Preach it!!! Eating that type of shit every week ain’t gonna help. I’m black and I’m not gonna fit into the stereotype that we have to eat that type of food.
Lol facts but also because it tastes so good it makes your soul cry in joy. Food is delicious and can make your brain's dopamine levels skyrocket. Which is why its addictive. Soul food is the best tasting food in history because the people who created it went through so much pain and trauma.
The family in Soul Food were eating it once a week, and it was implied that Big Mama ate the food everyday. I still remember the scene when Big Mama is in the doctor's office being told that she had to have her leg cut off, and her daughters say "You haven't been watching what you were eating." and I just said to myself - "You're eating the same food every week!" The little boy telling his grandma in the hospital how he misses her food, and McDonald's made him throw up. I'm surprised that Huey didn't mention that they only did the Sunday dinner again after she died, because the little boy said he found Big Mama's money.
I'm mexican we have our big mama, instead of food she died of alcohol, and the same week after she died everybody gathered and had a drink in her name. No body went to rehab they didn't learned the lesson.
@@nightmare674 The constant consumption of alcoholic beverages can lead to multiple illness and disorders thought one can die of too much alcohol most deaths are related to long term effects on the body.
RINKU wait wait hold hold up there is a movie called soul food and they have a character that is called big momma but there is a movie franchise called big momma's house
Moon manVIVIVI In the African American community, The Grandmother/Matriarch of the family is sometimes referred to as "Big Momma". That's where that comes from.
aint tha lard, its the seed oil shortening and the carbs, and the fact that ppl dont work outside for 12 hours a day. and boondocks is black racist trash.

"...& thats tha end of tha movie!" i love tha cold, detached, disinterested, almost condescending way huey speaks while describing tha movies plot lmaoo, as tho hes in school presenting a book report bout some shitty novel he was forced to read lol

I've never really read the comics, but now that you mention it, you're right. This show does a pretty good job of pointing out exactly what's wrong with various crappy movies and TV shows. For me at least, it's kind of like The Nostalgia Critic in that regard... I can't stand the hamfisted attempts at political satire, but it still hits the nail on the head when it comes to tearing shitty entertainment apart. If MacGruder spent more time doing that and less time race-baiting and spewing conspiracy theories, maybe he'd still have a show.
Idk, MacGruder just struck me as either lazy, or really had no passion to do the show. I got a book that had all of his radio interviews and you couldn't find a more tired and unenthused person. And deciding to choose style over substance (anime which takes about 2 years to do) on something that semi-focused on current events was a terrible decision.
Leave it to Huey to take a two hour film about family drama and simplify it into movie about unhealthy eating habits in 30 seconds. “And that’s the end of the movie” lol
Soul Food should've been a PG film...it would've been timeless. We would be watching Soul Food every Thanksgiving. Its not even a family movie....SMH!!!
0:54 Grandad: “God called her home...” You’re home now Grandad make the best soul food you can make including the world famous Luther Burger! RIP John Witherspoon
While the movie's ending of "Soul Food" tried to convey some sort of meaningful message about "keeping traditions alive", clearly this was one of the worst ways the more you think about it...
Indian food is fattening. Most Italian dishes are fattening Even French cuisine is fattening. Julia Child noted that McDonald's fries when they were cooked in lard were delicious. Big lesson is to not eat fatty foods in excess. As they say, everything in moderation. Probably even sex. I tend to overindulge in that pleasure.
0:39 I like how Grandad is so obsessed with the movie, he had to correct Huey over the tiniest detail, and Huey was like “whatever, i don’t give a shit, she dies.”
The funny thing about this scene is that usually when a show makes an obscure reference they just role with it and pretend everyone got it (I am looking at you Seth MacFarlane). But here they not only explain it but point out the movie's biggest logical law.
Most people seems to hate how Family Guy usually mentions where the references comes from so people that have never seen those things will understand it.
@@CyberLance26 I think the reason why it works here isn’t so much because Boondocks is older but because, at least in this instance, the reference makes sense with the plot. Huey in this episode is critical of soul food and how unhealthy it is. So him talking about the movie and the problem with it, which ties into his argument, works. Family Guy, on the other hand, generally goes “remember this thing?” and does a sketch about it. And sometimes they’re alright, even funny. But then comes the thought of what it’s doing there and not in a Robot Chicken-esque collection of sketches.
I think the lesson we can take from Soul Food is moderation. You can enjoy unhealthy food every now and again, but eating too much of it too often is going to have negative consequences for your health.
That's why I always liked huey, while everyone else is acting a fool he's always the one that makes the most sense. He's the only reason I ever watched this show.
You know, when I heard of a muckbang RU-vidr who tragically passed away from diabetes in his sleep, this scene came to mind. There were a lot of videos of people eating the same food he reviewed in honor of him, and I just thought that if his young death wasn't a wake up call, nothing will be.
damn I really thought this was a joke comment someone would make as a way to talk about Nikokado, but this was posted THREE years ago. Well, I guess we're gonna have a reboot of this story soon
And yet Huey’s words are still relevant with the other Muckbang users. After that one died, they didn’t learn no lesson, they didn’t get rid of the idea. I guess idiocy lives on despite of tragedy
@@MisterXenomorph No. I believe his name was Jasper Daze. I didn't watch his videos, but my recommendations got flooded with people eating the food he liked in his honor after his death.
So my buddy was talking to me about his dad once. His dad was making chitterlings and pig's feet and some other such nonsense. And when my friend recoiled at the idea of eating them, his dad was like "this is what the slaves would eat!" And my buddy just looks at him and goes "WELL YOU AND I ARE NOT SLAVES ARE WE?" In short, he made his own dinner later 😂

