Ritchie Havens was the opening act to kick off festival..he was supposed to play 45 minutes. The crowd was so massive..the roads in were blocked for 12 miles...the other acts had to be flown in by helicopter...in the delay..the sound guys and promoters kept telling hi to play. Ritchie played for 2 more hours...this song FREEDOM..was totally made up on the spot as he had played every song he knew...Freedom total spontaneous..look at the sweat...as he exits the stage....he collapsed in Exhaustion! peace..love..music.

Richie Havens is known as "The Godfather of Woodstock". He played a double set at Woodstock because of late arrivals of other acts . A very talented and innovative folk singer, his career lasted an amazing 50+ years. Singer, songwriter, actor, and accomplished artist. He was a true rennassnce man.

A great folksinger ! He opened Woodstock and played for three hours straight because no one was ready and they asked him to kill time. He was fantastic. A beautiful soul.

Richie Havens was the only one who claimed he played for three hours. at first he claimed to have played for 2 hour and 45 minutes, he later claimed it was 3 hours and he played every song he knew, which would have meant he only knew 11 songs. The film crew said he started at 5:07 PM. Sunset was at 8:01 PM. The following performances by Sweetwater and then Bert Sommers were both 45 minute sets. Both performances were filmed in daylight. He had to have played less than an hour and a half. I think he may have had a tendency to exaggerate. Nonetheless he certainly gave a powerful and passionate performance!

Yea woodstock wasn't just a bunch of hippies ,it was very socially diversified with music and races. Try sly and the family stone.they may have given the greatest performance. I admit the fans were mostly hippies.

Sometimes I feel like a motherless child was originally performed by the Fisk Jubilee singers in 1871, and performed for the next hundred fifty years by countless subsequent performers counting Mahalia Jackson amongst them, and who delivers a superlative performance. I have a recommendation that you play Mahalia Jackson's Soulful rendition of sometimes I feel like a motherless child on the next female Friday.

In fact, they should check out Summer of Soul which occurred around the same time in Harlem. Mahalia was there and there’s an incredible scene where she asks young Mavis Staples to help her out because she didn’t feel that well. What ensued was fantastic.

@@TheDivayenta The raw emotional wailing in Mahalia Jackson's voice and Mavis Staples I can only imagine is what a heavenly language would sound like. The sound that emanated from those talented women's voices was one born of pain, and protest. It seems to be an anguished plea for justice. Justice for the forced diaspora and cultural ethnocide perpetrated on their community. When you're fighting evil without weapons a voice can be a lance that pierces a heart. Please excuse the histrionic tone but after watching that performance who can blame me

GUYS! Keep digging through Ritchie's catalogue, he has some amazing sings/covers. His version of Cat Stevens "Peace Train" His Beatles cover "Here Comes The Sun" and Dylan cover "Just Like A Woman" are so beautiful.

A couple of years after this I saw Richie as the last , headliner, act of an all-day festival in the old football stadium at Indiana University. It had begun to rain about mid-day and rained intermittently that afternoon. Ritchie took the stage in a steady rain. He began to play the Beatles "Here Comes The Sun." The rain suddenly stopped. A double rainbow appeared over the end of the stadium above the stage where he was playing. Yes, we were convinced Ritchie had a "spiritual connection." 😇

Richard Pierce Havens(1/21/1941-4/22/2013) a singer-songwriter and guitarist playing elements of folk,soul and rhythm and blues. Had beatnik days in Greenwich Village in the 1950's perfrom poetry and drawing portraits for two years. " SOMETHING ELSA AGAIN "(1968) was his first hit on Billboard charts. Havens does an incredible version of Bob Dylan's 'Just Like a Woman' .. deserves a listen. If you're wondering how he plays the guitar like that (one finger fret board style) it's because the guitar has an open tuning. #RIP

My favorite song of Richie's is Dylan's "The Times They Are A Changin". It is an older, slower, more calmer protest song. Dylan's words are more impactful to me coming from an old man who has struggled himself.

I really love that Jordan and Amber are discovering the rich and diverse history of black music. It seems like their generation is so focused on rap and hip hop now and most of them really know very little about everything that came before that. I wonder if we'll ever see them react to artists like Youssou N'dour, Fela Kuti, or Hugh Masekela. That would be trippy.

Richie Havens used to be the opening act for the Mothers of Invention in the Village in the 1960's. I used to sit in the first row with my feet on the stage when he opened. I met his brother Larry a number of times through a mutual friends. Great memories.

