lot of moves that I do love that Link uses it still feels stiff compared to SC2. I also do miss Spawm at times, never used him but it was always fun to fight that Axe freak
Please do videos on mortal kombat 3 (& UMK3),tekken 2, DOA2, & soul calibur 3. As well as videos on blazblue, snk's world heroes, primal rage, mace the dark age, sonic the fighters, pokken tournament,& power rangers battle for the grid
Soul calibur 2 is an all time classic game personally one of my favorite fighting games of all time I still got this game but I own the XBOX version which had SPAWN as the console exclusive character
This is still one of the games i spent more hours playing than any others, the only ones i've played more are Diablo 2 Lord of Destruction, Star Craft and the 2 Capcom vs SNK's. Oh and Street Fighter Alpha 3, i've spent so much time playing those 6 games that i can't really say which one i played most. 😅👍
@@dbycrash Haa! As much as i loved that game i never got to own it and neither did the friend i always played games with. It IS however one of the games that got my quarters whenever i saw an arcade cabinet with it running. 😄👍
its baffling that Bandai Namco hasn't released another Soul Calibur game with Link giving how popular SC2 (gamecube) was because of him. Sighhh also imagine if they placed other characters in future installments like: Pit, Marth,Lyndis and Ganondorf
they already made a Tekken style fighter with Pokemon....maybe they should do a Nintendo based Soul Calibur style fighter next. Could be all Fire Emblem, but having characters from the likes of Zelda, Kid Icarus, Murasame Castle, Xenoblade, Last Story, Pandora's Tower, Golden Sun, Astral Chain and Dragalia Lost would be even better ( also...that would make an awesome Nintendo crossover musou )
@@newageBoundhippie I've been dreaming of such an idea for ages. A 3D weapons based fighter from Nintendo. Unfortunately it seems they stopped at Smash and Pokken.
I got all 3 versions of this game on Gamecube (I play via Backwards Compatible Wii), Xbox (Via Backwards compatible Xbox 360 Arcade), and PS2. I originally played the Gamecube version of the game on my old Gamecube back when I was turning 11. I specifically gotten it for Link since I use to be a very biased boy during the time so I wasn't really too open to playing as many gams as I do today (for the most part). As nostalgia I have for the Gamecube version of Soul Calibur 2, I would consider the PS2 version my favorite out of the 3 since Heihachi fits like a glove due to the Tekken and Soul Calibur characters almost looking as if they are both the same fighting game in a way, especially since it somewhat feels like I'm playing Tekken when I play as Heihachi. By the way Top Hat, you forgotten one thing about the development of this game. Supposedly, Kasumi from the Dead or Alive series by Tecmo was at one point considered making it in the Xbox version of Soul Calibur 2. As this was during the time the Dead or Alive series started to be exclusive to the Xbox series of consoles until 2010 when Tecmo release Dead or Alive Paradise on PSP. The idea was scrapped due to Namco and Itagaki's feud before Itagaki left Tecmo and Team Ninja. I remember reading that from TV Tropes.
Nothing beats that Dreamcast Soul Calibur. To this day. It was solidly superior to Namco’s Tekken Tag on the PlayStation 2 years later. The character designs got increasingly wackier in the sequels and drifted away from the around the world archetypes that gave it identity. Dreamcast Soul Calibur holds up amazingly well.
SC1 on dreamcast is definitely superior. Even the gameplay easily surpasses SC2's gameplay. I remember when a Japanese dev who worked on SC2, actually admitted that the gameplay in SC2, was deliberately trashed down and watered down, and it was a business decision by the higher ups, to do so.
This is a really nice fighting game history vid. And this is the first time, I'm commenting on a Top Hat Gaming Man vid.👍 I will admit, after playing both SC1 and SC2, the SoulCalibur on dreamcast, is definitely alot better, and more impressive gameplay wise, than SC2. And the dreamcast SoulCalibur interestingly, is the only SC game, and 3d namco fighting game, to get a perfect score of 10 out of 10.👍😄
I remember getting the ps2 version from dixons not long after starting 6th form at school. I had to prove i was over 15 at the time and did so with my bank statement showing me getting the long defunct education maintenence allowance (it went national in 2004) as you have to be at least 16 which i was to get it. I still have that disc to this day. Years later, i also bought the gamecube version too. I did enjoy beating the computer up with heihaci's bare fists.
I'm glad I wasn't reading video game magazines back when this game came out. Soul Caliber II + Heihachi Mishima = 1st day purchase. I eventually got the Xbox version because finding Spawn in a good, video game was a challenge back then. Spawn games were cringe, while Spawn being in other games was something to look forward to. Those of us that are good at MK11 know what I'm saying.
SC is one of my favorite fighting series.. I like it because it feels like a spiritual successor to Yie Ar Kung Fu which strangely never got a reboot..
I remember being so pissed because we had Heihachi on the PS2 while Xbox had Spawn and GC had Link. Years later, when I bought a Wii, I went and bought SC2 (my only GC game) and a Game MMC on purpose (went to 2nd hand seller with 38,5ºC fever just for the card. Took me around 4 hours on public transportation to go and return) just to play with Link. And it was money (and health🤦♂️😏😂) well spent!!! BTW, Spawn back then was extremely big in the US. After Todd McFarlane left Marvel and founded his own company, Spawn has been his helmsman for a long time. It even gave birth to a cartoon series and a movie adaptation released one year before SC2. So for the American market, a cartoon character that was the hype + a company (Image Comics) who wouldn't give problems = ease of movement for Namco.
Many of the people who got SC2 at the time was because of Link was on the game on the gamecube port. A wise move considering the sales and that many of the sc fans now started with that game, not me since my first game was SC3, i would like you to do a video about that entry wich was also amazing.
I played Soul Edge a few times and I ABSOLUTELY love Soul Calibur 2! Soul Calibur 3 was just incredibly MIND BLOWING!😍 However Soul Calibur 4 sucked and I never played Soul Calibur 5. After you cover 3 please explain why number 4 is so AWFUL😖 and tell us about 5 as well. Great video.👍
The first Namco fighting game to actually feature special guest characters was 鉄拳Tekken 3. When they added Bandai's Gon to the roster. I wonder why TK4, 5, and 6 didn't do the same?