I loved Huey's take on the movie, but its only mostly true. Some of the family did speak out against having the dinner. For instance, Teri thought that the dinners should stop, after Big Momma went into a coma. They overruled her and made out to be the odd one.
The noises they make whole eating is fucking hilarious but so is the fact that while Huey hates Soul Food, he actually doesn't know that Big Mama lost her leg to diabetes and can't remember if she died of a heart attack or stroke. She had a stroke, fell into a coma but did come through long enough to tell her grandson her final message and THEN she dies from complications from said stroke. Movie was fucking wild for something that was presented as wholesome. Makes me wonder how he felt about the tv series and the planned sequel. XD
That is a horrible point to make if your family hates you , treats you like shit and doesnt want to see you succeed in life. Family is made by the people you find along the way who treat you kindly, it doesnt require to be blood related.
As someone who loves this movie and has watched this movie thousands of times throughout my childhood and even into my adulthood I'll tell you that Huey explained it pretty well.
Huey is not off in this episode, Soul Food (The food, not the Movie) is really unhealthy. Like, its unhealthy for a few reasons. While the term Soul Food really wasn't a used term until the 1960s and 1970s, however the type of food particularly cuisines prepared by Black Americans in the South; dates back to Slavery times. Slave Owners would give the unhealthiest parts of an animals body to the Slaves as food, or many scraps. So with what the Slaves had, they would prepare dishes with them. Slaves would also deep fry food, bread meat etc in order to gain a large amount of calories necessarily for hard days in the field. So ya, its not a surprise the food is unhealthy when the origins were the unhealthy scraps from animals, with the food prepared in a way to give calories for the harsh terrible work of a slave.
Omg this is hilarious! I loved that movie when it came out. The way Huey describes it though is spot on…..a big humungous grandmother who demonstrates her love by feeding herself and offspring enormous amounts of pig lard…….who then dies because of it…..so what do they do next Sunday! Omg I’ve never thought of it like that in the context of the movie. I love Regina King in everything. I’m surprised she wasn’t in the actual film
This is why I enjoyed season 1 Huey much more, he mellows out too much in the later seasons and the later seasons end up just being real-life news stories turned into cartoons rather than having the stories from the comics (the family going back to their hometown and Huey meeting Cairo was a phenomenal episode, Cairo was an amazing foil for Huey).
technically, it was more than that. big mama was the heart of that family and it chronicles the struggles of life without her. in the end, they learn the value of family and have a great spin off on TV
Yeah the lesson was good and all but look at what they had to go through to get there and for them to still not have any healthy sunday dinners is pretty vexing
The main Sunday Dinner my family has is Italian. Precluded with a Salad with Croutons and Dressing, while the Main Course is Pasta, home-made Tomato Sauce(with home-grown Tomatoes), Meatballs, and Sausage. We never have Spaghetti.
Italy is not known for being healthy either. What point are you trying to make here? Folks, try Japan, Africa, some of the Caribbean, or France as a guide on healthy eating.
@@wallacegentry4085 He never claimed Italian was healthier. There's healthy and unhealthy food in every culture dude, including the four you just listed.
I'm black I had my own Bigmama we didn't called her Bigmama, Grandma or Nana we called her Helene She died of the heart attack and diabetes at age 62 RIP Helene 1944-2006 We always had a Sunday dinner every Sunday at her house can't believe my step grandfather sell her house and he got remarried to another woman

LMAO. Just watched Soul Food, and this is accurate 😭 of course you usually won’t develop health issues from eating soul food just once a week if your diet in general is healthy, but I’d still think the family would have shown more self-reflection after Big Mama died. Was not a huge fan of the film in general. Love how the end of this clip shows the family chowing down with Big Mama’s empty chair at the head of the table.