Richie Havens is a folk legend -- a true poet with a rich voice. My late brother-in-law, Jim, who was 13 years older than me, was a huge fan, and he turned me on to Havens' music. I'm sure he sees him play in Heaven now. Rest in peace, Jim and Richie.

Jay you haven’t listened to Richie Valens yet. That was actor Lou Diamond Phillips who played Richie Valens in the film La Bamba. This February 3, will be 63rd anniversary of the deaths of Buddy Holly, Richie Valens, and Jules Richardson aka The Big Bopper from a plane crash near Clear Lake,Iowa. It was the inspiration behind the 1972 iconic song American Pie

It is out of the way, not really convenient to any other "touristy" places to visit, but... if you've absorbed the documentary and basically know a lot about the concert, it is definitely worth visiting the Woodstock concert site in Bethel, NY. As of now, there is no fast-food joint across the street, no cheap motel in view, no tourist traps. I hope it always remains this way. It is possible to visit today and see exactly where the stage was. It is a natural "bowl" land formation, down a gently inclining hill. You can easily imagine where you might have sat yourself. Because it IS out of the way, it is not crawling with lost/confused tourists. Its remoteness can't really be translated to the screen. They had to close the NY Thruway? Route 17? 178? Of course they did. (For the uninitiated, Woodstock took place in Bethel, NY, not Woodstock. Watch the documentary for more info.) If you are ever in this area of the country and you feel that Woodstock vibe, do yourself a favor and visit before it all becomes commercialized.

I had the privilege of hearing Richie Havens in concert half a dozen times in the late 1990's & early 2000's in both Canada & the U.S. After his concerts he would often stay around & talk with fans for an hour or so. Sweet man. R.I.P.

Richie’s first hit was “High flying Bird”. It’s spectacular. I love “Morning”, a beautiful ballad. In 1967 I booked Richie Havens for a concert at my school, Pratt Institute. It was his first outside of club performances. He was so natural and friendly. For years we would occasionally run into each other in the city and he always remembered me. Fortunately I was at Woodstock and several concerts over the years. I was probably at his last concert tour at Symphony Hall in Boston several years ago. He was as powerful as the first time I heard him 40 some years earlier. I’m enriched having known him and his talent.

Interesting fact, Richie Havens was creamated, and his ashes scattered at the site of Woodstock. Also, Michael Lang, co-founder of Woodstock, passed away a few days ago. RIP.

The saddest part in my eyes of Woodstock was the time slot JIMI HENDRICKS got at 9 am on last day when their were only 40,000 people left out of 300,000 and Jimi does the Stars Spangle Banner. At this time (such short 4 years ) Jimi Hendrix was the highest paid musician. His statue still sits (kneeling ) on Broadway in Seattle playing a guitar. His popularity came from London where he did his 3 # 1 hits with Hey Joe being the 1st.

Richie Havens became a household name after opening the 1969 Woodstock festival, which included an improvised encore called "Freedom," based on the traditional spiritual "Motherless Child." With his roots in the Greenwich Village folk scene and a handful of eclectic albums in his repertoire, Havens was an ideal choice to play the Woodstock festival, but he was never meant to have top billing. A traffic jam held up several of the performers and Havens, who was slated as the fifth act, was urged on stage (along with his band: Eric Oxendine on bass, Paul Williams on lead guitar, and Daniel Ben Zebulon on congas).

Richie Havens is legendary. He was hanging out backstage and there was no one to go on at Woodstock. The concert managers said, "Richie, you're going on." "What????" Richie went out and put on a legendary performance.

Sometimes I feel like I’m almost gone... Much later, he lended amazing vocal performances to a Folger’s coffee commercial. “The best part of wakin’ up”, and a Cotton commercial “The touch, the feel, the fabric of our lives...” I sincerely hope he made million$ for that! :)

My brother's comment: "I've heard the term "open E-string" guitar used to describe his style of play. What an opportunity for an entertainer to be in that situation in front of the largest crowd in US history to have the stage to himself and be able to perform his craft for something like three hours before the next scheduled performer was ready. All respect to Mr. Havens for keeping the crowd engaged and getting important anti-war and social justice messages across in his music. Saw him live in concert in Oxford, England in '73. Still have four of his LPs. "

Way to go Amber - so glad you choose this one! You're right, Ritchie made up this song after playing for over 3 hours. He didn't have any other songs to play but they needed him to continue because no other performer was ready to go on. So this came out - Freedom!

I saw Richie perform in the Blues Bag Cafe in Provincetown, Mass. in 1968. I met him 40 years later at a concert and he remembered that Cafe when I told him I saw him there. This guy was so incredibly humble.

I saw him perform in my town in Alaska in the late 2000's. I already loved him so much, I felt blessed to attend. He strummed so hard that he had to retune his guitar between each song. But he always told a great story about the old days when he and Jimi Hendrix, Bob Dylan and others were just starting out and sharing songs with each other. RIP Richie Havens. Thank you for your music.

richie opened woodstock,stayed onstage for 3 hrs because nobody could get thru the traffic jam-they then started helicoptering the acts in--he went thru every song he knew, this was his last song of the seethe made uo lyrics right there on stage,btw when he died ,in 2013 he had his ashes dropped over the site from a helicopter--the best saw him many times in my life

I got to see Richie about 30 years after Woodstock, at a smallish outdoor folk festival in Eugene in the 90's. It was rainy and muddy before he came on. He started with the Beatles' Here Comes the Sun and then got everyone to chant the chorus of Good Day Sunshine with him for a few minutes until the sun broke through the clouds. It was sunny for the rest of his set. Dude had seriously good vibes, and he played with as much energy as he had decades before.

The drums were actually congas. Bongos are their small cousins that you can sit cross legged with them between your knees to play ( old movies would have you believe all beatniks played bongos :)). Ricky on "I Love Lucy" played congas. Richie played for 3 hours to open the festival to give other performs time to get there and get ready. You can tell because at the end as he is going off stage you can see his shirt is soaking wet with sweat. More Woodstock please! Then move on to the Monterey Pop Festival from 1967 where both Janis and Hendrix first came to National attention

Met Richie after one of his shows in Hamilton, Ontario a couple of years before he passed away. Such a gentleman and just anice person. He signed a CD for me which I'll always treasure.

He is his songs!!! So much history in what he brings to the table. Notice he was playing his guitar without the strap on his guitar and didn't drop a note or his guitar. Great memories!!!

Oh my, oh my, oh my. This was one of those moments when Woodstock was first shown on a big cinema screen - the Odeon in Leicester Square, London - lo, so many many years ago, when the packed audience was completely silent, utterly transfixed (gobsmacked, as we would say) by his performance. I saw Richie Havens, play a 4 song concert at a t downtown Borders Books, in Chicago, around 2000. I went to shop for media, and I heard music -even before I saw a sign the RH was playing in the store atrium, I knew the voice, and guitar,...Wow! Connection to music,...I could not tell you now, if I purchased any media that day, but I was honored to see such a musician do this short promo' concert.

Love your Woodstock Reactions. When or if you get to Melanie Safka, please do her singing “Birthday of the Sun”. It’s not included in the movie or the original album but it was filmed and the film is on RU-vid. Just so much power coming out of such a young girl. Really something else.

Amazing performance and an amazing performer and human being. Had the privilege and honour to see him love here in the UK. In the 1980’s and early 2000’s . His performances were just like what you saw at Woodstock. He created like an emotional electicity with his voice and guitar. It’s his honesty and humanity that really hit you. I felt it when I heard he had passed away.

Love, love love this man's voice. Didn't get to see him at Woodstock - I was 13 and for some strange reason my parents wouldn't let me go. But I have seen him at some small venues in Massachusetts and he always touched my heart. RIP Mr. Havens.

Richie Havens was an American singer, guitarist, and songwriter that wrote and sang songs that had elements of Folk, Soul, and R & B. He was 28 years old when he performed at Woodstock. According to Wikipedia, Havens was part American Indian (Blackfoot tribe, on his father's side of the family) and part British West Indies (on his mother's side of the family). Note: Richie Havens also performed at the Isle Of Wight Music Festival (the "British Woodstock"). The song, "Freedom" was made up on the fly as Havens sang it. In 1972, recorded a studio version of "Freedom", which was released as a single. Richie Havens' biggest hit recording, was a 1971 cover of The Beatles hit song, "Here Comes The Sun", which was a "Top 20" hit for him. Richie Havens toured around the world numerous times, and continued to record albums. I remember that, in his later years, Richie Havens would perform at least one concert per year at The Kent Stage, which is a small concert hall near Kent State University, in Kent, Ohio. Richie Havens retired from the music industry in 2012 due to kidney problems. He died of a heart attack in 2013, at the age of 72.

I was 14 years old in my little New Hampshire hometown and went into a drugstore with my mom and who walks in but Richie Havens. My mother said “That’s Richie Havens!” I had no clue who he was but he stood out like a sore thumb - very tall and wearing a flowy African shirt. So people were staring at him anyway. He was on his way to a show in Vermont. My mom actually lived in the same building as him in Greenwich Village in the ‘60s (she also saw him at Woodstock). Now I’m such a huge fan. I never forgot that day.
